Green gung-ho about IPL 2023 but hectic calendar will make it tough, warns Warner

Warner on Green: Nineteen weeks straight in India will get you cooked

Cameron Green is excited about the possibility of going to the IPL in 2023 despite a warning from David Warner about the consequences of adding the world’s longest T20 franchise tournament to a monstrous Test and ODI workload in the calendar year.Green will enter the auction, and could well be at the centre of a bidding war after catching the eye of a number of the franchise owners in the three-T20I tour of India in September, where he smashed two blistering half-centuries, striking at 214.54 for the series.Related

But he will have nine Tests to play between now and the start of the IPL, including a four-Test tour of India just prior to the tournament. Australia also have a three-ODI series scheduled on the back of the Test series in India. Green is also contracted to play some BBL cricket for Perth Scorchers in the three weeks between the Sydney Test against South Africa, his fifth of the summer, and the first Test in India.Immediately after the IPL, Australia will play the five-match Ashes in England and there is also the possibility they could play the World Test Championship final in England in early June. Australia then have a white-ball tour of South Africa in August prior to the 50-over World Cup in October in India.”I think from an experience point of view, it’s great,” Warner, an IPL regular since 2009, said. “From a playing point of view, he’s obviously got four Test matches and a few T20s [and] ODIs after it. So, look, 19 weeks straight in India… being your first trip there as well can be quite challenging from the heat perspective, the playing, the recovery. It’s a different heat. I’ve been through that, I’ve played that, I’ve done the Test series and the IPL straight before. It is tough.”Put on the back of that, you’ve got five Test matches in England. I think it’s 20 days off before you go play World Cup. It’s a big year. Glenn Maxwell did it a couple years ago, played the whole year, and was cooked come the [home] season.”So, from a youngster’s point of view, it’s totally up to him. It’s a decision he has to make for the longevity of his career. It’s a big call for him as a youngster and whatever decision he goes with, you know, we’ll respect it as players. But, ultimately, it’s down to him and obviously with CA and I don’t know what those conversations are.”Green has had those conversations with Australia’s chairman of selectors George Bailey and coach Andrew McDonald, also a selector, and they have not discouraged Green from going to the IPL.”I’ve had really good chats with those guys, and they’re really open to me going,” Green said. “Obviously you’re going to a pretty cool environment where you’re around all the best players in the world and the best coaching staff and you’ve got all the facilities to bat all day if you want to and really learn about your game. So, I think it’s just a really good environment to learn about your cricket and hopefully a lot of things that I can take back with me and then share with the guys in Australia.””I think it’s just a really good environment to learn about your cricket and hopefully a lot of things that I can take back with me”•Getty Images

The selectors have an eye on the T20 World Cup in 2024 – Green’s relative inexperience in the format was a major reason why he was not used more in the recent 2022 tournament in Australia. The 2024 IPL appears a better fit for Green from a workload perspective, given Australia have a lighter Test schedule and it provides a perfect lead-in to the tournament mid-year in the Caribbean and the USA. However, Green was confident about playing next year.”It’s going to be a really tough year – I don’t think anyone’s disagreeing with that,” he said. “But it’s just a really good opportunity. I think if you’re playing all three formats, and the IPL, you’re going to be learning a lot about your cricket. Yeah, you might get pushed a little bit with your body but I’ve got good resources around me to kind of get through that. You do everything you can to look after your body and have rest when you can.”Green had been considering a stint in county cricket in England in the winter of 2022 in between Australia’s away Test series in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, before opting to rest after the attritional series in Pakistan.

Left in 2015: Liverpool’s £4m flop is outscoring Darwin Nunez in 24/25

Liverpool have dropped points in their past two away matches in the Premier League, against Everton and Aston Villa respectively.

In fact, the Reds have drawn half of their eight top-flight fixtures in 2025, though hold a sizeable eight-point lead over second-place Arsenal, who do have a game in hand.

Arne Slot has worked wonders since taking the helm last summer, with Liverpool also into the Carabao Cup final and the last 16 of the Champions League, waiting for the draw that will confirm either Paris Saint-Germain or Benfica as their opponents.

Liverpool have looked good across the park, but up front, they have torn teams to shreds when on their a-game. It’s not all been rosy up top, however, with one man in particular flattering to deceive.

Let’s have a look at Liverpool’s recent history with number nines.

Liverpool's strikers over the past decade

Luis Suarez was probably Liverpool’s last true superstar before Brendan Rodgers’ dismissal. Steven Gerrard, of course, still played, but he was ageing. Suarez left for Barcelona just over a decade ago after his 31-goal Premier League term wasn’t enough to steer over the title-winning line.

The pretty penny claimed for his sale led to the likes of Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli, both of whom flattered to deceive. Daniel Sturridge was already part of the crew but endured injury problems in waves as he struggled to reclaim that sparkling form of 2013/14.

Christian Benteke followed, joining from Aston Villa for about £32.5m in 2015 and scoring nine goals over 29 league games before departing for £27m in Klopp’s first summer transfer window. It was ruthless, but the right move.

Mohamed Salah isn’t a centre-forward but he’s one of the Anfield side’s greatest-ever goalscorers, creeping up the all-time charts. He’s joined by Diogo Jota right now but played with Divock Origi in the early days of his Reds career, a man immortalised in Merseyside history.

Then, of course, Jurgen Klopp led the signing of Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, bringing him in for a club-record £85m fee. He’s ebbed and flowed across the three years, but seems to have bitterly regressed under Slot’s wing and could be facing a departure this summer.

Darwin Nunez in 24/25

We know for sure that the Saudi Arabian-based interest in Nunez’s signature was genuine last month. Fabrizio Romano said so.

However, Al-Nassr ended up signing Jhon Duran instead, ending a free-scoring breakout campaign in Europe and moving to the Gulf in a deal worth £71m.

The fact remains that Liverpool’s expensive striker is looking likely for sale at the end of the season. With just six goals and five assists across the campaign, he’s fallen heavily by the wayside.

The fact that a 37-year-old Liverpool flop is outscoring him only adds insult to injury.

The Liverpool flop who's outscoring Nunez

Liverpool have had modern focal frontmen of all shapes and sizes, but there’s one who left almost a decade ago and has since built themselves up to be a high-class goalscorer back in their Spanish homeland.

The man in question is Iago Aspas, who might be in the ostensible twilight phase of his career but remains a steady scorer in La Liga.

Where Are They Now

Aspas left Celta Vigo to sign for Rodgers’ Liverpool for £9m in 2013, having notched 19 goal contributions from 32 top-flight fixtures before moving to England in Los Celestes’ first campaign out of the second tier.

His time on English shores didn’t work out, making just five starting appearances in the Premier League as he was minnowed by the likes of Suarez and Sturridge. Furthermore, Aspas didn’t manage to score in the division, bagging his lonely Liverpool goal against Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup.

Liverpool knew rather quickly that the homesick forward wasn’t going to make it in the long run, and so he was sold back to Celta for around £4m in 2015 after spending the 2014/15 campaign on loan with Sevilla, where he won the Europa League.

Rodgers thought he saw something and in some ways has seen his decision vindicated by the attacker’s consistency over so many years in Spain, hitting double figures in La Liga across eight of the past ten campaigns.

He could make that nine with a rich burst of form over the coming months. Aspas is approaching the final year of his long journey but he’s still playing a part as the captain of his 14th-place outfit, having posted seven goals and three assists from 17 appearances.

This, rather embarrassingly, is more than Nunez’s haul for Liverpool in the Premier League this year: four goals from 24 games. The Uruguayan also only has six goals in total in all competitions.

To highlight further how impressive this record is, Aspas has only started 13 of the 17 league matches he has played this season, contributing toward his ranking among the top 14% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored (0.48) per 90, as per FBref.

He’s not as mobile as he once was, naturally, but the former Spain international shows intelligence and dynamism that frankly Nunez is unable to offer.

Emphasising this, Aspas has completed 59% of his dribbles in La Liga this term, as per Sofascore, only completing 1.2 dribbles every two games but proving match smarts in knowing when to put his foot on the gas.

Nunez, in contrast, has completed only 40% of his ball-carrying attempts in England this year, down from 43% last season and a more respectable 49% average in his maiden year. It’s simply not good enough, and indicative of his slump.

In front of goal, Nunez is not missing that many chances this season, but this serves as more as a barometer of Nunez’s decreased impact at the front of the ship, averaging 1.2 shots per Premier League match this term after firing 3.0 per outing last year, as per Sofascore.

Slot is a strong proponent of fluidity and interchangeability. He likes his Liverpool side to work hard and attack with ferocity. Nunez, in a way, embodies part of this.

He is hard-working and difficult to combat from a defensive standpoint. However, his lack of self-belief and composure in front of goal has unravelled all of the good work.

The simple fact is that Liverpool’s club-record centre-forward shouldn’t be being outscored by an ageing veteran in Aspas.

The 37-year-old flopped at Anfield and did so well to build a successful career in Spain thereafter, but if his superiority in 2024/25 isn’t a sign that Nunez needs to go – what is?

As bad as Nunez: Slot must ruthlessly drop Liverpool's "dreadful" 5/10 ace

Labuschagne's big hundred puts Australia in command

Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith played key roles in century stands on a day of toil for West Indies

Marnus Labuschagne celebrates his hundred•AFP

Marnus Labuschagne weathered an early assault on a green-tinged Optus Stadium pitch to compile a brilliant unbeaten century, as Australia dominated an increasingly ragged West Indies on the opening day of the first Test.Coming to the crease in the fourth over after the wicket of opener David Warner, Labuschagne was confronted by a pumped-up attack on a surface with 10mm of grass left on it .But through century partnerships with Usman Khawaja and an irresistible Steve Smith, he gained a stranglehold of the contest and crushed the hopes of West Indies, whose chances of ending a 25-year Test drought in Australia look already forlorn after the opening day of the two-match series. While most of their team-mates have lacked playing red ball cricket, amid a slew of limited-overs internationals, Labuschagne and Khawaja showed the benefit of a lengthy preparation through four Sheffield Shield matches with Queensland this season.Related

Cummins does not want to lose Australia's realistic chance at WTC final (once again)

Labuschagne has clearly enjoyed returning to Optus Stadium, where he scored 143 and 50 against New Zealand three years ago in the last Test match played at the 60,000-seat ground. While Khawaja looked in sparkling touch from the get go to continue his Test resurgence as an opener with an average of 95 for the calendar year. It was almost a shock when he fell before tea to a cracker of a delivery from seamer Kyle Mayers, but Australia soon regained control in a one-sided final session.Perhaps sensing their opposition wilting, Labuschagne and Smith put the foot down after tea to score freely as West Indies went through the motions and their quicks were unconvincing with the second new ball.Labuschagne celebrated reaching his century with gusto, taking his helmet off and raising his bat aloft after receiving a firm hug from Smith. He was in strong form throughout his innings although received some luck before tea when he edged through the slips during a menacing burst from quick Kemar Roach and had two moments of fortune during a lively over from Jayden Seales where he top edged a short ball and then nicked through the cordon. He capitalised on an increasingly weary West Indies effort, hooking a six off Alzarri Joseph into the sparse grandstands late in the day.Smith’s strong form from the ODI series against England continued, underlining his increasing confidence with his new technique, which he recently refined by abandoning shuffling across the crease.Kyle Mayers found Usman Khawaja’s outside edge•Getty Images

Even though his trademark exaggeration after leaving deliveries was still eye-catching, Smith was well balanced at the crease as he continually drove sweetly through the covers.West Indies had few answers as they slumped during a subpar final session marred by wayward bowling and sloppy fielding. When Labuschagne was 136 he almost found deep point with an upper cut against Seales but debutant Tagenarine Chanderpaul couldn’t quite get there. It was a disappointing back end of the day for West Indies, whose hopes of an upset were seemingly raised when Australia captain Pat Cummins gambled and batted first. They bowled a good line and length backed up by aggressive captaincy from skipper Kraigg Brathwaite, who implemented attacking fields complete with five slips reminiscent of the nearby WACA’s heyday.West Indies were rewarded with the early wicket of Warner, whose lean run in Test cricket continued when he chopped a full and wide delivery from Seales onto the stumps. But inroads failed to materalise as Labuschagne and Khawaja dug in before gaining control in the afternoon amid cooler weather and a flagging attack on a surface playing fewer tricks than expected. There were fears of a frosty reception from fans after the fallout over ex-coach Justin Langer’s recent inflammatory interview, which overshadowed the opening Test of the Australian summer. But Langer, a favourite son in his hometown of Perth, was on the ground before play chatting to several Australia players in perhaps a sign of a truce. There was no apparent ill feeling throughout the day from fans, who also applauded both teams for taking the knee before play in a stand against racism. But a crowd of just 10,929 underlined the general apathy in Perth for the match, which received little fanfare in the lead up.A full-strength Australia went in as expected, while West Indies named Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the son of legendary batter Shivnarine, for his Test debut and he received his marooned cap from Brian Lara before play.

PSG make stunning £112m offer to sign "world-class" Arsenal star

Paris Saint-Germain have now tabled a £112m offer for a “world-class” Arsenal player, according to a report.

Gunners' title hopes take hit

The Gunners’ hopes of winning the Premier League title took a significant hit on Saturday afternoon, succumbing to a surprise 1-0 defeat at home against West Ham United, their third league loss of the season.

After being unable to score against a struggling side, the decision not to bring in a new striker in January is beginning to look even more questionable, with Mikel Arteta saying his team lacked precision and quality.

The manager also added: “It’s my responsibility for the team to play much better than it did today. We have to play much better, with much more quality, much more interaction. It’s not good enough, that’s on me.”

Striker is a problem position for Arteta, but one area which has looked solid this season is midfield, with Thomas Partey and Declan Rice among the most consistent performers in the Premier League.

Arteta’s 4/10 Arsenal man is fast becoming the new Xhaka

As such, one of Europe’s top clubs are believed to have taken an interest in Rice, with a report from Spain claiming PSG have now submitted a €135m (£112m) offer for the midfielder.

However, the Gunners are unwilling to sanction the Englishman’s departure for less than €160m (£133m), given his importance to the team, playing a key role ever since arriving at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal's DeclanRicecelebrates after the match

Arteta has no desire to let the 26-year-old leave, and he is believed to be happy in north London, so it does not seem like a move will be on the cards anytime soon.

Rice departure seems very unlikely

In truth, the idea that PSG have submitted an offer seems highly questionable, but if there is any concrete interest in the central midfielder, the Gunners should rebuff it.

Lauded as “world-class” by members of the media, the former West Ham man has been a mainstay in the Arsenal starting XI since his switch to north London, and he is among their best-performing players this season.

The best may still be yet to come, too, with the midfielder of the belief that he has been improving as the season has gone on.

Saturday’s performance was not the England international’s best, being withdrawn early in the second half with the Gunners chasing the game, but the whole team underperformed, with the lack of an out-and-out striker proving to be a major issue.

The report suggests Arsenal could be willing to sanction a departure for a fee of around £133m, but even in the scenario of receiving a bid in that ballpark, the offer should be rejected, as Rice would be almost impossible to replace.
