Giorgos Giakoumakis’ name has been doing the rounds in Celtic circles again recently after it was reported that Cruz Azul have put him up for sale.

The Daily Record reported on the news and added that the centre-forward would “love a return” to Parkhead, having left to sign for Atlanta United in the second half of the 2022/23 campaign.

He has scored seven goals in 18 appearances in all competitions on loan at PAOK so far this season, per Sofascore, and has scored four goals in his last three appearances for the Greek giants.

Why Celtic should not re-sign Giakoumakis

Despite the prompt from the Daily Record adding that the striker would like to return to the club, Wilfried Nancy should avoid a deal to bring the Greek international back to Parkhead.

Giakoumakis scored an eye-catching 19 goals in 15 starts across two seasons in the Scottish Premiership with the Hoops, per Sofascore, which shows that he was a lethal scorer in limited game time in Glasgow.

However, he has not scored more than seven goals in a league season since he fired in 19 goals in the MLS in his debut campaign with Atlanta in 2023, per Sofascore, which suggests that he is past his best days in front of goal.

At the age of 31, Giakoumakis is now at the wrong end of his career, and Celtic should, instead, be looking for a player who can be Nancy’s long-term number nine, rather than a short-term addition.

Therefore, the Scottish giants should use the upcoming January transfer window to bring in a younger number nine who can lead the line for many years to come at Parkhead.

It was recently reported that Celtic are leading the race to sign GAIS centre-forward Ibrahim Diabate, who is valued at around £3m by the Swedish side, when the January transfer window opens for business.

The 26-year-old star, who is five years younger than Giakoumakis, has been in impressive form in the Allsvenskan in the 2025 campaign, and could be the clinical centre-forward that Nancy needs at Parkhead.

Giakoumakis scored 19 goals from 16.47 xG in his Premiership career with Celtic, per FotMob. This shows that he was an incredibly clinical marksman for the Scottish giants who rarely turned down a big opportunity to find the back of the net.

So far this season, current first-choice number nine Johnny Kenny has scored four goals from 6.03 xG in the Premiership for the Hoops, per FotMob, which shows that he has been incredibly wasteful in front of goal.

Diabate, who was described as a “super physical” striker by analyst Jan Schultz, has racked up 19 goals in 29 appearances for GAIS in the 2025 league campaign, outperforming his xG of 13.80.

His prowess in the air is eye-catching because Celtic have not had a physically intimidating centre-forward for some time. Johnny Kenny and Kelechi Iheanacho are more technical strikers in the current squad, and Kyogo Furuhashi, for all of his qualities, was not a physical presence.

Diabate’s form this year suggests that he has the physical and technical attributes to be Nancy’s own version of Giakoumakis, as a clinical striker who can make the most of his chances whilst also providing the team with an outlet at the top end of the pitch.

Whether or not he can translate that form and physicality over to the Premiership remains to be seen, but his impressive statistics suggest that he is worth taking a risk on in January, as he could be a brilliant addition to Celtic’s squad as the ruthless striker they currently lack.

The Verdict: Big news…

The lowdown

Villa paid £28.8m to sign the 24-year-old from Bayer Leverkusen just last summer. That made him the third-biggest signing in the club’s history, behind Emiliano Buendia and Ollie Watkins, but the winger hasn’t been able to make too much of an impact up to this point.

Having struggled to stay fit, he has started only four Premier League matches, making a further eight appearances from the bench (totalling 472 minutes).

The Jamaican’s solitary Villa goal so far came in the 3-0 win over Everton in September, although he has also provided two assists.

The latest

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones suggested that Villa might let Bailey leave after just 12 months if the right offer arrives at the club’s door.

The journalist admitted: “Bailey I’m not so sure about. I think that he really could be moved on in the summer in the right circumstances.”

The verdict

It’s worth remembering just how good Bailey was at Leverkusen last season. He scored 15 goals and laid on 11 assists in all competitions, and with that kind of return, he looked like a real coup for Villa at the time.

Back in September, then-manager Dean Smith outlined his expectation that the 24-year-old would be a ‘crowd favourite’ at Villa Park.

According to Transfermarkt, Bailey had only missed 13 games through injury across his entire career before he moved to England, which should surely give Villa hope that he can overcome the problems he has encountered this season.

Wolves are in the midst of a poor run of form having lost their three previous Premier League games with a 2-0 defeat against Crystal Palace at Molineux over the weekend following on from away defeats against Arsenal and West Ham United.

In terms of who that player could be, 19-year-old centre-forward Conor Carty could potentially catch the eye of the Old Gold manager.

As a product of Wolves’ youth system, the Irishman has racked up a total of 64 appearances across their U18 and U23 sides, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists along the way, showing that he certainly has a lot of attacking and creative talent in him.

Labelled by James Collins as a player that is “growing all the time” that has delivered “threatening” performances for the U23s, Carty could be just what Lage needs to get his side firing.

Having had previous success with giving youth a chance earlier in the season with 19-year-old midfielder Luke Cundle, who delivered a “very assured” display in Wolves’ 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last month in his first Premier League start, the former Benfica boss could replicate that same sort of move by giving the young striker a chance to show what he’s capable of in the Premier League.

After all, it can’t get much worse than Fabio Silva who has not found the net all season long.

Liverpool arguably have the best full-back pairing in the world in Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who have both become an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s team.

A pathway to the first team for Kostas Tsimikas and Neco Williams has thus far been difficult and limited to mere cup appearances and the odd game where one of the regular full-bacvs isn’t fit – so much so that the latter has gone out on loan to Championship leaders Fulham.

However, with the Reds still fighting on all fronts for the quadruple after winning the Carabao Cup a couple weeks ago, opportunities to impress Klopp could be available. Should that also prove to be the case in future seasons, the importance of having depth in the wing-back positions will soon be realised.

One player who has been tipped to become a Liverpool star in the future is left-back Callum Scanlon, who penned his first professional deal with the club this week after signing from Birmingham City as a 15-year-old in December 2020 for £500k.

An England youth international, the 17-year-old is described as ‘highly rated’ at the club, where he has nailed down a starting spot with the under-18s after making his debut last May. The youngster’s former academy coach James Atkins has hailed the starlet as “lightning quick” and “technically very good”.

Scanlon has also shown the ability to play in midfield, just like Alexander-Arnold, who himself graduated from the Reds’ academy.

What makes the 23-year-old such an important player in the Liverpool team, perhaps even more so than Robertson, is his ability to not just double up as a winger in attack, but also occasionally drift into the middle of the pitch to make things happen, much like Manchester City’s inverted full-back Joao Cancelo.

However, the West Derby native does this more because he has the technical ability to play in those areas, compared to Cancelo who also has that technical ability, but is a right-footed defender playing on the left, and cutting in is natural to him.

If Scanlon also has the technical ability to play in midfield, he could follow in the footsteps of Alexander-Arnold as opposed to Robertson. However, should he continue to develop at the same rate, but with his athleticism, aggression and strong delivery, he could perhaps play more like the Scottish defender, bombing up and down the left flank to good effect.

Aston Villa are reportedly in the hunt to sign Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij this summer with manager Steven Gerrard keen to improve his defensive options.

What’s the story?

According to Football Insider, Villa are keeping tabs on the Dutch defender with Gerrard looking to sign an A-list centre-back this summer.

The report also states that the defender was valued at around £40m in January with the 30-year-old’s current deal at the San Siro expiring in 2023.

The West Midland club’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also reportedly interested in bringing de Vrij to England this summer with manager Antonio Conte in charge when Inter won the Serie A title last season, with the Dutchman a key contributor to their success.

In fact, the Italian coach once exclaimed that the defender was “like Bonucci.”

Aston Villa must swoop for de Vrij

Valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt despite having just over a year left on his contract, de Vrij certainly won’t come cheap for whoever lands the defender’s signature.

However, it’s no secret that Aston Villa have ambitious plans for the upcoming transfer window, particularly after being able to lure a player of Philippe Coutinho’s pedigree to Villa Park in January, albeit on loan.

The Villans are on course for their first top-half finish in the top-flight for 11 years which will lay decent foundations for Gerrard after the Englishman’s first season in charge of the West Midlands side, having joined from Rangers in November.

Naturally, the next step will be to consolidate that place and push for European qualification. The signing of de Vrij would undoubtedly be a serious statement of intent.

The 30-year-old defender has spent almost eight years in Italy having joined Lazio from Feyenoord in 2014, where he was dubbed a “monster” by teammate Mauricio, before making the move to Inter Milan in 2018 on a free transfer.

Although, this isn’t the first time a Premier League club has been linked with a swoop for the 55-cap Netherlands international.

As well as his impressive international experience, de Vrij boasts impressive experience at club level too, winning the Scudetto last season whilst racking up 46 appearances in European competition as well as 347 in top-flight league football across the Eredivisie and Serie A.

Compared to Aston Villa’s current centre-backs, the 30-year-old is a major step up in quality and calibre.

Although Tyrone Mings has established himself as a regular in England manager Gareth Southgate’s squads, the 29-year-old has only found regular game time in the Premier League whilst being at Villa during the past three seasons.

As for the likes of Ezri Konsa, Calum Chambers and Kourtney Hause, none are current internationals whilst Chambers’ experience of playing in Europe and winning the FA Cup and Community Shield is as experienced as any of Villa’s current defenders get.

Moreover, according to SofaScore, De Vrij wins the majority of both his aerial and ground duels, has a 92% pass completion rate, only loses the ball 4.8 times per match whilst having 62.5 touches on average per Serie A game, also making at least one tackle and interception per game.

Contrastingly, Aston Villa’s best defender statistically, Tyrone Mings, averages 58.5 touches per league game whilst completing 80% of his passes, losing possession 10.4 times per game on average.

The Englishman does manage to make at least one interception per game but is currently averaging 0.6 tackles.

It’s clearly evident that the signing of de Vrij would seriously improve Gerrard’s squad, the main issue will be convincing the Dutchman to swap the San Siro for Villa Park.

Frank Lampard and Everton must do everything in their power to keep Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Goodison Park, with interest said to be high this summer.

What’s the latest?

The Everton striker has been heavily linked with a move to Mikel Arteta’s resurged Arsenal side, with reports suggesting that Calvert-Lewin could in fact leave in the summer to help the Merseyside club with the £373m losses suffered over the last few seasons.

The rules surrounding financial fair play allow for maximum combined losses of £105m over three years, with Everton looking as though they will be forced to sell one of their big-name players in order to comply with FFP.

Former Tottenham and Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has suggested that the 25-year-old England forward would be better placed at West Ham United:

“I think for Calvert-Lewin, West Ham. They need another centre-forward, they cross the ball.”

Though Bent also added that Everton would have to lower their reported asking price of £60m if they wanted to attract viable suitors for the 25-year-old.

“If Everton ask for £60m no one’s buying him for that.” When prompted on Calvert-Lewin’s worth, Bent said: “£35m-£40m”

With the pressures of FFP surrounding them, Everton will need to offload one of either Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison in order to relieve some pressure and reach a more confident position when it comes to balancing their books.
