Breakthrough: Arsenal now reach £31m agreement to sign "monster" – Romano

Whilst they've not had the busiest summer, Arsenal have now reportedly reached a breakthrough in their deal to sign their second new reinforcement of the summer for Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal transfer news

Of course, those in North London didn't enter the summer window in desperate need for fresh faces like they have done so often in the past. This time around, fresh from competing for the Premier League title once more, the Arsenal squad just needed the fine-tuning that Riccardo Calafiori will help to add.

The central defender arrived from Bologna earlier this summer, having helped the Italian side shock the rest of Serie A by qualifying for the Champions League last season.

Shock twist: Arsenal race for £85m star who'd be their best CF since Auba

The goalscoring “monster” could fire the Gunners to the title.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Aug 22, 2024

The Gunners very much looked a side ready to compete yet again on the opening day of the Premier League campaign, easing past Wolverhampton Wanderers in a routine 2-0 victory, in which Bukayo Saka was predictably the star of the show.

Now, with just eight days left until deadline day, those at The Emirates are set to secure victory off the pitch. According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have finally reached a breakthrough in their deal to sign Mikel Merino, agreeing a deal worth €32m plus €5m in adds ons (£27m plus £4m) with Real Sociedad.

That said, even with a deal reportedly agreed, Arsenal fans will likely have to wait until after this weekend's Aston Villa clash to see their new man in action at the heart of Arteta's midfield.

"Monster" Merino could finally replace Xhaka

Whilst Arsenal enjoyed an impressive campaign even in the absence of Granit Xhaka, who swapped North London for an invincible Bundesliga title win with Bayer Leverkusen last summer, replacing the Swiss midfielder could become the key to unlocking crucial silverware at long last. And that's where Merino should play a part.

Analyst Ben Mattinson has been full of praise for the Euro 2024 winner this summer, describing Merino as an "aerial duel monster" and dubbing the Spaniard "press resistant".

For just £31m and a reported £52k-a-week, Merino could quickly turn into one of the bargains of the summer if he replaces Xhaka and adds backup for the likes of Declan Rice in one swoop. Fresh from winning the Euros too, the midfielder certainly knows all about the top prizes.

Attempting to make it a third time lucky in pursuit of stealing Manchester City's Premier League crown, Arsenal have looked to add quality over quantity in recent months.

Sunrisers' solidity and depth vs Knight Riders' versatility and flair in slow, turning Chennai

Keep an eye on: Morgan vs Bayliss, Warner’s fitness, Shakib’s form, and team combinations

Shashank Kishore10-Apr-20217:26

Will Knight Riders’ season depend on Russell’s form?

Big pictureEoin Morgan is in his first season as full-time captain of an IPL team. When he takes the field on Sunday in Chennai, he will not just square off against David Warner’s Sunrisers Hyderabad, but also against Trevor Bayliss, a close confidante who helped Morgan plot England’s white-ball renaissance, which culminated in their 2019 World Cup win. Not to forget, Bayliss was the Knight Riders’ coach between 2012 and 2015, when they won the IPL twice, before joining the Sunrisers. The Kolkata Knight Riders haven’t made the playoffs since 2018; their quest for the title stretches even further back to 2014. While many others would have chopped and changed, the core of the Knight Riders is still the same. Sunil Narine and Andre Russell are still as big, if not bigger, as the newer signings like Pat Cummins or Shakib Al Hasan, who has been brought back by the franchise after being part of two title wins in 2012 and 2014. Dinesh Karthik continues to be a key finisher, while they have Shubman Gill as potential retention material going forward.Related

KKR depend on new-look spin attack, old death-overs smarts

An IPL cloaked in a bubble of uncertainty

Among the few teams to conduct yearlong camps, the Knight Riders have a well-oiled Indian group of players, both in batting and in bowling. Kamlesh Nagarkoti was injured for two successive seasons, but has been persisted with. Shivam Mavi has also been retained despite a history of injuries. Their latest project is Varun Chakravarthy, the mystery spinner who broke into the Indian team based on his IPL 2020 performances, but has been let down by fitness issues. Can he build on his previous season?Over the last two seasons, the Knight Riders have somewhat been let down by their own strengths – the fluidity of the batting line-up has led to a hint of confusion. The three finishers in Morgan, Karthik and Russell have been shuffled around in the order. Maybe a bit more stability is the key for the team. The Sunrisers are among the more industrious sides, one that bank on collective work. Warner has empowered individuals, given the youngsters a long rope, and has been patient in developing a solid group of players, who’ve all thrived under his leadership. T Natarajan and Sandeep Sharma are prime examples.3:28

Are Sunrisers Hyderabad stronger than last season?

They will be boosted by Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return and Wriddhiman Saha’s emergence as a T20 opener. They also have two hungry individuals in Manish Pandey and Vijay Shankar, keen to prove a point after overcoming injuries in order to regain their berth in the national squad.Jonny Bairstow is in fine form, while they can also turn to the ever-reliable Kane Williamson if needed. Throw in the threat a Rashid Khan possesses and it makes for a heady cocktail that can trip up any opponent on a given day. The young group of Abdul Samad, Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma add to their batting riches. There are no clear favourites for this one. Just the promise of two solid teams, with very different philosophies and approaches, going head to head with the aim of starting on the right foot.In the news The match will test Warner’s fitness. Last month, Warner conceded that he had rushed back during the Test series against India following the groin injury he had suffered during the ODIs in December. Warner made himself available for the last two Tests in Sydney and Brisbane, when he was clearly still hampered by the injury. Another lengthy rehab was followed by an outing for New South Wales before he got on the plane to India for the IPL.This also marks Shakib’s return to the IPL, and to the Knight Riders. Last season, he was far away from the action as he was serving an ICC ban, and he starts out this time – if he gets in the XI – against the team he was with till before the suspension. His presence in the IPL this time hasn’t been uneventful either, as he opted for the Knight Riders gig over matches for Bangladesh, and the process was not without confusion.2:25

Will Andre Russell have a big season for KKR?

Likely XIs Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Rahul Tripathi/Venkatesh Iyer, 3 Nitish Rana, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6 Andre Russell, 7 Sunil Narine/Shakib Al Hasan, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Shivam Mavi/Harbhajan Singh, 10 Prasidh Krishna, 11 Varun Chakravarthy Sunrisers Hyderabad:1 David Warner (capt), 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3 Manish Pandey, 4 Kane Williamson, 5 Vijay Shankar/Abhishek Sharma, 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Sandeep Sharma, 11 T NatarajanStrategy puntHarbhajan Singh has played much of his IPL cricket recently at Chepauk for the Chennai Super Kings. Friday’s opener at the venue threw up a slow black-soil-based surface that gripped and spun. Singh had been used regularly with the new ball by MS Dhoni, particularly against the left-handers. With Warner likely to open, there’s a case for Morgan to turn to Harbhajan with the new ball too. There’s good reason, too. The senior offspinner has dismissed Warner four times in the IPL.At IPL 2020, Warner struck at 133 in the powerplay, considerably slower than his overall record. While there may be a temptation to play Saha, who enhanced his reputation as an opener in IPL 2020, it could potentially be advantageous to open with the in-form Bairstow. The England wicketkeeper has struck for the Sunrisers at 142, and he’s in red-hot form too, having just been named Player of the Series during the ODI series against India.Stats that matter The Sunrisers haven’t won in three attempts in Chennai. The Knight Riders haven’t fared any better, losing seven out of their nine games here. One of those wins, however, gave them their maiden IPL crown in 2012. Warner’s 1240 runs in 28 innings is the second-most after KL Rahul since IPL 2019. He needs 88 more against the Knight Riders to become the first batsman to score 1000 runs against an IPL opponent.

Spurs star who dropped a 5/10 at St James’ Park was not good enough

It's safe to say that this has not been a rip-roaring start to the new season for Tottenham Hotspur. They may have dispatched Everton with some aplomb but they have now dropped points to Leicester City and Newcastle United.

The draw with Leicester across the opening round of fixtures was painful but the 2-1 loss at St James' Park on Sunday afternoon will no doubt sting even more.

Spurs arguably had the better chances, hitting the bar and constantly getting into promising positions courtesy of wide players Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson.

However, their defensive susceptibilities came back to bite them on a ground where, let's be honest, they've been pretty dreadful in recent years.

Remember that 6-1 defeat? Of course, you do. Things weren't quite as bad this time around obviously but it still left plenty to be desired.

Why Tottenham lost to Newcastle

A lack of end product could be blamed for Spurs' defeat on Tyneside. After all, they only found the net courtesy of an own goal from Dan Burn.

It was Johnson who was crucial to that goal and he was a big threat when he came on at half time, attempting three crosses and completing both of his two dribble attempts.

However, there wasn't much forthcoming from his fellow winger in summer signing Odobert. The Frenchman was a threat but that final pass was missing on too many occasions. He created just one key pass and missed a 'big chance' of his own,

It was ultimately their defensive performance that let them down the most. Players were caught out of position for both goals, scored in the first 45 minutes by Harvey Barnes and then in the second period by Alexander Isak, a man who has proven himself to be a constant thorn in Tottenham's backline over the years.

While standing out in moments, Cristian Romero must share some of the blame for Sunday's dropped points.

Cristian Romero's performance in numbers

Romero is one the most elusive football players going. On his day, the Argentine is a titan at the back and he pops up with pretty important moments in the final third too, scoring against Everton last week.

However, he's also rash and hot-headed, the first trait we saw for both goals conceded by Postecoglou's men.

For the first, Romero went sprinting out of the backline to press the Newcastle midfield but in the process of forcing a throw-in, Eddie Howe's side took it quickly. Where did the ball go? Exactly where the Spurs defender should have been, with the delivery sent straight into the path of Barnes who fired home.

He was arguably more at fault for the second. Once more he was caught straying out of position which left an acre of space in behind for Newcastle to capitalise on. Capitalise they did.

Jacob Murphy darted onto a ball and then slid it across the face of the goal for Isak who was handed a tap-in. That moment drew notable criticism from the Sky Sports commentary team, who stated: "Truly dreadful, you can't ball watch, you've got to drop off. Romero just seems to be watching the ball, he's got no idea where Murphy is. Udogie gets sucked in too."

Romero's performance was also aptly summed up by Football.London's Alasdair Gold. The reporter handed him a 5/10 match rating, writing that he 'defended well until the goal when he was caught out of position after pressing up the pitch. Caught flat-footed for the second goal as well.'

So, two moments where the defender lost his concentration cost his team today and Spurs will now have to stew on this one for two weeks until the Premier League returns following the international break.

India women players finally set to receive T20 World Cup prize money

The BCCI on Monday asked the players to raise invoices to get their share

Nearly 15 months after they finished runners-up in the T20 World Cup, the India Women squad will finally receive its share of the prize money amounting to USD 500,000 (INR 3.5 crore approximately). ESPNcricinfo has learned that the BCCI on Monday asked the players to raise invoices to get their shares. The development comes a day after the UK publication revealed that the squad had not yet been paid its prize money despite other teams including Australia, who won the World Cup, receiving theirs soon after the tournament was over.ESPNcricinfo has learned that the ICC disbursed the prize money to the BCCI last March, around a week after the World Cup final, which was played in front of a record 86,174 spectators on International Women’s Day (March 8) at the MCG.When asked for a comment, BCCI officials told ESPNcricinfo they have no knowledge of the reason behind the delay. ESPNcricinfo confirmed the delay with more than one player and support staff member who were part of the India squad led by Harmanpreet Kaur. The delay raised eyebrows because the BCCI is learned to have disbursed all other payments owed to the players since March 2020. This includes three instalments of their central contracts fee for 2019-20, match fees, and appearance fees for the Women’s T20 Challenge in Sharjah last November. Recently the players are understood to have submitted their invoices for match fees for the limited-overs home series against South Africa in March 2021. The payments are still awaited, though.Incidentally the BCCI is learned to have distributed the prize money allocated by the ICC to the India team that finished runners-up in the 2020 Men’s Under-19 World Cup, which was won by Bangladesh last February in South Africa. The Women’s T20 World Cup took place only a few weeks later. According to , the victorious Australia Women players received their share of the prize money amounting to USD 1.6 million soon after the tournament.

After Sterling: Arsenal looking to sign another £325k-p/w ex-Man City star

Arsenal have been linked with an audacious swoop to land another former Manchester City man as they look to hand Mikel Arteta the tools to finally clinch the Premier League title.

Arsenal lay down marker against Tottenham

Heading into the north London Derby with several key parts of their squad missing through injury or suspension, Arsenal came away with a 1-0 win courtesy of a header from Gabriel, ensuring that they moved to second in the Premier League after four games.

Mikel Arteta just did something for the first time in 35 years at Arsenal

Arsenal are on quite the run of form against their local neighbours.

ByMatt Dawson Sep 16, 2024

Despite missing the likes of Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, a professional defensive performance ensured that Tottenham never created any major chances, while the Gunners took advantage of their set-piece superiority to grab the only goal of the game midway through the second half, as Gabriel nodded home.

There may still be question marks about whether the Gunners can truly maintain a third consecutive title push, but they have begun the season in imperious form and could only improve as squad players return.

And they have been linked with a move to sign yet another former Manchester City star in a bid to further bolster their ranks in the months and years to come, having already added Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko in recent seasons.

Arsenal keen on ex-Man City "machine"

Now, it has emerged that Arsenal are one of a trio of clubs “closely monitoring” Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane with a view to making a move in the next two transfer windows.

Sane is down to the final 12 months of his £325,000 a week deal in Bavaria, and is yet to agree a new contract with the German giants, where he has featured 175 times since his arrival from Manchester City.

It is claimed that “Bayern Munich have opened negotiations with him to renew it”, but “those talks could collapse” because “Sane’s salary will have to be cut” in order for him to remain in Bavaria.

That has led to Arsenal, Newcastle United and Liverpool all positioning to potentially land him on a cut-price deal in January, or a free transfer in the summer, should those negotiations continue to prove fruitless.

He is yet to feature this season, having undergone groin surgery over the summer and only returning to training just before the international break. There could also be longer-term concerns over his position at the Allianz Arena too, with Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, Mathys Tel and summer addition Michael Olise all fighting it out for the two wide spots for Vincent Kompany’s side.

He has come in for plenty of praise during his time at the club though. In November 2023 Thomas Tuchel explained: “Physically he’s a machine. He can implement our instructions like almost nobody else. As well as his talent, his physical condition is top-class.”

However, with Sterling’s loan move at Arsenal coming to an end in the summer of 2025, a free transfer to sign Sane could prove the perfect replacement, with one former Manchester City man replacing another in north London.
