Nottingham Forest identify Elanga replacement in £50m Premier League star

Nottingham Forest may soon have to contemplate life without star winger Anthony Elanga, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side casting their eyes towards a Premier League star in search of a quality replacement.

While nothing is signed or confirmed just yet, Elanga is gradually heading in the direction of Newcastle United – coming as a blow to Nuno as he prepares the club for their first campaign back in Europe for decades.

The versatile Sweden international was one of Forest’s most influential attackers last season in their chase for Champions League qualification, which went all the way to the final day, with Nuno’s side having to settle for a place in the Conference League through no fault of Elanga’s.

Anthony Elanga

The 23-year-old bagged 12 assists and scored six goals in all competitions under Nuno last season, so much so that Newcastle are now attempting to agree a £55 million deal for Elanga with “positive” talks ongoing.

If Elanga does depart the City Ground, Forest were looking at PSV Eindhoven sensation Johan Bakayoko in January, and the Belgian is re-emerging as a rumoured target.

According to information from Nottingham Forest News, Liverpool forward Harvey Elliott is being considered as well, following his sublime performances with England at the Under-21 European Championship.

England's Harvey Elliott and England's Jay Stansfield celebrate after the match as Germany's RoccoReitzlooks dejected

Elliott opened the scoring for England in their 3-2 final win over Germany late last month, helping Lee Carsley’s side with four other goals en route to the final, and the 22-year-old’s exceptional displays have placed him on the radar of numerous top-flight sides who could look to tempt him away from Anfield.

Liverpool will reportedly demand around £50 million to sell the former Fulham academy graduate, but this hasn’t deterred Forest.

Forest identify Harvey Elliott as potential Elanga replacement

According to Forest News, Elliott is on Nuno’s initial shortlist of potential replacements for Elanga, alongside Bakayoko.

The attacking midfielder struggled for Premier League minutes in an illustrious title-winning side last term, but contributed when called upon. Elliott was out for a large portion of the early-season with a broken foot, but began to find his own towards the latter stages of 2024/2025.

England's James McAtee applauds fans after the match asHarveyElliottlooks on

Elliott scored the winner in a 1-0 victory at PSG in the Champions League round of 16, after also scoring against both Lille and PSV in the league phase, so he’s a player capable of performing at the very highest level.

Clubs may well lure him with the promise of more consistent game time, and considering Elanga’s potentially imminent exit, we certainly cannot discount Forest.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he looks to leave Liverpool this summer,” said former scout Mick Brown to Football Insider recently.

“There are a number of clubs in the Premier League and abroad who want to sign him. He’s a better player than a lot of people give him credit for, and when he comes on as a sub he always produces quality moments.

“It’s difficult to understand why he hasn’t been playing at Liverpool. Maybe he doesn’t get on particularly well with the manager, maybe he’s just not the right fit for their system, but he’s a very talented player.

“I expect clubs will be queuing up for him if he does become available. He’s the type of player who would add something to most teams in the country.”

Sarfaraz's historic 221* grinds down Rest of India

Sarfaraz Khan ground down Rest of India (ROI) on day two, becoming the first-ever batter to make a double-century for Mumbai in the Irani Cup. He was part of a 131-run stand with Ajinkya Rahane (97) for the fifth wicket and a 183-run stand with Tanush Kotian (64) for the seventh wicket as ROI toiled away for 138 overs in Lucknow. The day started with Mumbai on 237 for 4. Sarfaraz and Rahane saw off the first 10 overs of the day before Rahane fell three short of a hundred to a bouncer from Yash Dayal, with the new ball under two overs away from being available.Related

ROI took it a ball into the 81st over and were rewarded almost immediately as Mukesh Kumar castled Shams Mulani. Kotian joined Sarfaraz with Mumbai on 280 for 6 and started watchfully. Then boundaries began to trickle in as the duo put away loose balls.Prasidh Krishna, running in from mid-on, dropped a tough chance handed by Sarfaraz on 97*, off Manav Suthar’s bowling. Sarfaraz brought up his 15th first-class century and the fifty partnership in the following (92nd) over.Mumbai’s domination was cemented in the afternoon session where they scored 111 runs off 26 wicketless overs at a run rate of 4.27. Sarfaraz set the tone with a boundary each off Suthar and Prasidh in the first two overs of the session. Then, with the ball just under 25 overs old, Sarfaraz smashed Suthar for a six and a four in the 105th over before Kotian flicked Saransh Jain for another six two balls later. Sarfaraz brought up his 150 and Mumbai their 400 with relative ease. Kotian had four boundaries when he reached his fifty before Mumbai finished the session on 449 for 6.Prasidh struck twice in two balls in the third over after tea, knocking over Kotian with a slower ball and trapping Mohit Avasthi lbw with an inswinger next ball. But Shardul Thakur’s entry at No. 10 showed Mumbai’s batting depth and allowed Sarfaraz, on 186*, to bat without having to worry about farming the strike.Sarfaraz took down Suthar for a six and a four in successive overs before bringing up his double-ton off his 253rd ball in the 127th over. Wasim Jaffer, Ravi Shastri and Yashasvi Jaiswal – all from Mumbai – have previously made double-centuries in the Irani Cup, but while representing ROI.The physio was often out on the field in the evening, allowing only 18 overs of play in the final session while Mumbai cruised past 500. Sarfaraz overturned a caught-behind call off Mukesh on 211, denying him a five-for. Thakur fell against the run of play in what turned out to be the last over of the day, playing on off Saransh for 36.A first-innings lead will be enough for Mumbai to clinch the trophy if the match ends in a draw.

Newcastle now set to take key next step in Wissa deal after offer rejected

Newcastle United aren’t giving up on their chase to sign an attacking reinforcement and are now reportedly set to take their next key step towards their top target.

Eddie Howe admits Newcastle "frustration"

The Magpies have faced an endless brick wall in pursuit of their top targets so far this summer – whether it’s been Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo or Hugo Ekitike. Reports are now even suggesting that Manchester City could hijack their move to sign Burnley shot-stopper James Trafford. But Eddie Howe and everyone else involved at St James’ Park are not giving up on welcoming much-needed reinforcements just yet.

The Newcastle boss shared his thoughts on a frustrating summer recently, admitting that Newcastle were hoping to get any business done early but have simply been unable to get deals over the line.

All involved in Tyneside will be desperate not to miss out on any more targets and reports are now suggesting that they’re working to ensure that their striker problem is finally solved.

Newcastle expected to take key Wissa step

As reported by GiveMeSport, Newcastle are now expected to submit an improved offer to sign Yoane Wissa after Brentford rejected their opening bid worth around £25m. Whether that second bid, which will reportedly be worth £30m, is successful remains to be seen, but the striker has told the Bees he wants to leave.

Having already lost Mbeumo, Brentford are reportedly demanding as much as £50m to sell Wissa this summer. Given that he has just one year left on his current deal and has already left the Bees’ pre-season camp amid transfer speculation, however, there could yet be room to negotiate that valuation.

Russell and TKR pay tribute to CPL legend Bravo

The allrounder received a guard of honour in what seemed to be his final CPL game

But he has played just two games so far this season, and the one against defending champions Guyana Amazon Warriors at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain might have been his last, Russell suggested after winning the Player-of-the-Match award and dedicating it to his good friend.”I’m just happy to be part of this game tonight and that’s the reason why so much emotion was kind of behind that celebration,” Russell said after Trinbago Knight Riders beat Amazon Warriors by five wickets. “He [Bravo] deserves a win tonight. You have helped me a lot with my cricket – how to outthink the batter and then to be a smarter bowler. You’re not going to get it right all the time but once you have the right mindset to get the execution, I think you’re on the right way.”We’re going to miss him but I hope he is still going to be around for the rest of the tournament. Watching him play in Test cricket for West Indies – bowling good pace, fielding and diving and all those things and then when he comes to bat, he gets the job done.”

The rest of the TKR players and support staff also seemed to suggest this might have been Bravo’s final CPL match as they honoured him by wearing his No. 47 shirt and giving him a guard of honour before he stepped onto the field.Bravo bowled Keemo Paul for 3 and snagged a sharp catch at slip to dismiss Tim Robinson for 34. Before the start of the Trinidad leg of the tournament, Pollard also toasted Bravo’s role in TKR’s success.

“The impact has been fantastic and tremendous in terms of the individuals he has brought to the franchise from all over the world,” Pollard said of Bravo in a chat with . “At one point an Australian coach in Simon Helmot, he won a championship with him, to the local support staff who have been here since the inception. Prior to the start of this CPL, Russell had also been rested for West Indies’ home T20I series against South Africa, but his return, along with Bravo’s, lent so much domestic depth to TKR’s XI that they could afford to play with just two overseas players in Tim David and Waqar Salamkheil.”It feels good to be back in the middle,” Russell said. “I’ve been struggling with an ankle injury over the past couple of weeks and you know these guys [support staff] have been doing some amazing job, getting me back on the park. He's like Saka & Saliba: Arsenal set to complete move to sign "elite" star

Cast your mind back to the summer deadline day of 2024 and you may remember Edu standing outside Arsenal’s Colney training base in the dark.

It was late, so late in fact that the window had closed.

Edu was providing a rundown of why the Gunners signed Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea. “It was never the plan,” the Brazilian said.

Well, nearly a year on, Edu and Sterling have gone. Andrea Berta and Noni Madueke have replaced them.

When Berta arrived at the Emirates Stadium, supporters were keen to understand his practices, keen to see him get to work in the window.

Well, it’s safe to say he’s done a fabulous job so far, bringing in the aforementioned Madueke alongside Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard.

Viktor Gyokeres is also set to join once the add-ons of his move from Sporting have been finalised.

But Gyokeres aside, what else is happening this summer?

Arsenal's plans for the rest of the window

It’s safe to say that the Gunners have been particularly active in the market this window but they don’t have a bottomless pit of cash, and if and when Gyokeres finally arrives, it’s likely the focus will turn to outgoings.

Should they raise more cash there, it would not be a surprise to see Arsenal lodge a formal approach for Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze.

Crystal Palace's EberechiEzecelebrates with the trophy after winning the FA Cup

The hierarchy at Arsenal have already held talks with the player’s agent and it’s believed that personal terms have already been agreed.

Still, he’s not the only player with whom things feel more advanced.

According to reports from Spain, Arsenal have now finally “completed” a move to sign Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The centre-back has been widely expected to move to England after he was spotted leaving Valencia’s training ground earlier in the week.

A leaked image even surfaced online of the player carrying out his media duties with Arsenal.

Yet, complications with the medical have allegedly led to a delay in the deal being confirmed. Alas, confirmation is now expected shortly.

That report from Spanish media suggests that all documents have been completed with only the player’s signature to be confirmed.

Why Mosquera is a good signing for Arsenal

This 21-year-old defender certainly isn’t a household name just yet but his education has been impressive and he’s got an old head on young shoulders.

Despite his age, he’s already played 90 times at senior level and he’s remarkably consistent too. No U21 player in Europe’s top five leagues played more minutes than him last season.

Mosquera’s availability is seriously impressive, as is the pressure that the centre-back’s been playing under.

Having come through the young ranks, he was thrown into the deep end of a relegation battle. One of Spain’s top sides, a former Champions League winner, were in deep trouble during the first half of 2024/25.

Cristhian Mosquera for Valencia.

After 17 games, Mosquera and his teammates sat 19th in LaLiga, having won just two games. Yet, he managed to help dig his side out of a hole and was seen as a saviour come the end of the campaign with Valencia finishing 12th.

Coming into the squad amid a crisis, becoming a fan favourite and playing a huge amount of minutes, there are certainly comparisons with Bukayo Saka’s rise at Arsenal.

While Mikel Arteta’s side have never been close to relegation, Saka was seen as a saviour when the Spaniard first became manager. Arsenal had endured several years away from the Champions League and never looked like competing for a title before the duo emerged on the scene. Yet, just like Mosquera, the young Saka carried the club on his shoulders.

Real Betis' Vitor Roque in action with Valencia'sCristhianMosquera

So, he’s clearly got elite mental fortitude, but how about his technical attributes? Well, he’s a lot like William Saliba in that regard.

Both standing at around 6 foot 3, they have a slightly gangly yet graceful play style.

They are competent in the air but it’s in possession where they are most alike. Indeed, one analyst on social media notes how Mosquera is “Saliba-esque” when it comes to dribbling.

The clip below highlights this superbly well. In fact, if your vision was a little blurred, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was actually Saliba.

The way he holds the ball, rolls it forward and then bursts between the press is identical to Saliba who has made a living out of his supreme ball-playing confidence in an Arsenal shirt.

Long have the Gunners needed someone to play second fiddle to Gabriel and Saliba and in Mosquera, “an elite level prospect” in the words of analyst Harvey Diamonds, it looks as though they’ve found the ideal profile.

He’s got the mental stability of a young Saka and the technical defensive qualities of Saliba. That sounds like a lovely combination.

Better move than Gassama: Ibrox target wants to sign for Rangers this week

Glasgow Rangers completed their latest signing of the summer transfer window on Tuesday when they confirmed the arrival of Djedi Gassama at Ibrox.

The 21-year-old winger has arrived at Rangers on a four-year deal to bolster Russell Martin’s options on the flanks, after he scored seven goals in 43 games last season.

Gassama will be hoping to provide a threat in the final third on a regular basis for the Scottish Premiership giants next term, and could be in line to make his debut against Panathinaikos in the Champions League qualifier later this month.

The French forward may not be the only player to arrive at Ibrox this week, though, as there is another player who wants to make the switch to Glasgow in the coming days.

English star pushing to sign for Rangers

One of Martin’s transfer targets is said to be pushing for a move to Ibrox this week, and it could be an even better signing than Gassama if they can get it over the line.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to the Daily Record, Leicester City central defender wants to complete a transfer to Rangers from the Championship side by the end of this week.

The report claims that the former England international is ready to plead with the Foxes to give him the green light to make the move to Ibrox, in order to be in the squad to face Panathinaikos later this month.

It adds that Martin is a big fan of Coady and that the player wants to join the club to be the ‘linchpin’ of the new defensive set-up at Ibrox next season.

Why Coady would be a better signing than Gassama

At least for next season, the veteran central defender could be an even better signing than Gassama because of the quality and experience that he could use to hit the ground running.

Gassama, at the age of 21, is a young and promising forward who may need time to adapt to Scottish football and to grow as a player, having only managed eight goal contributions in 43 games in the second tier in England last term.

Meanwhile, Coady is 32 and has made 198 appearances in the Premier League. He has proven himself at the very top level in domestic European football, and showcased his in-possession qualities when Leicester were in the Championship in the 2023/24 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the English star is a centre-back who has the quality and mentality to be incredibly progressive with his use of the ball, helping his team to play through the thirds quickly and effectively in a ball-dominant team.

Off the ball, Coady won 64% of his duels that season for the Foxes in their title-winning campaign, which shows that he can also dominate opposition attackers in physical tussles.

Leicester City's Conor Coady.

The former Wolves captain, who was described as an “infectious” character by Gareth Southgate, is a proven quantity who would be able to arrive at Rangers to provide instant, almost guaranteed, quality on the pitch with his abilities in and out of possession as a centre-back.

There is far less risk attached to signing a proven player like Coady, who was playing in the Premier League last season, than bringing in a 21-year-old from the second division in England.

That is not to say that Gassama will be a bad signing, or that he is not an exciting addition, but Martin also needs instant quality and that is why Coady may be an even better piece of business if they can get it over the line this week.

Oliver Glasner hasn’t exactly enjoyed the best summer window after guiding Palace to their first ever major trophy at the end of last season.

The south Londoners are currently in a legal battle with UEFA, Nottingham Forest and Lyon after Palace’s spot in the Europa League was unceremoniously, and perhaps unfairly, revoked due to their alleged breach of multi-club ownership rules.

John Textor was forced to sell his shares in Palace, agreeing a £190 million deal for his 43% stake with New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, with the American tycoon also resigning from his leadership role at Lyon to try and avoid a demotion to the Conference League.

However, UEFA still followed through with their decision, and Palace have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in a bid to get their Europa League spot back.

A decision is expected on August 11 after a hearing three days prior, and whilst the Eagles take on UEFA, Glasner’s side also face the looming threat of losing key players.

Marc Guehi is attracting serious interest from Liverpool and other Premier League rivals ahead of deadline day on September 1, while multiple sources suggest that Arsenal are hot on the heels of star playmaker Eze.

The England international had a £60 million release clause in his contract, but that expired at 11:59pm on Friday night, so Arsenal will need to enter negotiations with Palace if they want to strike a deal.

Arsenal were not planning to trigger Eze’s clause anyway, and the 27-year-old remains very keen on a move across London after talks with both Mikel Arteta and Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta, according to reports.

Crystal Palace could sign Lucas Paqueta and Leandro Trossard to replace Eze

Football Transfers have an update on the ex-QPR star’s future, and it’s claimed that Steve Parish could make a “sensational double swoop” to replace Eze if he does leave.

Crystal Palace's EberechiEzeposes with the player of the match trophy

Indeed, West Ham creator Lucas Paqueta and Arsenal winger Leandro Trossard are of interest to Glasner’s side, and FT sources believe that Palace could bring in the two London stars simultaneously if Eze leaves.

The Brazilian is apparently Palace’s “major target”, but they’re also weighing up a move for Trossard, who could be used as a makeweight by Arsenal to sweeten any deal for Eze.

Lucas Paqueta

In a statement move, Palace may actually end up signing both Paqueta and Trossard, but for that to happen, Parish could need to milk as much cash for Eze as possible.

The Hammers midfielder commands a price tag of around £60 million, according to GiveMeSport, while Arsenal have placed a £17 million valuation on Trossard as he enters the final 11 months of his contract.

The £77 million duo are proven Premier League players, though, and could be worth their wait in gold for Glasner, who’s looking to build upon Palace’s historic FA Cup triumph at Wembley.
