  • Clinton makes senior England debut
  • Midfielder scored in Austria demolition
  • Thanked Stanway & Toone for their help
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Clinton started in a midfield three alongside Stanway and Toone, with the latter a last-minute addition to the team due to Fran Kirby's injury, and scored England's second goal of the 7-2 rout of Austria by ghosting into the box to head in. She operated in a slightly deeper role than she has been used to at WSL club side Tottenham, but Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman challenged her to try being a No.8, ultimately reaping the rewards.

  • WHAT CLINTON SAID

Clinton said: "Going into the game, it was probably the biggest one of my career so far, so for it to go like that, I'm very happy. Sarina told me at the start of the week that she was going to try me in the number eight position. I'm open to a challenge. It's nice to be deeper and get on the ball more.

"To be in there playing with Stanway and Toone – they really helped me out a lot. It's so competitive. There are so many great players and to be around them is unbelievable experience."

Wiegman added to : "I think that's a dream debut for her. She played well and has done really well in training. She was enjoying herself and it was a very good goal. I'm very happy for her."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Clinton was an unused squad member in the October and December camps but is arguably England's brightest new talent. She made an impact on loan at Bristol City from Manchester United last season, helping the Robins to promotion back into the WSL, and has flourished once more after being tested at a higher level during this season's loan with Spurs. The 20-year-old has started every league game, except against her parent club, registering four goals and two assists in that time.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CLINTON?

Clinton is still to make her debut for parent club Manchester United, loaned out in order to ensure she had more regular playing time this seaosn than if she had stayed put. The next target has to be establishing herself in the United fold, which seems like a no-brainer from the club after she has proven herself consistently in the WSL and now played for England too. Looking further ahead, Clinton also presents another option for Wiegman as the Lionesses look to defend their Euros title in 2025. But in the very immediate short-term, she will want to add to her debut cap when England play Italy in another friendly on Tuesday.

Perhaps with one eye on the fashion world as a post-career venture, Ronaldo will switch his focus back to football as Al-Nassr face Al Ain in the AFC Champions League on Monday. Aston Villa staff watch Calvin Bassey

Aston Villa sent club officials to watch Rangers defender Calvin Bassey on Saturday ahead of a possible summer move.

The Lowdown: Bassey linked with Villa

A left-back who can also turn out at centre-back, Bassey appears to be next on Steven Gerrard’s radar after the club secured a permanent move for Phillipe Coutinho earlier this month and also seem to be closing in on Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-news/” title=”Aston Villa latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Reliable reporter John Percy recently stated that Villa are considering a move for the 22-year-old, who has starred at Ibrox this season. The Nigeria international made a whopping 50 appearances in all competitions in 2021/22 and caught the eye during the Europa League final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in midweek.

The Latest: Villa staff watch Bassey

The Daily Record’s Scott Burns shared an update regarding Bassey and Villa late on Friday evening.

He stated that Villa would have officials in attendance at Hampden Park for the Scottish Cup final to watch Bassey in action, with Gerrard keen to sign the player that he brought to Scotland back in 2020.

The Verdict: They’ll have been impressed

Rangers put their Europa League heartbreak behind them to lift the Scottish Cup on Saturday, beating Hearts 2-0 after extra time.

Bassey once again impressed, earning a 9/10 match rating, with journalist Colin Duncan stating that the defender is ‘fast becoming’ the club’s ‘most important and influential player’.

You’d expect that Villa officials would have been impressed after ‘a monster of a performance’ from the versatile defender, so it wouldn’t come as a shock if NSWE got the chequebook out over the coming weeks.

Leeds: Orta interested in Ezzalzouli

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Abdessamad Ezzalzouli to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Spanish publication Sport (via Sport Witness), who claim that the Barcelona winger is a player Victor Orta has mentioned as a potential makeweight in negotiations between the two parties for the proposed transfer of Raphinha.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

However, the report goes on to state that Xavi has informed the 20-year-old that he will be a part of his first-team squad next season – something that could stand in the way of a potential switch to Elland Road this summer.

Orta’s next Raphinha

Considering the sheer amount of potential Ezzalzouli – commonly known as Ez Abde – quite clearly possesses, it is not difficult to understand why Orta is looking to include the winger as a part of Raphinha’s all but confirmed move to the Camp Nou this summer.

Indeed, the £12.5m-rated talent burst onto the Barcelona scene this season, making ten La Liga appearances – six of which came as starts – for the Catalan side, over which the 20-year-old scored one goal and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.6 shots, making 0.6 key passes and completing a quite remarkable 3.4 dribbles per game.

These metrics saw the £3k-per-week sensation average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.90, ranking him as Barca’s joint 15th-best player in the league – outperforming the likes of Adama Traore, Gavi, Sergi Roberto and Philippe Coutinho.

The forward also caught the eye over his 20 Primera Division R.F.E.F. outings for Barcelona B this term, bagging two goals and registering seven assists for Sergi Barjuan’s side.

Furthermore, following the winger’s emphatic finish in a 2-2 draw with CA Osasuna back in December, Xavi heaped a considerable amount of praise on the former Hercules CF starlet, with the 42-year-old stating:

“Extraordinary Abde, Gavi and Nico [Gonzalez]. They are supporting the team in difficult moments. The effort is extraordinary. Young people make a difference and that is difficult to digest. It is positive and negative, because they will not always perform excellently because they are young.

“Abde’s game is spectacular, and also Nico and Gavi’s. Abde is a differential player. He can make a difference, it is not because of the goal. He is a dagger. A marvel. It is a surprise. It is great news. They are making the difference in a tremendous way.”

As such, considering his undoubted ability with the ball at his feet, his abundant creativity and his deadly eye for goal, should Orta indeed manage to convince Barcelona to part with the 20-year-old this summer, the Spaniard could well have unearthed his next Raphinha – as Abde certainly looks to possess the potential to make a huge impact in England next season.

Man Utd linked with Adrien Rabiot

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from TuttoMercatoWeb (via TEAMtalk), United have expressed an interest in securing a deal for the midfielder after reportedly being offered the chance to sign him.

While the Red Devils will undeniably need to add at least one new midfielder to their ranks with the likes of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata announcing their departures recently, we feel that the club and Erik ten Hag should not be considering Rabiot as a potential recruit.

After making 227 senior appearances for Paris Saint-Germain in which he scored 24 goals and delivered 14 assists, the 27-year-old joined Juventus on a free transfer three years ago. Since then, though, the Frenchman has found the net just six times and provided a mere six assists in 129 appearances.

His latest Serie A campaign with Juventus provides a good indication of why United should avoid signing the former PSG youngster.

United must swerve Rabiot move

In 32 league appearances this season, Rabiot racked up a passing accuracy percentage of just 82.7%, lower than many of his current Bianconeri team-mates. Also, with just seven shots on target and 39 shot-creating actions throughout the campaign, the £175k-per-week midfielder failed to have much of an attacking impact on the team.

One other important factor is his behaviour off the pitch at times, as he left his previous club on rather sour terms after

Antero Henrique slammed the player for going out to a nightclub not long after PSG were knocked out of the Champions League by United in March 2019.

Henrique said: “

I find the attitude and lack of professionalism of a player like Adrien Rabiot towards the club, his teammates and the supporters unacceptable.”

Taking all this into account, while it does seem like United need to sign some midfielders this summer, the Juventus misfit should not be on their radar, or else it could result in a huge transfer calamity for Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils should instead be looking at other, more reliable midfield options who could come in and help get the club back to where they want to be.

Liverpool could sign Darwin Nunez this week

Liverpool could complete the big-money signing of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez imminently as the player has told his club he’s ready to quit, according to an update in the last 24 hours.

The Lowdown: Nunez heading to Anfield?

The 22-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield in recent days, with the Reds seemingly winning the race to sign him.

Nunez is considered one of the most exciting young attacking players in Europe, having scored 26 goals in just 24 Primeira Liga starts last season.

He also scored home and away against Liverpool in the Champions League – something that seemingly alerted Jurgen Klopp to his brilliance.

The Latest: Move done this week?

According to Football Insider’s Friday morning update, Nunez could officially become a Reds player by the end of this week, with the 22 year-old wanting it done ‘as soon as possible’ and a deal ‘edging closer’.

Negotiations are thought to be ‘accelerating’ and a long-term deal has been offered to the Uruguayan, who has told Benfica he wants to quit and move to Anfield – the report calls this a ‘clear sign the transfer is close to completion’.

[freshpress-quiz id=“398089″]

The Verdict: What a signing

Barring a major twist, it looks now a given that Nunez will be confirmed as a Liverpool player before too long, in what represents a significant piece of business for a likely record fee – Football Insider say £60m plus £20m in add-ons.

With Sadio Mane looking set to eventually join Bayern Munich, the Benfica sensation could be a perfect replacement down the middle, bringing goals, movement and physicality to the Reds’ attack.

At 22, he still has so many years ahead of him, too – he is eight years Mane’s younger – and is someone who could mature into a true Premier League force.

Everton: Lampard eyeing Otavio swoop

Everton are reportedly interested in making a move for Porto winger Otavio, as manager Frank Lampard looks to reshape his squad ahead of next term.

What’s the word?

According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo (via Sports Witness), the Toffees are one of the clubs who are said to be keen on the Brazil-born, Portugal international, with his current side anticipating ‘proposals’ from interested parties this summer.

The report suggests that the Premier League outfit have ‘asked for’ the 27-year-old, although are aware that they will likely have to meet his €60m (£51.2m) release clause if they are to tempt the Portuguese champions into a sale.

Equally, Lampard and co may not be alone in their pursuit of the 5 foot 8 playmaker, with the £27m-rated gem having also reportedly been the subject of interest from rivals Liverpool.

Richarlison replacement

This news comes amid reports that the club’s current leading man Richarlison could be on his way out of Goodison Park, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealing that Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing the Brazilian forward in the current window.

That potential exit would leave behind a gaping hole in the club’s ranks, with the 25-year-old having proved vital to keeping the club in the division last time out, netting ten goals and providing a further five assists in 30 league appearances despite what was a gruelling campaign on the whole.

The former Watford man – who left Vicarage Road in a £50m deal in 2018 – has scored 53 goals and provided 14 assists in 152 games in all competitions for the club over the past four years, while also forcing his way into international reckoning for Selecao, with 14 goals in just 36 games.

While at times “erratic”, as per BBC Sport pundit Jobi McAnuff, the one-time Fluminese man has undoubted quality that has so often bailed Everton out of trouble in the past, with his absence only set to prove another step backwards for a club who came so close to the brink last term.

In Otavio, however, those at Finch Farm may have found a suitable replacement, with the Porto star also possessing his own attacking quality, having chipped in with three goals and 11 assists in 32 league games in the 2021/22 campaign.

Largely deployed in a right midfield berth, the “phenomenal” gem – as he has been dubbed by one journalist – is also not afraid to carry out his defensive work, averaging an impressive 3.2 tackles per game last term and winning possession 1.3 times per game.

The six-cap gem – who has netted twice for his country thus far – may not quite be the goalscoring presence of the current Everton man, although he has that undoubted knack for unlocking a defence, with the Toffees seemingly in dire need of a creator to pull the strings in midfield.

He certainly won’t come cheap, although investing in the £32k-per-week genius could prove a real masterstroke, as well as helping to ease the possible loss of the outgoing Richarlison.

Liverpool still in the mix for De Ligt deal

Liverpool have been named as a potential destination for Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt, with the youngster facing an uncertain future in Turin.

What’s the word?

As per Calciomercato, the Merseyside outfit ‘should not be overlooked’ in the race for the 22-year-old’s signature, with the centre-back potentially up for grabs with just two years remaining on his existing contract.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

The Netherlands international – who signed from Ajax in a £67.5m deal three years ago – reportedly has a €125m (£107m) release clause in his existing contract which can be activated this summer, although that figure will rise to €140m (£119.5m) in 2023.

This follows reports last week that suggested the Premier League side were interested in a deal for the 37-cap colossus, albeit with Jurgen Klopp and co unsurprisingly not alone in their interest.

Klopp’s next Van Dijk

Any potential deal could see the former Borussia Dortmund boss land his next Virgil van Dijk, with the 55-year-old having already enjoyed success in bringing one Dutchman to Anfield in recent times.

Signed on a £75m deal from Southampton in 2018, the current Reds star has gone on to prove a talismanic figure for the club in recent seasons, playing a vital part in the Champions League triumph in 2019 and the subsequent league title success the following season.

Hailed as the “best centre-half of all time” by pundit Michael Owen, the 30-year-old has hardly put a foot wrong in his 181 appearances for the club in all competitions, with his impact having been felt most notably during his lengthy spell out with injury during the 2020/21 campaign, with Klopp’s men suffering as a result.

The commanding, 6 foot 4 leader is an almost impenetrable asset and arguably one of the most accomplished players in his position in Europe, notably ranking in the top 8% for aerials won and the top 7% for pass completion in comparison to his continental peers.

While it has proven a tricky stint in Italy for De Ligt, the £63m-rated gem is undoubtedly a real defensive force in his own right, with the Reds unlikely to find a better long-term heir to Van Dijk than his compatriot.

Dubbed a “monster” by David Amoyal, the £200k-per-week giant initially burst onto the scene as a teenager at Ajax, leading a youthful side – managed by new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag – to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019 and putting himself firmly on the map in the process.

A “brutal” defender – in the words of one journalist – the former Golden Boy recipient is a menace in both boxes and plays with a maturity that belies his years, with it hard to believe that is still only 22.

His youth means he has plenty of time left to kick on again should he opt for a new home in the near future, with Liverpool offering the perfect platform for him to be a success – he only has to look at the impact that his international colleague has made.

Newcastle have "looked at" Kalvin Phillips

An update has emerged on Newcastle and their interest in Kalvin Phillips in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

In the Chronicle Live’s Q&A, journalist Lee Ryder has revealed that the Leeds machine is a player PIF have had their eye on.

The reporter has cast doubt over whether or not it will happen after the Whites avoided the drop but the England international is on the club’s radar.

A fan asked about the possibility of a holding midfielder coming in and Ryder said: “I think if the star quality is there on certain players and they become available it can’t be ruled out. Kalvin Phillips is certainly a player they have looked at. Had Leeds gone down, I think that would have been stepped up but it would have been a huge fee for the England star.”

Eddie Howe’s own Declan Rice

If Dan Ashworth can now seal a masterclass by bringing Phillips – who has been valued at up to £60m – to the club, he can be Howe’s own version of West Ham and England enforcer Rice.

The Leeds man was once described as a “destroyer” by Steve McClaren and that is exactly what he is in the middle of the park as he breaks up play and wins the ball back for his team. He destroys opposition attacks with his full-blooded challenges and intelligent positional play, much like his England teammate does for the Hammers.

In the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, Rice averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.19 as he made 4.0 tackles and interceptions per game, whilst winning 58% of his duels.

Phillips, meanwhile, made 3.9 tackles and interceptions per match after managing an impressive 4.2 in the 2020/21 season – averaging a SofaScore rating of 7.21.

The pair played alongside each other for England in the European Championships last year and formed a solid partnership. Rice made 3.7 tackles and interceptions per game, whilst Phillips made 2.3 per match and completed 86% of his passes.

Both players are, therefore, adept at winning possession back for the team – for club and country – and have proven themselves on the top level – in the Premier League and internationally.

This is why Ashworth can now land Howe his own version of Rice by securing a deal to sign the Leeds enforcer before the end of the transfer window. He can be the ex-Bournemouth coach’s bully in the middle of the park; sliding into challenges, intercepting the ball, and destroying the opposition’s play.

Tottenham: Llorens makes major claim involving Conte

ESPN reporter Moisés Llorens has now made a major Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving manager Antonio Conte with a development expected ‘in the next days’.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye new defender…

As widely reported, it is said that a world class central defender is on Conte’s agenda among other positions after the north Londoners sealed an agreement for Premier League star Yves Bissouma (The Evening Standard).

A new right-wing-back and forward are also believed to be priority but club chief Fabio Paratici seems to be working pretty hard on the central defensive signing particularly.

GiveMeSport recently lifted the lid on Tottenham’s long list of targets for the role, including Alessandro Bastoni, Josko Gvardiol, Pau Torres, Marc Guehi, Gleison Bremer and Stefan De Vrij.

The Latest: ESPN reporter makes major claim involving Conte…

Indeed, a major update has come to light involving another defensive Conte target.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

ESPN claim that Spurs talks are ongoing to sign Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet as they eye a temporary deal.

Their reporter Llorens, sharing news on Twitter, says the Frenchman has ‘doubts’ so Conte will personally speak with him ‘in the next days’ to convince Lenglet to join.

The Verdict: Get it done?

The £170,000-per-week defender, we believe, should come as a last resort.

Targets like Torres and Bremer arguably come with more quality as the former is called a potentially ‘perfect’ Spurs signing while the latter has been branded an ’emerging superstar’.

Lenglet, meanwhile, struggled for regular starts at the Camp Nou over 2021/2022 and we believe Paratici should first set his sights higher before attempting a loan.
