Robbie Neilson reckons right-back George Baldock can be a success at Celtic if he moves there this summer, as reported by The Daily Record.

What’s he said?

As reported by The Daily Mail this week, the Hoops have opened talks on a potential deal for the player ahead of the new season.

Neilson was Baldock’s manager for a short time when they were both at MK Dons, before a move to Sheffield United for the defender in 2017.

He’s able to give good insight into how the player might fit in at Celtic and the Scottish game, currently plying his trade as Dundee United boss and having managed Hearts in the past.

Neilson is a big fan of the Sheffield United man and feels his attacking ambition could make him a hit at Celtic Park.

As quoted by The Daily Record, he explained:

“George was a terrific player for me at MK Dons. I was gutted when he had to sell him.

“I was desperate to keep him but the chairman did the deal that saw him move to Sheffield United. He had to go and that was one of the biggest disappointments of my spell as MK Dons manager.

“My time with George was very brief but it was great while it lasted. He was a star in that MK Dons team.

“He is a very athletic player, has a superb attitude and works really hard at his game. He is a very good footballer and he would fit in well at Celtic.

“George’s biggest strength is he possesses real quality going forward. He is also very competitive, which is another attribute I’m sure the Celtic supporters will like about him.”

The right profile

Neilson’s assessment of Baldock certainly does sound exciting for Celtic fans, who have been craving a more dynamic option to Mikael Lustig at right-back for months now.

If he indeed does possess that quality moving forward with the ball then he’ll be well on his way to being a successful Hoops signing.

Celtic are a team that dominate possession and often have the opposition penned into their own box. That usually gives the full-backs great opportunities to find space and combine with wingers and if Baldock already relishes that kind of action then he could be the perfect fit.

At 26 years of age he is also coming into his prime and that’s what Neil Lennon needs this summer – hungry players in their prime who can help deliver trophy success.

According to Le10sport, Aston Villa have made a €10m (£8.9m) bid for Brentford playmaker Said Benrahma, who enjoyed an excellent season with the Bees in 2018/19.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Villans seem keen to bolster their squad following their return to the Premier League and have already been linked with a number of targets.

Dean Smith’s side have already completed the signing of Jota – formerly of Brentford – in a swap deal for Gary Gardner, and have been linked with a move for Celta Vigo frontman Maxi Gomez after Villa scout Juanfran raved about the Uruguayan.

23-year-old Benrahma scored 11 goals and recorded 17 assists for Brentford last season, putting in a number of excellent performances which have clearly caught the attention of top-flight clubs such as Villa.

More sensible than Maxi Gomez

As good as Gomez is, he has been linked with the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham in recent weeks and should certainly be left alone from a newly promoted team’s viewpoint.

The 22-year-old hit 13 goals and recorded five assists last term, but he has a £43.5m release clause in his contract which should definitely put Villa off.

Additionally, the fact that he has already proven himself and as such has been linked with moves to Champions League clubs should be a warning sign to Villa that, even if they do land him, he will be using them as a stepping stone.

While Benrahma is a completely different kind of player, one who operates in support of the front-line rather than leading it, he represent the type of deal Villa should really be looking at this summer.

He comes with much less risk given the cheaper fee and desire to prove himself having only played as high as the Championship in England, so it would be a much more sensible move for a club like Villa who wouldn’t want to risk repeating the mistakes of Fulham.

The Cottagers spent big last summer having won promotion, spending almost £60m combined on Jean Michael Seri and André Frank Zambo Anguissa, before seeing the nucleus of their squad disappear and finishing bottom.

Gomez feels like another trendy name that’s inevitably tempting to go and grab, but Benrahama is a much better fit for the Midlands outfit. Cheaper deals like this should be Villa’s priority.

The months have turned into weeks and now the weeks have turned into days, and Rafa Benitez still doesn’t have a new deal at St James Park. His current deal is set to expire on the final day of June, yet with no breakthrough looking imminent, we’ve had a look at the next potential manager for the famous Northeast club.

Most of the fans clearly wouldn’t want one of the most popular Newcastle managers in years to leave, yet it looks like nothing can be done from this point. The Spaniard has worked wonders in his time with the Geordies, but as we reach crunch time it’s hard not to turn an eye to who could replace him, especially as The Chronicle have picked out the most likely replacements.

According to the trusty Newcastle outlet, the likes of Laurent Blanc, Gennaro Gattuso, Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger and David Moyes are in the running. So, let’s have a look at some of these names.

David Moyes’ time with Sunderland and time spent flopping at Old Trafford too surely make him a calamity option. Meanwhile, Mourinho wouldn’t be given the budget he’s used to at St James Park outside of the takeover his name was linked alongside of late, and it would be impossible to imagine Arsene Wenger lining up a team to try and topple Arsenal (he previously said he’d never manager another English club), the side he spent 22 seasons with as a gaffer.

That leaves just Gattuso and Blanc, and we’re picking out the Frenchman as the man for the job. His last job in management was back in 2016 when he left PSG on mutual consent, and looking back it was a harsh call for him to depart. Meanwhile, Gattuso has recently been let go by AC Milan after failing to secure Champions League football.

It’s hard to see a way in which Blanc wouldn’t be able to adapt to the managerial role at Newcastle United. The former defender picked up the nickname ‘Le Président’ during his time as a player at Marseille for his incredible leadership skills, and those kind of skills will be crucial for any manager set to take up the reigns of Newcastle post-Benitez.

The Frenchman, should he join Newcastle, would only be taking his fourth job in management, and his first in England. After a three year absence from the dugout and at the age of 53-years-old, there’s no reason why the Northeast wouldn’t be an ideal location. FourFourTwo did talk up his ability to promote youngsters, keep egos in check and play an attacking brand of football, traits which would surely stand him in good stead should he walk into a club reeling after Benitez’s departure.

Having won the league with Bordeaux, the World Cup-winning defender has also proven he’s far from a chequebook manager, something that’d stand him in good stead on Tyneside considering the budgets often afforded in the transfer market by Mike Ashley.

If you’re sceptical over Blanc returning to football, just a matter of months ago he was in contention for the vacant Man United job, which Sky Sports reported. We know that Newcastle are far from the club that Man United are, but it could prove a brilliant option for Blanc to get back on his feet with, and whilst following Benitez would be tough, Blanc has the credentials to do so.
