Glasgow Rangers recorded a stunning 4-1 away victory against OGC Nice in the Europa League on Thursday evening. Can this result prove to be a catalyst for the Light Blues ahead of the busy festive season?

There is no doubt Philippe Clement is still under pressure despite the win, as more consistency is required amid a run of dismal results and performances.

Indeed, the club have won only two of their previous five Premiership fixtures, which has seen them slip out of contention, currently occupying third place in the league table, 11 points behind Celtic at the summit.

Change is required urgently. The announcement of Patrick Stewart as the new CEO is a step in the right direction.

It is no secret that the club’s problems start from the very top. James Bisgrove left his role as CEO in May and Stewart’s arrival on December 16 is the first of the club replacing him.

This lack of hierarchy has clearly impacted the running of the club in recent months. Hopefully, the new appointment will be the start of something new.

Rangers’ Interim Chairman, John Gilligan, praised the incoming CEO, saying: “On behalf of the board, I’m delighted to welcome Patrick to the club as CEO.

“Patrick comes with an excellent reputation and background, bringing extensive experience of operating at senior levels during his 20-plus years in football.

“The board continues in discussions with several excellent candidates for the role of Chairperson and expect to make an announcement of an appointment in the coming weeks.”

Stewart spent a large portion of his career at Manchester United, working with Sir Alex Ferguson, first as a General Counsel and Company Secretary, before joining the board of directors in 2019.

This culminated in Stewart becoming the CEO of United last year, and it appears as though the Light Blues have managed to secure a major coup by appointing the Scot.

He faces a massive challenge to turn around a faltering side, however. With the January transfer window opening soon, will he be able to work his magic?

Who Rangers must sell in January

Having spent millions during the summer transfer window, if Clement wishes to bolster his squad for the second half of the season, a few players must be moved on.

Kieran Dowell is a prime candidate. His contract expires in 2026, which means January is the last real chance for the Gers to properly cash in on the midfielder, who has played just ten times for the club this term.

Perhaps more of an unrealistic option, but could James Tavernier also be moved on in the winter window? The captain was dropped to the bench for the fourth time in six games for the away clash against Nice.

Dujon Sterling was outstanding in his place. Like Dowell, Tavernier’s deal expires in 18 months, which could suggest cashing in at the start of the year is the most logical option.

One plyer that must be sold, however, is Rabbi Matondo, who has spent more time on the treatment table than out on the pitch for the Ibrox side.

The Light Blues were coming off a season which saw them not only win the Scottish Cup but also reach the final of the Europa League, losing on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville.

To build on this, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst spent millions on signing Antonio Colak, Ridvan Yilmaz and Ben Davies to improve his squad.

Another player brought in was Matondo, who joined from Schalke for a fee in the region of £3m having shone for Cercle Brugge during 2021/22.

His move to Rangers was praised by fellow Welshman and former Celtic striker John Hartson, who was speaking on Go Radio, saying:

High praise indeed. Considering he was only 21 upon his arrival in Glasgow, the winger had plenty of potential to be a future star for the club.

Two and a half years later, things haven’t quite worked out as planned…

He registered five assists in those games, but it was hardly the form of someone who cost £3m to bring in.

It looked like Michael Beale was ready to move him on in the summer of 2023, but he looked rejuvenated during the first few weeks of the season. He scored against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League and this goal looked like it could be the start of something impressive.

A few weeks later, he suffered a knee injury which kept him out for several weeks, but he did net a stunning last-gasp equaliser against Celtic at Ibrox in March.

While he may be able to produce moments of magic, the consistency levels simply aren’t there for the player to shine regularly for the Light Blues.

This season, for example, Matondo has scored twice and registered three assists in just six matches, which, on the surface, is superb.

However, a hamstring injury suffered a few months ago has kept the player out since the beginning of September, and it looks like he is still a couple of weeks away from returning.

For this reason, Stewart should be actively looking to cash in on the 24-year-old when January comes around. If they can secure a decent fee for the winger, then it could give Clement some funds to improve other areas of the team.

Stewart’s task is a tough one, but if he gets off to a good start, then his appointment could be the start of something good for Rangers.

Hosting India is a lucrative proposition for any board and Shah said honouring bilateral commitments was particularly important in a post-Covid world.”The BCCI has always stood by member boards and helped them in these difficult times,” Shah said. “The board firmly believes in honouring its bilateral commitments. We are committed to our fans here in India and it is absolutely important that we safeguard our home season. Ipswich Town have been on an incredible roller coaster over the last few years.

Kieran McKenna took the reins in late 2021 and led them from League One all the way to the Premier League in just two and a half seasons.

The Tractor Boys repaid the Northern Irishman for his brilliant efforts in the summer transfer window by bringing in talented additions like Liam Delap, Sammie Szmodics and Jens Cajuste, who are all vitally important to the club’s goal of beating the drop.

However, while the majority of the summer additions have already paid off, it would be fair to say a few have struggled, including Kalvin Phillips and someone else, someone who might have been a mistake.

Phillips' Ipswich struggles

Following a diabolical short-term loan to West Ham United last season that saw Phillips make ten appearances, lose six games, pick up a red card and then return to Manchester City early, there were serious questions about his next move.

Fortunately for him, Ipswich thought they saw an opportunity to bring someone to Portman Road with plenty of Premier League experience and a point to prove, so in mid-August, they signed the former Leeds United captain on a season-long loan.

Initially, while he wasn’t anywhere near his impressive best, the 31-capped international looked like he’d be a useful enough player to have in and around the squad, but then away to Leicester City, he got himself sent off and essentially cost the club what would have been their first win in an early relegation six-pointer.

The Leeds-born midfielder hasn’t featured at all since that incident, but there is a feeling that, given his incredible experience and undeniable talent, he could still play an important role as the season proceeds, even if it’s not as a regular starter.

However, while there is reason to be hopeful about Phillips’ future in East Anglia, the same cannot be said about another of the club’s significant summer signings.

The Ipswich signing worse than Phillips

So, with most of Ipswich’s summer signings already accounted for, it should come as no surprise that the potential flop in question is Jack Clarke.

Now, we say ‘potential’ as it’s still probably a little early to say anything with absolute certainty, but as things stand, it’s not looking good.

The Tractor Boys agreed to pay Sunderland £15m for the “unplayable” attacker, as pundit Adrian Clarke dubbed him, and considering he’d scored 26 goals and provided 18 assists in just 92 games for the Black Cats across the last two seasons, it looked like a brilliant deal.

However, since making his move to Suffolk, the former Leeds United gem has not looked anything like the utterly sensational player who had been tearing Championship defences to shreds for the last two years.

For example, in his 14 appearances to date, which amount to 559 minutes of action, the 24-year-old has failed to score a goal and has provided just a single assist, which isn’t good enough.

Moreover, it’s not just the lack of output that’s worrying, but also his general play, with the defeat to Crystal Palace a good example, as the East Anglian Daily Times’ Alex Jones awarded him a 5/10 match rating and lamented him for how he ‘lost the ball too often.’

Ultimately, Clarke’s exploits for Sunderland over the last few years were nothing short of extraordinary.

That said, he has been immensely disappointing for Ipswich so far, and considering the fee he cost, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if McKenna regrets his decision to sign him.

Surrey head coach Gareth Batty has confirmed that Sam Curran’s return to full bowling fitness is on track despite the England allrounder’s limited workload.Curran has sent down just 10 competitive overs since his Surrey return three weeks ago, following six months out with a stress fracture of the back.Those overs all came on the opening day of Surrey’s LV= Insurance County Championship match against Somerset at the Kia Oval on April 21, meaning that Curran did not bowl in the subsequent matches Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire.Curran has already been ruled out for England’s upcoming three-Test series against New Zealand, which begins on June 2, while Chris Woakes is also an injury doubt for that first Test at Lord’s after struggling with injury – particularly to his shoulder and knee – since the end of an arduous winter campaign.Batty has confirmed that Curran is still fully engaged in his recovery programme, which is being managed and monitored by the county in direct consultation with England’s medical and fitness staff.”Sam is centrally-contracted by the ECB so England are ultimately responsible for the detail of his return to bowling fitness work,” Batty said. “But despite not bowling in the last couple of matches he is doing his overs behind closed doors and that continues to go well.”What we all have to remember is that Sam is still a young player, and sometimes it’s hard to think he’s only 23.
