Spurs fans laud Giovani Lo Celso’s display vs RB Leipzig

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a huge blow on Wednesday night as RB Leipzig outclassed them in north London and recorded a thoroughly deserved 1-0 win.

A football legend: Can you get over 80% on this Gazza quiz? Find out now…

It was a poor team performance from the hosts, who looked toothless in the absence of Son Heung-min, but Giovani Lo Celso emerged with plenty of praise.

Lo Celso was the highest-rated player according to SofaScore as he won eight duels (two aerial and six ground), completed three key passes and four successful dribbles on the night.

Needless to say, that display had many of the fans praising his versatility and skill.

Another claimed that he outshines a certain Dele Alli, while one went as far to suggest that the former Real Betis man will eventually outshine club icon Luka Modric…

But unfortunately for the Lilywhites, his performance wasn’t enough to help his team score on the night.

Many of the fans, though, were eager to acknowledge that the Argentine was very much their only shining light against the Bundesliga outfit.

Finally, there were some fans who were quick to compare him to the player he’s effectively replacing.

Christian Eriksen departed for Inter Milan in the January transfer window and Lo Celso was permanently bought by Spurs, and these fans believe that the young Argentine could eventually eclipse the Dane’s legacy at the club.

In other news, many Spurs fans were absolutely buzzing with their youngster’s recent comments on the club…

Sheffield Wednesday’s Kieran Lee is repaying the faith shown in him

Sheffield Wednesday would have been forgiven for releasing Kieran Lee at the end of last season.

Fans were split on what the Yorkshire club should have done when the midfielder’s contract was running down at the end of 2018/19, and you can understand why.

Now, Lee has never been a poor player, and fans had a lot of good things to say about him, but injuries had massively interfered with his progress, making just 17 league appearances throughout his previous two seasons due to some serious injury setbacks.

Amicably, Wednesday showed great faith in their 6 foot 1 midfielder, and they offered him a new one year deal at the end of last term to give him a chance to prove his worth to the club.

Fortunately, Lee has done just that.

The main worry would have been the former Oldham Athletic man’s fitness after his injury-plagued two years, but he’s managed to prove himself on that front with relative ease.

Lee has appeared 20 times for the Owls this season, and he’s only been absent from the matchday squad on three occasions this season.

Away from his ability to stay fit his performances on the pitch have been decent as well.

Two assists isn’t an unreal tally, but Lee has never been a massive creative force setting up just two goals in his previous three seasons.

However, while his assist numbers haven’t been there he’s not been too bad when it comes to creating chances, playing 0.9 key passes per 90.

Defensively, he’s not as strong as he was at the peak of his powers when he was making 3.4 tackles per game back in the 2015/16 season, but 1.5 tackles per game is a more than respectable tally.

Lee had a big task in proving himself at Wednesday again, and while he hasn’t quite rediscovered the form he showed during the club’s playoff seasons, he has done enough to repay the faith shown in him last summer.

The Owls certainly made the right call keeping him at the club rather than releasing him.

In other news, Wednesday may want to hold back on making one huge decision.

West Ham: Rob Green thinks Lukasz Fabianski won’t repeat his mistake at Anfield

Former West Ham and England goalkeeper Rob Green joined Mark Chapman on BBC’s Football Daily podcast and discussed Lukasz Fabianksi’s blunder against Liverpool.

The Hammers got so close to toppling the giants at their own home ground but, as they so often have this season, the Reds clawed fought back and continued their supremacy of the Premier League. Indeed, the Irons were leading 2-1 at one point but a blunder from their goalkeeper, who let the ball go through his legs and into the net, gifted Mohamed Salah an equaliser..

Still, Green believes this is something that happens from time to time and he doesn’t expect Fabianski to repeat his mistake in the future. Here’s what he said for BBC’s Football Daily podcast (25/02/2020): “After a game like today, you turn around and go – boys Lukasz isn’t going to make those mistakes again this season. And it’s stuff like that you can write off. When you get beat like that today, it is so frustrating. But these things happen over a season.”

While the mistake was a glaring one from the former Swansea custodian, he’s clearly a hugely important figure for the Hammers and Green is right to back him. Indeed, he was voted the club’s player of the season last year and The Guardian noted back in November that his side looked ‘lost without him during his injury lay-off earlier in the campaign’. Furthermore, as per the Premier League’s official website, the Poland international made the most saves of any ‘keeper over the entirety of the season (148), proving his worth.

West Ham fans, are you furious at Fabianski for making that mistake or do you also see it as a one-off? Let us know in the comments below!

Tottenham fans slam Hugo Lloris for display against Leipzig

A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have blasted Hugo Lloris for his role in Tuesday’s Champions League elimination to RB Leipzig.

Spurs entered the second leg of their last-16 tie trailing 1-0 and as a result, it was always going to be a tough ask in the return match.

Jose Mourinho’s side were well beaten in Germany, though, losing 3-0 on the night to suffer a 4-0 aggregate defeat.

No clues whatsoever: Which seasons do these iconic Spurs images belong to?

Lloris hardly covered himself in glory for either of Leipzig’s first two goals through Marcel Sabitzer, and a number of the London club’s fans took to social media after the match to show their frustration.

Some even claimed that Tottenham should look to sell the France international during this summer’s transfer window.

The 2018 World Cup winner has been with the Premier League club since 2012 but his recent performances seem to have seriously angered the supporters; the second tweet below is actually fairly kind, but the message is still clear.

One fan, meanwhile, called for Lloris’ retirement.

Meanwhile, a number of the Tottenham supporters were recently left fuming at a comment from Daniel Levy.

Celtic’s Christopher Jullien signing paying off

Nick Hammond has done some impressive recruitment since walking through the doors of Celtic Park. However, none has arguably been more important than Christopher Jullien.

With Filip Benkovic and Dedryck Boyata departing over the summer, they needed to bring in a capable centre-half.

Jullien has proven to be that during his spell at Celtic, even if there have been a few errors along the way.

Against Livingston on Wednesday, the 26-year-old made a mistake as he allowed Australian forward Lyndon Dykes to easily slide past him before setting up the hosts’ second goal of the encounter.

This wasn’t the first time Dykes had ran him ragged, though. Against Livi earlier in the campaign, Jullien had struggled to contain the Aussie attacker who gave him a torrid time in offensive positions.

Although the Frenchman was far from his best on Wednesday, he has delivered in one of the areas Hammond and Lennon identified when bringing him to Celtic for £7m.

Speaking after Celtic’s 1-0 win over St Johnstone last week, Lennon commented: “When we looked at Jullien, scoring goals was something we thought he could do in Scotland and Europe. He’s a threat and he has worked on it as he wants to get on the end of things.

“My old manager Martin O’Neill had plenty of players like that at Leicester and Celtic. Jullien would fit right into that mould. He’s brave and puts his head on things in both boxes.”

The defender showed his attacking prowess last weekend, making a nuisance of himself as he came close to diverting Ryan Christie’s goal into the back of the net himself.

But the fact of the matter is that Jullien’s seven strikes this season make him worth the investment. After all, bringing in a goal-scoring centre-half looked as though it was high on Celtic’s agenda last summer.

Per analysis tool Smarterscout, the 26-year-old has a higher xG (expected goals) per game than Odsonne Edouard. On top of that, his attacking output rating in the Europa League is 76/99 – something that outlines his prowess in the opposition penalty area.

The greatest rivalry in world football: Test your Old Firm derby knowledge below…

The tool uses algorithms and mathematical models developed by North Yard Analytics (NYA) to assess different aspects of players’ performances. In this case, analysing an attacking skillset, contributions to xGF per minute that a player’s team is in possession of the ball is the key factor.

It’s clear Jullien has a large involvement in Celtic’s attacking play from dead-ball scenarios and if you can look past the mistakes, specifically against Livi, you have to say this has been a brilliant piece of business.

Hammond and his scouting team should be applauded.

Tottenham fans react to Jan Vertonghen update

Jan Vertonghen is edging closer to the expiration of his contract at Tottenham and with no offer in sight he could be set to leave the club after eight years in North London. The Daily Mail report that recent activities have only increased the possibility that the Belgium international could depart, and supporters have naturally reacted to the news in their numbers.Interestingly, despite the defender’s years of service there has not been an overwhelming amount of well wishes for the 32-year-old, and similarly to Christian Eriksen’s departure, there seems to be a bit of a divide in the fanbase. Some feel Vertonghen’s performances tailed off in recent times, which is perhaps why he is being let go, and some have focused on the negatives by suggesting it is the right time for him to depart.

That view is an understandable one as the opportunity to get rid of his wages and bring in a fresh face, possibly a hungry young player, is something which could help Spurs as they have certainly struggled at the back.

Since Jose Mourinho took over the North London outfit has three clean sheets in 26 games, a far cry from when Tottenham conceded the least amount of goals in the division during the 2016/27 season.

For some, memories of Vertonghen in that period stand-out, and he is being remembered for his quality and the tremendous service he provided the club since he made the move from Ajax.

Wolves fans left humiliated by September claim

Back in September following a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace, some Wolves fans on Twitter made a bizarre claim.

The Molineux faithful on Twitter were calling for Nuno Espirito Santo to leave the club following the draw at Selhurst Park, in which Diogo Jota’s stoppage-time goal salvaged a point for the misfiring side from the Midlands.

Back then, Wolves were yet to win a Premier League game having drawn to Leicester, Manchester United and Burnley in the opening three fixtures, before defeat to Everton and Chelsea preceded their draw in south London.

It wasn’t an ideal start to the campaign, although things had been complicated by the Europa League qualifying rounds which began on June 25th, when most sides were still on their pre-season break.

Now, however, these Wolves fans look stupid.

Since that day in SE25, Nuno has guided his men up to sixth in the Premier League, all while using just 20 players – the lowest amount of any side in England’s top-flight.

Incredibly, Wolves have lost just four games from 24 Premier League outings since that draw against Crystal Palace, recording fine scalps against Manchester City on two occasions and also against Tottenham.

The Portuguese coach has also steered Wolves to the last 16 of the Europa League, where they registered a 1-1 draw away to Olympiakos before the season came to a halt.

Call yourself a Wolves expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Having demanded his departure back in September, we bet these Wolves fans are feeling pretty silly right now.

In other news, this 29-year-old has been Nuno’s glue this season despite making just 13 league starts…

Promotion may be worth less to both Leeds and WBA

West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United may be about to return to the Premier League.

Seeing both the Baggies and the Whites promoted won’t come as too much of a surprise to anyone after the two sides have dominated the automatic promotion spots for the large majority of this season, but the manner of their ascension may be an eyebrow-raiser.

Indeed, reports are stating that the pair could go up without playing all of their league games, and discussions about a 22-team Premier League season have apparently been tabled in a recent meeting.

Promotion to the top-flight would be brilliant for either side, but if the first division has 22 teams next term, Leeds and West Brom won’t earn as much as they usually would.

The equal share payments and international TV money are two sources of income that the league equally distributed, and they will now have to be dished out between two extra sides.

Watch Leeds United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

With the number of teams going from 20 to 22, that means each team will earn 10% less from these payments due to the extra clubs requiring payment.

If we take the most recent numbers available to us, Leeds and West Brom will likely earn £8.7m less than a Premier League outfit usually does if they enter into a 22-team division.

While that sum doesn’t seem like a lot when 19 out of 20 teams are earning in excess of £100m, that figure could prove decisive come the end of the season.

Leeds have seemingly already spent a lot of their summer transfer budget on obligation to buy fees that will be triggered upon promotion so an extra £8.7m would have been very handy for the Whites.

The Baggies are in a similar situation in that their squad will need a bit of a rebuild after the loan deals for likes of Filip Krovinovic, Grady Diangana, Matheus Pereira and Callum Robinson expire and they either have to pay to retain them or bring in replacements.

Of course, promotion will still be lucrative, but it won’t be as financially beneficial as first thought if the idea of a 22-team league comes to fruition.

In other news, Leeds don’t need to worry about one man’s future.

Leeds can upgrade White with Robin Koch addition

Leeds United’s season is on pause for the time being, so there’s no harm in trying to prepare for next season, and it is more than reasonable to suggest that they’ll be embarking on their first Premier League campaign in 16 years.

They’ll only have themselves to blame – or maybe the EFL – for failing to earn promotion considering they are seven points clear of the playoff zone with just nine games to play.

One of the biggest decisions facing manager Marcelo Bielsa will be sorting out his backline, perhaps a funny statement to make given their table-topping clean sheet numbers (17 for the season), but the Argentine is set to lose two centre-backs and the other senior option has plenty of question marks as it is.

Gaetano Berardi appears set to leave the club following the expiry of his contract as updates over an extension have been far and few between.

Liam Cooper is a dubious option in the top-flight as he’s only ever made two appearances at an elite level in his career – he’s 28.

While loan star and arguably ‘Player of the Season’ so far, Ben White, is a shoo-in to return to Brighton and Hove Albion, even more so amidst reported interest from the soon-to-be champions Liverpool.

It is his void that’ll be most felt in west Yorkshire – the 22-year-old has featured in every single match, averaging 2.3 interceptions and 1.7 tackles per game, via WhoScored.

However, a player who Victor Orta has extensively scouted is ready to leave his current club, and he’d potentially be an upgrade to the Seagulls’ colossus.

The Director of Football even hinted that he’d be available should they “get into another league”. The man in question is Freiburg powerhouse Robin Koch, who has been described as a “warrior” by his current boss.

And this week in an interview with Sport Bild, the 23-year-old German opened the door to a potential exit while according to Area Napoli, he’s informed the Bundesliga club of such a decision already.

They also claim he’ll be available for €20m (£18m) this summer and given the lucrative finances that promotion could bring, this would be a no-brainer for Leeds.

Koch has been capped at senior level for the four-time World Cup winners Germany and this campaign has put up impressive numbers in the top domestic tier. These are two factors lacking from White.

He’s also averaging 3.5 clearances, 0.7 blocks and 0.5 key passes per game, which outranks United’s loan man, via WhoScored.

Landing Koch in the summer will be one way the west Yorkshiremen can forget about their fan-favourite.

Three iconic goals that Liverpool fans will never forget

Liverpool and its fans have been waiting patiently for their first ever Premier League title and once football resumes, it looks like the Reds will finally get their wish.

So to highlight the stellar season they’re having, lets open the vault and have a look at some iconic goals that have created history…

Steven Gerrard vs West Ham (2006 FA Cup final)

The Reds’ most recent FA Cup to date was won in truly spectacular style. As the clock ticked down, Liverpool were trailing 3-2 to the Irons who had one eye and indeed, one hand on the trophy. Until the hero of the hour struck on the cusp of full-time and netted a goal that fans will never be able to forget.

The skipper sent a magnificent strike hurtling into the back of the net from outside the box. A goal that maybe wouldn’t have happened without Gerrard carrying an injury, after he admitted he ‘gambled’ with the attempt because he was too tired to run with the ball.

The goal forced extra time, after which the Reds snatched what looked a certain victory from West Ham and lifted the cup after winning 3-1 on penalties.

Divock Origi vs Barcelona (2019 Champions League semi-final)

Corner taken quickly… ORIGI!

Arguably the most iconic comeback in European history and indeed one of Liverpool’s most important wins.

After taking a 3-0 thrashing at Camp Nou, Jurgen Klopp’s side already looked down and out – with little hope resting on the second semi-final leg at Anfield. But a dream was born and the men in red were determined to recreate the club’s most famous European night… an unbelievable 4-0 win took Liverpool into the final where they eventually went on to lift their sixth Champions League trophy.

Alexander-Arnold’s delivery and Origi’s finish to find Liverpool’s fourth goal has etched itself into the history books forever. Has the Anfield win overtaken that night in Istanbul?

Steven Gerrard vs Olympiacos (2005 Champions League – Group A)

Another European evening in the history books and another astonishing comeback to create one of the club’s most successful seasons. The Reds looked as though they wouldn’t make it out of Europe’s group stage, with their position in the competition resting solely on their second meeting with the Greek outfit.

After a goal from Rivaldo, Liverpool needed three to secure their progression into the knockouts. Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Neil Mellor netted the first two before the captain hammered the nail in the coffin. Gerrard’s late strike was enough to send his side into the Round of 16 in superb fashion, onwards to become eventual champions of Europe for the first time since 1984.

Not only did the Merseyside local help create history with the club, but his goal was the birth of some truly iconic commentary.
