'They knew exactly what length to bowl' – Dhoni

‘The variations they used were impressive’ – Dhoni

MS Dhoni admitted that India’s 79-run defeat to Bangladesh would “hurt” and attributed it to a “lack of partnerships”. A chase of 308 was further hampered by the home side’s bowlers extracting greater lift from a sluggish pitch and canny use of variation. In the end, India couldn’t last the 50 overs and slumped to their worst loss to Bangladesh in terms of runs across all ODIs.”I think the variations that they used were pretty impressive,” Dhoni said. “They didn’t bowl 140 kph and a slower one of 115 kph. They mixed up the pace well and also they had more bowlers who got more bounce compared to our fast bowlers.”Bounce, at times on slow wicket, is a harder thing to negotiate because it climbs onto you and still you don’t have enough pace to work around. I felt they used the variations well. And still they knew what was the exact length that was needed to bowl and I felt that was the difference between the fast bowling units.”Mustafizur Rahman, the 19-year-old debutant, took away the bulk of that praise. His offcutters gained just enough purchase to throw the batsmen’s timing off repeatedly. Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed hustled Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan with back of a length deliveries. India’s openers added 95 runs and kept the contest alive, but once it was broken they lost four wickets for 20 runs, and at 115 for 4, the game was slipping away.”Whenever you are chasing 300, the key is partnerships,” Dhoni said. “The bigger the partnerships, the easier it becomes for the middle order, the lower-order batsmen to score the remaining number of runs. I felt we kept losing wickets in the middle. We were not able to get big partnerships which I feel is crucial when you’re looking to chase 300 or 305. Especially on wickets that turn out to be on the slower side because at times you have to take those calculated risk shots which I feel is important.”Bangladesh had no such trouble in their innings. Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal laced 102 runs in 82 balls to set the base while Shakib Al Hasan and Sabbir Rahman contributed 83 in 86 to ensure their highest total against India. Helped along by India’s quicks, who were guilty of pitching the ball too short too often. But according to Dhoni they “bowled to our strengths, but maybe that was not the right length on this wicket”.That Bangladesh used four fast bowlers was a topic of much interest. They were able to get zip with the new ball under lights and rewarded their captain Mashrafe Mortaza’s faith. And Dhoni felt the trend might continue.”If you see the past year, you will see the fast bowlers are the ones that are doing really well,” he said. “They are supported by Shakib who is their leading left-arm spinner and they have also got part-timers who can bowl offspin if needed. Mahmudullah is injured right now. He is not part of the side, so it gives them that liberty of using the fast bowlers and quite a few of them can bat. So still they have a decent batting line-up. You have to see all these factors and I feel that was one of the main reasons you see them featuring more seamers in the coming games.”But did such a comprehensive loss to Bangladesh, who were ranked No. 8 prior to this match dent the morale of the much-fancied Indian side?”It does hurt,” Dhoni said. “But it’s not about what you have done in the past. On that particular day, how well you have played predicts the team that wins and today they played much better cricket than we did.”

Treinei durante a semana, fui relacionado, e quando estou no banco aquecendo o treinador me chama.

O Timão obtém 10% do passe do jogador.

Quero voos ainda maiores – concluiu.

Brad Hodge’s 61 in a 36-ball assault gave Guyana Amazon Warriors an easy 23-run win against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in Basseterre. Rain brought a premature end to the match in the 17th over of the chase, by which time Amazon Warriors were comfortably ahead of the D/L target.Patriots lost their openers within the first four overs after choosing to bat, but were resurrected by Marlon Samuels’ 40-ball 61 – the only score above 20 in the innings. Samuels and Tonito Willett added 54 for the third wicket before Willett holed out at long-off in the 13th over off Marchant de Lange. Samuels then took 16 runs off the remaining four balls of the over, which set a strong platform for the last few overs. Patriots finished well to end with 158 for 6 – 51 coming in the last five overs. In the chase, Amazon Warriors lost Trevon Griffith in the second over for 6. However, Denesh Ramdin counter-attacked with 31 in 15 balls, which included two sixes and three fours, before he was caught behind in the seventh over. Hodge took the attack to Patriots from the outset, while Assad Fudadin, who was playing his second match of the season, dropped anchor with a run-a-ball 43. Patriots couldn’t stop the run-flow as boundaries were hit regularly. An unbeaten 98-run third-wicket stand took Amazon Warriors to 146 for 2 in the 17th over, when the D/L par score was 123.

Fast bowlers Sean Abbott and James Pattinson have been included in the Australia A squad for the team’s upcoming tour of India next month. Both players were called as replacements for Pat Cummins, who was drafted into Australia’s Ashes squad following the retirement of Ryan Harris.Pattinson, whose already truncated 2014-15 season was ended by a hamstring injury in March, will replace Cummins in the one-day squad, while Abbott will take Cummins’ place for the two four-day games. Tasmania seamer Andrew Fekete, who was already a part of Australia A’s four-day squad, has also been placed on stand-by for the one-day matches.”This is an important part of James’ recovery from injury, which has been progressing nicely under the guidance of our medical staff,” national selector Rod Marsh said. “Sean and James are both quality young fast bowlers and we’re pleased to be giving them this opportunity in the challenging conditions of the sub-continent.”Sean is a promising quick and this series will give him further international experience following last year’s tour of the UAE when he made his Australian debut.”Constant injuries have meant that Pattinson, 25, has played just 13 Tests since making his debut in 2011. He last played for Australia in the Cape Town Test against South Africa in March 2014, after which he spent time recovering from a serious back injury. Pattinson eventually made a return to competitive cricket with the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League last year, and also played three Sheffield Shield matches for Victoria in February and March. He is currently in Brisbane playing in a series of practice matches for the National Performance Squad against the National Indigenous Squad.Australia A will play two four-day matches against India A starting July 22 in Chennai, followed by a one-day tri-series also involving South Africa A.Australia A four-day squad: Usman Khawaja (capt), Matthew Wade, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Joe Burns, Andrew Fekete, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Nic Maddinson, Glenn Maxwell, Steve O’Keefe, Gurinder Sandhu, Marcus StoinisAustralia A one-day squad: Usman Khawaja, Matthew Wade, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Cameron Boyce, Joe Burns, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Callum Ferguson, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Chris Lynn, James Pattinson, Gurinder Sandhu, Adam Zampa.

Umar Akmal carries Pakistan to consolation win

Pakistan timed their chase of 151 to perfection as Umar Akmal and Sarfraz Ahmed carried them to a consolation win over Sri Lanka in the final league match of the Asia Cup

The Report by Mohammad Isam in Mirpur04-Mar-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:46

‘We need to back our boys’ – Waqar

The first ball of the match, Mohammad Amir struck Dinesh Chandimal’s pads with a late and quick inswinger, raising hopes of a contest. It panned out, however, into a dead rubber between two sides who made plenty of errors, with Pakistan chasing down 151 with six wickets in hand. The end was farcical, too, as Nuwan Kulasekara dropped a straightforward chance at mid-off from Shoaib Malik, to give away the winning run with four balls to spare.Half the match was dominated by Tillakaratne Dilshan, who scored 75 not out. For the third time in T20Is, Dilshan finished unbeaten after opening the innings, the first opening batsman to do so in the format. His score accounted for half of Sri Lanka’s total of 150 for 4, after he had survived a missed run-out opportunity and two dropped catches.Pakistan timed their chase of 151 almost to perfection, despite losing Mohammad Hafeez early, helped along by cameos from Sharjeel Khan, Sarfraz Ahmed and Umar Akmal.Sharjeel took four boundaries off Dushmantha Chameera in the sixth over, hitting him twice over mid-on, belting one to midwicket and squeezing a four past point. Two overs later, however, he was caught easily at long-on off Dilshan’s bowling for a 24-ball 31 that had five fours and a six. Promoted to No. 3, Sarfraz bridged Sharjeel’s burst with stability in the middle overs before Akmal and Malik added 56 runs for the fourth wicket. Akmal finished with 48 off 37 balls with four fours and two sixes before holing out to Thisara Perera at the long-off boundary with the scores level.Earlier, Dilshan’s innings could have ended when he was on 6, 7 and 64. In the fourth over, Mohammad Nawaz missed a direct hit from cover that could have found the batsman short of his ground. In the next over, Irfan dropped a simple catch running to his right from short fine-leg after Dilshan had top-edged a sweep off Shahid Afridi.Later, in the 19th over, Dilshan top-edged a slog which flew towards Irfan at deep third-man but here, too, the fielder parried the ball down instead of completing the catch. Dilshan made the most of his early reprieves – he opened up after he was dropped the first time and left-arm spinner Nawaz bore the brunt of his attack.Dilshan hammered him down the ground for three fours and a six in the sixth over. That 18-run over got Sri Lanka’s innings up and running, as Dilshan and Chandimal added 110 runs for the first wicket. This was Sri Lanka’s first 100-plus opening stand in T20Is since December 2013 and their third overall. Dilshan has been a common factor in all three partnerships. After the attack on Nawaz, Dilshan used the pace of Wahab Riaz and Irfan to gather fours, and then played a slog and reverse-scoop off Amir. Chandimal tried the scoop once in the 11th over but mostly chose a conventional mode of attack. He got four fours through the covers, two behind the wicket and like Dilshan, struck Nawaz for a straight six.Their partnership was broken in the 15th over when Chandimal pulled straight to Sharjeel at short midwicket, after making 58 runs with seven fours and the six.Amir had an off day after a magnificent first over but, for all his fielding histrionics, it was Irfan who had the best bowling figures with 2 for 18 from his four overs. He was incisive in the 18th over, bowling Chamara Kapugedara and Dasun Shanaka out in the space of three balls.

Edwards 77* takes England Women to semis

Charlotte Edwards’ unbeaten 77 ensured that England controlled proceedings against Pakistan in Chennai to seal a semi-final berth against Australia

Vithushan Ehantharajah27-Mar-2016
ScorecardNot for the first time in a Women’s World T20, England will have to get past Australia for glory. Unlike the last two encounters, however, their showdown this time will not be in a final. On Wednesday in Delhi, they meet in the semis. “Luckily, we have a good record in this tournament outside of finals,” joked Charlotte Edwards.Leading from the front with 77 off 61 balls, Edwards ensured that England controlled proceedings against Pakistan in Chennai to seal their semi-final berth. That control was evident from the very first ball, which Edwards guided through backward point for four. It’s a shot wedded to England’s captain and you would not be surprised if she took it with her when she eventually decides to retire. It was a fitting way for her to become the first player – man or woman – to pass 2,500 international T20 runs. For the second time in succession, Edwards and Tammy Beaumont put on a half-century stand for the first wicket. Beaumont, in the process, set a new career best of 37.England’s approach in this World T20, encouraged by the coach Mark Robinson, has been to target the Powerplay. It culminated in 55 for 0 today – their highest ever score in the first six overs. It is also the sixth highest Powerplay total in the women’s game.”We’ve got good stats to show if you win the Powerplay in women’s cricket you generally win the game,” Edwards said. “Mark has told us to go out there and play to our own game, play to our strengths and I think we’ve done that. It’s not been reckless at all, I think it’s been really calculating cricket and that’s been pleasing for me.”While Beaumont, the aggressor, went to a leading edge for the first of Nida Dar’s three wickets, Edwards, the rock, stayed for the duration. There were the typical elements to the knock: the off side play when the field was up, the late running of the ball to third man and sweeps when the fielders were spread. But there were also aspects that are normally alien to her play. Aspects that increase her value in the second half of an innings. She was keen to push the field, something that was evident in the penultimate over when she ran three twos before clubbing a four down the ground and immediately signalling for a drink. Then, to the second ball of the 20th, she walked across her stumps and flicked seamer Asmavia Iqbal over her shoulder for four.Edwards’ presence at the other end helped stifle another middle order collapse, with Sarah Taylor going for an eight-ball duck during a top-order cluster of three wickets for 21 runs. Danni Wyatt stuck with her captain for a busy 17 to ensure a testing target. It meant Pakistan needed to reach their target of 149 in 18.1 overs to qualify for the semi-finals at England’s expense. They fell well short of both win and qualification. In hindsight, this match itself was a formality.Laura Marsh took three wickets in an easy England win•Getty Images/ICC

While Georgia Elwiss came in for a poorly Heather Knight, England took the opportunity to bring in Laura Marsh for Becky Grundy. Marsh, who met up with the squad on Friday after being called up as a replacement for Danielle Hazell, was given the opportunity to get overs under her belt in her first T20I since February 2015. Four overs of unerring off-breaks from a medium pacer’s action brought her career-best figures of three for 12.Marsh had initially arrived in Delhi while the rest of the squad were still engaged in Dharamsala. With the England men’s team training nearby, Robinson asked assistant coach Paul Farbrace if she could have a training session with him. Farbrace was happy to oblige. In the grand scheme of things, it’s a small gesture but perhaps one that highlights the benefit of having a women’s head coach with such strong contacts.Only four Pakistan players made it into double figures, as England’s pace-off-the-ball attack, led by Marsh, induced mistake after mistake to leave Pakistan in a heap of 80 all out.It was always going to be a tough ask and, against a side who are tightening up in the field, the life was slowly squeezed out of this match. England saved their best, most complete group stage performance for their final match. In the business, they call that peaking at the right time.As for Australia, “We’re looking forward to it,” Edwards said. “We know when you come to a World T20 you have to beat everyone and we’re looking forward to Wednesday. We’ve got a good record away from World Cup finals so we’ll be holding on to that, and we’ve got a lot of belief in the group. It’s going to be one hell of a semi-final.”
