How Tottenham should line-up against Norwich

Tottenham returned to winning ways against Brighton on Boxing Day but the victory came as a relief more than anything else.

Another lacklustre display has seen fan discontent towards Mourinho grow, and though Harry Kane and Dele Alli came up with two good finishes to win the match, it was another stale Spurs performance.

There was a clear lack of pace and intensity throughout the team and that, combined with a lack of creativity, contributed to a mediocre attack which managed just four shots on target – the same number as Brighton had.

Norwich have the potential to trouble Mourinho’s team having beaten the likes of Manchester City, though given the Canaries have conceded 38 league goals this season and have won just one of their last 18 games it should be a chance for Spurs to show their attacking strength.

Mourinho seems to have sorted the defensive woes which hindered Mauricio Pochettino towards the end of his reign, with even Serge Aurier showing some defensive capability, but he now needs to add more flair and excitement.

He has often utilised five-at-the-back last time out but against Norwich that is a little unnecessary, and therefore he should bring another, more creative player into the mix.

With Heung-Min Son still suspended because of the red card he received against Chelsea there is a space on the left-flank which needs filling.

Christian Eriksen would ordinarily be the answer but he has started only two games under the Portuguese boss, who may instead be inclined to give Giovani Lo Celso a chance.

No clues whatsoever: Which seasons do these iconic Spurs images belong to?

Unlike the Dane, the Real Betis’ loanee is definitely going to be at the club after a £34m move was agreed in the summer, and given injury has prevented him from playing as much as he would have liked, he deserves a chance now he is fit.

This match could be ideal for the playmaker too given the openness with which Norwich play, as he showed last season that he has an eye for a goal or an assist, with a combined total of 22 last term.

That could make him the perfect man to play alongside Kane and Alli, and if Spurs can keep things tight with a back four – Davinson Sanchez perhaps being the unlucky player to be dropped – then the away side should make it back-to-back wins.

Tottenham fans may think that one player doesn’t deserve to start given they were highly critical of his showing against the Seagulls.

Phil Hay believes Leeds will target three positions to bolster squad in January

Leeds United could be active in the January transfer market if the latest remarks from The Athletic’s Phil Hay are to be believed as he claims three different positions could be high on the agenda.

What’s he said?

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are entering the new year, and the new decade, sitting top of the Championship table following an enthralling 5-4 victory at Birmingham City.

They’ll face their nearest challengers, West Bromwich Albion, in just a few days time to kickstart 2020, meaning there’s a possibility that they could open up a three-point cushion in first place.

There has been plenty of talk ahead of next month as the transfer window reopens, will Leeds do business? won’t they? Hay’s comments following Saturday’s game certainly hints towards them being rather active, he said:

“What I’m told, it’ll be a striker if Nketiah goes, a winger to replace Clarke and potentially an experienced keeper to sit on the bench behind Meslier if Casilla picks up a racism ban. They won’t be season-changing signings, I don’t think.”

January additions

Leeds were top at Christmas last season and faltered during the final run-in becoming the only team this decade to not earn promotion from the Championship from such a position.

Bielsa’s job will be to ensure that doesn’t happen again, even more so considering the position they are in going into the new year – there’s a nine-point margin to those outside of the automatic spots.

If Eddie Nketiah is indeed recalled back to Arsenal, Leeds will only really have one senior striker to call upon so that could quickly become a cause for concern while Jack Clarke’s clause has already been enacted, meaning there’s a need for a wide player, although the chances of it being Jarrod Bowen have been quashed a long time ago.

Hay also suggests that a goalkeeper will be needed with Kiko Casilla’s looming suspension surely on the horizon.

Spurs fans split on link with Lemar

Tottenham Hotspur fans have reacted to a fresh report linking them with Atletico Madrid winger Thomas Lemar.

Foot Mercato previously mooted them as a suitor for the France international, and The Independent have now reported that Spurs have been offered the chance to sign him in the January transfer window.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

The report states that the club are weighing up a loan move that would cost €6m (£5m) with a potential option to buy the 24-year-old for €60m (£50.9m).

With Lemar failing to score or provide an assist thus far this season, fans weren’t impressed by the Foot Mercato report – some said the winger isn’t good enough, while others questioned the validity of the link  – and negativity has been a common theme amongst the reaction once again…

Some other supporters, though, are more open to the idea than when the rumour initially emerged, perhaps because it’s now clear Lemar is available to Tottenham or because of the way the deal would be structured.

Lemar, of course, was at the centre of something of a transfer tug-of-war prior to his move to Atletico, with Arsenal interested in securing his signature.

During his time at Monaco he scored 22 goals and registered 33 assists, playing for the club when Joao Sacramento, Spurs’ assistant coach, was also with the Ligue 1 side.

It remains to be seen if Lemar will end up in north London; the Gunners are also said to be interested, as they were prior to his switch to La Liga.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans have told Daniel Levy to do one thing in January.

Tancredi Palmeri offers update on Everton’s pursuit of Matias Vecino

Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri has offered an update on Everton’s reported interest in Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino on Twitter.

What’s the latest?

Palmeri didn’t give too much away as he simply said that the Toffees have made contact with the Serie A outfit over a move, nevertheless the fact they have done it may suggest that the Merseyside outfit could be keen on bringing the 28-year-old to Goodison Park sooner rather than later.

The reliable Gianluca Di Marzio reported last week that Everton were keen on the Uruguay international, and it now appears as though they have initiated that initial correspondence, as per Palmeri.

Di Marzio said at the time that Carlo Ancelotti took a liking to the South American star when he came up against him as Napoli manager.

Will he join this month?

It would certainly be a strange move in many ways.

While the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Gylfi Sigurdsson haven’t particularly impressed in the middle of the park with both coming under criticism from supporters on Twitter, the Toffees still have plenty of options there.

Call yourself an Everton expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Tom Davies, Fabian Delph and even Mason Holgate can play there with the latter shining in the draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford last month with a higher WhoScored rating than any of his teammates, while Andre Gomes has returned to training after fracturing his ankle against Tottenham in November, and Jean-Philippe Gbamin is also closing in on a return.

In Ancelotti’s preferred 4-4-2 formation that would leave at least seven players fighting for two positions, and that is overkill to say the least if no-one is leaving before January 31st.

Everton may well want Vecino, but they would be better off waiting until the summer to see where they are at.

Tottenham fans react to dispute between Jose Mourinho and Danny Rose

Tottenham’s season seems to be getting worse and worse with setbacks seemingly occurring every week.

The fact Harry Kane is sidelined for a significant period and the team currently enduring a run of one win six league games is bad enough, but the Daily Mail has now reported a dispute between two individuals at the club.

Danny Rose, who had been injured for a month before making a comeback against Liverpool more than a week ago, has allegedly been involved in a confrontation with Jose Mourinho over his omission from the squad against Watford.

The two didn’t see eye-to-eye on the defender’s current state of fitness, with the Spurs boss suggesting a problem with his back meant he wasn’t in the right place to play.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Many fans have taken Mourinho’s side in this battle and it is Rose who is facing criticism – he is seemingly unpopular for previous comments and his declining performances.

Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga have both played at left-back in recent weeks, two young players who could potentially replace Rose long-term, with Ben Davies still a part of the set-up, too.

Such friction could, therefore, disrupt the squad dynamic and create hostility towards Mourinho or Rose, and Tottenham must avoid that.

The England international was linked with a move to Watford last summer and it may be wise to try and move him on once again, in order to avoid disharmony and possible future instances of arguments breaking out.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

Given Rose’s service to the club over the years and the fact he came through the academy, it would be a sad way for his Spurs career to end, so it is good to see some fans support him.

In transfer news, Spurs have been busy in terms of new recruits, with an exciting young player reportedly being lined up by the club.

West Ham owner David Sullivan keen to land Ronaldo Vieira

David Ornstein has laid down further claims on West Ham’s pursuit of Sampdoria midfielder Ronaldo Vieira, suggesting David Sullivan is very keen on the player.

What’s he said?

The Athletic journalist suggested on Monday that the Hammers were in the chase for the former Leeds man and that his club could be willing to part company with the 21-year-old.

However, it would take a fee of around €20m (£16.9m) in order to so.

According to the initial report, Burnley are also chasing the midfield man as they look to bring him back to English football after he departed Elland Road in 2018.

But speaking on the Ornstein and Chapman Podcast (28/01/2020), the journalist had more to say on the potential transfer. He said:

“David Sullivan has been appointed contact on this proposed transfer and he is said to be very keen to bring Vieira in. David Moyes is said to be pretty keen – not fully convinced yet and that’s the case with a lot of players that Moyes brings in – he analyses a lot of videos and picks out faults. But a decision now needs to be made on this, or will West Ham look to readdress it in the summer?”

Disparity between Moyes and Sullivan

On the podcast, Ornstein also noted how that since Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos left the club, it’s now just Moyes and Sullivan in charge of transfers.

Whether or not this will be a good relationship for the club remains to be seen but it is clear there is a difference in opinion and methods.

Call yourself a West Ham expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Sullivan is keen to land the player but it appears as though Moyes needs more time to weigh up whether a move for Vieira is the right one.

Analysing videos and picking out potential faults and positives is a good idea but with the window quickly ticking away, the Scotsman may have to make a decision very quickly – that’s if they want him in the winter.

As Ornstein says, they may look to reignite interest in the summer but the fact Moyes isn’t completely sold on a player Sullivan desperately wants to bring to the London Stadium is not a good thing for recruitment.

If the owners bring in a player who Moyes doesn’t necessarily like, it doesn’t bode well for an already fractious club.

West Brom handed Grady Diangana lifeline but it comes at an immediate cost

West Brom’s season has just been handed a major lifeline, although it comes at a worrying and immediate expense, so here’s the latest news surrounding loan star Grady Diangana.

What’s the situation?

The Baggies were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City at the Hawthorns on Monday night as they slumped to their third defeat of the entire Championship campaign.

Diangana lasted just four minutes in the match on what was his first start since returning from injury, and the latest word coming from the Albion camp is that he could be out for another month, which would be a devastating blow to their fortunes.

However, it does mean that the 21-year-old is more than likely to remain a West Brom player for the rest of the season with West Ham manager David Moyes eluding to that in a recent press conference.

He said:

“It was a big consideration [recalling him].

“His injury last night has put paid to him coming back. We are so short of players just now, [it’ll be] maybe a month’s time when he’s recovered.

“He’ll probably stay there until the end of the season. We think [Josh] Cullen getting games for Charlton is the best thing, too.”

David Moyes, West Ham boss

Season-long boost, immediate blow

The Baggies were preparing a £1.5m offer to keep Diangana at the club as his recall deadline, the 27th of January, rapidly approached, but it now appears as if they won’t have to stump up extra cash this month.

He has been one of West Brom’s most influential players this season, and an argument can be made that he’s even more key to their success than 14-assist king Matheus Pereira.

Watch West Bromwich Albion Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

When Diangana plays, Slaven Bilic’s side have won 62% of matches, averaged two goals and 2.1 points per game whilst without him those figures drop severely. Their win percentage drops to just 14%, averaging only one goal and 1.1 points per game, via The Athletic.

So this latest update surrounding the enigmatic winger is certainly a double-edged sword as on the one hand, they’ll get to keep him for the title run-in at no extra financial expense, but they’ll be without him for the next six or seven matches which has to be a worry considering the above statistic.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all of these obscure West Brom players…

Albion haven’t won in six straight league matches, can they really afford this injury to Diangana now? Leeds are just a point behind while Fulham are following behind in the automatic promotion race, five points back in third place.

And in other news, West Brom’s reported pursuit of Champions League ace could hinder Kyle Edwards’ future at the Hawthorns…

Connor Wickham set for medical at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on a new striker this afternoon.According to Dom Howson at the Sheffield Star, the Owls have their man at last as Connor Wickham is set for a medical ahead of a loan switch from Premier League outfit Crystal Palace.[ad_pod ]It will be his third temporary spell at Hillsborough, where he has scored nine goals in 17 appearances.Howson tweeted:

Wednesday have had a desperate need to bolster their frontline this month after suffering a major blow to top goalscorer Steven Fletcher.

The 32-year-old went down injured against Brighton in the FA Cup and after he was stretchered off, fears were confirmed as he is due out until March at the earliest.

Who on earth is that?!?! Can you name all of these obscure January signings?

Wickham needs to pass a medical with flying colours for this to go over the line before tonight’s transfer deadline. Some will obviously have their doubts as the Eagles striker has endured an injury-blighted career at Selhurst Park, playing just 48 times in four years.

This arrival may not be the last as Owls boss Garry Monk said earlier today in his pre-game press conference that he would ideally like two in before the close of play.

The new Larsson? Celtic fans react to Odsonne Edouard’s display vs Motherwell

Celtic visited Motherwell on Wednesday and trounced their opponent with a domineering 4-0 victory to consolidate their position at the summit of the SPFL.

Unsurprisingly, Odsonne Edouard played a crucial part in helping his side clinch the three points with his fantastic brace on the night.

The 22-year-old centre-forward showed his worth once again and his impact caused quite an explosion on Twitter as many Celtic fans were simply left in awe of their rising star.

The greatest rivalry in world football: Test your Old Firm derby knowledge below…

Many fans were left claiming that the Hoops have to do whatever it takes to keep him at Paradise, with extortionate figures mentioned in regard to his current valuation.

One fan even remarked that they should just give him Peter Lawwell’s wages seeing how the chief executive reportedly earned a whopping £3.5m last season…

And some were left so enchanted with his display that they started listing all the things Edouard can do that would seem impossible for other players.

Of course, nutmegging a mermaid or a tree appear to be rather popular ways of alluding to one’s brilliance…

Finally, one fan also stated that the 22-year-old could slowly but surely be turning into the legendary Henrik Larsson, which is a huge claim for a player at such a tender age.

It would be an understatement to say he’s rated highly at the club.

In other news, many Celtic fans were delighted with an update some labelled as “best Celtic news all year so far”…

Celtic’s predicted starting XI vs Hearts

Celtic have recorded eight straight home wins against Hearts at Paradise and they haven’t tasted defeat in this fixture since the visitors claimed a 2-1 victory in the Scottish Cup back in 2012.

The historic record between these two sides combined with Celtic’s five match winning streak in the SPFL since the turn of the year point towards victory for the hosts this evening, but Neil Lennon’s side cannot afford to be complacent with Rangers breathing down their necks in the race for the title.

The Hoops have consolidated their position at the summit of the division since returning from the winter break, and they also booked a place in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup on Sunday with a 3-0 win away at Clyde.

Lennon made a host of changes for the weekend clash, but FFC expect the 48-year-old will restore many of his first-team regulars to the starting XI tonight, making a total of six changes in all.

We anticipate that Leigh Griffiths, Neil Taylor, Callum McGregor, Fraser Forster, Odsonne Edouard and Stephen Welsh will all be involved in the lineup tonight.

Patryk Klimala, Mohamed Elyounoussi, Mortiz Bauer, Scott Bain, Boli Bolingoli and Ryan Christie make way for the aforementioned players, with Lennon starting the same XI that dispatched of Hamilton 4-1 at the start of the month.

There’s no place for Elyounoussi in the lineup despite his return from injury last weekend as Lennon’s preference for a defensive trio paves no obvious path for a route back into the side.

Stephen Welsh, meanwhile, makes his home debut for the club in a game in which the hosts are bound to dominate possession. The youngster’s composure and ability to distribute from deep could prove to be a useful asset for the Bhoys.
