Annabel Sutherland’s half-century coupled with the key wicket of Alyssa Healy helped Melbourne Stars secure their first victory of the season against a Sydney Sixers side who chased poorly.Sutherland’s 57 off 50 balls laid the platform for Stars before Maia Bouchier provided late impetus with three boundaries off the last five balls she faced in a partnership of 51 with Kim Garth.Former Ireland allrounder Garth then struck in her first over to have Shafali Verma caught behind and Sixers’ chase never really got off the ground. Attempting to cut loose, Healy found deep midwicket against Sutherland in the sixth over.Ashleigh Gardner struggled for her usual tempo and was then well caught at point and the asking rate kept escalating before Tess Flintoff struck in consecutive deliveries.Ellyse Perry, who top-scored with 40 off 43 balls in a new role at No. 4, did not find the boundary between the 12th and 19th over by which time it was too late for Sixers.Stars had started positively in the powerplay before Gardner struck with her first delivery to remove Elyse Villani. Meg Lanning edged a drive against Stella Campbell and when Gardner also ended Sutherland’s solid innings, Stars were in danger of losing their way. They did not bring up their hundred until the first ball of the 17th over but Bouchier, the English overseas player, and Garth kept their cool to amass 40 from the last four overs which would prove game changing.

La Liga giants Real Madrid are “seriously” considering the sale of an illustrious player in the next transfer window, with Arsenal prepared to bid and at the forefront of the race for his signature.
Arsenal given selection headaches ahead of crucial Liverpool game
While sporting director Edu Gaspar weighs up the club’s next transfer swoops, in a bid to reinforce Mikel Arteta’s squad, the Spaniard is currently attempting to find a way around some real selection headaches before hosting Liverpool on Sunday.
Arteta thinks "exceptional" Real Madrid player would be perfect for Arsenal
The north Londoners could look to raid the Bernabeu.
ByEmilio Galantini Oct 23, 2024
There are fears that defender Riccardo Calafiori has suffered ligament damage, after he was forced off with 20 minutes left to play during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League earlier this week.
Meanwhile, it is believed Takehiro Tomiyasu is facing around a month on the sidelines after his knee injury flared up again recently. The Japan international had only just returned from a problem which kept him sidelined since pre-season, making a brief cameo against Southampton, but Tomiyasu is now set to be unavailable again for the foreseeable.
Arsenal expect Bukayo Saka to miss their clash against Liverpool, while it remains to be seen when club captain Martin Odegaard will return from his ankle injury. Another doubt ahead of this Sunday is defender Jurrien Timber, with the Dutchman missing Arsenal’s last few games after picking up a muscle problem recently.
Meanwhile, left-back Kieran Tierney remains out with a hamstring injury. Arteta has been dealt many fitness blows to key player since the beginning of the season, and Arsenal have done pretty well to cope with what can only be described as an injury crisis.
Reports have suggested that the north Londoners could look to the transfer market in an effort to sign much-needed strength in depth. Arsenal are reportedly looking to sign a back-up for Saka, with Bryan Mbeumo among their potential targets.
It is even believed by some sections of the press that Arsenal may lodge a bid for Atalanta defender Isak Hien, so there are a few options that Edu and co are considering as we approach the turn of the year.
Real Madrid forward Arda Guler is deemed by Arteta as a potential perfect Arsenal signing, according to some reports, as the Turkey international starlet weighs up his future at the Bernabeu.
Guler is by no means the only Real player on their radar, though, as an update from Spain claims this week.

The £200,000-per-week star could be close to saying goodbye to Madrid, and his next destination may well be the Premier League. It is believed Carlo Ancelotti’s side are “seriously” considering his sale in January, with Arsenal prepared to bid for Rodrygo and take advantage of this situation.
Both the Gunners and Liverpool are described as at the “forefront” of the race for Rodrygo, but it may not be an easy deal to pull off. There have been suggestions that the 23-year-old could cost around £136 million, which would shatter Arsenal’s transfer record, so it remains to be seen just how far Edu and co would be willing to go for a deal.

New Zealand still on course but India could pounce if they slip up

India Before the game against Afghanistan, India’s net run rate was -1.609; after the match, it has leapt up to 0.073, while Afghanistan’s has dropped from 3.097 to 1.481. If India win their last two games – against Scotland and Namibia – by a combined margin of 120 runs (scoring 180), their NRR will improve further to 1.303. In that case, Afghanistan’s rate will stay above India’s only if they beat New Zealand by at least 12 runs (after scoring 150).New Zealand, meanwhile, will be hoping to beat Namibia and improve their NRR, before their last game against Afghanistan. If India beat Scotland and New Zealand lose one of their last two matches, then India will have everything to play for against Namibia. India’s advantage is that they play the last game of the group, which means they will know exactly what they need to do to qualify.New Zealand New Zealand managed to get two points against Scotland, but the victory margin was narrower than they would have hoped for, which means their NRR only improved from 0.765 to 0.816. If they bat first, score 180, and win by 60 runs against Namibia, their NRR will be 1.391. However, even a one-run loss (chasing 150) against Afghanistan will reduce their rate to 1.094. That is an NRR that India can surpass with big wins in their last two games (as mentioned above).New Zealand can avoid all that NRR discussion if they win their last two games and finish on eight points. However, their schedule is a tough one: after playing in Dubai today, they travel to Sharjah for their game against Namibia on Friday, and then play Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. Afghanistan, meanwhile, have played their last two matches in Abu Dhabi, and have a three-day rest before taking on New Zealand at the same venue.Afghanistan Afghanistan’s NRR has taken a beating after that 66-run defeat to India. Hence, not only do they need to beat New Zealand, but they might also need to do so by a certain margin to factor in a huge win for India against Namibia the following day. As mentioned above, if India win their last two games by a combined margin of 120 runs, Afghanistan will need a 12-run victory margin against New Zealand to stay ahead of India (assuming first-innings scores of 180 for India and 150 for Afghanistan). The NRR situation would be clearer for them by Sunday, as both India and New Zealand would have played another game before that, on Friday. Also, Afghanistan have the advantage of a three-day rest and familiarity of venue, having played their last two games in Abu Dhabi.
Chelsea had yet another busy summer with Enzo Maresca’s first window as Chelsea manager bringing him 11 new players, whilst a further 11 left the club on a permanent basis, and 14 exited on loan.
The Blues spent a total of around £198.8m according to Transfermarkt, with the biggest move being Pedro Neto, who signed from Wolves for around £51.4m upfront, plus £2.6m in add-ons.
The Portugal international signed a seven-year deal with the club and has already made 14 appearances, scoring two goals and providing three assists.

The other signing made by Chelsea in this window on the flanks was Jadon Sancho, who joined on an initial loan deal from Manchester United, including an obligation to buy for a fee between £20-25m next summer. The 24-year-old winger has already made five appearances for the Blues, providing three assists in his 308 minutes played.
However, one area Chelsea did not manage to recruit was another striker to challenge Nicolas Jackson, after failed attempts for Samu Omorodion, Victor Osimhen, and Jhon Duran. This could see the Blues dip into the market in the January window or next summer, looking for a number nine.
Chelsea lead race to sign European goal machine
According to reports from the Daily Star, Chelsea will be leading the race for Sporting goal machine, Viktor Gyokeres next summer.
Manchester United are also said to be heavily interested, following the appointment of Sporting manager, Ruben Amorim, who has worked closely with the Swede for the past few seasons.
Analyst Ben Mattinson has described the 26-year-old striker as “monstrous”, and it’s hardly surprising when you consider he has the blend of being able to link with his teammates, run the channels, hurt teams in transition, and, of course, score goals.
The Swedish forward – who is said to be available for around £66m – has made 17 appearances for Sporting this season, already scoring 23 goals, providing four assists, and totalling 1,436 minutes played.

How Gyokeres compares to Nkunku
Chelsea’s two current striker options are doing well, with Jackson taking the starting spot in the side, making 11 appearances, scoring six goals, providing three assists, and totalling 813 minutes.
Nkunku, on the other hand, whilst still making 15 appearances so far this season, has found himself as the backup striker, starting cup competitions and coming from the bench in Premier League games. However, the Frenchman is clearly knocking on the door, scoring eight goals already.
So, how does he compare with Gyokeres? Well, it’s a resounding win for the former Coventry srikre who has so many desirable traits, not just scoring goals but also providing opportunities for others.

Both Gyokeres and Nkunku clearly offer clinical finishing in and around the box, as shown by their goals per 90, xG generated per 90, and goals/shot ratio.
However, Chelsea are clearly missing a profile of striker who can be more of a nuisance in the box, getting on the end of crosses, and helping them increase their box efficiency in that way.
Standing at 6 foot 1, with a bulkier frame than Jackson, Gyokeres gives that option, as he can win aerial battles due to his height and build, looking to score headers, but also drag defenders away with him in the box, creating space for others.
Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres
This could even see Nkunku used as more of a number ten, playing off the striker, where he excels. One thing is for sure, Jackson and Gyokeres as striker options would be right up there with the best in the Premier League if Chelsea can pull it off.

To put it lightly, this season has not been particularly enjoyable for Manchester United fans so far.
Erik ten Hag led the team to their worst start in Premier League history for the second campaign in a row, and while he wasn’t all that popular by the end, seeing your manager sacked is never an enjoyable experience.
With that said, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has seemingly stabilised the ship for incoming boss Ruben Amorim, and there are now genuine reasons to be optimistic about the club’s short and long-term future.
Even players who were massively underperforming at the start of the season are starting to look like their old selves, such as Bruno Fernandes, although the ex-Sporting CP boss could opt to replace the Red Devils’ captain before the start of next season to get his reign off to a fresh start.
The Bruno Fernandes question
The first thing to say is that Fernandes is an unbelievably talented footballer and, on his day, is arguably world-class. However, therein lies the problem; as many a United fan will probably attest, it’s rarely been their captain’s day this season.
For example, the Portuguese dynamo managed to rack up a sensational haul of 15 goals and 13 assists in 48 appearances last season, equating to an average of a goal involvement once every 1.71 games, and not a single one of those involvements came in the League Cup.
In contrast, while his overall tally of four goals and seven assists in 17 games this season looks impressive, it is instantly less so when you realise two of his goals and two of his assists came in League Cup matches against Barnsley and Leicester City, while another goal came against PAOK in the Europa League.

Moreover, before Van Nistelrooy took charge, it wasn’t unusual to come across United writers who were asking Ten Hag to take him out of the starting lineup, as he was struggling to offer much going forward and inexplicably managed to get himself sent off in back-to-back games.
Lastly, on top of only starting to perform following the sacking of the former manager, the Maia-born international is now on the wrong side of 30, and with Amorim at the helm and Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the boardroom, it feels like a massive rebuilding job is required.
Therefore, it would be wise of United to see what sort of money they can get for Fernandes in 2025 and use that to sign a former target to replace him, a target who looks set for a bright future.
United's potential Fernandes replacement
So, who’s this talented youngster previously linked to United who could replace Fernandes? Well, it’s Paris Saint-Germain wonderkid and current RB Leipzig loan star Xavi Simons.
Xavi Simons for RB Leipzig
He was touted for a potential €100m – £83m – move to Old Trafford, among other Premier League sides, a few months ago and while nothing materialised, Ratcliffe and Co should be back in for the young talent next year.
It’s certainly a lot of money for a 21-year-old, but over the last few years, he has shown the footballing world that he could be one of the sport’s next attacking superstars, and while some might point to his appearances out on the wing as a reason why he couldn’t replace the United captain, fear not.
While it’s true that the “complete” Amsterdam-born star, as dubbed by former teammate Dani Olmo, has made 50 appearances on the left in his career, he has also made 29 in attacking midfield and even 28 off the right.
Therefore, he is more than capable of playing wherever he’s asked, including the former Sporting star’s current position.
Moreover, his sensational record of producing goal involvements suggests he should have no problems impacting games regardless of his starting position.
For example, in just 48 appearances for PSV Eindhoven in the 22/23 campaign, he scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists.

Ultimately, United fans should expect the club to go through something of a rebuilding phase over the next few years, akin to Arsenal a few seasons ago, and to make sure it’s a rebuild that works, it makes perfect sense to move on the old guard like Fernandes to bring in the next generation of incredible talents, such as Simons.
