'Every squad member should expect to play a World Cup role' – Eoin Morgan

Eoin Morgan has confessed that he is still not sure who will make England’s final World Cup squad.Morgan, the England captain, and his fellow selectors, Ed Smith and Trevor Bayliss, will meet on Monday to finalise the 15-man squad. They plan to announce it at 9.30am on Tuesday morning. With England having beaten Pakistan 4-0 to secure an unbeaten run of 11 ODI series (of more than one match) in succession, Morgan feels he has an embarrassment of riches available to him among the 16-men used against Pakistan and described the final decision as “extremely difficult”.But while Morgan knows there will some hugely disappointed players on Tuesday morning, he has urged them to take pride in their achievements in recent years and to remain prepared in the expectation that illness or injury could grant them a reprieve in the coming weeks. England will go into the World Cup as the No. 1-ranked side, having improved immensely over the four-year cycle since the debacle of their previous World Cup appearance in Australia and New Zealand.”I don’t know the 15,” Morgan told Sky Sports after the game in Leeds. “Every one of these guys should be proud of what we’ve achieved so far. The continuous improvement of performances makes the selection meeting extremely difficult.”But every single member of the 17-man squad here will play some role, due to the nature of injuries and illness and call-ups.”While Chris Woakes, who claimed a five-wicket haul in Leeds, has surely done enough to guarantee his own selection, he admitted he would be nervously awaiting a confirmation.ALSO READ: Dobell: The final contenders for England’s World Cup 15“Everyone will be wary of that phone call,” he said. “Even if you feel like you’ve got a good chance to being in the squad, until you hear it from selectors’ mouths, it’s not quite set in stone. You’re still probably a little bit on edge, particularly with these 16 and 17 players, because everyone has performed at some point. It’s a tricky decision for the selectors. Everyone will be looking at their phones tomorrow I suppose, if that’s when we find out.”Woakes, who revealed his post-wicket celebration was a tongue-in-cheek homage to Sir Ian Botham’s celebrations during the 1992 World Cup, also accepted, however, that the competition for places has “driven everyone forward”.”It’s certainly driven everyone forward to try and improve,” he said. “And to make sure you’re on top of your game. Whenever you get the opportunity to bowl in practice, or bat or field, you constantly feel, not like you’re on audition, but like it’s an opportunity to show your skills. It’s certainly driven everyone to try and improve and it’s certainly showed in our performances over the series.””The series went as well as we could have hoped,” Morgan agreed. “Pakistan are a strong side and they played some competitive cricket. We’ve chopped and changed our side a lot but the performance has never been compromised. That emphasises how competitive positions are as well as everyone’s hunger and determination to constantly improve their games.”

Passion or provocation: did Kohli mock Ashwin?

When asked what was going on, Ashwin’s response was: “I just play with passion, so does he”

We just play with passion – Ashwin on Kohli send-off

Did Virat Kohli mock R Ashwin’s controversial mankading of Jos Buttler earlier in the season after he caught his Test team-mate at the long-on boundary? Paul Collingwood, former England captain and a staunch critic of the Buttler run-out, certainly thought so.With 27 required off the last over against Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kings XI Punjab captain Ashwin hit the first ball for a six. The next only made it as far as Kohli at the long-on boundary. Kohli gesticulated after catching the ball before moving his right hand – which held the ball – behind his body, an action not too dissimilar to flicking the bails off behind you when you effect the mankad.Virat Kohli is over the moon as a Kings XI Punjab wicket falls•BCCI

Ashwin walked off, and proceeded to fling his gloves in anger upon reaching the dugout, which may or may not have been a reaction to Kohli’s antics. He was later asked about what had been going on between him and Kohli – Ashwin has been animated whenever his side has got Kohli out – and replied, “I just play with passion, so does he. That’s it. As simple as that.”No current India cricketer has openly come out in support of Ashwin – or made any comment one way or another – on the run-out debate, whereas current England cricketers – and others – have taken to Twitter to criticise him. The support for Ashwin has only come from former Indian cricketers.Ashwin did pull out of his delivery during his match against Delhi Capitals with Shikhar Dhawan, the non-striker, not leaving the crease. When Ashwin ran in to bowl the next ball, Dhawan danced outside the crease but with the bat inside it. Kohli reacted similarly when Sunil Narine pulled out of his delivery stride in another match, but that wasn’t with the intention of running the non-striker out. Kohli squatted low to send the message that he was doing all he could to keep his bat inside the crease.

Alastair Cook has scored an unbeaten 150 in his first innings in England since retiring from Test cricket, playing for Essex in a pre-season game against Cambridge University. It was 34-year-old former England captain Cook’s first outing at home since he received a knighthood in the Queen’s New Year Honours list and his 64th first-class ton.Cook retired last September with a knock of 147 against India at The Oval, after 161 Test appearances and 12,472 runs, both England records. He took to the Cambridge attack with authority, bringing up his fifty before lunch on the opening day of the three-day game with the ninth boundary of his innings, having faced 106 balls. He reached his hundred before tea off 200 deliveries and finished with 150 off 248 balls, including 21 fours.Cook shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 217 with Adam Wheater before Wheater was dismissed for 130. Cook gave Luke Chapman a tough caught-and-bowled chance en route to his century, but otherwise played flawlessly, and both batsmen reached their tons in the same Josh Cantrell over which yielded 19 runs.Essex declared on 387 for 5. They open their 2019 County Championship season at Hampshire on 5 April.

Maxwell fumes at 'extraordinary decision' over Dunk dismissal

Cameron Bancroft asked the umpires to check the catch and they gave the soft signal as out despite the fielder indicating he didn’t think the ball carried

Melbourne Stars captain Glenn Maxwell has labelled Ben Dunk’s controversial dismissal in Sunday night’s clash with the Perth Scorchers “an extraordinary decision”, as yet another BBL match was marred by an umpiring controversy.Dunk was given out caught early in the chase when he mistimed a pull shot to Nick Hobson at square leg who had to dive forward as the ball dipped on him. The ball nestled in Hobson’s hands but he immediately signaled to everyone on the field that he felt the ball didn’t carry and bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile agreed without reacting and walked straight back to his mark.Scorchers keeper Cameron Bancroft, with a good sight of it from behind the stumps, asked if the umpires could check upstairs. Umpires Nathan Johnstone and Gerard Abood convened and sent the decision upstairs to the third umpire Simon Lightbody and significantly gave the on-field ‘soft signal’ as out.The TV evidence was inconclusive and the third umpire was unable to overturn the on-field decision as a result. Maxwell, Dunk and the Stars were left bemused by the sequence of events.”It looked to me that the bowler and fielder said that it didn’t carry and then everyone went back to their positions, and Bancroft asked for it to be looked at,” Maxwell said post-match. “Somehow the umpire has come up with, [the decision] that’s out. It’s an extraordinary decision in the end. But that’s history.”From our point of view, it was pretty disappointing. The fielder says he doesn’t catch it and the bowler accepts that and walks back to his mark and somehow, it’s been given out on field.”Judging by the evidence given to them I would have just thought the umpires would have said the ‘soft signal’ was not out. If there was evidence that it was out then I’m fine with the decision being overturned. But the cameras looked a bit blurry and as soon as you don’t have the right evidence to overturn it, unfortunately it’s going to stick with umpire’s call. We’ll have to live with that.”It was the second controversial umpiring decision involving the Perth Scorchers at Perth Stadium this season. Scorchers batsman Michael Klinger was dismissed off the seventh ball of an over against the Sydney Sixers after the umpires incorrectly allowed an extra delivery. The decision did not affect the outcome of the game. The Heat were also left to bemoan two incorrect lbw decisions in their successful chase against the Adelaide Strikers on Sunday night when both Max Bryant and Brendon McCullum were given out. There is no DRS in the BBL but TV broadcaster Fox Sports did have ball-tracking and used it for replays of both decisions. Bryant’s was clearly missing leg stump by some margin while McCullum was hit well outside the line of off stump, but the decisions did not affect the outcome of the match with the Heat winning comfortably.Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat also shared the points in another controversial incident after a power failure at the Gabba ended the match early in the chase. The Thunder appealed the no result decision from the match officials after it was deemed conditions were unsuitable to continue. Cricket Australia dismissed the appeal after finding that the correct protocols had been followed by the match officials in calling the game off.

No rest for James Anderson as he seeks satisfaction in Sri Lanka 'challenge'

James Anderson has admitted he feels he “hasn’t quite cracked” the challenge of bowling with the Kookaburra ball.Despite recently overtaking Glenn McGrath to become the most prolific seam bowler in the history of Test cricket, Anderson accepts that his record at home – where he has claimed 368 Test wickets as a cost of 23.76 apiece – is far better than his record away (196 wickets at 32.62). One of the reasons for that home success is the use of the Duke’s ball, which swings for longer than the Kookaburra and other varieties, in England’s home Tests.Partly as a result of that, Anderson had no hesitation in declining the opportunity of skipping the tour of Sri Lanka. While he knows there may be some tough days ahead, he said he gains more satisfaction from “a good day here” than when “bowling on a green seamer in England in April”.There had been talk ahead of the tour that either Anderson or Stuart Broad, perhaps even both of them, could be rested in order to protect them in light of the challenges ahead – notably an Ashes series in England in 2019 – and to take a look at their possible successors.Anderson also acknowledged that, aged 36, he may not have many more opportunities for such tours and that with his white-ball career behind him – at international level, at least – the workload expected of him and Broad was far more manageable.”There was a question asked if I was keen to go on tour in the winter and I said, ‘Yes’,” Anderson said. “And that was pretty much the end of it.”The amount of cricket I play at the moment – and Stuart Broad would say the same for himself – means there’s no reason why we can’t be fit for all the Test cricket. We don’t play any white-ball cricket and there are plenty of gaps in between Test series for us to rest and recuperate and get fit for the next one.”It may be my last trip to Sri Lanka – or my penultimate one, anyway [England return in early 2020] – it’s a great place to tour and I’m going to enjoy it while I can.”It is a huge challenge for seam bowlers out here, but when you have a good day here you get more satisfaction than bowling on a green seamer in England in April. When you’re dripping with sweat, covered in mud, you know you’ve had a hard day, I think you get more out of that. You’ve put in the hard yards for the team.Stuart Broad and James Anderson could be rotated during the Test series•Getty Images

“The surfaces are very dry and the two we have played on this week have been really flat, too. So it’s a challenge. And the different challenges the Kookaburra ball brings are something I feel I haven’t quite cracked. That’s something for me to keep trying to work on.”Anderson also pointed out that he and Broad were the only two members of the England squad to have been part of a Test tour of Sri Lanka and suggested, with three spinners expected to play in Galle, the workloads for seamers should mitigate against any need to rotate them during the series. He did concede, however, that one or other of them may have to accept missing out in a Test or two.”You can’t go into a game thinking the spinners are going to do everything,” he said. “When we won in India [in 2012] the seamers still had a big role. We have to use that new ball – it will swing for the first 10 overs or so – so we have to make their batsmen play as much as possible.”Stuart and I are the only ones who have made a Test tour here before. So it’s down to us to pass on as much information as we can.”In terms of selection, you have to go with the conditions. On present history, we think it’s going to spin. There will probably be some tough decisions to make. Stuart and I are well aware of that. It’s international sport and you have to take it on the chin if you’re not selected.”But we want to keep improving as a team and to win. I don’t see the workloads being too much, so we’ll try and play our strongest XI every game.”It would be huge, a really big achievement to win here.”

Man Utd could replicate Evra masterclass by signing "obscene" £26m target

Manchester United are reportedly in good stead to welcome some much-needed reinforcements, thanks to the impending arrival of new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

It’s speculated that the incoming businessman will have a significant say in what transfer movements the Red Devils could make in the future, with an additional eye that could assist Erik ten Hag in improving his underperforming squad.

The Dutchman’s side currently sit five points outside of the Premier League top four and have claimed bottom of the group in the Champions League with only two fixtures remaining, making for worrying times at Old Trafford.

From lack of cohesion in the squad to a dip in individual performance, United are in dire need of some inspiration to avoid dropping down the table throughout the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign, with the January window posing as a great opportunity for improvement.

Man Utd transfer targets – Double Monaco swoop

Reports in France, relayed by TEAMtalk, claim that one of Ratcliffe’s first pieces of business could be to poach two of Monaco’s star talents to better the squad at Old Trafford.

The report claims that a €60m (£52m) double swoop could be orchestrated, with one name eyed by the Red Devils said to be midfield dynamo Youssouf Fofana.

It’s claimed that the 24-year-old, who ranks in the top 7% of midfielders in Europe’s elite for his rate of 1.75 interceptions per 90, is admired in Manchester, with the belief that the Frenchman could be acquired for around €30m (£26m).

Fofana isn’t the only player speculated to be targeted by United, however, with Monaco’s prized right-back, Vanderson, said to be the other €30m (£26m) asset wanted in Ten Hag’s side.

The report claims that the Brazilian is a player that has been on the Premier League outfit’s radar before, however the desired double swoop could resonate the first concrete approach for the dynamic defender.

Players that Man Utd have signed from Monaco

While the idea of capturing two of Monaco’s talents remains as speculation at present, the inspiration could be there for United to hire from the Ligue 1 outfit based on their past experiences in dealing with the club.

You’d have to travel back to 2015 to witness the last time that United purchased a player from Monaco, with Anthony Martial arriving for £36m as a 19-year-old after impressing in France.

Since his arrival, the forward has netted 89 goals for the Red Devils while combating various injuries and lack of game time, with him providing some magical moments at Old Trafford over the years.

Perhaps the most notable name signed from Monaco is Patrice Evra, who was captured in January 2006 by Sir Alex Ferguson, and went on to make 379 appearances for the club and be an integral part of the defence.

The left-back won five Premier League titles in Manchester, as well as winning the Champions League to write himself into history as one of the most successful full-backs to represent the club.

In signing Vanderson, United could roll back the years by replicating the nature of the deal to capture the Frenchman, by signing the full-back in January from Monaco.

Vanderson’s playing style

Deployed at right-back, the 22-year-old has made waves in France following his move from Gremio in January 2022.

A product of Gremio’s academy, Vanderson was praised by talent scout Jacek Kulig in the summer of 2021, where he was described as a “complete full-back”, with his “work rate” and “athleticism” raised among his greatest strengths.

In a more updated report, U23 scout Antonio Mango waxed lyrical over the Brazil international, supporting Kulig’s evaluation of singling out the defender’s athleticism and work rate.

Lauded as having an “obscene” level of pace and acceleration, Mango described the 2001-born gem as a “modern-day full-back” for his power and tireless energy to move up and down the flank as both a defensive and offensive support to his team.

Despite being “renowned for his offensive prowess”, the Brazilian has the rounded ability to defend as effectively as he gets forward, reinforced by his average of 3.34 tackles per 90, a decimal that places him in the top 2% of full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues, via FBref.

Since joining Monaco, Vanderson has recorded 13 goal contributions in 68 appearances, signifying his ability to make a difference in the final third, with his average of 1.25 key passes per 90 also portraying his offensive assets.

A right-back with the ability to assume the advancing wing-back role could be a fundamental capture at Old Trafford, with Ten Hag’s options in defence prevailing to be worryingly thin.

Why Vanderson would be a good signing for Man Utd

At right-back, the manager’s options span as far as Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot, with little depth of first-team calibre to cover for the inevitability of injury and dip in form.

In signing Vanderson, Ten Hag could add another competent right-back to his ranks, with the in-demand ace showing a higher level of performance than the United duo based on his statistics over the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season.

As portrayed in the table above, the Brazilian exceeds both Dalot and Wan-Bissaka in a host of attributes identifiable to the playing style of a full-back, suggesting that the Gremio academy product could hand Ten Hag an upgrade in defence.

Monaco's Vanderson

With only two options at right-back available, and the Englishman only just returning from injury, it’s imperative that United learn from their lack of depth in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign and hire a defender of the calibre of Vanderson in January.

Only time will tell if the Red Devils pursue their full-back target, however in capturing his signature, Ten Hag could repeat history in welcoming a top-level defender from Monaco in January, with Evra paving the way for future success back in 2006.

We knew the fixtures were tough in terms of the travelling, but do I set targets for this month? No, we're just purely concentrating on the next game.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

That next game is a trip to Morecambe on Saturday, with the Shrimps having plenty to play for themselves as they take aim at a play-off berth. Parkinson added on the importance of a meeting with fellow promotion hopefuls: “Every game is of equal importance especially when you get to this stage of the season. We're looking to take the qualities from the weekend, improve on areas as well, that's what we'll be talking with the lads in training tomorrow going into the game.
