Leeds United supporters have been left absolutely fuming by one Premier League club’s stance over how the current season should end.

Aston Villa CEO Christian Purslow confirmed rumours to talkSPORT on Wednesday morning that they would try to block any rule changes that make it harder for them to defy relegation this term.

One possible route to finishing the season is playing at neutral venues across the country, but some clubs would only agree to that if relegation was off the table – potentially meaning there would be no promotion into the top-flight as a result.

So, this undoubtedly impacts the Whites and their chances of ending a 16-year wait for Premier League football at Elland Road.

Marcelo Bielsa has steered his side to first place in the standings with only nine games remaining. They also hold a seven-point advantage to those in the playoff positions. Only West Brom have been their major challengers to the title all season, too.

Leeds United got back to winning ways on Wednesday with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Swansea City at Elland Road. Goals from Pontus Jansson and Jack Harrison secured the points for the Whites. 

Leeds’ leading goalscorer so far this season, Kemar Roofe, did not lead the line for Marcelo Bielsa’s side against the Swans. Despite having racked up 14 goals in 26 Championship appearances this season, the 26-year-old was deployed in the No. 10 berth, behind Patrick Bamford.

In this playmaking role Roofe struggled against the Welsh outfit. However, Bielsa should persist with this system. The Englishman has the technical ability and vision to effectively operate in this creative role, and has the pace to break forward into goalscoring positions. 

Roofe also has the tenacity, diligence and stamina to press aggressively and defend from the front, as is Bielsa’s preference. 

If he and Bamford can develop a cohesive partnership it would reinvent Leeds’ attack at a crucial time in the campaign, the move would also then be considered a tactical masterstroke on the Argentine manager’s part.

وأتم تصريحاته بالحديث عن هدفه الثاني الذي جاء من خطأ كيبا قائلًا: “لقد كنت محظوظًا وهو كان غير محظوظ، كنت أعرف أنه سيكون لديه خيارات قليلة للتمرير، ولسوء حظه ارتكب خطًأ”.

Reported 2018 Liverpool target Jorginho’s poor run of form continued in Chelsea’s 2-0 FA Cup fifth round defeat against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Monday night, and Reds fans were quick to react to his performance on Twitter.

The Liverpool Echo reported last May that the Merseyside outfit were interested in bringing the Italy international to the Premier League, but at the time Manchester City were the favourites to win the race for the midfielder’s signature.

Of course, the 27-year-old ended up linking up with the manager he worked under at Napoli, Maurizio Sarri, in west London instead, and while he started the season well and earnt pletny of plaudits, his displays have dropped off in recent weeks with his shortfalls off of the ball and defensively coming to the fore – as was the case against the Red Devils.

Liverpool supporters took to social media to have their say on the Italian’s latest showing on Monday, and while one said “Jorginho isn’t fit to lace Wijnaldum’s boots”, another said “he can’t defend and his passing is just average”.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has confirmed that Jack Grealish is in his thinking for Saturday’s Championship clash with Derby County.

What’s the update from Smith?

The Express & Star quotes Smith as saying:

“This gives everyone a boost. It has been well documented that results-wise it has not been good. I don’t put that just down to Jack.

“He’s trained well so is available for selection. Whether he starts or not, we will wait and see but he has trained well enough. He is pushing for a starting spot on Saturday.

“I have said before I believe he is the best player in the league and any team that loses a player of that quality would suffer. We have suffered a little bit through Jack’s loss. It will be nice to have him back.”

Well, Smith has not confirmed that Grealish will start the clash with Derby, but that seems very likely as the club chases a result.

According to the Villa boss, Grealish ‘is the best player in the league’, which will have certainly boosted the midfielder’s ego as he closes on a return.

There is no question that the 23-year-old has been missed and Villa need him to hit the ground running on his return, which will come against Derby, regardless of whether that is from the start or off the bench.

How has Grealish performed this season?

The Englishman played 21 Championship games for Villa earlier this season before picking up a shin injury against West Bromwich Albion in December.

The 5ft 9in ace has contributed two goals and four assists this term and had been in very good form before he picked up his injury.

Indeed, three of the attacker’s assists and two of his goals came in the six games before he was ruled out for what has proved to be 13 league matches thus far.

Villa have not won in the Championship since the end of January, drawing three and losing two of their last five in the second tier.

The importance of the clash with Derby simply cannot be downplayed as Smith’s side chase a playoff position.

And the return of Grealish has come at the perfect time.

Manchester City remain on course for the Premier League title after sneeking a midweek win over West Ham.

However, over the coming few transfer windows, the club are going to have to enter a period of rebuild to some extent, with some of their most gifted players entering their later years and replacements needing to be found by the club’s extensive scouting network.

We here in the Tavern think signing a new attacking midfielder is going to be key, and one man we feel can step in and fill the void ready to be left by David Silva is Italian youngster Nicolo Zaniolo.

The Roma starlet has been quite superb since breaking into the Italian giants’ line up, and he looks to have a massive future ahead of him.

Three goals might not sound too impressive for this campaign, but his overall game seems to be coming on by the week, and he’d be a superb capture if City could indeed pull it off.

His ability on the ball, next to the fact he seems to have a great footballing brain, make him the ideal candidate to come in and take the reins from Silva at City.

Only still 19, Zaniolo has a long way to go, but rest assured, given the time and work on the training pitch, he can develop into one of the world’s finest number 10’s.
