Everton’s Richarlison reveals a stat that may give him extra motivation this weekend

Richarlison posted an image on Instagram showing that he’s now played 199 games in his career, and if he plays for Everton this weekend against West Ham he will reach the 200 mark.

He accompanied this image with a caption that roughly translates to: “Almost 200 games, but it seems like yesterday it all started! Thank you for always being with me on this journey.”

This milestone may give the Brazilian a little bit of extra motivation to get on the scoresheet against the Hammers, in order to make his 200th appearance a memorable one.

Richarlison is the type of player to step up on these types of situations too – he scored on his Everton debut and he also found the net on his first starts for both Watford and Brazil. A man for the big occasion.

Man City prodigy Phil Foden pushes for start against Aston Villa

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Raheem Sterling may have grabbed the headlines with another hat-trick for Manchester City, but it is Phil Foden who should have left the Etihad with the biggest smile after the Atalanta win.

Despite a late sending off for two debatable yellow cards within six minutes, the 19-year-old may have finally laid down his marker on Pep Guardiola’s side with his display.

Foden’s start against the Italian side was just his second of the season in all competitions after he played 90 minutes in the League Cup win over Preston North End. Alongside these two starts, the teenager has had just 11 minutes of league action but now, after his Champions League outing, he deserves a start in the top-flight.

Foden registered one assist against Atalanta and made four key passes, creating four big chances, per Sofascore. In truth, he could have left with more than the one assist and against Aston Villa this weekend, he could do the same.

The academy graduate proved his creativity on Tuesday and, considering Dean Smith’s side have let in 13 league goals already, Foden will be chomping at the bit to be involved once again this weekend.

Ultimately, City’s 29 league goals and Villa’s poor defence could be the perfect time for him to get some more Premier League experience.

The playmaker showed with his 94% pass accuracy that he can control the midfield alongside Kevin De Bruyne and help create for the likes of Sterling, who once again bagged three.

Sooner or later, Foden is most likely going to step into David Silva’s shoes with the Spaniard leaving at the end of the season.

If Guardiola wants this to happen he must begin to include him from the outset on a regular basis – starting against Villa.

Arsenal fans want Eddie Nketiah back in north London

Arsenal fans want Eddie Nketiah to return to the club following his late goal for Leeds United on Tuesday evening. The Gunners striker, who joined the Championship club on loan in the summer, netted an 87th-minute header to rescue a point for his side.

Leeds subsequently sit second in the table, two points behind West Bromwich Albion and one ahead of Sheffield Wednesday.

However, Nketiah has still yet to start a game for the Whites, and came on in the 77th minute at Deepdale.

He has only ever played a maximum of 45 minutes, against Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City, though he has scored a total of three league goals. He has also netted two in the Carabao Cup in two appearances.

And fans believe that he could have an impact in north London instead of continuing to sit on the bench under Marcelo Bielsa.

Spurs fans tell Juventus to leave Son Heung-Min alone

Tottenham Hotspur fans have told Juventus to forget about signing Son Heung-Min after Tuttosport claimed that the Serie A side are interested in the South Korea international.

The Italian giants are said to have sent scouts to watch the Spurs winger, as well as Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Mohamed Salah, during the club’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Indeed, Juve are reported to be preparing for the summer already, with Son said to be among their potential targets.

Son joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen and has been a prolific presence ever since.

The 27-year-old has scored 72 goals in 200 appearances for the club and netted 20 in 2018/19 in all competitions.

Fans, perhaps unsurprisingly, are adamant that he is a vital member of the squad and that a sale cannot be considered under any circumstances.

Son has a contract that runs until 2023, having put pen to paper on an extension in 2018.

Liverpool’s Adam Lallana displays his versatility against Aston Villa

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

If Liverpool win the Premier League title this season, their match against Aston Villa on Saturday could be remembered as a pivotal moment on their way to that eventual success.

With four minutes left on the clock, the Reds were 1-0 down due to Mohamed Trezeguet’s goal for the hosts in the first half. However, Andrew Robertson equalised before Sadio Mane put his head on the line to nod in the winner in the fourth minute of injury time.

Watch the moment Adam Lallana broke United hearts at Old Trafford in the video below…

The victory restores their six-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table, with the two facing off next Sunday in a clash that will have huge implications for the title race.

In this match against the Villans, Adam Lallana was deployed by Jurgen Klopp in a defensive midfield position, which was just the second time the former Southampton man has played there throughout his career according to Transfermarkt. However, the 31-year-old excelled against the Midlands outfit.

A player renowned for his playmaking ability managed five tackles at the weekend, which was better than any of his teammates. He also prevailed in an impressive seven of the nine ground duels he contested as well, with him winning more than any other player on the pitch.

But Lallana, who was signed in 2014 for £25m, was not restricted by his deeper role and continued to contribute going forward. He landed 88% of his attempted passes – only two starters from either side managed more – whilst he also created three chances for his side.

When the 34-time England international left the field after 84 minutes, he should have been happy with his day’s work. In an unfamiliar position, he flourished and showcased his versatility.

Considering the front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are indispensable cogs in the system, Lallana will naturally struggle to play his way into the starting XI but his performance against Villa proved that he may yet have a route in.

Against Dean Smith’s team, we may have seen the birth of a new Lallana.

Leeds striker Ryan Edmondson isn’t trusted, claims Noel Whelan

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

With Eddie Nketiah picking up an injury that will apparently see him out of action for three weeks it seemed as if it would be time for Ryan Edmondson to get an opportunity in the first-team.

However, one former Leeds United player believes that the teenager isn’t trusted by Marcelo Bielsa, and he also states that he should be looking for a way out of the club in January.

What’s been said then?

Speaking to Football Insider, Noel Whelan gave his view on Edmondson’s current situation.

“I would think he’s almost certain to go on loan in January if he remains out of the squad. He will want to go on loan, as he will feel ready for senior football.

“He’s been banging in the goals for the Under-23s, but there comes a time when you out-grow that level and need to play against professionals.

“Edmondson doesn’t seem to be making any headway and it’s telling he wasn’t even on the bench against QPR when Eddie Nketiah pulled out. Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t trust him.”

We mastered the trick in the video below in 8 attempts… could you do better?

Absolutely right

Whelan has hit the nail on the head with this one.

If Edmondson isn’t at a level where Bielsa feels he can trust him yet, then he must go and prove himself out on loan.

He’s done pretty much all he can to make his case with the U23s as he netted 20 goals for the youth team last season, but if the Argentine still doesn’t want to use him after that, it seems that getting some senior experience elsewhere is the right thing to do.

It might seem harsh given the 18-year-old scored a hat-trick for the senior side in pre-season against Tadcaster Albion. However, if he can’t get into the squad even when there’s just one fit centre-forward, it’s a damning indictment of how much Bielsa doesn’t rate him.

A successful loan spell could be exactly what the teenager needs to show Bielsa that he can trust him.

Even that might not be enough, however.

Mauricio Pochettino needs to fix Harry Kane’s form

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Harry Kane’s form has been sliding to the point where it has become a worry for Tottenham Hotspur.

On the chalkboard

The England international remains an elite calibre striker with a genuinely exceptional scoring record.

After a quiet start to the season, he has still scored 10 goals in 15 outings in all competitions.

Yet his statistics point to a player who is struggling.

Per WhoScored, he averages 2.7 shots per game, 0.7 key passes, 0.5 dribbles, two dispossessions and 2.4 unsuccessful touches, while his passing accuracy is a mere 69.1%.

Compare that with last season: He averaged 3.6 shots per game, 1.1 key passes, 1.4 dribbles, 1.6 dispossessions, 2.9 unsuccessful touches and a passing accuracy of 73.1%.

The season prior is even starker; in 2017/18 Kane averaged five shots per game, 0.9 key passes, 1.3 dribbles, 1.6 dispossessions and 1.7 unsuccessful touches. His passing accuracy was 71.2%.

This is a decline. In 2017/18, a season in which he netted 30 Premier League goals, one sees a single-minded striker who is always looking to hit the back of the net. In 2018/19, his game is slightly more rounded, as he looks to bring others into play, while his passing accuracy also improved.

This season, though, he seems caught between a rock and a hard place. He doesn’t shoot as much as he used to, he rarely runs with the ball and he loses the ball regularly. Combine that with poor passing accuracy and it adds up to a headache for manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Bring him into the game

The Spurs boss has to find a way to bring Kane into play.

Examine his match statistics thus far this season. He has attempted over 20 passes three times. His average passes per game number is just 16.5.

At his nadir, he completed just 50% of the passes he attempted in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal. The conclusion? Seven accurate passes.

Now, this is not to say that he should be dropping deeper and upping that number, quite the opposite.

Pochettino needs to construct his attack around Kane’s strengths because, at the moment, Spurs are merely accentuating his weaknesses.

Yes, he is still scoring goals, but he is toiling when he is not shooting and it is not helpful to the team.

Against Sheffield United at the weekend, as Spurs drew 1-1, Kane didn’t make a tackle, an interception or complete a dribble. He had two shots on goal but didn’t score and attempted 17 passes with an accuracy of 58.8%.

Kane remains an elite striker and his record speaks for itself but he needs some help.

Pochettino needs to find a way to surround him with the support he requires in order to get back to the lean, hungry striker he once was.

The stats prove that Kane can do it if he is given the tools; it is his manager’s challenge to source them.

Tom Davies, Mason Holgate hailed by Everton supporters

A number of Everton fans have lavished praise on midfielder Tom Davies and defender Mason Holgate for their recent contributions to the team.

Holgate only featured in one of Everton’s first eight matches of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign but has now started the last three.

Davies, meanwhile, has now started the team’s last four in the league.

Both played the full 90 minutes against Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon, where Marco Silva’s side ran out 2-1 winners to pick up a much-needed three points.

And many Everton fans have taken to social media to lavish praise on the duo.

Neither were in Silva’s first-choice XI in the opening weeks of the campaign but it is funny how quickly things can change, particularly in football.

And it will now be difficult for the head coach to leave the youngsters out moving forward.

Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips isn’t ready for an England call-up after Higginbotham claims

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Another international break has been and gone, but we’re still not out of the woods when it comes to discussions about national teams dominating the headlines.

For a change, Leeds United fans have something to ponder after England’s latest fixtures as a former Premier League player has tipped one Whites ace for a Three Lions call-up.

What’s been said then?

Danny Higginbotham tipped Kalvin Phillips for an England call-up in a column for The Sun.

“Looking outside the current squad, there are not exactly many English defensive midfielders excelling in the Premier League.” The 40-year-old wrote.

Watch Leeds United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

“But in Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips I see someone who could force his way into Southgate’s reckoning.

“The 23-year-old has been outstanding for Marcelo Bielsa’s side and has a number of really good attributes.

“I like his positional sense, he’s a very good tackler, and his distribution both long and short is fantastic.

“Yes, Phillips has never played in the Premier League. But I don’t have an issue with that at all — there were plenty of clubs in for him over the summer and he would undoubtedly be playing in the top tier now if Leeds hadn’t done everything to keep hold of him.”

Too much too soon

Phillips is certainly good enough to play for England one day, but it’s a little too soon for anyone to be thinking about that just yet.

Higginbotham says that he has no issue with it, but the fact of the matter is that the midfielder has never played in the Premier League, and while he may be considered the best player in the Championship it’s a huge step up.

While some players such as James Maddison and Dan James made the step up to the top-flight with relative ease others such as Tom Cairney struggled with that gulf in class.

Maddison took to English football like a duck to water, creating 100 chances last term while James has contributed to five goals for Man United this season. Cairney, on the other hand, was relegated at the first time of asking with Fulham.

There’s no guarantee that a Championship star will be just as good in the top-flight, and due to the fact that Phillips is unproven at the top level he shouldn’t be considered for England just yet.

Tottenham icon Ledley King welcomes Jose Mourinho to the club

Jose Mourinho is now officially Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager after Mauricio Pochettino left the club on Tuesday night. The Argentine coach has been struggling to get Spurs firing on all cylinders for a while now and seeing how they are currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table with no immediate solutions, this turn of events is not that surprising at all.Watch Tottenham Hotspur Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

But Mourinho will definitely have a tall task on his hands now and bringing the club back to the upper table will surely be a priority for him in the remainder of the ongoing 2019/20 campaign.

And he will be delighted to see some of the legends of the club welcoming him on social media.

Ledley King was one of them as the now-retired 39-year-old posted a message for the Portuguese coach on Twitter.

King spent his whole career at Spurs and has managed to tally a total of 315 games for them, even scoring 12 goals and assisting two under his belt in the process.

Such a big name and an icon of the squad welcoming Mourinho to the team will no doubt be a good starting point for the new coach.

Still, we’ll have to wait and see whether he’ll be able to do his magic with this Spurs team or not.
