Aston Villa eyeing fresh PSR bypass to sign "confident" Premier League star

After the sale of Jacob Ramsey handed them some wriggle room on the PSR front, Aston Villa are now reportedly eyeing a fresh approach to sign a player who Unai Emery loves.

Emery "accepts" PSR rules in frustrating summer

Aston Villa were finally forced to face their PSR concerns and sell an important member of Emery’s squad in Jacob Ramsey. The academy graduate completed a move to Newcastle United, who are likely to compete with Aston Villa for a place in the top six this season. It’s a move that needed to happen financially, but one that captain John McGinn has already aired his frustration about.

As frustrating as Ramsey’s sale will be for all involved at Villa Park, however, Emery has “accepted” PSR rules and reiterated the pride that he has in his side.

The Spaniard told reporters: “No, I’m not frustrated. I accept the rules, I accept where we are and how we are competing and how we are being ambitious in our capacity to compete with the better teams in the Premier League and in Europe.”

“I think you have to be proud of everything we are doing. But of course, everything we did for me is done now, we have to do it again and again and again and it’s starting again for me to beat these teams and to build, through the result, good performances and try to get our title we have.”

Meanwhile, what Ramsey’s departure has done is hand Villa some room to make some moves of their own, which could yet see them welcome a Premier League rival this month.

Aston Villa eyeing Jackson loan deal

Whilst they’re in no position to match his €60m (£52m) price tag, those at Villa Park could yet bypass FFP rules in a fresh approach to welcome Nicolas Jackson this summer. According to Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, Aston Villa are now eyeing a loan deal to sign Jackson after he was dropped by Chelsea following their own impressive additions.

Emery is reportedly a huge admirer of Jackson, who worked under the Villa boss during their time together at Villarreal, and may yet get the chance to strike a reunion before the transfer window slams shut.

Newcastle in pole position to hijack £35m Everton and West Ham target

Newcastle United’s status as a Champions League club means they are now are best-placed to win a hotly contested Premier League race for a highly decorated player.

Howe ready for "electric" Liverpool clash

The Magpies’ first home league of the season promises to be a cracker on Monday evening, with champions Liverpool making the trip to St James’ Park.

Relations between the two clubs aren’t exactly strong at the moment, given the Alexander Isak saga, and there is every chance that this is a ferocious game that could boil over at times.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is certainly looking forward to the match, saying in his pre-match press conference that he expects St James’ to be “electric” on Monday.

Once the dust settles after the Liverpool game, attention will return to transfer business for Newcastle, both in terms of keeping Isak and bringing in new signings, and a fresh update has now dropped regarding a potential addition.

Newcastle winning race for Premier League defender

According to a new report from Caught Offside, Newcastle are in the best position to sign £35m-rated Manchester City defender Nathan Ake this summer. They are “better placed to match the ambitions” of the Dutchman than fellow suitors Everton and West Ham, because they “can offer continental competition this season and the promise of a prominent role in their squad”.

Last week, it was reported that the Magpies were looking to hijack the Toffees’ move for Ake, and they now appear to be in pole position to win the race, should he follow the likes of Jack Grealish and leave the Eithad in search of more regular playing time.

Manchester City's Nathan Ake

Ake ticks so many boxes for Newcastle at a time when defensive reinforcements are needed, possessing experience, a winning mentality and versatility.

The 30-year-old can flourish as both a centre-back and a left-back, and Pep Guardiola has spoken glowingly about his defender in the past.

Carrington star likened to Yamal could now leave Man Utd, he wanted to stay

Manchester United are striving to finish the transfer window in strong fashion, though they may face a difficult question to answer regarding one of their finest academy graduates.

Manchester United miss chance to see off Fulham

Ruben Amorim will need to wait a little longer for his first victory of the Premier League season after Manchester United missed the chance to see off Fulham at Craven Cottage last Sunday.

Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty that would’ve put his side in the ascendancy before Emile Smith-Rowe cancelled out Leny Yoro’s opener to leave the Red Devils with a point from their first two top-flight matches.

In the face of an underwhelming start, Wayne Rooney has indicated that Amorim has pressure on his shoulders if he is to become a successful manager at Old Trafford, claiming results need to occur sooner rather than later.

He stated on the Wayne Rooney Show: “There are no excuses now for the manager this season. He’s got to start getting results and getting results quickly because once you start getting into October, November, if results don’t change drastically then that’s when pressure comes. United really needed to hit the ground running this season and one point from six is a worry.”

Senne Lammens could be on his way to Manchester United from Royal Antwerp to alleviate pressure on Andre Onana between the sticks. Meanwhile, Adam Wharton may swap Crystal Palace for the Red Devils to fill the vacant hole in their midfield.

Nevertheless, sales will be needed to sanction more incomings, and Amorim now faces an intriguing question involving a member of his first-team squad who could now be set for the exit door.

Kobbie Mainoo could leave Manchester United

According to talkSPORT, Kobbie Mainoo would consider a Manchester United exit before the window shuts after being an unused substitute in their first two Premier League matches against Arsenal and Fulham, having previously wanted to sign a new deal.

The England international has been told to fight for his place by Amorim, who stated in his post-match press conference: “He’s fighting for the position now with Bruno. I let Mason Mount (play) there because we want to score a goal, and when I changed, I felt the team needed to return to one holding midfielder near Bruno.”

Manchester United could be about to make a move for another big-money signing this summer.

Beaten to the 2024 Golden Boy award by Lamine Yamal, they both enjoyed breakthrough campaigns at last summer’s European Championships and Mainoo found himself in the top-five ranking for best teenagers in world football via the CIES Football Observatory, alongside the Spain international.

Last season, Mainoo scored twice and claimed an assist in 37 appearances across all competitions, albeit he did struggle to replicate his exploits in 2023/24, where he struck on five occasions.

Amorim doesn’t seem to have the Carrington graduate at the forefront of his mind, though it remains to be seen what interest could arise for his services in the final stretch of the window.

Beau Webster returns to Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL

But Hurricanes are yet to re-sign Tim David; Melbourne Stars, meanwhile, bag Liam Hatcher

Australia Test allrounder Beau Webster has returned to BBL champions Hobart Hurricanes on a three-year deal, having not played for his home state’s team since 2017.Webster, 31, played five matches for Hurricanes in 2016-17, but has spent the past eight seasons in Melbourne: he was there for four seasons with Renegades, before another four with Stars. But having played his entire domestic career for his home state Tasmania, Webster will return to play for Hurricanes in the BBL over the next three seasons.Related

“I am pumped to return to Hobart next summer for the BBL, and get the opportunity to play on a packed Ninja Stadium in front of our fans, my friends and family,” Webster said.”Vaughany [Jeff Vaughan] and Nelly [Nathan Ellis] have got the group playing a really good brand of cricket, and to see them win a championship makes me hungry to bring another one to ‘Canes fans next season.”Webster signing is an interesting move by Hurricanes given they already have seam-bowling allrounders in Mitchell Owen and Chris Jordan in the top seven of their title-winning team. Despite Webster’s outstanding first-class record, he hasn’t been as dominant in T20 cricket. He has failed to strike at more than 132 in any of his last seven BBL seasons, and it will be interesting to see how he slips into Hurricanes’ high-tempo batting unit. But Hurricanes general manager Salliann Beams was pleased to bring Webster back to Hobart.”We have seen over the past 18 months just how special of a player Beau is, and to have him re-join the Hurricanes is something that will make all Tasmanians proud to hear,” Beams said. “Beau’s skill set in the short form of the game is up there with some of the best in the country, and he can take the game away from the opposition with the bat while also providing another wicket-taking option with the ball.”His leadership will also be a vital aspect of his role at the Hurricanes, and he is great mates with the players we already have on our list, which means he will fit into what we are trying to build seamlessly.”Stars hopeful about David, and sign HatcherHurricanes are still yet to re-sign title-winning power hitter Tim David, but they are hopeful of keeping him after a successful season. But Stars are still hoping of landing him as a free agent.Meanwhile, Stars have signed New South Wales fast bowler Liam Hatcher on a two-year deal after he spent the past two seasons with Sydney Thunder. Hatcher began his BBL at Stars in 2020, playing 17 matches over two seasons before moving to Thunder in 2023. But he played just four games in his first season in 2023-24, and did not feature at all in Thunder’s run to the final in 2024-25.

Calls for Women's Ashes to include three Tests

Players from Australia and England have called for future multi-format Women’s Ashes series to include three Test matches, although the chances of that becoming a reality are slim, certainly in the next four years. In the upcoming series, the one-off Test – a four-day match under floodlights at the MCG – will be played as the final instalment of the Ashes for the first time since it was introduced in 2013. The match is worth four points for a win and two for a draw meaning one side could be in a position knowing that avoiding defeat would be enough to win the series.England need an outright points victory to regain the Ashes with Australia having clung on in 2023, which was shared 8-8 despite the visitors winning the Test at Trent Bridge, which began the series.Related

Prior to the multi-format concept, the Ashes was decided purely on Test cricket. The last time a series involved more than a single game was in 2005 and Australia allrounder Ashleigh Gardner has led the call for three Tests to go alongside the three ODIs and three T20Is.”From [the] workload [point of view], it would be quite tough with how busy our summers are, but personally I would love to see three, three, three,” Gardner, who took 8 for 66 in the previous Ashes Test, said. “It’s obviously going to make the tours a lot longer, [and] not sure where you are going to fit it in, knowing we are still going to have to play overseas competitions as well. It would be interesting to see over the next four to five years where that gets to.”But I know personally I’d love to play more Test cricket against England. Playing the one Test feels like a bit of novelty sometimes. We obviously have some really good white-ball games against England and other nations around the world but think the way our teams match up it would be a really cool Test series to see who would come out on top for that. But don’t think that’s probably going to change anytime soon.”England batter Tammy Beaumont, another star of the 2023 Test where she made a double-century, backed Gardner’s views on an expansion of the format, saying it would help build the storylines around a series.”Absolutely, I completely agree with Ash,” she said. “I’d love to see three, three, three. The best thing about the Ashes is the narrative, the rivalry, how it builds over time. You saw in the India-Australia men’s Test series, the narratives build in a five-match series, and even in a three-match series, whether it’s the kind of things like [Jasprit] Bumrah always getting the same people out or things like that. As an opening batter, that’s part of why you love the game, that battle of trying to maybe getting one-up on an opening bowler, think it builds even more in Test cricket. That’s why I love getting the whites on and I’d love to see more.”Late last year, the next four-year cycle of the Future Tours Programme was locked in and, while West Indies will return to Test cricket, further matches being added to Ashes series would appear unlikely.”Space in the calendar is a real challenge,” outgoing Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said. “What I would like to see is more countries playing multi-format series more regularly.”Ashleigh Gardner’s 8 for 66 secured Australia a vital victory in the 2023 Ashes Test•Getty Images

The next FTP also sees the Women’s Premier League (WPL) move to January, meaning this Ashes series is the last time for at least four years that Australia will be able to play in the prime summer holiday window with their main international block moving to February and March. While the 2023 Ashes in England, which took place concurrently with the men’s series, drew record crowds, there is a sense in Australia that the game hasn’t quite been able to recapture the momentum that was building when the 2020 T20 World Cup final was played in front of 86,174 at the MCG only for Covid to shut down the world a few days later. Alongside the MCG Test in this Ashes, T20Is will also be played at the SCG and Adelaide Oval.”This is such an important series for us,” Gardner said. “The Ashes in general in such a big series, pretty much just behind the World Cup for us in my opinion. We’ve been so successful over the last five or six years, it’s probably one part of our game we’ve been a little bit disappointed with is not seeing as many people as we would have like.”Obviously to have the T20 World Cup five years ago now and to pretty much sell out the MCG, then for Covid to kind of put dampener on the path Australian cricket was going… but fingers crossed after a pretty successful men’s Test series people can come and support our series as well because we are going up against our fiercest rivals and they just went against theirs.”

‘In the back of my mind’ – Harry Kane still keen on NFL crossover but Bayern Munich & England striker admits move to American football is ‘a long way away’

Harry Kane admits that an NFL crossover remains “in the back of my mind”, but says a move into American football remains “a long way away”. The prolific Bayern Munich and England striker has never hidden the fact that he would like to test himself as a placekicker. There is, however, plenty left for him to achieve in his sport of choice before considering any switch into another.

Which NFL team does Kane support?Three Lions captain Kane is a big NFL fan, with his colours being nailed to the New England Patriots’ mast during Tom Brady’s record-shattering spell as quarterback in Massachusetts. He has attended regular season games in Europe and Super Bowl LIII.AdvertisementFrom penalty-taking to placekicking

Kane’s ability to strike a clean ball – which is highlighted in his remarkable penalty-scoring record – suggests that he would have little trouble adjusting to the demands of kicking for points in the United States.

Relocation to the United States requiredHe would, however, need to commit fully to learning a new role and relocating his family again. For now, at 32 years of age, Kane is happy for any potential NFL career to remain a distant dream – with there no plans on his part to go chasing that any time soon.ENJOYED THIS STORY?

Newcastle close in on £70m double deal for new striker and Malick Thiaw

Newcastle United could now complete the £35m signing of a “remarkable” striker, coming after a breakthrough around a similar price for AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.

Magpies agree £35m deal for Malick Thiaw

Eddie Howe shared the latest on Alexander Isak’s situation at St James’ Park after the 2-2 draw against Espanyol on Friday, not exactly guaranteeing that he will be staying put.

“I don’t know how long that will be for. It’s clear I can’t involve him with the team at the moment. He is training later than the rest of the squad. There have been discussions since the tour. I don’t think disciplinary action has happened.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their first goal

“He is here, so of course he has a future at Newcastle. From our perspective, we would love to have him back with the team, but the situation has to be right for that to happen. He doesn’t have a fitness issue. I’m aware of a feeling within the squad that there’s something there not to the benefit of the group.”

It goes without saying that at least one top-quality striker will be needed for Newcastle if Isak does leave, if not two – the likes of Michail Antonio have been mentioned as a possible replacement for Callum Wilson.

Newcastle also need to strengthen in defence however, and a move for Milan starlet Thiaw is gathering pace. Indeed, Keith Downie revealed on Saturday afternoon that ‘Newcastle now have an agreement in principle with AC Milan’ for around £35m, and the German defender will sign a four-year contract on Tyneside.

AC Milan's MalickThiaw

Newcastle could also sign £35m striker this weekend

According to Downie, Thiaw may not be the only signing on the horizon, as Yoane Wissa’s representatives are travelling to the UK this weekend, looking to seal a move away from Brentford, also for around £35m.

The Bees striker is desperate to join a club in the Champions League despite interest from Saudi teams, and PIF are ‘ready to finalise a deal’ in the coming hours and days.

It is reaching the stage where Newcastle may have to bite the bullet and accept a huge offer from Liverpool for Isak, rather than keeping an unhappy player, and it looks as though the likely British transfer record windfall from that deal will fund multiple moves in several positions.

In Wissa, Newcastle would be signing an experienced and proven Premier League player – one who scored 19 league goals last season, also being lauded by Thomas Frank back in 2023.

“Wissa, we knew, has always been a goalscorer. He scored seven goals in the first season and seven in the second in the Premier League, for a player that didn’t play much. It’s remarkable. I definitely think he is best as a 9. He’s got that nose for goals.”

Keeping a happy Isak is clearly still the ideal result for Newcastle, but there are plenty worse outcomes than picking up Wissa, Thiaw and a new midfielder with the funds generated from his exit.
