Why missed chances cost so much more in football

‘If we had just scored when we had that chance it would have been so different.’ How often do you hear that after a game of football? Nearly every time. It is either a manager, a player or a pundit bemoaning a missed chance – not to mention the media and fans. It may seem an exaggeration to say this, but one chance can change a game, and make all the difference, and whilst I am not in the business of criticising someone for missing a chance during a game, no one can underestimate just how crucial that goal could have been.

Long have Arsenal been accused of passing more times than a cast member of TOWIE gets a spray tan, and failing to score when it counts, and before RVP became the MVP, their lack of clinical finishing cost them.

Anyone with a vague notion of intelligence – and I don’t mean MENSA here, just Wayne Rooney level – you know reading ok, grunting occasionally, that kind of thing – can point out to you after a game where a chance that could have made it all so different was missed.

In the only big game Real Madrid will ever play in a season if you listen to some English people – El Clasico – at 1–0 up, they had a golden chance to go two clear, and that would have made everything oh so different. Instead the chance was spurned and Barca went straight down the other end to equalise. The game was turned in the blink of an eye, and it was clinical finishing down one end, and the lack of it down the other that did that.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’left’]

Too many missed chances can see heads dropping and the overall mentality of the team dipping. Not to mention the opposition will be aware of the fact that if they manage to go a goal to the good, they are probably safe and there is little chance of being pegged back due to the mental issues created from being tagged as a team who can’t finish.

Likewise this can happen to an individual player – the number of strikers who down the years have gone through a poor run of form and let this affect them, subsequently struggling to  pick both themselves and their form up – they can still have the touch and the movement but simply cannot hit a barn door – Torres is the prime example here, and it is a long time before the player can forget the multiple or in Nando’s case the million missed chances playing over and over in his head.

Whether it be a team or a player who is suffering because of missed chances and a lack of clinical finishing,  it is not just that one game and three points it can cost. It is easier said than done for a player to put these things out of their head, and a complex can develop affecting the team and the individual for a long time to come should they let it.

All too often people criticise players for being lazy and not doing anything except be in the right place and the right time to score goals – Van Nistelrooy being a prime example – but I would take a player who stuck the ball in the back of the net every day of the week over one who wasn’t a clinical finisher and cost the team not only goals but points to boot.

Liverpool FC’s top TEN ‘Cult Heroes’ of all time?

The trials and tribulations of Liverpool Football Club over the past few decades has certainly meant that the club has had its fair share of players that have adorned cult hero status. But what is a ‘cult’ hero though? It’s a difficult thing to define, but more often than not, it’s a player that rarely meets expectations yet is adored by the terraces for the rare occasions that he reminds us that he’s still a professional footballer. Full-blooded commitment to the cause, eccentric characters and the ability to do something unexpectedly and inexplicably out of character in its importance are often essential ingredients in making up a cult hero.

Here are a list of 10 that plied their trade for Liverpool at one time or another in no discernable order. If there is anyone that you think is more deserving of a place on this list than the ones that I’ve chosen? Post your comments below.

Evra curses United’s injury woes

Patrice Evra has bemoaned Manchester United’s injury list, with nine first-team players currently unavailable for selection.

The French defender is the Premier League champions’ captain in the absence of Nemanja Vidic, and he has applauded the Red Devils’ squad for pulling through with a lot of senior players on the treatment table.

“I don’t know what is happening, I think someone is doing some voodoo on us,” he is reported to have said in Mirror Football.

“It’s amazing how many injuries we’ve had. I see many teams complaining about the injuries they have but, for us, it has been amazing.

“To lose a player like Nemanja Vidic for the season… yet we’ve coped with that.

“I think to get so close to Manchester City, given the injuries we have had, shows we have really good spirit in the team.

“That’s the most important thing and that’s the culture of the club – no matter what happens, we don’t like to have excuses.

“I just say ‘Well done’ to every player but the job is not finished. The most important part is still to come,” he concluded.

Hatem Ben Arfa wants a run

Newcastle winger Hatem Ben Arfa has stated that he was glad to get a rare start against Arsenal on Monday night, and is eyeing a regular place in the team.

The France international attacker has suffered with long-standings injuries since moving to Tyneside, but scored the Toon’s opener against Arsene Wenger’s men on Monday night’s 2-1 defeat.

Ben Arfa was disappointed with losing the game, but from a personal perspective wants to play on a more regular basis.

“It was a good goal from me, but we lost, so it doesn’t mean anything,” he told The Sun.

“I am very disappointed and in the next game, we have to win. We have 10 games left now and we have to be prepared to achieve something at the end of the season.

“I was very happy to start and I am very happy to be on the pitch. I hope to do much more for the team when I am on the pitch. I am doing everything I can.

“I want to start games — every player wants that. Now I start it is good, I hope I keep going to play more and more for the team between now and the end of the season,” he confessed.

Meanwhile, Geordie boss Alan Pardew is hopeful that Cheik Tiote will be fit to face Norwich this weekend.

“Cheick had cramp,” Pardew told the Evening Chronicle.

“We had no subs left, and we were losing bodies. Demba Ba, for example, could hardly move.

“We’re just hoping it was a bit of cramp,” he concluded.

The Premier League ‘Let Down’ XI This Season

Funny isn’t it; build a burgeoning reputation for yourself as a footballer and there is no going back in many ways. What follows impressive performances is usually expectation and when you fail to deliver such faultless or outstanding displays, the football public is out to questioningly shrug their shoulders and ponder ‘just where is that player of old’?

A number of players will probably look back on the 2011/12 campaign with no real essence of fondness; a few heroic displays here and there but an overall feeling of what could have been or regret they didn’t compete as they could or maybe should have. Some usually outstanding performers have flattered to deceive coinciding with managerial changes, some have following an anticipated summer transfer and some have simply because the pressure might just be too much.

For the next eleven pros, they might secretly be taking a look at themselves in the mirror this summer, reluctantly accepting that they need to do better next time round. Modern football is impatient and there is no time to stand still; instead players have to stand up and be counted more than ever before in an increasingly demanding and enduring division. So here are the eleven Premier League ‘let downs’ this season.

Louis Van Gaal lined for Liverpool role

Louis van Gaal is being lined up as Liverpool’s next sporting director, and will work closely with the new manager, The Guardian reports.

The Merseyside club are reportedly set to change their management structure, with the experienced Dutchman set for a role upstairs at Anfield.

Liverpool have been eager to bring in an experienced football man in a director capacity, after the sacking of Damien Comolli in April.

It is believed that Van Gaal is keen on a position with the Premier League side, and the announcement of his appointment could spark the arrival of a number of new faces at Anfield.

Liverpool are also still looking for a new manager to replace Kenny Dalglish, who was sacked by the Fenway Sports Group after a disappointing Premier League campaign in 2011-12.

Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp, Swansea’s Brendan Rodgers and Ajax’s Frank de Boer have turned down the opportunity to speak with the Premier League club, whilst Andre Villas Boas, Roberto Martinez and a raft of other names are still thought to be in consideration.

Chelsea lead chase for £6m Inter ace

Chelsea are thought to be the frontrunners to sign Inter right-back Maicon, according to The Daily Mail.

The Brazil international only has one year to run on his current deal with the San Siro club, and the Serie A side are thought to be keen to offload him to lower their wage bill.

Real Madrid were initially believed to be interested in the South American full-back, but have baulked at Inter’s £6 million valuation of the 30-year-old.

With Jose Mourinho’s men out of the reckoning, Chelsea are ready to launch a bid for Maicon, who they see as a replacement for Jose Bosingwa.

The Portuguese full-back left Stamford Bridge on a free transfer earlier this summer, with Mathieu Debuchy also being speculated as a possible target for Roberto Di Matteo’s men.

However, the France international is also subject of interest from Newcastle, as a move away from Lille seems likely this summer.

Is Football About Winning?

Lionel Messi has turned his nose up to teams that solely play for the purpose of victory. The Argentinian forward believes that football should only be about the fun of it and not winning. But surely football is about winning? Why do teams sign the best players and fight for the title every season if they’re just playing for the fun of it? Take Manchester City winning the Premier League title over Manchester United last season, that last day, no one could have ever imagined what happened prior that day, but it turned out to be one of the best Premier League seasons of all time because of the competition involved. Is that not why people play competitive sports? To win? Or have I got it all wrong?

The iconic 24 year old has remarked that “Football is a game, I’m trying to have fun on the pitch, always just to play.” Arguably the best footballer in the world has uttered those words all football fans dread to hear ‘Football is just a game’. In a literal sense, yes football is just a game but mentally football is much more than just a game. Its a business and to some fans football is their biggest passion. We weep, risk relationships, forge lifelong relationships and walk around feeling 10ft tall all because of 22 sweating men. It’s difficult to understand how a world class player like Messi considers football as just a game after being named 2012’s highest paid footballer with massive earnings this year of a whopping £27.5m. It is understandable that he plays football for the fun of it, but surely he can’t consider it as just a game?

Messi tried to reiterate that he would rather play well than to win, and that winning is not everything in football. Okay it’s not everything, but is still a huge aspect of the game. “For them, it’s more important to win than to play well” but in competitive football, winning a game is the most important isn’t it? Thats how you become the best. Why do we have various competitions throughout the game if it’s not about winning? The FA Cup, The Carling Cup, Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, Champions League and Europa League are all examples of external competitions that teams compete in to win a trophy prize not to mention international competitions. Messi must not have cared or worried when he missed that penalty for Barcelona in last year’s Champions League semi-final against Chelsea, because at least he was having fun.

Winning does matter in football, it’s the whole reason why it is a competitive sport. Teams win to win titles and promotion and teams win to avoid relegation it works both ways. But maybe when you are the best player in the world playing for one of the best teams in the world you don’t have to worry about winning. Because Messi is naturally talented and Barcelona have a squad of quality players so it’s natural for them to win and when they don’t, it hardly plays an effect on their position.
