Imagine him & Anderson: Forest now want to sign one of the ‘best CMs’

Nottingham Forest’s incredible start to the season is turning into something more than just a fast start. The City Ground faithful dared to dream of European football a few games into the campaign, but perhaps those dreams are well on the way to becoming reality with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side sitting third in the Premier League.

Goal difference is the only thing separating the men in Garibaldi Red from second-place Arsenal, with both sides on 40 points. Liverpool who are currently top of the Premier League, have a six-point lead.

Champions League football could become a reality for the East Midlands club at the end of the season. Nuno could look to bring in reinforcements this winter to ensure they get over the line, with Forest linked with a midfielder.

Nottingham Forest’s midfield target

The player in question here is Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz. The Brazilian has been out of favour in Turin since his summer move from Aston Villa, and could now depart the club in the January transfer window.

According to a report from the highly reputable Fabrizio Romano, Forest “are among the clubs showing interest” in a move for the midfielder this winter. He reports that the former Villa man’s “situation is open” ahead of a busy few weeks in January.

They could well face competition from other sides in the English top flight. According to Italian outlet Tutto Juve, Tottenham Hotspur are also considering doing a deal, with Manchester United and Arsenal also showing interest.

Why Douglas Luiz would be a good signing

Sadly, the Brazil international has not been a regular starter for the Turin giants this season, after his big-money £42.35m move from Villa Park. He has been out of favour under new Juve boss Thiago Motta.

In total, Luiz has managed just 13 appearances across all competitions, with nine of those coming in Serie A. He has featured for just 354 minutes altogether, which equates to a remarkably low 3.93 full 90-minute games.

With that in mind, it is no surprise that he could be searching for an exit from the Old Lady. However, there is no doubting his quality, which he showcased for Villa during his time in England.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In fact, football statistician Statman Dave previously described him as the “best box-to-box CM in the Premier League”, showing how highly rated he was.

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

The midfielder was formidable for the Villans. Over the span of five seasons in Claret and Blue, he played 204 games, scoring 22 goals and grabbing 24 assists.

Luiz’s best campaign at Villa Park came in 2023/24, where he scored nine times and registered five assists in 35 Premier League games.

Should Forest get this deal over the line, they could see a fantastic midfield partnership form between Luiz and Elliot Anderson. The Newcastle United academy graduate has been impressive for Forest so far this season, with Nuno describing him as an “amazing talent” earlier in the season.

He has been superb in Garibaldi Red since his move last summer, playing 19 times in the Premier League and registering five assists in that time. His quick feet and creativity have been a breath of fresh air for Forest.

The pair are both more than complimentary of each other in a midfield pivot, although one may have to take up more defensive responsibility. The stats on Squawka suggest it is certainly a duo that could work. It is worth considering that these are from their most recent season in the Premier League.

The Forest star trumps the £134k-per-week Brazilian in many key metrics. That includes the number of duels won per game, with 8.8 compared to 4.5, and the number of chances created per 90 minutes, with 2.1 as opposed to 1.6 for Luiz.

Signing Luiz could be a fantastic piece of business this winter for Forest. He is clearly a superb player, and, as the stats suggest, could work well in a midfield pivot with Anderson.

Renuka, Deepti three-fors give India 1-0 lead

Ranaweera’s four-for had India wobbling but the target was too small to stage a comeback

Sreshth Shah01-Jul-2022

Renuka Singh dismissed Chamari Athapaththu early•Sri Lanka Cricket

India beat Sri Lanka in the opening ODI of the three-match series in Pallekele, but not before a scare. Sri Lanka offspinner Oshadi Ranasinghe took two early wickets, left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera took 4 for 39 through the middle overs, and for a brief period, it seemed that Sri Lanka would successfully defend 171.However, their below-par total meant India’s struggling batting line-up could creep up and register a four-wicket win, bringing relief to a unit that would have wanted to chase it down with ease at the halfway mark. For India, the difference between victory and defeat was the 62-run fourth-wicket partnership between captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Harleen Deol. Their partnership, which came at a run rate of 6.2, ensured that not only were runs added on a deteriorating surface, but they came quickly.Deol, in particular, was aggressive in her approach despite the field being spread out, and in her first ODI since her debut in February 2019, she made 34 in 40 balls. Harmanpreet was more watchful, scoring only three boundaries in her 44, and opted to pierce the gaps and push her partner for the extra run when on offer. The duo followed the template set by Shafali Verma in her 40-ball 35 up top, but the three quick top-order wickets and then the Ranaweera burst in the middle overs meant the final hour of the game was full of nerves. But Deepti Sharma ensured she stayed till the end to shepherd the chase through. Coming in at No. 6, and high on confidence from her three-wicket haul in the first innings, Deepti put on an unbeaten 38-run stand with Pooja Vastrakar for the seventh wicket to seal the win with 72 balls to spare. Deepti made 22 off 41 balls, while Vastrakar ended the game with a six to finish on 21 off 19.Deepti was one of two stars with the ball for India. Renuka Singh also picked up a three-wicket haul to bowl out Sri Lanka for 171. Deepti feasted through the middle overs of the first innings, making full use of the big turn on offer, dismissing Hansima Karunaratne for a duck and Hasini Perera for 37. Deepti took the final Sri Lankan wicket too, leaving the hosts with ten deliveries unused. But, arguably, it was Renuka’s early strike that made the biggest difference in Sri Lanka’s chances of searching for the win after choosing to bat. She got the big wicket of Sri Lanka’s star batter and captain Chamari Athapaththu in the third over of the morning, and later closed her day out with two late wickets of Nilakshi de Silva and Ranasinghe with two slower balls.Opener Hasini, the third wicket to fall in the morning, was the early aggressor in Sri Lanka’s powerplay and didn’t rein herself in despite the early wicket of Athapaththu. She struck five fours in her innings, and was the second-highest scorer for Sri Lanka. Nilakshi, who top-scored with 43, hung in as Sri Lanka’s middle order tried to rebuild but fell late in the innings to Renuka’s off-pace full ball.Sri Lanka had a few partnerships bubbling through the innings, but none that would help them dominate a significant portion of the innings. Out of the first five stands, three crossed the double digits but ended before the 20-run mark. The highest partnership of the innings came for the sixth wicket with Nilakshi and wicketkeeper Anushka Sanjeewani (18) adding 47 runs off 91 balls. Sri Lanka lost their last five wickets in 40 runs.India used eight bowlers in all, with part-timer Shafali also getting a bowl. Harmanpreet’s use of herself was the most impressive; she just 13 runs in seven overs and picked up a wicket. Even though Meghna Singh could not get a scalp in her eight overs, her economy of 2.87 was a positive takeaway for India. And thus began a new era for India in a post-Mithali Raj world, with a victory in their first match of the latest ICC Women’s Championship cycle.

Zimbabwe seal series victory after Raza and Chakabva script thrilling comeback

Coming together at 49 for 4 in a chase of 292, the fifth-wicket pair put on a rollicking 201-run stand

Sikandar Raza’s second successive unbeaten century and captain Regis Chakabva’s 102 off just 75 balls fired Zimbabwe to a five-wicket win over Bangladesh to complete their first ODI series win against a major team in five years. Raza had earlier taken 3 for 56 to help restrict the visitors to 290-9 after a blistering start, and his calculated approach in the chase, punctuated by breathtaking shots, gave a full house at the Harare Sports Club a Sunday to remember. Two days after his 192-run fourth-wicket stand with Innocent Kaia had taken Zimbabwe to a five-wicket win in the first ODI, Raza had the company of Chakabva while scripting another challenging chase. Chakabva made his maiden ODI hundred, which, coming up in just 73 balls, was the fastest by a Zimbabwe batter in ODIs. Coming together at a precarious 49 for 4, Raza and Chakabva added 201 for the fifth wicket, off just 189 balls. It was only the third 200-plus stand in Zimbabwe’s ODI history, and their highest for the fifth wicket. Raza has now been involved in two of the three 200-plus stands.Bangladesh fined 40% match fee

ICC Match Referee Andy Pycroft imposed the sanction after Tamim Iqbal’s side was ruled to be “two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration” in the second ODI.

Players are fined 20% match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the stipulated time, according to article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players.

The end came swiftly even though Chakabva fell with Zimbabwe still needing 41 to win. But debutant Tony Munyonga, after a nervous start, cracked Shoriful Islam for a four and two sixes in the 47th over, after Taskin Ahmed dropped him at the start of the over. The over ended with Munyonga dropped once again, at point.Zimbabwe started their 291-run chase worse than how they started their 304-run chase in the first ODI. Hasan Mahmud had both Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Kaia caught behind within the first three overs. Wessly Madhevere was lbw to Mehidy Hasan Miraz, before Taijul Islam made it 49 for 4 when Tadiwanashe Marumani was caught in the covers in the left-arm spinner’s first over.Sikandar Raza did the repair job for Zimbabwe for the second ODI in a row•Associated Press

But Raza stepped up once again. He hardly allowed the Bangladesh bowlers to settle despite the required rate hovering around the 7.50 mark as early as the 24th over. Raza first attacked Mahmud, Bangladesh’s best bowler till that point, with a four and a six in the 20th over.Raza and Chakabva went after Shoriful Islam next, taking him for three boundaries in the 25th over. In the next over, however, Bangladesh missed a run-out opportunity, with the bowler Mehidy Hasan Miraz failing to connect the ball with the stumps at the non-striker’s end, after the throw came in from short fine-leg. There was a huge cheer when Raza walked back to the crease upon finding out that he was not out.Rather than taking their time to gather their wits for a few overs, Raza and Chakabva followed up the run-out scare by hitting three sixes in the next three overs. Then Chakabva brought the crowd to their feet when he smashed Taskin Ahmed for four fours in a row in the 30th over. The pair reached their individual hundreds in the 43nd over. Raza rushed for his umpteenth brace and completed his Michael-Slater-like celebration. Two balls later, Chakabva smashed Mahmud for a six high over midwicket. His celebration was one of relief.Tamim Iqbal gave Bangladesh a bright start•AFP/Getty Images

Zimbabwe more or less dominated the whole game. They kept Bangladesh on a leash through the middle overs, ensuring they didn’t reach 300 despite productive first and third powerplays. Captain Tamim Iqbal struck ten fours and a six in a 45-ball 50 as the visitors raced to 62 without loss in their first ten overs. The left-hander timed the ball sweetly square of the wicket on the off side, including an upper-cut six off Brad Evans. Tamim also drove the ball well down the ground, but his innings was cut short when his hoick of Tanaka Chivanga found the square-leg fielder.Tamim’s dismissal slowed down the Bangladesh innings. Despite a 50-run third-wicket stand between Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Hossain Shanto, their run rate hovered around the 5.5 mark. Mahmudullah’s 82-run fifth wicket stand with Afif Hossain recovered the pace of the innings, but they had to play within themselves to an extent with the danger of a wicket exposing Bangladesh’s long tail too early.Mahmudullah, however, managed to strike three sixes in the last four overs as Bangladesh made 84 runs in their last 10. It was five less than they had scored in the same phase of the first ODI, but there was a bit more thud in the way they batted in the last few overs.Zimbabwe’s offspinners gave them five crucial wickets, between Raza’s 3 for 56 and part-timer Madhevere’s 2 for 40. Victor Nyauchi and Tanaka Chivanga bowled well within themselves, though Luke Jongwe and Brad Evans went wicketless. But the home side could afford those errors since Raza and Chakabva had them covered, well and truly.

Sheffield United in talks to sign incredible ace who’s better than Charles

Chris Wilder welcomed ten new faces to his Sheffield United camp last transfer window as the Blades boss went about putting together a squad that could challenge for an instant promotion back up to the Premier League.

He looks to have assembled just that with the South Yorkshire outfit very much in the Championship automatic promotion reckoning heading into some crucial games to come, which is an admirable feat considering his side are still fresh off finishing rock bottom of the pile in the top-flight on a miserable 16 points.

Now, he will want his side to immediately jump back up a league and prove that they belong in the elite division, with a potential January signing showing they certainly mean business.

Sheffield United in for ex-Premier League winner

As per a recent report from Turkish outlet Fanatik – as has been relayed by Sport Witness – the promotion chasers have reignited their interest in former England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with discussions now taking place between the ex-Liverpool midfielder’s agent and the Championship side.

Having been linked with the experienced 31-year-old in the summer window, it now looks as if a deal could be back on the table at some point this month, with his current employers Beskitas also wanting to get rid as his minutes have depleted this season playing in Turkey.

Previously lifting the Premier League title aloft with the Reds, this could be seen as a coup on the end of the second-tier side in winning Oxlade-Chamberlain, who also has alleged interest from French outfit Nantes away from Wilder’s men sniffing around.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

What Oxlade-Chamberlain could offer

Landing the former Champions League winner might mean United’s interest in picking up Southampton youngster Shea Charles is short-lived, with the Sheffield Star reporting recently that Charles was being looked at as a fresh midfield addition for the Blades despite playing for Sheffield Wednesday this season on loan.

After all, a player of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s calibre joining would be seen as a major upgrade on snapping up the loan services of the former Owls number 44, regardless of Charles’ breakout moment in the spotlight at Hillsborough.

Charles will no doubt go on to have a successful career in the game, having notched up one goal and four assists centrally for Danny Rohl’s men this season in league action, before finding his loan stay was cut short.

But, Wilder might well want the finished article in the here and now over winning himself a promising youngster, with Oxlade-Chamberlain’s versatility to play in a whole plethora of different positions also boosting his injury-depleted team significantly.

Crazily, Oxlade-Chamberlain has lined up in ten different positions across the course of his varied playing days, with Wilder wanting to utilise him in his preferred central midfield role with Ollie Arblaster sidelined for the foreseeable.

But, away from adding depth in a position that has also seen Tom Davies struggle with fitness, Oxlade-Chamberlain could fill in wherever at a moment’s notice and put in a competent performance which will alleviate some selection headaches for the United boss.

One concern would be that Oxlade-Chamberlain’s “incredible” days at Liverpool – as he was once described by Jurgen Klopp – are far behind now, but he showed there was still life in his legs last season with Beskitas seen in the sublime solo strike above.

He would bow out from the 2023/24 season with four goals and one assist next to his name in league action, with his prowess in attack also a big draw as to why Wilder might try and snap him up shortly.

Liverpool's former midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Whilst Charles might be the flavour of the month in the second tier, United would undoubtedly show to others in the Championship they’re serious about promotion if a deal for the four-time FA Cup winner materialised.

£11m attacker who’s scored 52 career goals could be moving back to Leeds

Leeds United could be about to bring back an £11m attacking player to Elland Road, according to one journalist.

Leeds remain patient in January transfer window

The Whites are top of the Championship and on course to win promotion to the Premier League at the second time of asking under Daniel Farke.

However, despite leading the way in the second tier, it is turning into a four-horse promotion battle alongside Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland, all of which have bolstered their squads with new signings.

The end for Wilfried Gnonto: Leeds plotting late move for "huge talent"

Leeds United could be about to land a target who could end Wilfried Gnonto’s time at Elland Road.

ByEthan Lamb Jan 29, 2025

Leeds are yet to make a 2025 addition, although Farke previously admitted that a centre-back, attacking midfielder and centre-forward are positions Leeds could still strengthen in, saying: “There are still a few positions we could have a deeper look at if they can improve the squad. But right now, I’m a little bit more calmer with not being in panic mode with the need to have to do something.

“I think it’s fair to say if there is a creative offensive player out there, like a number 10 position, then it is something that could be beneficial for our group.

“Brenden Aaronson has been excellent this season and a key player for us. But we might have a similar player like him in our group. Of course we have players who can play in this role.

“If there is a solution for a creative midfield player it definitely make sense to stay awake. In all the other areas we are covered. The only two [positions] we have to stay awake in my head is the centre-back position… and perhaps a bit in the striker position.”

In recent days, Leeds have taken Liverpool youngster Oakley Cannonier on trial at Thorp Arch, and there have also been links to Newcastle United full-back Matt Targett.

It could go down to the wire in regards to if a new signing is secured by the 49er Enterprises, but a familiar face could well return to Yorkshire, going off a new update.

Jack Harrison could make Leeds return

Sharing a Leeds transfer update for The Daily Mail, relayed by Caught Offside, journalist Ian Herbert said that Leeds want a striker, left-back centre-back, central midfielder and winger.

That winger could well be Jack Harrison, currently on loan at Everton, with Herbert stating the 28-year-old “may be the one heading to Leeds”.

“They [Leeds] badly want a striker – [draw against Burnley] revealed why – and also seek a left-back, centre-back, central midfielder and winger.

“If they had to put it all on one, it would be a striker, but PSR means they could end up with none. Aston Villa’s Emi Buendia didn’t want to go to Leeds, preferring Bayer Leverkusen on loan. Brighton’s Julio Enciso preferred a loan move to Ipswich.

“Jack Harrison, shot on confidence after a torrid period on loan at Everton, may be the one heading to Leeds.”

Jack Harrison for Everton

Things haven’t gone to plan for Harrison during his second season on loan at Everton, failing to score or provide an assist in 21 games in all competitions.

Harrison, who cost Leeds £11m from Manchester City, has also been an unused substitute under new Everton boss David Moyes for the last two wins against Tottenham and Brighton, so a return to Elland Road could make sense for all involved.

Granted, Leeds ideally could do with a central attacker to rival Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph or a number 10 to challenge Brenden Aaronson, but a fresh returning face in Harrison may have to do for the second half of the season.

Jess Kerr, Penfold, Down return for New Zealand's tour of West Indies

Rosemary Mair, Claudia Green, Jess McFadyen have been left out of the squad that won bronze at the Commonwealth Games

Fast bowlers Jess Kerr and Molly Penfold and batter Lauren Down have returned to New Zealand’s squad for the tour of West Indies starting September 16. The trio replaced bowlers Claudia Green, Rosemary Mair and wicketkeeper-batter Jessica McFadyen from the squad that won the bronze medal at the inaugural Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last month.Jess Kerr had withdrawn from the competition in Birmingham because of a foot injury while Down had taken time off to prioritise her well-being.”We’ve seen the success Jess has enjoyed on the international stage in her career to date and it’s been encouraging to see her working her way back from injury, and training with the London Spirit over here in the Hundred in recent weeks,” Ben Sawyer, New Zealand head coach, said. “It’s great to see Lauren return after taking some personal time away from the game. She was flying with the bat heading into the ODI World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year only to be ruled out of the tournament with that thumb injury. So we’re looking forward to welcoming her back into the environment.”Penfold had made her international debut last year against England and was part of New Zealand’s reserves for the World Cup earlier this year. “I first saw Molly bowling when I was working with Australia at the ODI World Cup and remember telling them how good I thought she was, just from watching her practice,” Sawyer, who was Australia’s fast bowling coach at the World Cup, said. “You could see she had all the natural attributes for fast bowling and I’ve been sent a few videos of her recent progress – she seems to be going really well.”Teenagers Izzy Gaze, Georgia Plimmer and Fran Jonas kept their places in the squad and so did Eden Carson, the offspinner. While Gaze was New Zealand’s preferred wicketkeeper at the Commonwealth Games, Carson impressed in the two matches she played, and Plimmer gave a glimpse of her attacking style on her debut against Australia in the semi-final, where she hit three fours in her 17-run knock.New Zealand with their bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games•Getty Images

Sawyer, who was the coach of Birmingham Phoenix – led by Sophie Devine – at the Women’s Hundred, said that Hayley Jensen’s inputs from the West Indies, where she played for Trinbago Knight Riders in the Women’s 6ixty and now is part of the inaugural Women’s Caribbean Premier League, also helped in preparing for the tour.”Hayley Jensen is already over in the Caribbean playing in the CPL and she said the conditions are extremely hot and the wickets are keeping a little low – so that’s what we can expect,” Sawyer said. While Devine, Suzie Bates, Amelia Kerr, Jess Kerr, Lea Tahuhu and Maddy Green were involved in the Hundred, and Jensen is in the West Indies already, the other players had a camp in Lincoln, with assistant coach Sara McGlashan overlooking the preparations. Having done well at the Commonwealth Games by beating England to win the bronze medal, New Zealand’s next big goal is the T20 World Cup in South Africa early next year.”I know the team took a lot of confidence from winning that bronze-medal match against England,” Sawyer said. “To do it in front of a packed house at Edgbaston and to do it so convincingly will have given the whole unit so much belief.”This tour will be important for us to continue building on the good work done in England. We’ll of course be out to win both series in the Caribbean – but will also be looking to offer opportunities to different players as we try and nail down our combinations for the T20 World Cup and refine our game-plans.”We’ll also be giving the one-day series plenty of attention, having identified that as the format most in need of improvement.”New Zealand and West Indies play three ODIs – part of the ICC Women’s Championship – followed by five T20Is. All the games will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. This is the first time New Zealand are touring the Caribbean since 2014, when the hosts won the ODIs 4-0 while New Zealand won the T20Is 2-1.Squad: Sophie Devine (capt), Suzie Bates, Eden Carson, Lauren Down, Izzy Gaze, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Hayley Jensen, Fran Jonas, Jess Kerr, Amelia Kerr, Molly Penfold, Georgia Plimmer, Hannah Rowe, Lea Tahuhu
