CSA Invitation XI batsmen make short work of 256 chase

A CSA Invitation XI headlined by internationals AB de Villiers and JP Duminy comfortably chased 256 against the touring Bangladesh side, who were bolstered by the arrival of Shakib Al Hasan. Though Shakib’s importance to the Bangladesh team was underlined when he top-scored with a 67-ball 68, it was not enough to trouble the South African batsmen on their own turf.Bangladesh showed their strongest sign of being more willing to front up when ODI captain Mashrafe Mortaza chose to bat in Bloemfontein. Test captain Mushfiqur Rahim had made the opposite call on batsmen-friendly surfaces in both Tests and his reasoning was almost justified when Bangladesh slumped to 63 for 4 in the 15th over in this match. The wounds from Test performance still seemed raw as the Bangladesh openers were dismissed by experienced Dolphins campaigner Robbie Frylinck. No. 3 Liton Das was caught behind off medium-pacer Malusi Siboto for 8 and Mushfiqur, who has not suffered further complications from the blow he took to the head on Sunday, fell to left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso for 22. Shakib and Mahmudullah put on 57 for the fifth wicket before Shakib and Sabbir Rahman shared a sixth-wicket stand of 76 and Bangladesh were back on track.Just when Shakib could have started to push on, he also fell to Phangiso, who only played in the match because Keshav Maharaj was rested. Sabbir went on to score 52 but Bangladesh did not have much more to offer. Their last four wickets fell for 36 runs, they were dismissed with 11 balls remaining in their innings and the CSA XI only needed to score at 5.1 runs an over to win.New Test opener Aiden Markram and national Under-19 player Matthew Breetzke started much quicker than that. Their opening stand was worth 147 inside 26 overs, with Markram blazing a 68-ball 82 to make a case for inclusion in the limited-overs’ sides, and Breetzke proving his potential with a patient 71. Nasir Hossain separated the pair when he caught Markram off his own bowling, bringing CSA XI captain JP Duminy to the crease. When Breetzke was bowled five overs later and de Villiers walked out, Bangladesh were bowling to a pair they will see a lot of in the next two weeks but they did not manage to strike any fear into them. Duminy and de Villiers were together for 64 balls and scored 62 runs between them before Duminy was stumped. De Villiers went on to score 43, his highest score in three innings this summer before he was caught behind. He has only played one first-class game this season, for Titans against Warriors and scored 5 and 32 and is now available across all formats for the national side.Bangladesh will not have to worry about facing de Villiers in whites but have much bigger problems on their hands. Apart from not being able to post enough runs to challenge their opposition, they have also yet to bowl them out once on this tour.

Southampton Make Contact Over Deal For £72k-p/w Titan

An update has emerged on Southampton and their plans to bolster their set of defensive options ahead of the start of the 2023/24 season…

What's the latest Southampton transfer news?

According to Football Insider, the Saints have made contact with Everton to enquire about a possible swoop for central defender Mason Holgate this summer.

The report claims that the Championship side are eyeing up a deal to sign the £72k-per-week enforcer on loan and that Sean Dyche has agreed to allow him to move on.

It states that Premier League side Sheffield United and fellow second tier outfit Leeds United have also contacted the Toffees to explore a move for the 26-year-old ace.

How good is Mason Holgate?

The Everton enforcer is a player with the potential to be an excellent performer for the Saints if Russell Martin can help him to rediscover his best form.

It has been reported by the Daily Mail that Holgate is being targeted by Southampton as a possible replacement for Duje Caleta-Car, who is attracting interest from Ligue 1 side Lyon, and his displays at Goodison Park in the past suggest that he has the scope to become a dream heir to the Croatian titan.

Southampton centre-back Duje Caleta-Car.

The English gem has averaged a dismal Sofascore rating of 6.65 or lower over the last two Premier League seasons but his form throughout the 2019/20 campaign suggests that the quality is there for him to be a superb player.

Holgate averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.01 that year, which would have placed him third in the Saints team last term, as he made 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game and won 63% of his individual duels at the back, whilst the talented battler did not make a single error leading to a shot or goal for the opposition.

This shows that the ex-West Bromwich Albion loanee does have the ability to deliver consistently brilliant performances at Premier League level, which suggests that the potential is there for him to be an outstanding performer in the Championship.

A drop down to the second tier could help the defender to get back to his best and a loan would mean that Southampton are not burdened with him in the long-term if he fails to recapture his previous form.

Holgate could, therefore, be a dream replacement for Caleta-Car if the former Marseille colossus joins Lyon as his statistics during the 2019/20 season are more impressive than the current St. Mary's defender's from last term.

The 26-year-old warrior averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.90 across 13 league matches for the club and won 57% of his duels, although he did make one mistake that led to a shot for the other team.

Only four Saints players averaged a higher Sofascore rating and this suggests that the £52k-per-week "leader" – as once hailed by the Liverpool ECHO journalist Sam Carroll – was one of the team's top performers, which is why it is crucial for Martin to bring in a quality replacement for him before the deadline.

Holgate's form for Everton in the past shows that the potential is there for him to be that player, which is why the Southampton head coach could land a dream heir to Caleta-Car at centre-back with this possible swoop for the English talent.

Rangers: Beale Could Solve Key Issue In Swoop For £2.5m Gem At Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers don’t appear to be completely finished with their transfer business this summer, with a few more players likely to arrive in the coming weeks to bolster Michael Beale’s squad.

That is despite seven signings already, as a total overhaul has been underway at Ibrox since the Premiership season finished in May.

The player trading model also appears to be in full swing at Rangers, with Beale maximising the value of his outgoings. Antonio Colak was signed for £1.8m last summer and has recently departed for a fee of £2.5m, while Fashion Sakala, who cost nothing in 2021, now looks set to leave for £4m, an impressive profit which could benefit the squad.

This should now be reinvested into the team, especially in regard to signing another centre-back as this remains the biggest issue at the club currently, despite the recent signing of Leon Balogun.

Leon King is injured, Ben Davies has attracted interest and although John Souttar ended last season well, he has a long history with injury problems and this could potentially disrupt another campaign, leaving Beale with a need to add someone else to his defence.

Are Rangers still keen on Jonathan Panzo?

According to Football Scotland, Rangers are still keen on signing Panzo this summer, although the finances still have to be ironed out if they are to secure his signature.

It will take a fee of £2.5m to sign the Englishman from Nottingham Forest and if Beale manages to move a few more players out the door in the next week or so, this shouldn’t represent much of a problem.

Could Jonathan Panzo improve Rangers?

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Coventry City from Forest and came so close to leading them back to the Premier League following a 22-year absence, losing in the playoff final to Luton Town.

Across his spell in the second tier, Panzo made 1.6 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 2.9 clearances per game, and these figures would be good enough to rank him as sixth, first and second across the whole Rangers squad for the same metrics, suggesting he could offer some excellent qualities.

He even impressed compared to positional peers across the next big eight leagues in Europe, ranking in the top 8% for interceptions per 90 (2.01) and the top 15% for tackles per 90 (1.81) and given that he is only 22, there is still plenty of scope for improvement.

The youngster was hailed by Forest U21 coach Dave Rogers previously, who said:

"He is a great professional. He's enthusiastic and has got good experience and energy too. He brings a great vibe to the dressing room too."

Coventry City defender Jonathan Panzo.

These are all wonderful traits and something which Beale looks to be building at the club, filling the Ibrox side with young, hungry players who bring a good energy to the team and Panzo would be an excellent choice.

The Gers conceded 37 goals last year, which doesn’t sound too bad on the surface, yet it was six more than the previous campaign and improvements must be made to this key issue which could hamper Beale if it isn’t solved.

Liverpool Eyeing Up Swoop For Ice Cold £35m Titan

An update has emerged on Liverpool's search for new midfielders to bolster their playing squad before the end of the summer transfer window…

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

According to FootballTransfers, the Reds are considering a swoop to sign Bayern Munich titan Leon Goretzka ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The report claims that the German international is one of the 'prime' candidates to fill out Jurgen Klopp's squad as speculation swirls over Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and Thiago Alcantara's respective futures at the club.

It states that the Bundesliga giants want to overhaul their squad over the coming weeks and, for that reason, they are open to cashing in on the central midfielder for a fee in the region of €40m (£35m).

He would be the third new addition of the summer for Liverpool after they snapped up Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to improve their options in midfield.

How old is Leon Goretzka?

The Bayern machine is in what should be the prime years of his career at the age of 28 and would, therefore, arrive at Anfield as a player who is ready to make an instant impact.

He is not a young player with plenty of development still to come or an experienced veteran whose powers are waning, which could allow him to hit the ground running.

Goretzka has proven himself to be a combative midfielder who can also provide a significant goal threat and that could make him perfect for Szoboszlai next season.

Former Leipzig wizard Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Hungary international, who recently signed from RB Leipzig, could provide the towering German with the opportunities he needs to find the back of the net as his time in the Bundesliga suggests that he is a creative magician.

Szoboszlai registered 2.3 key passes per match for his former club last season, which resulted in 14 'big chances' being created for his teammates. Meanwhile, no Liverpool player managed more than Trent Alexander-Arnold's 1.9 key passes per Premier League game.

This suggests that the 22-year-old wizard could be Klopp's outstanding creative presence in midfield next season, due to his impressive ability to unlock opposition defences on a regular basis.

Goretzka, who has scored 34 goals in 179 matches for Bayern, ranks within the top 1% of his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions over the last 365 days for non-penalty expected goals (xG) accumulated per 90.

This essentially means that the 28-year-old talent excels at finding himself in high-quality positions to find the back of the net, which indicates that he would be perfect for Szoboszlai.

The German international, who teammate Manuel Neuer hailed as "cold as ice", is a goalscoring midfielder who could benefit from his potentially new teammate's superb creativity to provide a significant goal threat from midfield.

His physicality in that position could also allow Szoboszlai to go about his business without worrying about that side of the game. The 6 foot 2 monster won 58% of his Bundesliga duels, including 67% of his aerial battles, last season, whilst the Hungarian star lost 72% of his contests in the air.

Therefore, Goretzka would perfectly complement the former Leipzig maestro in and out of possession as the £35m-rated colossus has the quality to provide the exciting youngster with a target to find within the box in attack whilst also being able to cover for him defensively with immense aerial ability.

West Ham Must Reignite Swoop For ‘Extraordinary’ £32m Star

West Ham must begin the unwanted task of preparing to replace the imperious Declan Rice.

One name who could fill this impending void is Ibrahim Sangare.

What’s the latest on Ibrahim Sangare to West Ham?

According to Get Football News, PSV Eindhoven are willing to let the midfielder leave having attracted interest from several top clubs.

The Dutch side value the player at around €37m (£32m), but a number of clubs are reluctant to pay such a price.

Tottenham, Liverpool and PSG have all been linked with a move in the past, but, the Hammers cannot be ruled out as a viable option for Sangare’s signature, as back in April, he was suggested as a possible replacement for Rice by the Daily Mail.

This followed news that last summer, the Irons were weighing up a £25m move for the Ivorian, but any chance of securing the titan was extinguished when he signed a new deal with the club in that window.

But, with the 2023 Europa Conference League winners set to receive a mammoth fee for their club captain, they could reignite their interest in this 6 foot 3 colossus.

How would Ibrahim Sangare fit in at West Ham?

The 29-cap international has made 133 appearances for PSV, including 45 outings in all competitions this term, whilst notching 11 goal contributions.

This season, across 29 Eredivisie games, the West African has averaged 2.3 tackles, 1.6 clearances, 81% pass accuracy in the opposition half, and 77% of his dribbles, according to Sofascore. Clearly a defensively resolute performer, this is also a player with technical elegance.

He has shown himself to be simply above the level of the Dutch league as he ranks within the top 14% outside of Europe’s top five leagues for aerials won per 90, successful take-ons per 90, progressive passes per 90, and non-penalty goals per 90.

Sangare’s possible arrival could be a further setback from Flynn Downes, who has endured a difficult debut season in East London.

Despite Tomas Soucek’s patchy form, the former Swansea man only began seven top-flight games, but when he has sparingly featured he has largely struggled to show meaningful signs of his quality.

Flynn Downes West Ham

He dismally resides in the lowest 5% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for progressive passes per 90, progressive carries per 90, and successful take-ons per 90.

This has opened the door for Sangare, who has been described as “extraordinary” by former PSV and Ajax manager Aad de Mos.

Due to the pivot’s experience, Sangare has displayed the quality to be a regular starter for the Irons. Indeed, he would evidently be a far better option than Moyes' 2022 signing.

Chelsea In Running To Sign £34m-Rated Man City Star

Chelsea could still launch a move for Aymeric Laporte this summer, with transfer reporter Rudy Galetti stating that the defender remains on the Blues' wanted list.

Is Aymeric Laporte leaving Man City?

The Man City defender did feature for his club during their historic 2022/23 season but not as frequently as he probably would have liked. With the Premier League outfit going on to win the league, FA Cup and Champions League, the centre-back only got onto the field in the top flight on 12 occasions with eleven starts. It's the lowest amount of games he has had yet over the course of his City career.

He still impressed when he was trusted on the field though, ranking in the 99th percentile for attempted passes (86.43 per 90) and progressive carries (2.59 per 90) amongst players in his position in the Men's 'Top Five' big leagues. It shows that his ability hasn't waned and he is still a very capable, ball-playing and offensively driven centre-back.

Man City's Aymeric Laporte

It appears that a stay in England is a real possibility for Laporte now too. That's because reliable journalist Rudy Galletti has revealed that Chelsea are still keeping tabs on the defender and that despite Bayern Munich also holding an interest, he is still very much a wanted man by those at Stamford Bridge.

No official bid or offer has yet been made for the Spaniard though and he adds that the situation is "evolving" in terms of the interest around the player.

What is Laporte's transfer value?

No potential fee has been mentioned in the report but CIES Football Observatory suggest that Laporte's value could be around the 40 million Euro (or £34m) mark. It means that a deal wouldn't break the bank for the Blues and would mean they have another body in their backline.

He could be worth the fee too considering his experience in the game. Not only has he won Premier League titles and a Champions League with Man City, but has been good enough to earn time with Spain too, after changing citizienship from playing for France's youth sides.

To add to his 281 club appearances in the league over the course of his career, the national side have also given him 21 caps in total. It shows the defender's abilities in that he is trusted on the big stage – and a player like him, labelled "incredible" by Pep Guardiola, could really boost the defence at Stamford Bridge.

Musakanda, Mumba among new faces in Zimbabwe's tri-series squad

Zimbabwe have included uncapped Tarisai Musakanda and Carl Mumba in their 16-man ODI squad for the forthcoming tri-series with Sri Lanka and West Indies

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Nov-2016Batsman Tarisai Musakanda and fast bowler Carl Mumba – both uncapped in ODIs – have been included in Zimbabwe’s 16-man squad for the forthcoming home tri-series against Sri Lanka and West Indies. Musakanda and Mumba are among five players who have come into Zimbabwe’s ODI squad after missing the side’s previous ODI assignment, a home series against India in June. The other key names returning to the squad are Brian Chari, Tinashe Panyangara and Chris Mpofu. Both Chari and Mpofu last played an ODI in 2015, while Panyangara was picked after recovering from a back injury that forced him to miss the ODIs against India and the two-Test series against New Zealand.Zimbabwe squad for tri-series

Graeme Cremer (capt), Brian Chari, Tarisai Musakanda, Carl Mumba, Chris Mpofu, Hamilton Masakadza, Chamu Chibhabha, Craig Ervine, Sean Williams, Peter Moor, Donald Tiripano, Tinashe Panyangara, Sikandar Raza, Tendai Chisoro, Elton Chigumbura
In: Brian Chari, Tarisai Musakanda, Carl Mumba, Chris Mpofu, Tinashe Panyangara, Malcolm Waller
Out: Tendai Chatara, Neville Madziva, Timycen Maruma, Wellington Masakadza, Tawanda Mupariwa, Richmond Mutumbami, Taurai Muzarabani, Vusi Sibanda

Chari, an opening batsman, has played just five Tests and four ODIs in his nascent international career. He scored 80 against Sri Lanka in the second Test, which finished the day before the ODI squad was announced. Mumba, who made his international debut in the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka, has taken eight wickets in two Tests at 37.25. Musakanda has not played any international cricket, but has performed consistently in recent outings for Zimbabwe A and Zimbabwe Development XI.Meanwhile, top-order batsman Vusi Sibanda was left out of the squad. Sibanda scored a half-century in the ODIs against India, but was in indifferent form during Zimbabwe A’s List A fixtures against Pakistan A in September-October. Wicketkeeper Richmond Mutumbami has also been omitted, which means Peter Moor will likely be entrusted with the gloves, despite his patchy showing behind the stumps in the Tests against Sri Lanka.Six other players who were part of the ODI squad against India – Tendai Chatara, Neville Madziva, Timycen Maruma, Wellington Masakadza, Tawanda Mupariwa and Taurai Muzarabani – have also been left out.The tri-series starts from November 14, with the first match between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in Harare. The final will be played in Bulawayo on November 27.

Sabbir keeps hopes alive as history beckons

England’s cricketers were facing a test of nerve in the face of a confident, no-regrets run-chase from Bangladesh’s batsmen

The Report by Andrew Miller23-Oct-2016Bangladesh 248 and 253 for 8 (Sabbir 59*, Taijul 11*) need another 33 runs to beat England 293 and 240 (Stokes 85, Bairstow 47, Shakib 5-85)
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBangladesh’s hopes of securing their greatest Test victory were in the hands of their debutant batsman, Sabbir Rahman, and his final two tail-end partners, after an enthralling fourth day at Chittagong finished with three of the four results possible, and history on the cards for Test cricket’s youngest nation. The situation at stumps, after a sensational final session played out in front of a fervent, expectant and ever-growing crowd, was simple. Bangladesh, chasing 286 for victory, were 33 runs short with two wickets remaining and Sabbir standing tall on 59 not out from 93 balls – a supremely gutsy performance from a man who utilised his experience in ODI and T20 cricket to break down the chase into calm and manageable chunks.Alongside him at the close was the redoubtable figure of Taijul Islam, whom Sabbir trusted with the strike as he accepted every single on offer from a deep-set field, and who subverted all conventional tactics in the final over of the day’s play by swiping Gareth Batty for two ambitious lofted strokes down the ground, to reach the close unbeaten on 11 in a ninth-wicket stand of 15.England, by that stage, had earned the right to be considered favourites once again, having cracked the crucial partnership of the innings – Sabbir’s 87-run stand for the sixth wicket with Mushfiqur Rahim – before dispatching two more of Bangladesh’s debutants, Mehedi Hasan and Kamrul Islam Rabbi, with minimum fuss. But, with a notable lack of faith in his trio of spinners (notwithstanding a hard-earned three-wicket haul for Batty) Alastair Cook telegraphed his team’s anxiety throughout a gripping final session. The new ball, due in two overs’ time and such a key weapon throughout this contest, may well be ignored if Ben Stokes and his fellow seamers can locate the sort of reverse swing that derailed Bangladesh’s first innings when play resumes on the final morning. It was a far cry from England’s ambition at the very top of the innings. After being bowled out for 240 in the first 20 minutes of the day, England had made their intentions plain from the outset by handing the new ball to two spinners, Batty and Moeen, for the first time since the Lord’s Test against South Africa in 2008.Both men bowled some unplayable deliveries, but Bangladesh’s attitude was established in a skilful and aggressive 43 from Imrul Kayes, who found a means to counterattack in style, sweeping with intent to disrupt their lengths and pick off his boundaries behind square, while playing with confidence off the back foot in between whiles.Tapping into their recent success in one-day run-chases, Bangladesh were happy to live dangerously in the opening overs – Tamim in particular twice came close to holing out – but their positive mindset sowed some early seeds of doubt in Cook’s mind, as he shed a few close catchers to patrol his boundaries. Nevertheless, England’s patient approach slowly reaped its rewards, and after removing Tamim and Kayes before lunch – the latter caught on the sweep as he attacked Adil Rashid out of the rough – Batty returned with a spring in his step and an extra zip through his action, to grab two lbws in eight balls and put England firmly in command at 108 for 4.Bangladesh’s middle-order, however, contains two of their toughest nuts in Mushfiqur and Shakib Al Hasan, and for the best part of an hour, the pair pushed back against the tide. Mushfiqur produced yet another unflustered display of patience, skill and experience – he has, after all, been playing Test cricket for longer even than Cook, England’s newly crowned most-capped cricketer – while Shakib seemed eager to atone for his wasteful dismissal in the first innings.Bangladesh’s debutant No. 7 Sabbir Rahman celebrates his half-century•AFPA pair of fizzing boundaries off Rashid lifted the spirits of the crowd – a slammed drive through mid-off and a vast bottom-handed swipe over long-on for six – but, on 24, he received the best ball of the innings to date, a perfect ripping offbreak from Moeen that he couldn’t help but nick to the keeper.Enter Sabbir, with the chase in the balance at 140 for 5. His performance featured two distinct tempos – firstly, when he arrived at the crease in the 41st over, Sabbir’s one-day instincts were to go for his shots, and with two big sixes and a four in his first 25 runs before tea, he gave a nervous crowd plenty reasons to cheer as their numbers and belief mounted with every stroke. After tea, however, he was sufficiently confident to retreat back into his shell without losing any of his intent. England resumed the final session with 107 runs to defend and, with the ball exactly 50 overs old, Cook’s instinct was to revert to the familiarity of his seamers – Stokes from one end, Chris Woakes from the other – with Rashid’s legspin thrown into the equation after half an hour of attrition in a bid to buy a breakthrough.Stuart Broad, who had bowled a total of four overs in the first two sessions, joined the fray with a tight angled line into the off stump. But with the reverse-swing of the first innings proving hard to replicate, Mushfiqur and Sabbir had no reason to rush their approach. With caution on the front foot and an eye for the occasional flick off the pads, the pair ground down the requirement on a ball-by-ball basis, embracing the need to take the match into the fifth day if required, in spite of the mounting excitement in the stands. On 34, Sabbir had the moment of good fortune that most players need in such tense scenarios, when Jonny Bairstow – whose glovework had been impressive for much of the match – failed to gather a thin leg-side tickle as Broad strayed onto the pads. It was a tough opportunity, but the sort that needed to be taken, and England’s frustrations mounted after the drinks break when Broad’s second over of the restart was taken for two boundaries, Bangladesh’s first for 19 overs. A short ball was gleefully pounded in front of square by Mushfiqur, before Broad fizzed a yorker out of the footholes and away for four byes.Cook had no option but to revert back to his spinners, and the situation looked ominous when Batty’s second delivery was paddle-swept through fine leg for four by Sabbir. But, before the over was out, Batty had made the critical breakthrough, bursting a leaping offbreak through the top of the pitch and into Mushfiqur’s glove, for Ballance to snaffle at leg slip. The breakthrough had come with 59 runs still required, but if Sabbir had any doubts about the task now in his hands alone, he banished them in style, drilling Batty out of the rough through long-off to bring up his maiden half-century from 76 balls. But Sabbir couldn’t bat at both ends at once, and two of his fellow debutants came and went with minimal resistance. Mehedi was pinned on the crease by a nipbacker from Broad for 1, before Rabbi endured a three-ball stay that was as brief as it was eventful – he might have been run out and bowled in the space of two deliveries, before Broad delivered him a pair on debut courtesy of another important grab from Ballance at short leg. With the light fading and 48 runs the requirement, Sabbir declined the temptation to farm the strike and regularly helped himself to a single off the first ball to expose his partner, Taijul. The tactic kept England frustrated to the close, with Broad completing a valiant nine-over spell that went for 12 runs in total, although Taijul was lucky to survive on 3 when a thick edge from Batty fizzed through the cordon at a catchable height. Cook’s refusal to bowl spin from both ends spoke volumes as the umpires called off the chase in the twilight.Win, lose or tie, this has been a contest to savour, on a surface that deserves huge praise for offering a distinctly subcontinental challenge without descending into a puff-of-dust farce. And whatever the outcome, Bangladesh have played their part and more in the most compelling Test match in this country since Australia’s terrific scare at Fatullah in 2006. On Monday, within an hour of the resumption, Sabbir could have made himself a national hero.

Man United May Loan £190k-p/w Ace To Facilitate Transfer

Insider Dean Jones has claimed that Manchester United may loan Harry Maguire to allow for the arrival of Kim Min-jae.

What's the latest on Man United, Kim Min-jae and Harry Maguire?

There is a strong belief that the Red Devils will be looking to upgrade their defensive options in the summer window.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg has stated on Twitter that a central defender is a priority for Man Utd alongside bringing in a new striker too.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via Goal), Napoli's Kim is a big target and could be signed for just £42m in July thanks to his release clause.

While speaking about that rumour on the latest episode of the Chasing Green Arrows podcast, Jones stated that the interest was genuine and claimed that Maguire could be sent on loan to make way for the new defender.

On the links with Kim, he said: "I think there's more substance to this. I think there's definitely something in this. He's obviously got this clause that kicks in – I think it's only a 10-day window that it's live for at the start of July – where it's available for 50 million.

“I mean, they would be stupid if they weren't looking at an opportunity like that to be quite frank. And if the player's keen to get to the Premier League, they've got as good a chance as anybody

"What an unbelievable opportunity to upgrade that defence.

He continued: "Still got to move on Harry Maguire, they've got to figure out a situation around that because you can't have all of these defenders on the payroll.

"There might even be the case, I think, that Harry Maguire ends up going on loan for next season. It wouldn't surprise me if they had to do that, just to shift him on and open up some space in the squad."

How much does Maguire get paid?

It seems quite likely that Maguire could be offloaded this summer. After all, he's not featured that regularly under Erik ten Hag, with just seven starts in the league this term.

There has been talk of a £50m sale this summer but teams might not be willing to pay so much for the Englishman – especially as his wages are so high at £190k-p/w.

Harry-Maguire-in-action-for-Manchester-United

A loan, however, would mean Maguire's potential new side wouldn't have to worry about a transfer fee, making his wages more affordable.

And so, this could be the easiest way for United to offload an unwanted player and consequently make space in the squad for someone new like Kim.
