Karim Benzema casts doubt over Al-Ittihad future as he reveals preference for next season amid offers from Europe and addresses retirement

Karim Benzema has admitted he is unsure whether he will stay at Al-Ittihad beyond this season, confirming European offers are on the table while insisting he has no intention of retiring any time soon. As he approaches 38, the 2022 Ballon dOr winner wants clarity over the club's sporting plans before deciding where he will play next, as he remains determined to continue for at least two more years.

  • Benzema's future uncertain amid Al-Ittihad's struggles

Benzema is entering the final stretch of his current Al-Ittihad contract, and the uncertainty around the club's future plans has left the veteran striker weighing up his next move. Recent speculation has ranged from a contract extension to a possible exit and even retirement, but none of those scenarios has yet been agreed or ruled out officially. His situation has drawn major interest from European clubs keen to bring him back closer to the elite level he dominated for over a decade with Real Madrid.

The Frenchman remains valued highly by Al-Ittihad, who see him as both a sporting leader and a marketing icon, but their early season struggles in the Saudi Pro League have frustrated his competitive ambitions. While he remains settled off the pitch, Benzema has made it clear he does not want to see out his final years without challenging for major silverware. With his deal only running until 2026, any decision will depend on whether the club can fairly urgently present a project that convinces him to stay.

For now, he remains focused on contributing to this season and staying in peak condition as he nears his 38th birthday in December. His message is that he is far from finished physically or mentally, but he wants his final chapters to match his ambitions.

Former Ballon d'Or winner opens up on future

Benzema opened up about the crossroads he faces in a recent interview with AS, confirming he will not be rushed into a decision. "It's true that my contract here is coming to an end. I can't say yet what I'm going to do, whether I'll stay or leave – it depends on a lot of things. In December, I'll be 38. I still see myself playing football for another two years."

He emphasised that he wants a long-term vision, not a short extension just for the sake of it. "We'll see what happens, what the club thinks. I like to talk face-to-face and then see what they think. The best thing for me would be to continue here, but not just for one or two more years. I don't want to do that."

Benzema also confirmed offers from Europe remain active, though comfort and respect matter as much as the level of competition. "It's true that I have offers from Europe. I need to consider everything, choose wisely, and see where I feel good, not forgetting that I feel comfortable here and receive everyone's affection. In any case, I'm not going to stop playing football or competing in six months."

  • Benzema has offers from Europe with contract ending in 2026

Benzema has repeatedly stated that he still feels in strong physical condition despite his age and the demands of the Saudi Pro League. He continues to work rigorously in training, confident that his technical ability and football intelligence allow him to remain decisive in key moments. His affection for Al-Ittihad's fans and the respect he receives in Saudi Arabia remain key parts of why staying is still an attractive option.

Yet the pull of Europe, and especially the Champions League, has never left him. He has openly admitted he continues to watch Real Madrid matches and the top European competitions, describing them as "magical" and a constant reminder of the highest stage. Fenerbahce had reportedly placed the former France international on their wishlist for January; however, are going to be unlikely to actually make a move.

Can Benzema actually return to Europe?

Talks with Al-Ittihad leadership are expected to take place soon, as both sides seek clarity before the second half of the season. If the club can present a convincing project, Benzema could renew his commitment in Saudi Arabia and aim for one last push for titles. Failure to do so, however, would open the door for a dramatic late-career return to European football.

European interest will likely intensify as the summer window approaches, especially with top-level clubs monitoring both his availability and his fitness. Retirement is not being considered in the short term, and Benzema himself has set a clear timeline by projecting his goodbye closer to 2028.

Bukayo Saka set to sign new contract with Arsenal until 2030 as talks with Gunners in 'final stages'

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka is reportedly set to sign a new contract extension with the Gunners that will run until 2030. Talks with the Premier League leaders are now said to be in their "final stages" and Mikel Arteta's side are hopeful the England international will put pen to paper on his new contract at the club before the end of the calendar year.

  • Arsenal lock down Saka

Saka's current contract runs until 2027 but an agreement has been struck for the forward to sign an extension until 2030, according to RMC Sport. Negotiations are ongoing but both sides are now confident of reaching an agreement soon. Arsenal would like the new deal to be signed off before the end of the year as they look to secure the future of one of their brightest stars. Saka joined Arsenal at the age of seven and has come all the way through the academy and into the first team in north London.

Saka hungry for trophies at Arsenal

Saka spoke about his future earlier this year, making it clear he wants to win trophies. He told reporters: “I want to win and I want to win wearing this badge. It is pretty clear, the fans know how much I love them. You saw when I came on on Tuesday, they love me back. So it is a good relationship. I am really happy to be hear and I am focused on winning. I don’t think anyone is really in a rush. I have got two years left on my contract so it’s pretty relaxed. Everyone knows my thoughts and I’ve let you guys know as well, so I don’t think there is much else really.”

The forward won the FA Cup with Arsenal in 2020 but was an unused substitute in the final. He'll be hoping he can add more silverware in the current campaign, with the Gunners currently top of the standings in the Premier League and the Champions League.

  • Saka to follow in Saliba's footsteps

Saka is set to follow in William Saliba's footsteps by penning new terms at Arsenal. The Frenchman extended his existing deal at the end of September, leaving manager Mikel Arteta thrilled.

He told the club's media: "William is loved by all the players and staff, and that speaks volumes about his character, commitment and attitude every day. Since joining us, William has grown so much, embraced responsibility, and has created a strong connection with our supporters and everyone at the club. We know there is still so much to come from him and will continue to work together to keep improving with the clear ambition of winning major trophies."

Andrea Berta, the club's sporting director, added: “We’re so happy that William has committed his future to us to be part of what we’re building here. In the last three seasons, William has become an incredible defender whose composure, intelligence and physical presence make him one of the best in the world. He will continue his development with Arsenal to reach new heights. His consistency, maturity, and ability to influence matches will continue to be a big asset for us and we’re looking forward to many more great performances from him at the heart of our defence.”

Arsenal are also reportedly hoping to secure the long-term futures of Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber once Saka's new contract has been completed.

    Arsenal heading for crunch fixtures

Saka is back with Arsenal after international duty with England and is gearing up for some huge fixtures with the Gunners. Arteta's side face a north London derby against neighbours Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday and then face Bayern in the Champions League. Arsenal and Bayern two of only three teams left in the competition with a 100% record, meaning something will have to give at the Emirates in a week's time. The Gunners then head to Chelsea for another huge Premier League fixture.

Wayne Rooney names Paul Pogba among Man Utd's three strangest signings before INEOS' arrival as club legend hits out at 'big name' policy

Wayne Rooney believes Paul Pogba is among Manchester United's three strangest signings before INEOS bought a stake in the club. The former forward delivered a scathing assessment of the club's transfer strategy before Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co were onboarded, with their recruitment branded as 'horrendous'.

  • Woodward’s chaotic years under the microscope

Before INEOS’ partial takeover in late 2023, football operations at United were largely overseen by Ed Woodward, who held the executive vice-chairman role from 2012 until his resignation in 2021. His tenure coincided with United’s steady decline from domestic dominance to a club struggling to recapture its identity. Rooney’s comments reflect the frustration felt by fans who watched millions poured into signings that never fully delivered. Pogba’s then-world-record £89 million ($117m) return from Juventus, Romelu Lukaku’s £75m ($99m) switch from Everton, and even the short-term arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain have now been framed as decisions which show a lack of footballing vision.

    Signs of change under INEOS

Things have started to shift under Ratcliffe and his INEOS group, who assumed control of football operations after buying a 25 per cent stake in the club. Unlike the scattergun approach of previous years, United’s recent transfer strategy has focused on players with Premier League experience or emerging talents from abroad. This summer’s arrivals, like Bryan Mbuemo, Matheus Cunha, and Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, have injected both energy and stability into the side. Each has already cemented a place in Ruben Amorim’s first-team plans, helping United climb to seventh in the Premier League table, unbeaten in their last five matches and sitting on 18 points.

Speaking on , brought to fans by Sky Bet, Rooney said: "The recruitment at Manchester United before last summer was horrendous. They were just bringing big names in – you look at Lukaku, Zlatan, Pogba – they're good players but they were just bringing names in and spending enormous amounts of money. It's going to take a bit of time to get over those mistakes."

  • Amorim's Red Devils finding form

United’s recent performances suggest a team rediscovering its rhythm. After a shaky start to the 2025–26 campaign, the Red Devils bounced back with three consecutive Premier League wins in October, beating Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton. And Rooney believes that the Red Devils could qualify for the Champions League next season.

"If you look at Manchester United over the last ten years, the players have been absolutely battered," he continued.  "Now they've got a couple of results and you can see a bit of confidence coming back. You can even say that in the manager. They're gradually getting better, there's definitely been some improvement. It's been really tough for Ruben Amorim and I've been critical of him. We are seeing them improve though and players are getting to know each other a bit better. There's some promising signs and although they're not going to win the league they could possibly sneak into the top four."

Head coach calls for growth and grit

But as has so often been the case at Old Trafford, progress has been fragile. November brought back-to-back 2-2 draws against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham, exposing lingering defensive frailties. Speaking to after the Tottenham draw, Amorim acknowledged the mixed emotions.

He said: "During the game we felt like the three points were there to take home. But then with everything that happened, Harry Maguire and Casemiro coming off and conceding two goals… we scored again and it's a point. When you cannot win you don't lose, once again we did that. We have so much to grow as a team, because today was our day to win this game.

"We need to look at ourselves, we were not pressing with the same intensity, we felt comfortable but we need to understand that if we had more bravery we kill the game. But sometimes this happens, you have a better first half than second. We believe in our capacity to score goals until the last minute. It's a little frustration, but also pride at the response of the players at the response to second goal of Tottenham. This is the tip of the iceberg, we are at the beginning of becoming a strong team, so we have a lot to do."

United will return from the international break with a crucial clash against Everton on Monday, November 24.

Nuno tipped to take behind-scenes action vs West Ham star after disappointing incident

New West Ham boss Nuno Espírito Santo has wasted no time making his mark at Rush Green, and he’s now being tipped to take action against another star player after his controversial James Ward-Prowse decision.

Nuno assessing West Ham squad after James Ward-Prowse axe

Almost immediately after replacing Graham Potter last Saturday, Nuno axed Ward-Prowse from the matchday squad for his debut game in the dugout at Everton, despite the player being a mainstay for his predecessor.

West Ham players were allegedly left shocked by Nuno’s decision to drop the 30-year-old (GiveMeSport), and it has since been reported that Ward-Prowse has no future at the London Stadium under Potter’s heir.

The Englishman could even re-join former club Southampton after being told that he’s surplus to requirements behind-the-scenes (Dean Jones), but Nuno has attempted to quell reports about Ward-Prowse by suggesting that the midfielder still has a chance to play his way into the squad.

However, despite Nuno’s attempts to silence the noise, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano is among the media sources to claim that Ward-Prowse’s January exit is a very real possibility.

For other members of the squad, Nuno is set to assess them over the coming months.

Ward-Prowse is actually just one free-kick goal away from equalling David Beckham’s all-time Premier League record of 18, but all the signs suggest that he won’t be reaching that milestone in East London.

In terms of other players who could meet Nuno’s wrath, former Brentford boss Martin Allen has claimed that the 51-year-old could take action against star midfielder Lucas Paqueta after an incident in the 1-1 draw at Everton.

Nuno tipped to take action against Lucas Paqueta after West Ham incident

Speaking to West Ham Zone, Allen tipped Nuno to pull Paqueta aside for talks in the West Ham offices.

This is due to the Brazil international’s playacting on Merseyside, with Paqueta going down and clutching his face after a challenge from Vitali Mykolenko in a possible attempt to get the defender sent off.

The 28-year-old sent a clear message of loyalty to West Ham after his goal against Nottingham Forest, kissing the badge amid reports at the time that he could join Aston Villa, with Paqueta ultimately deciding to stay with Nuno’s side.

West Ham stuck by the former Lyon star during his spot-fixing scandal, and he could now be looking to repay the Irons’ faith by making an excellent start under Nuno.

A 2022/2023-esque performance against Arsenal wouldn’t go amiss this weekend, with Nuno up against the Premier League’s set-piece specialists and potential title favourites, before West Ham take a fortnight off for the international break.

Forget Kudus & Simons: Spurs star is becoming a "superstar" under Frank

Tottenham Hotspur’s qualification for the Champions League at the end of the 2024/25 campaign was a superb achievement, handing the fanbase a reason to be positive after a dismal season.

Playing up against some of Europe’s elite will hand a generation of supporters memories to last a lifetime – not to mention the financial benefits to the football club.

Such funds have allowed the board to back Thomas Frank in the transfer market, subsequently landing the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons in recent months.

The duo cost upwards of £100m during the recent window, but will inject needed quality and talent into the frontline in the Lilywhites’ hopes of building on their Europa League triumph.

Both players made their European debuts for Frank’s side in last night’s clash against Villarreal, but how did they fare in the 1-0 triumph on home soil?

Simons & Kudus’ performances against Villarreal

Dutch international Simons started his second game for Spurs last night, but doing so once again in a slightly unnatural left-sided midfield role – rather than his preferred number ten position.

However, he still managed to produce some admirable numbers, completing three passes into the final third and completing two out of the three long balls he attempted.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The 22-year-old also managed to make three interceptions and made three recoveries out of possession – showcasing the impact he had at both ends of the pitch.

As for Kudus, he continues to go from strength to strength for the Lilywhites, producing yet another impressive performance against the LaLiga side in North London.

The Ghanaian international completed two successful take-ons, along with a 50% cross completion rate, arguably being the side’s most potent threat throughout the encounter.

He further managed to impress by completing 86% of the passes he attempted, but like Simons, also offered a workman-like display out of possession, making six ball recoveries.

Despite the showings of the aforementioned duo, one other first-team member managed to trump them both and produce a first Champions League appearance to remember in the triumph.

The Spurs star who’s becoming Frank’s best player

Spurs’ recruitment over the last couple of years has been sensational – as seen by the recent displays produced by big-money additions Kudus and Simons.

However, the groundwork has been laid in years gone by, even making stellar additions even before Frank took the reins from now Nottingham
Forest boss Ange Postecoglou.

Such additions allowed the Aussie to claim European glory last time around, with Frank hoping to achieve similar success in the near future, given the talent at his disposal.

Not all of the signings made have had to result in huge sums being spent, as demonstrated by the bargain £8.5m deal to land Lucas Bergvall from Djurgarden last summer.

The 19-year-old may still be working his way into the spotlight, given his tender age, but he’s already become a crucial cog within the Lilywhites’ first-team over recent months.

He’s already racked up over 50 senior appearances for the North London outfit, with last night one of his most impressive showings since his move from Sweden.

The teenager started at the heart of the side last night, arguably being the most impressive talent within Frank’s side as they kick-started their Champions League campaign.

Bergvall, who was labelled as a “superstar” by Spurs writer Mitch Fretton, featured for 89 minutes, making 80% of the passes he attempted, whilst also completing 50% of his dribbles.

Such numbers highlight the threat he posed with the ball at his feet, not to mention the ball he whipped into the box that was fumbled by Luiz Junior, which resulted in the only goal of the game.

The Swede also made one block and one recovery, offering an excellent box-to-box option at the heart of Frank’s side during the European triumph in North London.

As a result of his display, Bergvall was handed an 8/10 match rating by the Daily Express’ Jack McEachen, whilst also claiming the Man of the Match award – further highlighting his superb display against the Yellow Submarine.

Such a display has made him a key component of Frank’s first-team squad, with the sky truly being the limit for the sensational teenage talent.

If he can continue on his current development path, there’s no reason as to why he can’t be one of the first names on the teamsheet – potentially offering a better addition than big-money signings, Kudus and Simons.

Vince leads Kings' batting effort as Sultans are eliminated

Karachi Kings dumped Multan Sultans out of a tournament they never really got into, with former Sultan James Vince scoring a majestic unbeaten 65 to ask Sultans to chase 205. Sultans never looked to have the belief they would get anywhere close, and, eventually, didn’t. Kings were tidy, if not spectacular, letting Sultans’ tame, limp display on a blistering afternoon in Lahore do the job for them, and helping themselves to an 87-run win. This game was moved from Multan to Lahore despite Sultans’ objections. But it would have taken more than home advantage to overcome the gulf in the two sides’ performances on Thursday. David Willey conceded just 24 runs in his four overs, but when Michael Bracewell bowled the second over and conceded just as many in those six balls, it was more representative of what Sultans would dish up. That onslaught from David Warner on the New Zealand spinner set the tone for the innings, even if the Kings captain miscued Willey to point for an entertaining off just 30 13 balls. It was one of three wickets Sultans took within 11 balls, and would briefly have raised hopes that they would rein Kings in with wickets. Either side of Warner’s dismissal, Ubaid Shah removed Tim Seifert and Omair Yousuf. But it brought Vince and Irfan Khan together, as they took charge of the middle overs. As Sultans wilted in the heat, the pair cashed in, compiling 78 in 56 balls, and setting up a platform for a big finish.Sultans promised their fielding would stand out this tournament, and for reasons they wouldn’t want, it has. The shelling of a top edge from Vince by Usama Mir at square leg in the 17th over took the Englishman to 50, before both he and Khushdil Shah cut loose. The last 14 balls of the innings yielded 45 runs as Khushdil’s unbeaten 33 from 13 deliveries led the way as Vince offered ample support in his slipstream, smashing Ubaid for a six and a four in a penultimate over that went for 19 runs.Multan Sultans removed Mohammad Rizwan for a duck•PCB

When Khushdil cleared his front leg as well as long-on to heave Chris Jordan for six off the innings’ final delivery and dragged the total above 200, it was merely an exclamation mark on Kings’ dominance.Like a film that has revealed its hand halfway through but still needs to get through the remaining time, the second innings began. Sultans demonstrated there was little fight left, and their captain Mohammad Rizwan fell for a duck in the second over to Abbas Afridi. Usman Khan, once more, played an ordinary shot to scoop a wide delivery into Vince’s hands, while Yasir Khan’s breezy 26 was brought to an abrupt end by Aamer Jamal in the fifth over.Curtis Campher, though, went after Afridi in the final over of the powerplay to bring Sultans up to 53 in six overs, not far off from where Kings were at that stage. However, Sultans couldn’t bring themselves to put together a partnership of note, and the collapse that feels just around the corner was about to be realised. They lost five wickets for 14 runs to go from 76 for 4 to 90 for 9, wickets scattering like seeds in the wind, with Mohammad Nabi the primary grateful recipient. Two wickets in two balls from Nabi put Bracewell and Willey out of the equation before Khushdil mopped up Iftikhar Ahmed and Kamran Ghulam. Nabi added a third before Chris Jordan and Ubaid Shah found 27 runs for the final wicket that got Sultans to three figures while avoiding a three-figure defeat, but when Mir Hamza applied the coup de grace by getting Ubaid, it was almost more a relief for Sultans than Kings.

Kohli: India ready to take on the world for the next eight years

Virat Kohli believes India have a squad “ready to take on the world” for the next eight years, following their victory in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in Dubai.”When you leave, you want to leave the team in a better place, I feel we’ve a squad that’s ready to take on the world for the next eight years,” Kohli said on the broadcast after the game. “Shubman [Gill] has been outstanding, Shreyas [Iyer] beautiful, KL [Rahul] has finished games, and Hardik [Pandya] has been superb with the bat.”Kohli said the Champions Trophy triumph somewhat made up for India’s Test series loss in Australia. “It’s been amazing. We wanted to bounce back after a tough Australian tour, and wanted to win a big tournament, and we ended up doing that. So it’s an amazing feeling.”Related

Standing beside Gill during the celebrations, Kohli was asked for his thoughts on leaving the dressing room a better place when he eventually finishes up. “There’s so much talent in the dressing room,” he said. “They’re trying to take their game further and we [seniors] are just happy to be of help, sharing our experience and that’s what makes this Indian team so strong.”These are the things you want to play for [titles], playing under pressure and putting your hand up. The whole team, everyone has put their hands up sometimes or other during the course of the tournament. Everyone has put up impactful performances, we’ve been part of an amazing team, the amount of work we’ve done in the practice sessions, it feels great.”Kohli had words of appreciation for New Zealand. “Amazing, we’ve always been in awe with what they can do with the limited number of players they have had over the years, and just maximise their talent,” he said. “Every time we played against them in big games, we knew they were going to come with a set plan. No team in world cricket executes plans as well as they do.”Every fielder knows where the bowler is going to bowl, you can sense it, they’re all attacking the ball, they know the bowler is going to be accurate. Credit to them for being the most consistent team in the last few tournaments. The reason for that is the immense belief in their skills, and the amount of talent they have they utilise that to the maximum.”They’re easily the best fielding side in the world, a huge shout-out to them. They continue to display why they are one of the top teams in the world. Again, a great campaign. It’s sad to see a very good friend [Kane Williamson] on the losing side, but I’ve been on the losing side a couple of times when he has been on the winning side, so only love between us.”

Calls for Women's Ashes to include three Tests

Players from Australia and England have called for future multi-format Women’s Ashes series to include three Test matches, although the chances of that becoming a reality are slim, certainly in the next four years. In the upcoming series, the one-off Test – a four-day match under floodlights at the MCG – will be played as the final instalment of the Ashes for the first time since it was introduced in 2013. The match is worth four points for a win and two for a draw meaning one side could be in a position knowing that avoiding defeat would be enough to win the series.England need an outright points victory to regain the Ashes with Australia having clung on in 2023, which was shared 8-8 despite the visitors winning the Test at Trent Bridge, which began the series.Related

Prior to the multi-format concept, the Ashes was decided purely on Test cricket. The last time a series involved more than a single game was in 2005 and Australia allrounder Ashleigh Gardner has led the call for three Tests to go alongside the three ODIs and three T20Is.”From [the] workload [point of view], it would be quite tough with how busy our summers are, but personally I would love to see three, three, three,” Gardner, who took 8 for 66 in the previous Ashes Test, said. “It’s obviously going to make the tours a lot longer, [and] not sure where you are going to fit it in, knowing we are still going to have to play overseas competitions as well. It would be interesting to see over the next four to five years where that gets to.”But I know personally I’d love to play more Test cricket against England. Playing the one Test feels like a bit of novelty sometimes. We obviously have some really good white-ball games against England and other nations around the world but think the way our teams match up it would be a really cool Test series to see who would come out on top for that. But don’t think that’s probably going to change anytime soon.”England batter Tammy Beaumont, another star of the 2023 Test where she made a double-century, backed Gardner’s views on an expansion of the format, saying it would help build the storylines around a series.”Absolutely, I completely agree with Ash,” she said. “I’d love to see three, three, three. The best thing about the Ashes is the narrative, the rivalry, how it builds over time. You saw in the India-Australia men’s Test series, the narratives build in a five-match series, and even in a three-match series, whether it’s the kind of things like [Jasprit] Bumrah always getting the same people out or things like that. As an opening batter, that’s part of why you love the game, that battle of trying to maybe getting one-up on an opening bowler, think it builds even more in Test cricket. That’s why I love getting the whites on and I’d love to see more.”Late last year, the next four-year cycle of the Future Tours Programme was locked in and, while West Indies will return to Test cricket, further matches being added to Ashes series would appear unlikely.”Space in the calendar is a real challenge,” outgoing Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said. “What I would like to see is more countries playing multi-format series more regularly.”Ashleigh Gardner’s 8 for 66 secured Australia a vital victory in the 2023 Ashes Test•Getty Images

The next FTP also sees the Women’s Premier League (WPL) move to January, meaning this Ashes series is the last time for at least four years that Australia will be able to play in the prime summer holiday window with their main international block moving to February and March. While the 2023 Ashes in England, which took place concurrently with the men’s series, drew record crowds, there is a sense in Australia that the game hasn’t quite been able to recapture the momentum that was building when the 2020 T20 World Cup final was played in front of 86,174 at the MCG only for Covid to shut down the world a few days later. Alongside the MCG Test in this Ashes, T20Is will also be played at the SCG and Adelaide Oval.”This is such an important series for us,” Gardner said. “The Ashes in general in such a big series, pretty much just behind the World Cup for us in my opinion. We’ve been so successful over the last five or six years, it’s probably one part of our game we’ve been a little bit disappointed with is not seeing as many people as we would have like.”Obviously to have the T20 World Cup five years ago now and to pretty much sell out the MCG, then for Covid to kind of put dampener on the path Australian cricket was going… but fingers crossed after a pretty successful men’s Test series people can come and support our series as well because we are going up against our fiercest rivals and they just went against theirs.”

Perfect Kuhn replacement: Celtic intensify interest in "explosive" £6m star

After an inauspicious but victorious start to their Scottish Premiership title defense, Celtic’s need for attacking reinforcements was emphatically underlined further.

On Sunday, after the champions’ flag had been flown, the Hoops struggled to break down a solid and stubborn St Mirren, requiring a deflected strike from Luke McCowan with just two minutes remaining to pinch all three points at Parkhead.

In less than a fortnight, Brendan Rodgers’ side will take on either Kairat or Slovan Bratislava in a season-defining Champions League play-off tie, the first leg in Almaty between that pair ended 1-0 on Wednesday, and supporters are concerned about the squad’s current lack of quality.

So, with that clash looming large, could Celtic soon sign a new highly-rated youngster?

Celtic's search for firepower

Inarguably, Celtic’s squad is weaker now than it was in May, largely due to the fact Nicolas Kühn has been sold to Como for a reported fee of £16.5m.

The German winger scored 21 goals across all competitions last season, most notably bagging a brace during the famous Champions League victory over RB Leipzig, also on target as the Hoops came agonisingly close to a victory over Bayern Munich in Bavaria.

Nicolas Kuhn

This saw him sold for a more than 500% profit, having arrived from Rapid Wien for just £3m a year and a half earlier, but fans are demanding that this money be reinvested in a similarly high-quality replacement.

Well, according to a report from TEAMtalk, Celtic are intensifying their interest in Brøndby winger Clement Bischoff, with Premier League trio Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Brighton also noted as being interested.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

They add that, should he move to Glasgow, he would add ‘dynamism’ to Rodgers’ wide options, valued at just over £6m.

It’s safe to assume Celtic have sent scouts to Brøndbyvester, given their long-standing interest in Brøndby’s top scorer last season Mathias Kvistgaarden, who instead joined Norwich City for £6.9m, but will the Scottish champions land their man this time?

What Clement Bischoff would bring to Celtic

Still only 19 years old, Bischoff made his Danish Superligaen debut as recently as February 2024, but was a key figure for Brøndby last season, making 39 senior appearances across all competitions, 27 of which were starts.

He scored two league goals, on target against Viborg and Lyngby, while also providing ten assists, starting both legs of Brøndby’s Conference League qualifying victory over Havnar Bóltfelag to start this campaign. He also started their first two Superligaen fixtures, scoring the only goal as they beat Nordsjælland away from home last month.

His performances saw him included in Denmark’s squad for the under-21 European Championships earlier this summer, starting three of four fixtures, netting against Ukraine and during the quarter-final defeat to France in Prešov.

During that tournament, Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labelled him a “quality winger”, adding elsewhere that he is “flamboyant”, noting that his strengths include “explosive” pace, dribbling, ball-striking technique and the fact he is ambidextrous.

So how does he compare to the man he could well be replacing in Glasgow Kühn?

As the table documents, while Kühn comes out on top for the vast majority of metrics, it’s worth noting that Bischoff is still a teenager, while the German joined Celtic as a 24-year-old, and played almost twice as many minutes during the timeframe analysed.

The young Dane’s statistics are largely similar to Kühn’s, which is certainly high praise, coming out on top when it comes to shooting accuracy and crosses per game, while only a small amount below in terms of shots, assists and chances created.

Thus, Bischoff is clearly an ultra-talented player, one that could prove to be a bargain if Celtic are able to secure his signature.
