Messi named 114-cap star as England's "greatest ever player" ahead of Rooney

Lionel Messi made a bold claim when talking about the best player England have ever produced, naming a 114-cap star as the “greatest”, ahead of Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane and a storied list of strikers.

Messi continues to light up the global game

The great Argentine may now be 38 years of age but he’s continuing to perform remarkably well, standing the test of time compared to some of his peers.

He scored twice during Inter Miami’s recent 4-0 victory over Atalanta United in MLS, taking his tally across his last ten outings to nine goals and seven assists. He notably picked up a hat-trick of assists during their 4-1 win over New England Revolution at the beginning of October.

He also starred for Argentina in October’s international break. Although he did not score, Argentina defeated Puerto Rico 6-0.

The Inter Miami star is yet to decide whether he will go to the 2026 World Cup, but if he is able to do so, Argentina should be in a strong position to go all the way once again, having blitzed their way through qualification.

England, on the other hand, officially qualified for the tournament in America with a 5-0 win over Latvia. The Three Lions will be hoping 2026 is finally the year when football ‘comes home’, but talisman Harry Kane will need to be at his best.

England have a great recent record of producing top strikers, with Rooney scoring 53 goals in 120 international appearances, but Messi has suggested a different Liverpool-born player is the best-ever.

Four England stars Thomas Tuchel could rescue after Southgate struggles

The former Chelsea boss isn’t afraid to make some bold choices…

ByTom Cunningham Sep 7, 2025

Speaking after Steven Gerrard’s retirement in 2016, Messi picked Gerrard as England’s greatest player of all time.

Gerrard without doubt among England's best-ever players

It is arguably a bold claim to suggest Gerrard is the Three Lions’ greatest-ever player, but he is certainly in the conversation, given the instrumental role the 114-cap star played in Liverpool competing for major honours until the mid 2010s.

Of course, it will probably haunt the 45-year-old that he never managed to win the Premier League title, but the former Liverpool captain certainly wasn’t unsuccessful, winning 11 trophies during his time with his boyhood club, including the FA Cup in 2006.

Most famously, the Whiston-born midfielder instigated the comeback in arguably the greatest final in Champions League history, with the Reds coming from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties in 2005.

Not only did the Liverpool legend always step up when required, scoring a number of crucial goals in finals, but he has also received praise for the impact he had on his teammates, with Gerard Houllier once saying: “He is a natural born leader, a very inspirational leader. He is somebody you want to follow.”

Tottenham expected to seal two January signings as ENIC send message after takeover bid

Tottenham Hotspur were the subject of serious takeover interest from a 12-man US consortium led by tech entrepreneur, Brooklyn Earick, earlier this week — who made a record-breaking £4.5 billion offer to buy the club.

ENIC responds to Earick's £4.5 billion Tottenham takeover bid

The news was first reported by chief sports correspondent Martin Lipton, with former DJ Earick registering his firm interest in acquiring Tottenham’s majority shares currently held by ENIC.

This development comes as the latest Spurs ownership twist following the major news that ex-chair Daniel Levy stepped down from his post after nearly 25 years, with the Lewis family ushering in a new era beyond the Lilywhites’ divisive former chief.

CEO Vinai Vinkatesham and members of the Lewis family have taken a more prominent role in the running of Tottenham since Levy’s exit, but outside investors have seen this board reshuffle as an opportunity to upset the applecart.

ENIC, following two previous takeover approaches from Amanda Staveley’s PCP International Finance Limited and Firehawk Holdings Limited, made clear that they had no interest in selling Tottenham on September 8 (BBC).

Now, following the approach from Earick, ENIC have moved to “reconfirm” that the club is indeed not for sale.

Despite the alleged money on offer from Earick, reliable reports suggest that ENIC have big plans for Tottenham, and could pump more money into the club.

This cash may well be reinvested in transfers or bringing Spurs in line with the Premier League’s best wage-payers (Kaveh Solhekol), with a report from TEAMtalk now revealing their recruitment strategy for the winter amid Thomas Frank’s exceptional start to 2025/2026.

Tottenham expected to seal two January signings for Thomas Frank

According to the outlet and journalist Dean Jones, Tottenham are expected to seal two signings in January.

The defensive area will likely be reinforced, specifically centre-back, with Radu Dragusin still recovering from a lengthy injury lay-off. Injuries to Micky van de Ven or Cristian Romero, who have both been a key part of Frank’s brilliant tenure so far, would be disastrous.

Kevin Danso was brought in as a back-up option, but there is a case to be made they need another body in that area. This was made all the more prevalent by Joao Palhinha playing at centre-back against Doncaster Rovers in midweek, with Tottenham making a summer approach for Manuel Akanji that ultimately didn’t go anywhere.

Spurs also had two bids rejected for Savinho, who is closing in on a new deal with Man City, so a move for the Brazilian now appears off for the foreseeable future.

In any case, Frank’s side are tipped to go back into the winger market mid-season, and supporters are waiting for ENIC’s first transfer window post-Levy with serious anticipation.

While Spurs are viewed by outside investors as a club that is “purchasable” (BBC), the Lewis family appear to be serious about their long-term stay in N17.

Forget Kudus & Simons: Spurs star is becoming a "superstar" under Frank

Tottenham Hotspur’s qualification for the Champions League at the end of the 2024/25 campaign was a superb achievement, handing the fanbase a reason to be positive after a dismal season.

Playing up against some of Europe’s elite will hand a generation of supporters memories to last a lifetime – not to mention the financial benefits to the football club.

Such funds have allowed the board to back Thomas Frank in the transfer market, subsequently landing the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons in recent months.

The duo cost upwards of £100m during the recent window, but will inject needed quality and talent into the frontline in the Lilywhites’ hopes of building on their Europa League triumph.

Both players made their European debuts for Frank’s side in last night’s clash against Villarreal, but how did they fare in the 1-0 triumph on home soil?

Simons & Kudus’ performances against Villarreal

Dutch international Simons started his second game for Spurs last night, but doing so once again in a slightly unnatural left-sided midfield role – rather than his preferred number ten position.

However, he still managed to produce some admirable numbers, completing three passes into the final third and completing two out of the three long balls he attempted.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The 22-year-old also managed to make three interceptions and made three recoveries out of possession – showcasing the impact he had at both ends of the pitch.

As for Kudus, he continues to go from strength to strength for the Lilywhites, producing yet another impressive performance against the LaLiga side in North London.

The Ghanaian international completed two successful take-ons, along with a 50% cross completion rate, arguably being the side’s most potent threat throughout the encounter.

He further managed to impress by completing 86% of the passes he attempted, but like Simons, also offered a workman-like display out of possession, making six ball recoveries.

Despite the showings of the aforementioned duo, one other first-team member managed to trump them both and produce a first Champions League appearance to remember in the triumph.

The Spurs star who’s becoming Frank’s best player

Spurs’ recruitment over the last couple of years has been sensational – as seen by the recent displays produced by big-money additions Kudus and Simons.

However, the groundwork has been laid in years gone by, even making stellar additions even before Frank took the reins from now Nottingham
Forest boss Ange Postecoglou.

Such additions allowed the Aussie to claim European glory last time around, with Frank hoping to achieve similar success in the near future, given the talent at his disposal.

Not all of the signings made have had to result in huge sums being spent, as demonstrated by the bargain £8.5m deal to land Lucas Bergvall from Djurgarden last summer.

The 19-year-old may still be working his way into the spotlight, given his tender age, but he’s already become a crucial cog within the Lilywhites’ first-team over recent months.

He’s already racked up over 50 senior appearances for the North London outfit, with last night one of his most impressive showings since his move from Sweden.

The teenager started at the heart of the side last night, arguably being the most impressive talent within Frank’s side as they kick-started their Champions League campaign.

Bergvall, who was labelled as a “superstar” by Spurs writer Mitch Fretton, featured for 89 minutes, making 80% of the passes he attempted, whilst also completing 50% of his dribbles.

Such numbers highlight the threat he posed with the ball at his feet, not to mention the ball he whipped into the box that was fumbled by Luiz Junior, which resulted in the only goal of the game.

The Swede also made one block and one recovery, offering an excellent box-to-box option at the heart of Frank’s side during the European triumph in North London.

As a result of his display, Bergvall was handed an 8/10 match rating by the Daily Express’ Jack McEachen, whilst also claiming the Man of the Match award – further highlighting his superb display against the Yellow Submarine.

Such a display has made him a key component of Frank’s first-team squad, with the sky truly being the limit for the sensational teenage talent.

If he can continue on his current development path, there’s no reason as to why he can’t be one of the first names on the teamsheet – potentially offering a better addition than big-money signings, Kudus and Simons.

Cristiano Ronaldo's bold new haircut! CR7 shows off fresh buzzcut look as Portuguese GOAT gears up for return with Al-Nassr

Cristiano Ronaldo shared a bold new haircut as he showed off his shaved head as he returned to Al-Nassr training in Riyadh this week. The 40-year-old superstar looked every inch the warrior he is with his new look while going through the hard yards on the training pitch. Known for making regular tweaks to his hairstyle down the years, CR7 will hope this latest iteration helps him to deliver yet more success.

  • Chasing World Cup glory at 40

Ronaldo continues to smash records and defy logic at the age of 40. The Portuguese icon endured a mixed week on international duty as he missed a penalty in Portugal’s narrow 1–0 win over Ireland, before roaring back with two goals in a 2–2 draw against Hungary. With his 22nd-minute equalizer, Ronaldo broke Carlos Ruiz's record as the top World Cup qualifying scorer with 40 strikes, before adding a second to take his tally to 41 on the stroke of half-time. He now has a staggering 143 international goals and a combined total for club and country of 947 strikes. Each time he is on the pitch another record seems to fall and his appetite does not appear to be in decline.

  • A look that screams ruthless ambition

When Ronaldo arrived back in Saudi Arabia this week, it was his appearance that caught the eye. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner showcased his freshly shaved head on Instagram, rocking a military-style buzzcut that will have reminded many of his Juventus stint in 2020. Ronaldo's hairstyles have been as legendary as his goals over the years. From the boyish ringlets of his early Sporting CP career to the frosted tips and spiky mullet he donned during his Manchester United breakthrough, his fashion evolution has always tracked his career journey. By the mid-2000s, when he started to take over English football, his hair became shorter, spikier, and more angular – a reflection of the ruthless, no-frills forward he was turning into. In 2017, while still at Real Madrid, Ronaldo went back to the old, longer curls with blonde tips. Who will ever forget the Champions League final against Juventus in Cardiff? The noodle-haired assassin scored a brace past Gianluigi Buffon to inspire Real Madrid to a 4-1 victory.

  • The richest player on the planet

Beyond his records, Ronaldo’s financial empire remains unmatched. His current deal with Al-Nassr is reportedly worth a staggering $280 million (£209m) per season, cementing his status as the highest-paid footballer in the world. Moreover, the CR7 brand has become a global commercial behemoth as it has ventured into several sectors, including fragrances, hotels, and fitness. Every move he makes, every haircut, and every Instagram post he shares generate headlines and, more importantly, revenue for his ever-increasing business empire.

Despite the riches of Saudi Arabia, there have been talks about a possible third stint at United, the club that turned him from a raw teenager into a footballing legend. Reports have suggested that Ronaldo remains open to the idea of returning in some capacity after retirement, potentially taking on a directorial or ambassadorial role. Speaking toGOAL, former United defender Danny Simpson even hinted that such a reunion “shouldn’t be ruled out,” saying that Ronaldo’s emotional ties to Old Trafford run too deep to ignore.

"I wouldn’t say no," he said. "If you look at his mentality, he obviously cares about the club. I think he would say that because he would like to come back again but in another way. I don’t think he liked the way he left so he’d like to come back and make United great again, on some kind of level making decisions.

"The business side is obviously very different, but he’s also a businessman. You can’t knock that team he’s got around him. I’d love him to because I think he’s got a lot to offer, even on that side of the game going forward. Just his mentality and everything he does, he achieves it. That’s what United need."

His time at United delivered the first Champions League trophy and Ballon d’Or of his glittering career. Though his second stint ended in controversy after a public fallout with ex-boss Erik ten Hag and contract termination, a third stint, this time in the boardroom, might bring back the glory days at Old Trafford.

    All eyes on Al-Nassr

Ronaldo will lead the line once again when Al-Nassr face Al-Fateh this weekend, intending to keep their title push alive. They have got off to a perfect start in the Saudi Pro League, winning the first four league fixtures, and the Portuguese icon will look to build on that early momentum.

Farke can solve James blow by unleashing Leeds star who's the new Raphinha

Compared to some in the division, Leeds United are yet to be completely ravaged by injuries so far this season. That said, they have suffered from some absences here and there.

Lucas Perri has been out of Daniel Farke’s plans since featuring against Newcastle United through injury, but this setback hasn’t derailed the Whites too much, with Karl Darlow taking over in goal, resulting in a win and a draw being clinched.

Moreover, Jayden Bogle has managed to wriggle free of any injury difficulties – with Farke worrying he might have missed the AFC Bournemouth draw – only for the former Sheffield United man to win seven ground duels versus their Premier League foes.

Leeds are well equipped to deal with injury struggles; therefore, with Daniel James, another injury-prone figure, now taking up room in the Elland Road treatment room.

The latest on Dan James' injury setback

It’s well-known by this point that the Welshman has routinely looked out of his depth in the Premier League, whether that be with Leeds or at other clubs.

Glancing at his numbers in the top-flight, and then comparing them to his Championship statistics, it’s really night and day between the two of them.

Once labelled an “exceptional” talent by ex-Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he has struggled to ever look Premier League-ready.

Indeed, in the EFL’s elite division to date, the 27-year-old attacker has a bumper 29 goals and 25 assists next to his name, notably finding his way into the PFA Team of the Season for 2024/25.

On the contrary, in the league above, it’s just 12 goals and 13 assists to shout about, with his sketchy injury record also a major cause for concern for the number seven when it comes to regular minutes this season.

Worries emerged earlier this week that the winger had suffered an ACL injury and while the full extent of his recently obtained ankle injury is yet to be fully revealed, it is alleged that he could only miss up to six weeks of action, having also sat out a total of ten games last campaign during Leeds’ promotion hunt due to a hamstring issue.

Despite the Welshman sliding down the pecking order somewhat, he will still be fondly remembered for his key role last season as promotion was achieved, despite said setbacks.

Yet, it’s clear now, from Leeds’ summer business, that upgrades have been purchased all over the pitch to help the top-flight newcomers adjust to the testing Premier League, with one signing already looking a better talent than James at the elite level.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The "electric" star who is better than James

Both of Leeds’ early wins in the Premier League this season have been picked up courtesy of a whole host of Farke’s new purchases shining bright.

On the opening day, it was Lukas Nmecha – who joined from Wolfsburg this summer – who stole the headlines when converting a late penalty to hand his new employers a 1-0 win over Everton.

Then, it was the turn of Noah Okafor, who would seal a convincing 3-1 victory on the road against Wolverhampton Wanderers, after leaving AC Milan behind for England late into the hectic transfer window.

Unlike James, who relocated to Elland Road nervously after a stop-start time at the Red Devils, Okafor has arrived in England with his confidence full to the brim.

Indeed, he caused defences in the Austrian Bundesliga, Serie A, and the Swiss Super League all sorts of bother, before another top-flight adventure opened up for him.

Amazingly, playing for the likes of RB Salzburg, Milan, and Basel, Okafor notched up a blistering 81 goal contributions, which blows James’ own lacklustre numbers in the Premier League – another tough top-flight division in Europe – out of the water.

Consequently, Leeds might no longer feel a need to persist with James, even with the knowledge that he can bamboozle defences with his pace and skill on his day, when they have a similar winger who is proven at the very top in their fresh number 19.

It’s safe to say that the Swiss is also bamboozling defences in England, evoking memories of a tricky Raphinha when he once plied his trade at Elland Road. Indeed, to rubber-stamp that comparison, Okafor notably made a ridiculous 12 dribbles in the opening 45 minutes of that game with Wolves, the most by any player in the first half of a Premier League game since Boxing Day 2019, when Wilfried Zaha achieved 13 vs West Ham.

James will, no doubt, be given his moment in the Premier League spotlight again when he wriggles free of his latest injury setback.

But, with faces such as the “electric” Okafor already impressing – as he was once labelled by scout Jacek Kulig – Farke won’t feel he has to show blind loyalty to his old guard going forward.

GT look to firm up top-two spot; CSK aim to salvage pride

Big picture: GT must win to play Qualifier 1

Gujarat Titans (GT) were among the first three teams to seal their berth in the playoffs, and will now head into their final game of the league stage on top of the points table. But they are still not guaranteed a top-two finish, and need another win on Sunday to be sure of playing Qualifier 1 and not the Eliminator. In their last match, GT went down to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and on Sunday, they face Chennai Super Kings (CSK), another team that has been knocked out. CSK will be playing for pride in Ahmedabad, and wouldn’t want to end the season with back-to-back losses. The defeat to LSG also means GT can’t afford the luxury of resting some of their fast bowlers ahead of the knockouts. They will also hope that Rashid Khan, who is having his worst IPL season with the ball, can find some form and momentum in this game before heading into the playoffs. For CSK, it has been a horror season with several unwanted records, and are set to finish at the bottom of the table for the first time. The five-time champions will want to emulate LSG and sign off by defeating GT, one of the title contenders.

Form guide

Gujarat Titans: LWWWL (Last five completed matches, most recent first)
Chennai Super Kings: LWLLL

In the spotlight

R Sai Kishore spent three seasons on the CSK bench. He was then signed by GT, and made five appearances each in 2022 and 2024, though didn’t get a game in 2023. He has enjoyed his breakout season in IPL 2025, taking 16 wickets in 13 games. Sai Kishore has displayed both skill and guile, and has shown he can be effective even against left-hand batters. The Chennai-born left-arm spinner will want to step up and show his former team just what they missed out on.4:42

‘The zip has been missing in Rashid’s bowling’

Joining CSK as a mid-season replacement, Dewald Brevis is another player enjoying a breakout IPL campaign. Despite playing just five matches, he has already had his most prolific season. Brevis has struck at 164.70, giving CSK much-needed power in the middle order, something that their stand-in captain MS Dhoni also acknowledged after their last match. A highly-rated youngster, Brevis will want to finish the season on a high and ensure he is either retained, or is a hot pick in the next auction.

Team news and likely XIIs

This will be the final game where GT will have Jos Buttler and Kagiso Rabada available. With Rabada going for runs in the last match, they might replace him with Gerald Coetzee. But other than that, it is unlikely they will make any change.Gujarat Titans: 1 Shubman Gill (capt), 2 B Sai Sudharsan, 3 Jos Buttler (wk), 4 Sherfane Rutherford, 5 M Shahrukh Khan, 6 Rahul Tewatia, 7 Arshad Khan, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Kagiso Rabada/Gerald Coetzee, 10 R Sai Kishore, 11 Mohammed Siraj, 12 M Prasidh KrishnaCSK are coming off a defeat, and could look to bring Shaik Rasheed back for Devon Conway, who hasn’t had a good season at the top.Chennai Super Kings: 1 Ayush Mhatre, 2 Shaik Rasheed/Devon Conway, 3 Urvil Patel, 4 Ravindra Jadeja, 5 Dewald Brevis, 6 Shivam Dube, 7 R Ashwin, 8 MS Dhoni (wk, capt), 9 Anshul Kamboj, 10 Noor Ahmad, 11 Khaleel Ahmed, 12 Matheesha Pathirana

The big question

Pitch and conditions

The Narendra Modi Stadium has been a venue for batting first this season, and the trend continued in the last game there as LSG set GT a daunting target of 236. Five of the six matches in Ahmedabad this season have been won by teams batting first.

Stats and trivia

  • GT’s top three averages 58.29 this season, the highest for any team. In contrast, CSK’s top three averages the lowest (23.21). GT have also used the joint-fewest batters in those positions, while CSK have used the most.
  • Despite them scoring the fewest runs, GT’s middle order has scored quicker than any other team in the season with a strike rate of 166.66, while CSK’s middle order has been the slowest scoring unit in the league (134.18).
  • Matheesha Pathirana has bowled to Sai Sudharsan in two games, and dismissed him both times, although the GT opener has taken 38 runs at a strike rate of 190 off him.

Villiers shines with bat and ball as Durham beat Essex

Mady Villiers and Mia Rogers shared a stand of 98 as Durham made it back-to back wins in the Metro Bank One-day Cup women’s competition with a six-wicket victory over hosts Essex.Rogers led the charge with an unbeaten 66, while Villiers, back on what was her home ground for more than a decade until her move north over the winter made 46 as the visitors recovered from 55 for 3 to win with 70 balls to spare.Earlier, a catastrophic runout sparked a collapse by the hosts in which they lost seven wickets for 53 runs in 81 balls, Villiers taking 3 for 28, while Ariana Dowse was left stranded on 43 not out.Lissy Macleod was dropped on 2, but that scare aside Essex began well after being sent in. Macleod lofted Grace Thompson back over her head for six, while in-form skipper Grace Scriven unfurled a couple of square cuts as the openers posted a 50-stand in 49 balls.Thompson switched ends to break the partnership with the last ball of the powerplay, Macleod strangled down the leg side. The same combination accounted for Scrivens soon afterwards, the host’s skipper wafting at a wide one outside off stump.Dowse and Sophia Smale steadied matters, the latter driving Villiers for four before sweeping Susie Bates to the legside boundary as the pair added 51 in 12 overs.Smale perished tentatively paddling one from Villiers around the corner to backward square but Essex still looked handily placed at 120 for 3 at halfway. Then came the runout, confusion over a second leaving both batters mid-pitch, Amara Carr unable to turn and beat Villiers’s throw. It was the catalyst for the collapse, in-form Phoebe Turner taking two in an over, including Jo Gardner for a second-ball duck.Dowse stood firm to remain unbeaten on 43, but spin twins Villiers and Katy Levick, proved too much for the home side’s tail.Needing early wickets Essex made a dream start, New Zealand international Bates edging a swinging ball from the excellent Eva Gray to a diving Carr. If that was a good ball, Esmae MacGregor produced a beauty to befuddle skipper Hollie Armitage and clip the top of off.Emma Marlow’s response to adversity was to plunder three boundaries from MacGregor’s next over in racing to 30, but comical runouts were catching and a mix up saw her sent back by Villiers, the square leg umpire adjudging her short of her ground, though replays suggested the batter had made it home.Villiers and Rogers managed the rebuild, both driving Smale for four, while the former clubbed one from Abtaha Maqsood back over her head to raise the 50 partnership.Villiers fell just short of 50 top edging an attempted pull to Gray at mid-on, but Rogers completed her half century with the help of six fours.

Jamie Carragher compares misfiring Mohamed Salah to Cristiano Ronaldo as Liverpool forward looks to end barren run by piling misery on Man Utd

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has likened Mohamed Salah to Cristiano Ronaldo and explained why it is far too early to be writing the Egyptian superstar off at Liverpool. The remarkable numbers that he has been posting for the Reds have dipped slightly in 2025-26, on the back of signing a new contract, but the expectation is that he will come good again.

Salah's numbers have dipped after signing new contract

Salah has, having moved to Anfield in 2017, become a modern day legend in his own right. He is five appearances short of 300 for Liverpool and requires just two more goals in order to reach 250. He is a two-time Premier League title winner with Champions League and domestic cup honours to his name – along with three PFA Player of the Year awards and four Golden Boots.

Liverpool worked hard to agree an extension with their ‘Egyptian King’ over the summer, with fresh terms taking him through to 2027. More magical performances should be delivered in that time, despite the odd question being asked of his contribution at present – with the target only being found on three occasions through 10 appearances this term.

AdvertisementGettyToo early for Salah to be written off

Reds hero Carragher has said in his column for : "Liverpool have been basking in the glow of the Mohamed Salah era for the past seven years. The next seven weeks will give us an indication as to how much longer that will last. Salah is off form, the goals have dried up, and he does not look the same player as last season. If Liverpool are to retain the title, he needs to sharpen up before December’s African Cup of Nations, thus ensuring he is as indispensable as ever to Arne Slot when he gets back. There are valid causes for concern following recent performances. There are also valuable lessons from Salah’s career which serve as a warning to those prematurely predicting a decline. Do not write off Salah too soon because he has a habit of making criticism look silly."

Salah's record vs Man Utd: Stunning strike rate

A meeting with arch-rivals Manchester United is next on the agenda for Liverpool and Salah, much like Portuguese GOAT Ronaldo, tends to save his best for when it matters most. Carragher added on facing favoured opposition: "Salah has similar traits to Cristiano Ronaldo with regards to his mental toughness and determination to extend his career at the top and keep chasing records and trophies. The more he is doubted, the more he responds where it matters on the pitch.

"If there is one club which will fear negative appraisals of Salah’s form more than any, it is this weekend’s visitors to Anfield, Manchester United. Salah’s record versus United is extraordinary. He has scored 16 times against Liverpool’s historic rivals. No team has suffered more against him. His all-time tally in this fixture is seven more than any player for either club, enhancing his reputation as the man for the big occasion."

Carragher concedes that Liverpool may be wondering whether handing Salah a new deal was the right decision, with every talismanic figure seeing stunning individual standards dip at some stage. He said: "With respect to all of the great players who have served [Jurgen] Klopp and now [Arne] Slot, when football historians view this period they will see Liverpool as ‘the Salah team’. He has defined it in the way [Kenny] Dalglish did in the late 70s and 80s, John Barnes the late 80s, and [Steven] Gerrard the 2000s. Like the legends before him, even a footballer with Salah’s pace cannot outrun father time. It is a question of when, not if, the greatest realise they have been caught.

"Slot left Salah out of the first tricky Champions League away game in Galatasaray. With Salah unavailable when he joins Egypt in mid-season, Liverpool must get used to being without him. Salah must start to accept he may not start every week upon his return, which is never easy for such a high-profile, world-class player. Sooner or later Liverpool must move beyond Salah and enter the era of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz. Just don’t bet against Salah making that later rather than sooner."

Liverpool head into their home date with old adversaries United looking to snap a run of three successive defeats. Slot’s side have come unstuck against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea across domestic and Champions League competition, leading to them slipping from the Premier League summit in an ongoing bid to defend their English top-flight crown.

Arteta must drop Arsenal star who's "the best finisher at the club"

After Arsenal spent nearly £300m in the transfer window, pundits were making no excuses for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Despite a tough opening run of fixtures, they were told in no uncertain terms that this season they simply had to win the Premier League title.

While expectations were no doubt lofty, they still have to overcome the challenge of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and a Liverpool team that in signing Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak had broken the division’s transfer record twice in one summer.

In spite of those circumstances, the Gunners are top by one point heading into the October international break.

It’s been a seriously impressive start to 2025/26, and while they signed a plethora of new forwards, it’s their sturdy defensive record they have to thank yet again.

After seven weeks, they have the best defensive record and have conceded just one open play goal all campaign; that strike from Erling Haaland against City a few weeks ago. Fair enough, really, few have kept the Norwegian quiet lately.

How Arsenal's defence can carry them to the title

It’s safe to say that Arsenal’s defence has come a long way since Arteta first took the reins at the Emirates Stadium.

The Spaniard’s first match in charge saw the Gunners head to Bournemouth on Boxing Day in 2019. A 1-1 draw played out in which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rescued a point for the visitors at the Vitality Stadium.

GK – Bernd Leno

RB – Ainsley Maitland-Niles

CB – Sokratis

CB – David Luiz

LB – Bukayo Saka

CM – Granit Xhaka

CM – Lucas Torreira

RW – Reiss Nelson

No. 10 – Mesut Ozil

LW – P-E Aubameyang

CF – Alexandre Lacazette

A marker of the rise at Arsenal is the fact that Bukayo Saka started at left-back that day. Since then he’s become the poster boy of the Arteta project, playing in his 200th game for the club on Saturday.

It’s safe to say the backline has changed considerably. From those dreary days of Sokratis, David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding, to William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, the quality has soared.

From being a laughing stock defensively, the north Londoners now have not just the best defence in England, but arguably in Europe’s top five leagues.

In Saliba, they possess a Rolls-Royce defender, a player who in the words of Leandro Trossard is “one of the best in the world at the moment.”

In Gabriel, they have a colossus. He’s not as calm as Saliba, but that’s why the duo complement each other so well. The Brazilian is a titan and his goal record summarises that perfectly.

Even when one of them are injured, Arsenal have been able to cope well. When Gabriel sustained his hamstring injury during the second half of last season, Jakub Kiwior stepped up admirably, notably keeping a clean sheet against Real Madrid.

This term, with Saliba missing a few games due to his own injury problems, new £13m signing Cristhian Mosquera was outstanding, hailed by some as the club’s “signing of the summer”, such is the bargain price they have paid.

Combined with the likes of David Raya, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori, Arsenal have shipped just three league goals in seven matches. In the Champions League, they have conceded none. It’s a water-tight defence.

Now, however, they need a bit more help from the attackers.

How Arteta can improve Arsenal's forward line

It was blindingly obvious what the primary issue for Arsenal was last season; they didn’t score enough goals.

There were a number of reasons for that, chiefly the fact that Saka and Kai Havertz missed large parts of the campaign through injury.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Still, once all was said and done, for the first time since the 1923/24 season, an Arsenal player failed to make it to double figures across a league campaign.

So, over the summer, Andrea Berta and Co invested heavily in improving the attack. Viktor Gyokeres, the scorer of 54 goals in 2024/25 arrived, while Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze also came in to bolster the forward ranks.

Despite that, it still feels like there is a missing link in attack. Whether that be Arsenal’s left-hand side, or the chemistry being built with Gyokeres, there are a few problems.

Arsenal’s big Swede is improving game by game and Arteta appears to be happy with his performances, but ultimately, he will be judged on goals and he is not finding the net regularly enough.

After scoring against Nottingham Forest in the fourth gameweek of the season, he has not beaten the goalkeeper in his last six matches. In fact, across the striker’s last ten outings in all competitions, he has only scored once.

Yet, he is not the biggest problem. Like it was last season, the primary issue has been the left flank.

That being said, certain circumstances have dictated what they can and cannot do in that area of the pitch.

Madueke, now injured, played there against Manchester United and Leeds while Eze featured there against Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Athletic Club.

Since then, he’s been preferred in a more central role and that will likely continue after Martin Odegaard’s new injury setback.

As such, despite improved form for Gabriel Martinelli, Arteta has turned back to Trossard. The Belgian has feen a mighty fine servant since arriving from Brighton, notably scoring 17 times during the 2023/24 campaign. Only Saka found the net more regularly that year.

However, his powers are waning and he ended last year with just ten goals in all competitions from over 50 matches.

The forward has scored some big goals in Arsenal red. To some, including one content creator on X, he is “the best finisher at the club.” Certainly, some of his goals throughout his career in the capital have showcased why that is the case.

That 2023/24 season saw the 30-year-old net two goals against Chelsea, while he also scored against Manchester United, Liverpool and came up with vital strikes in the Champions League versus Porto and Bayern Munich.

Truth be told, Trossard is a clutch player, but he isn’t a player in 2025/26 that Arteta should be relying upon to start regular games.

His involvement over the last three games demonstrates why. Last weekend against Newcastle he only created one key pass and was unusually wasteful in front of goal, striking the post in the first half when he should have at least hit the target.

The Belgium international was again wasteful in midweek against Olympiacos, missing what were deemed as two ‘big chances’.

Then, against West Ham on Sunday, his influence was limited once again. Reduced to two blocked shots and only one accurate cross from six attempts, he lost possession a whopping 16 times and only completed one dribble. Nuno Santo’s men played with a deep block but Trossard only continues to look like the weak link in this forward line.

So, as much as this Arsenal team need to find a way to get more out of Gyokeres, equally, they need to find solutions on the left-hand side. That could well begin by dropping Trossard after the international break.
