'Not been easy to concentrate' – Mathews

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews admitted that it has been difficult to focus on the cricket following the death of Phillip Hughes

Andrew Fidel Fernando28-Nov-2014There will be tragic symmetry when Sri Lanka take the field for the second ODI in Colombo, as many on social media have noted. When a 20-year-old Phillip Hughes struck his maiden Test hundred in Durban, he had worn a black armband following the Lahore terror attack on the Sri Lanka team. On Saturday, in Colombo, Sri Lanka will wear black armbands for Hughes.Sri Lanka and England had spoken of abandoning the second match, but had eventually decided to play it, in tribute. Though, it has been tough to focus on the cricket, Angelo Mathews said.Angelo Mathews – “Everyone had a tough day. Even though he’s an Australian, he’s our mate. When you lose a friend of yours, it is very difficult to go through”•Getty Images

“It hasn’t really been easy to concentrate,” Mathews said. “That was the first thing I heard when I woke up last morning, and I had a very tough day going through it. Everyone had a tough day. Even though he’s an Australian, he’s our mate. When you lose a friend of yours, it is very difficult to go through. I hope and pray that we never ever hear of such an incident again in cricket, or any other sport.”Hughes had enjoyed playing Sri Lanka, going by his scores. In Tests, he had hit 435 runs at an average of 43.50 against Sri Lanka, who were also on the receiving end of both his ODI hundreds. Hughes had also made a second-innings 126 at the SSC, when Sri Lanka were pushing for a series-leveling win, in 2011. But although Hughes kept Sri Lanka in the field for longer than they would have liked, the team remembered Hughes as a “cheerful and friendly person”, Mathews said.”Phil Hughes was a very humble guy, and a fighter when it comes to cricket,” he said. “His loss will be a big one for the game. He played his first ODI against us. If I remember right, he hit a hundred in that match. He was a very good player, and a thorough gentleman. Our whole team conveys our condolences and sadness to his family, loved ones, teammates, Australian fans, and fans around the world.”Although Hughes’ death has brought the danger inherent in cricket into sharp focus, Mathews said his team would seek to play as they have always done. Hughes had been hit by a bouncer in a part of the neck not protected by helmets, and sustained an injury that has only been seen around 100 times in recorded medical history.”We never expect something like this to happen when you bowl a bouncer. Even when the bowlers are aggressive, you don’t expect the batsman to get hurt. It’s just the game of cricket, and it was an unfortunate incident. There won’t be any thoughts regarding those bouncers. It was an unfortunate incident. All we can do is hope that player safety can improve.”Though Sri Lanka did not lose a teammate in the 2009 attack, even in 2014, players have spoken of ongoing psychological repercussions stemming from that ordeal. Mathews said there was little Hughes’ team-mates could do, but gradually work through their emotions. “It’s not easy to get over things like this. You’ve got to move on, but it will take a lot of time to recover.”

Setembro agitado no Botafogo: fim do primeiro turno e sequência pesada

O primeiro compromisso do Botafogo será no próximo domingo, dia 8, contra o Atlético-MG, pela 18ª rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro, no Estádio Nilton Santos.

08/09 – Botafogo x Atlético-MG – 16h – Estádio Nilton Santos (18ª rodada)
14/09 – Ceará x Botafogo – 21h – Arena Castelão (19ª rodada)
21/09 – Botafogo x São Paulo – 11h – Estádio Nilton Santos (20ª rodada)
25/09 – Bahia x Botafogo – 17h – Arena Fonte Nova (21ª rodada)

Pankaj eyes Ranji qualification

After Rajasthan and Maharashtra both turned their Ranji campaigns around with big wins in the previous round, Pankaj Singh and Rohit Motwani, the two captains, conceded that seamers were likely to play a key role ahead of the teams’ Group B clash in Pune

Pankaj Singh – “The game against Punjab was a do-or-die match, because had we lost that one, our only goal would have been to avoid relegation”•PTI

The Maharashtra Cricket Association’s cricket ground off the Mumbai-Pune expressway keeps all its plastic fold-up seats wrapped under thick plastic covers to avoid de-colouration. Not many grounds take the upkeep of their spectator seats that seriously. Those covers work perfectly to keep the sun and rain out, but do not have much chance against the heavy leather ball repeatedly thudding into it.The batsmen from both Rajasthan and Maharastra regularly smacked the spinners into the stands from their respective practice pitches either side of the main strip, almost as if each hit was a pre-match show of strength. Or maybe both teams realised that spinners would present the best run-scoring opportunities on a pitch that preserved its olive-green appearance a day before their crucial Group B match.Pankaj Singh and Rohit Motwani, the two captains, both conceded that seamers were likely to play a key role in Pune, and with the weather predicted to hold the chill throughout the week, spin is not expected to come into the picture till about the last day. Rajasthan wouldn’t mind as the conditions do not appear too far-off from the ones in Jaipur, where they handed a heavy nine-wicket loss to a strong Punjab side to revive their sagging Ranji campaign.”The game against Punjab was a do-or-die match, because had we lost that one, our only goal would have been to avoid relegation,” Pankaj said. “But after playing positively in that match, we are alive in the tournament again. That was the match in which we had to move forward.”You always want to start the season by thinking about knockouts, but a practical way of thinking is to say don’t get relegated,” he said. “It’s the first time in four-five years that we are playing without any professionals in our support staff and before the season, a lot of things happened. So the first goal for me as a captain was to avoid relegation.”Now things are looking a little up with the kind of cricket we are playing and we have a chance of qualification for knockouts. We have to take it match by match from here. If we do well here, we can start thinking about qualifying.”Like Rajasthan, Maharashtra had a poor start to the season, including a loss against Punjab at home, after the highs of last year. Till last week, both teams were lingering near the bottom of the Group B table, at the seventh and eighth places. But just like Rajasthan, Maharashtra turned it around by ruthlessly beating Saurashtra by an innings in Rajkot. That win was built upon a solid team batting performance and Akshay Darekar’s ten-wicket match haul. Spin may be pushed to the back bench in this game, conceded Motwani, but added that Maharashtra’s seam bowlers have been picking up wickets and were excited to play a more central role in the home game. “Fallah was my Man of the Match,” Yuvraj Singh had said after the bowler had rattled Punjab with 8 for 38. Punjab won that game by three wickets, but Motwani said the morale was on a high after the Saurashtra win.

New Zimbabwe regime aims high

While the big boys of world cricket are bellowing about their hopes of winning the World Cup the little guys are contemplating their chances too. Just not for World Cup. Zimbabwe are targetting 2023

While the big boys of world cricket are bellowing about their hopes of winning the World Cup – South Africa in the literal sense, Australia with dominance in a triangular series at home, New Zealand by breaking records – the little guys are contemplating their chances too. Just not for World Cup.”By 2023 we want to be contending for the World Cup. That’s the aim,” Alastair Campbell, Zimbabwe Cricket’s newly-appointed managing director said. “It’s not an aim that’s unrealistic. It’s achievable. We’ve got a long-term view on this.”Campbell was given the organisation’s top job at the beginning of the year and put in charge of healing an ailing operation left embarrassed by the team being blanked in Bangladesh late last year. The former captain, who was previously the convener of selectors and in charge of the cricket committee, will oversee everything from finances to future cricketers and has put an eight-year plan in place to do that, with an eye on that year’s World Cup to measure his progress.”This is an executive role. It comes about because the board have found a real need for Zimbabwe cricket to progress in the right direction. After the Bangladesh tour, nobody had a pleasant word to say about Zimbabwe cricket. The results weren’t of the required nature and there has been fall out from that. There is a new coach, a new structure will be put in place and that falls under my plate,” Campbell explained in his first interaction with media on Thursday in Harare.”After this World Cup, we no longer automatically qualify unless we are in the top eight. We will have to go to a qualifying tournament and if we don’t qualify, that will have dire consequences for the game in Zimbabwe. So we need to create viable player pathways so that we identify talent and make sure that we are nurturing that talent.”And when we’re talking eight years, guys that are 15, 16 and 17 now those are going to be our World Cup contenders then, so that’s where the effort needs to be spent. We need to make sure our under-19 and under-17 sides are competitive and are getting access to the most professional coaching available. That’s easier said than done because a lot of that stuff takes money.”That is the one thing ZC have struggled for more than anything else. Their cash-flow problems have included mismanagement of an ICC loan, two crippling player strikes in as many seasons over non-payment and they remain knee-deep in debt. But Campbell, who is also an entrepreneur, is looking to change that by creating a more transparent financial model of which they hope investment will form the foundation stone.”My staff and I are going to go out there to local and international corporates and engage them to play a part in development structures,” Campbell said. “But we want to make sure we are not paying lip service to our development structures and there is tangible coaching going on and tangible benefits from the money that is being put in. We need to make sure we are accountable for the funds. It is a big task but we are going to start from square one again and make sure we build up slowly.”After attracting companies such as Stanbic Bank to back their T20 competition, ZC lost significant chunks of sponsorship when the honeymoon period after their Test comeback ended. Zimbabwe’s wider financial crisis was one reason for that, ZC’s own murky finances another and Campbell has promised there will be no repeat of the latter. “Maybe in the past some of the corporates have felt that ZC hasn’t been accountable enough for cash that has been given. We want to say that from now on every dollar you give us, there is some tangible reward and result from that,” he said.Money will go into academies and age-group teams as well as the domestic game. Campbell said ZC would even look into “reopening” the Southern Rocks franchise in Masvingo, which was dissolved at the start of this season, once they have got themselves on stable ground. For now, any money obtained will be spent on coaching but also on developing less technical aspects of the game.”There’s so many things that come into making a good sportsman. Donald Bradman said cricket is 90% mental and we need to nurture that mental side. Too much of that is neglected,” Campbell said. “Everyone thinks that if you hit a thousand balls every day that will make you a good player but if you can’t handle pressure, you’re not able to play on the big stage.”The immediate future presents the biggest stage and although Zimbabwe are not among the candidates who can win the World Cup, Campbell is expecting a certain minimum from them that he hopes will serve as the drawcard for the first investments. “We’re hoping our team can go to the World Cup, do well and be competitive. We’re under no illusion that we need to beat Ireland, we need to beat the UAE but against those other sides we need to be competitive,” he said.”Sometimes it’s the manner in which you lose. That’s what irritated the cricketing public – the way that the team have lost. You want to see them being competitive. If they’re competitive to the last five overs, they’ve had a good game. But if the game is gone in the 30th over and everyone turns off the TV and Zimbabwe have lost, that’s when people get irritated. I hope our guys can go there, take advantage of playing on a world stage and come back with their heads held high because that helps with the commercial side of the game. If you have a team that’s competitive, a team that’s winning some of the time. a team that’s seen to be improving, people are willing to part with their money because they see its nice being associated with a good brand.”But he also allowed himself to dream a little bit about some of the upsets Zimbabwe could pull off. “India are in their pool and they have already been on the road for three months so they will be tired and there’s a sniff there,” he said. “Pakistan are unpredictable. We’ve beaten them before, we can beat them again.” Everyone, even the boss, can dream a little.

Who will be the World Cup's newest first-time finalist?

Both New Zealand and South Africa are no strangers to World Cup semi-finals, but neither has ever made it through to the biggest game in cricket yet

The Preview by Andrew McGlashan23-Mar-2015Match factsMarch 24, 2015

Big PictureNine World Cup semi-finals, zero World Cup finals. New Zealand and South Africa are no strangers to the last four, but neither has ever experienced the ultimate shoot-out. That will change for one of the teams as Melbourne beckons for the winner.Six months ago if you had asked for a prediction of this fixture it is likely that South Africa would have been favoured. Now the hosts can rightly be considered the smart money. At the very least, it is the too-close-to-call match-up that the contests should be at this stage of the tournament. The four best teams are in the semi-finals.New Zealand are on the most glorious of runs: nine ODI wins and counting. Each match of this tournament has thrown up new heroes: Brendon McCullum, Corey Anderson, Tim Southee, Kane Williamson, Daniel Vettori and, latterly, Martin Guptill can be known as the Super Six, while they have had more than a little help from their team-mates.South Africa’s tournament has not been anywhere near as seamless with the notable group-stage defeats against India and Pakistan, the latter of those at Eden Park. However, their overwhelming performance in the quarter-final against Sri Lanka – their first World Cup knockout victory – has ensured that, at least for a short while, AB de Villiers can experience something his predecessors have not. Winning a crunch game. But now comes another one. The teams met in the knockout stages four years ago – the quarter-final – where New Zealand won by 49 runs in Dhaka and the contest boiled over when de Villiers was run out. The feats in Sydney will not mean a jot if they cannot progress further. The build-up to this match has been starkly different for each side. South Africa’s quarter-final was the first to be played which has given them time to settle back into Auckland, so much so that they opted not to train on Monday – they did the same the day before the Sri Lanka match. New Zealand have played, travelled, prepared and must now play again. It is far removed from the week-long build-ups that have almost become agonising during the second half of their group campaign. As well as being the last match for either side at the tournament, this will also be New Zealand’s last match as a host nation. The country has staged a wonderful event. They deserve a memorable encounter with which to sign-off.Form guideNew Zealand WWWWW (last five matches, most recent first)
South Africa WWLWWIn the spotlightMove aside Brendon McCullum and Trent Boult. There is a new hero in town. Martin Guptill rewrote the record books in Wellington, but now he must refocus having had barely any time to come down from the high of his unbeaten 237. That could be both a positive and a negative; he will never have felt better, but the expectations are now huge. He also has an awful record against South Africa: an average of 11.50 in 11 ODIs, including two ducks and seven single-figure scores. The fifth bowler has long vexed South Africa, but they appear to have bitten the bullet and played to their strengths with seven batsmen and four frontline bowlers. That means the role of JP Duminy is crucial and he performed it to perfection – or, in fact, probably better than de Villiers could have dreamt of – against Sri Lanka by firstly restricting the scoring then bagging one of more unnoticed hat-tricks. However, against a New Zealand batting line-up that does not hold back, he should be tested. And so should South Africa’s tactics.Teams newsAdam Milne’s heel injury, which has ruled him out of the tournament, means an enforced change for New Zealand. It would be quite a turnaround if Matt Henry was rushed straight in, but it is a possibility after Mitchell McClenaghan’s poor outing against Bangladesh and the fact that Kyle Mills is not a like-for-like replacement.New Zealand (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Brendon McCullum (capt), 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Grant Elliott, 6 Corey Anderson, 7 Luke Ronchi (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Matt Henry/Kyle Mills, 11 Trent BoultSouth Africa’s one decision seemingly rests on Vernon Philander v Kyle Abbott. Abbott helped set the tone against Sri Lanka but Philander’s extra batting is also valued. De Villiers has a minor throat infection and didn’t train on Sunday, but said the entire squad is fit and available.South Africa (probable) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 AB de Villiers (capt), 5 Rilee Rossouw, 6 David Miller, 7 JP Duminy, 8 Dale Steyn, 9 Vernon Philander/Kyle Abbott, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Imran TahirPitch and conditions”Players can get sucked in by the short boundaries and scores have tended to be lower,” Grant Elliott said of Eden Park, earlier this week. The surface is rarely anything but true, but offers encouragement through pace and bounce – a facet both teams possess. McCullum expected less swing than the Australia match as conditions are not as humid. Each side also has a quality spinner, too, should it grip. The forecast is a little mixed, but the occasional shower seems to the worst that could happen.Stats and trivia Trent Boult needs two wickets to become New Zealand’s leading bowler at a World Cup, overtaking Geoff Allott’s 21 victims in 1999 Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers have 40 ODI hundreds between them. The likely New Zealand XI has 34 Corey Anderson needs three wickets for 50 in ODIs. He currently has the fourth-best strike-rate of a bowler with more than 40 ODI wicketsNew Zealand’s run rate in the mandatory Powerplay overs of 7.54 is easily the best among all teams in this tournament. Australia are next with a rate of 6.16. South Africa are fifth with a run rate of 4.95Quotes”Any game you play, some get more nervous than others but the general feeling is that we can’t wait to get out there and test our skills against a very good South African team and in a crunch game. The way we dealt with the expectations of the last game should hold is us in reasonable stead.”
“It would be silly to focus too much on the cricket they’ve played. They’ve played really well but if we play to our full potential, no one is going to stop us. I need to make sure they are confident mentally and fresh physically.”
