If the men’s Asia Cup goes ahead this year, it will likely take place in Sri Lanka. The hope is that the tournament will be played in September.Although it is technically Pakistan’s turn to host the Asia Cup this year, the PCB offered SLC to swap hosting years at an Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting earlier this week, with SLC handing over hosting rights for the 2022 Asia Cup. With India-Pakistan relations being frosty at present, the PCB cannot feasibly host a tournament involving India. Additionally, Sri Lanka appears to have the Covid-19 pandemic under the most control out of the potential host nations. There is, however, substantial doubt if the tournament will go ahead as planned, largely due to the restrictions and logistical hurdles posed by the pandemic. Hosting a multi-team tournament would clearly require an exponentially greater level of medical arrangements, to say nothing of the travel restrictions that each team will face. At present, SLC has been trying desperately, but has been unable to even confirm bilateral home series against India and Bangladesh that had been slated for the middle of the year. An Asia Cup, which generally sees at least six teams competing, seems far off.Sri Lanka has not hosted an Asia Cup since 2010, but will relish the opportunity to showcase the country as a safe place to play, to a regional audience. The ACC’s executive council has not approved the swap of host nations yet, but is expected to confirm hosting plans before the end of the month.

Sarwan has “categorically” denied he had any role to play Gayle being released by the Tallawahs

Calling the allegations levelled against him by Chris Gayle as “scandalous”, former West Indies batsman and Jamaica Tallawahs assistant coach Ramnaresh Sarwan has “categorically” denied he had any role to play in the former being released by the franchise for the 2020 season of the Caribbean Premier League.”I categorically deny any involvement in the decision or the decision-making process, which led to Gayle’s non-selection to represent the Jamaica Tallawahs in the 2020 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Tournament,” Sarwan said in a two-page statement he issued on his Facebook account on Thursday.Sarwan’s reaction comes a day after the Tallawahs issued their own statement on Gayle’s release, saying the decision was made “collectively by the Ownership and Management team which did not include Mr. Ramnaresh Sarwan and based purely on business and cricketing reasoning.”Gayle was subsequently hired by the St Lucia Zouks for CPL 2020, which is scheduled to be played in August-September.On Monday, Gayle recorded his outburst in a personal video on YouTube where he pinned the blame primarily on Sarwan and the Tallawahs management led by its owner Kris Persaud and chief executive Jeff Miller for “playing a game” with him and never informing him about their plans to release him. Gayle claimed that the news of his release was given to him by the CPL authorities who did not find his name on the final list of retention by the Tallawahs. Gayle said Sarwan had a big role in his ouster and called him a “snake”, “deceitful” and “distrustful” person. Gayle even told Sarwan on the video that he “was done with him” and would tell him that next time the pair met in person.Sarwan said Gayle’s outburst was “quite unfortunate” and the only reason he came out with his own statement was to “protect the character” of people like him who he said were falsely accused.”In that video, he has levelled false allegations and tarnished the good name and reputation of a series of persons,” Sarwan said. “I was the focus of most of the onslaughts. I reply, not because I feel that Gayle’s rantings are worthy of it, but because I feel that the public’s record must be set straight and also, to protect the character and careers of so many people, whose image he sought to besmirch.”ALSO READ: Jamaica Tallawahs ‘weirdest’ team I’ve ever played for – Andre RussellSarwan expressed dismay and “shock” at his former long-time West Indies team-mate’s allegations. Sarwan had played in 249 international matches involving Gayle with their association going back to Under-19 days. “Let me make it abundantly clear, that I have played with Gayle from the inception of my international career and I have always respected him as an extraordinary talent, a colleague and most importantly, a close friend. Hence, my utter shock by these scandalous allegations.”Sarwan said Gayle was a dear friend known to his family and that he had even “rallied” behind the Jamaican when in 2016 there were calls to ban Gayle from cricket after he was involved in a sexism row while appearing to proposition a female journalist on live television during the Big Bash League.Gayle, who was hired as the marquee player and appointed captain by the Tallawahs, had said at the outset of the 2019 CPL season that Sarwan wanted to be head coach, but he told the Guyanese that he was “not fit” for that role as it entailed various requirements. According to Sarwan, Tallawahs had in fact appointed him as the head coach, a role he had not taken in 2018 because he wanted Mark O’ Donnell in the position, who had been with the franchise for a long time to be in charge.”In 2019, I was appointed Head Coach. I reached out to Chris and discussed with him, the selection of a team. I did so out of respect for him. In my conversation with Gayle about the team, he informed me that Donovan Miller, a Jamaican and a very close friend of Chris should be appointed Head Coach as he would better understand the culture of the Jamaican players. I conveyed Gayle’s view to the CEO, informing the CEO that I would be happy to step aside for Miller’s appointment given that Chris feels strongly about his appointment. My priority was what would be in the best interest of the team. Gayle is fully aware of the background, yet he accuses me of fighting to be Head Coach.”Gayle had also accused Sarwan of instigating the overseas players to “make a mockery” of him in front of younger players for not being present on training days, a routine he said he had followed in all T20 leagues around the world. Gayle admitted he had been “flipped” by the whispers and “put everyone in their place” during a “heated meeting” ahead of Tallawahs’ final match last year.”I absolutely reject Gayle’s allegation that I encouraged foreign players to disrespect him,” Sarwan said. “I really do not understand how he came to such a conclusion and this simply is not true.”Sarwan expressed “deep regret on this unfortunate saga” and wished Gayle good luck for his stint with the Zouks. However, Sarwan feared that Gayle might have set a wrong precedent in that young players might want to follow him in expressing disgruntlement in future in a similar fashion.”My deep concern, is that young and upcoming players who regard Gayle as a role model, may think that this is an acceptable way of addressing problems which may befall them in their careers.”

Ipswich Town's promotion up to the Premier League is arguably the stuff of fairytale, with the Tractor Boys facing off against Forest Green just last season in League One to now be faced with the surreal prospect of playing against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.
Only finishing a point shy of the top spot in the final Championship standings after Leicester City lost 2-0 on the final day to Blackburn Rovers, Kieran McKenna's men will now have to traverse the tricky step-up and hope they can tough it with the top dogs, unlike a leaky Sheffield United.
The powers that be at Portman Road have, no doubt, already drafted up an extensive list of players that could soon join the ranks in Suffolk to help make the jump up to the top-flight less of a daunting proposition, with this £10m-rated midfielder already in their sights according to reports.
Ipswich going after top Championship star
According to a report in the Sun, McKenna's unbelievable Tractor Boys want to strengthen even more with the midfield addition of Ben Sheaf in the off-season.
There could well be an almighty transfer tussle for the Coventry City star-man brewing, however, with Luton Town also interested again after Sheaf allegedly turned down a move to Kenilworth Road in January.
Joao Gomes for Wolves
Formerly on the books at Arsenal as a youngster, it will be intriguing to see who the 26-year-old picks as his next club after missing out on promotion glory with Mark Robins' men this campaign with a London reunion potentially on the cards as Fulham have also thrown their hat into the ring for Sheaf's services.
Ipswich will hope they can gain an upper hand in this battle by convincing the 26-year-old that he will get adequate game-time making the switch to Portman Road, with Sam Morsy potentially sacrificed for the fresher midfielder to shine in the Premier League.
Morsy has been a key cog for McKenna in the centre of the park this blistering Championship season, but with his 33rd birthday coming this September, it could be deemed the correct time to bolster the midfield ranks away from the Egypt international especially if Sheaf is available.
How Sheaf compares to Morsy
Controlling games centrally this season for the FA Cup semi-finalists, Sheaf – who is “a ready-made Premier League player” in the words of Ryan Dilks from the Second Tier Podcast – certainly warrants being given a crack at the very top of the English football pyramid.
In what could be his final ever display for the Sky Blues, Sheaf dictated proceedings at the CBS Arena versus Queens Park Rangers – even if Robins' men did lose 2-1 – with a staggering 114 touches amassed.
Managing to register three key passes as well in the slick display, with a mean streak evident in his game too by winning nine duels and four tackles, this well-rounded approach has even been boldly compared to that of Declan Rice's with football analyst Raj Chohan describing the former Gunner's game as being "Rice-esque."
This is high praise indeed, with this level of adoration worrying Morsy back at Ipswich in the present who will fear his solid spot in McKenna's XI will be taken up by Sheaf soon.
Sheaf does also better Morsy when you compare their numbers over the last year per 90 minutes, according to FBRef, with the heavily praised Coventry midfielder trumping his Tractor Boys counterpart in terms of progressive passes, shot-creating actions, tackles and much more.

As can be seen by glancing at the table above, Sheaf blows the Ipswich midfielder out of the water over the last year in many key areas and should be viewed as a fantastic heir for the ageing ex-Wigan Athletic man.
The 32-year-old could well now view this promotion up to the Premier League with Ipswich as captain as the best possible bang to go out on, knowing that Sheaf could now very much take his spot.

The Tractor Boys secured a magical promotion to the Premier League just a year after escaping League One.
Celtic could dip into the market to improve their playing squad for the 2024/25 campaign when the upcoming summer transfer window opens for business.
The Hoops recently secured their third straight Scottish Premiership title, which they lifted at Parkhead last weekend, and have the chance to seal a domestic double this weekend.
They travel away from Paradise to take on their local rivals Rangers at Hampden Park in the SFA Cup final, which means that Brendan Rodgers could end the term with two trophies under his belt.
The Northern Irish head coach may hope for a stronger second season back in Glasgow, particularly when it comes to competing on the European front.
Celtic finished bottom of their Champions League group and ended the campaign with just one win in Europe, as they failed to finish third and filter down into the Europa League.
They were also knocked out of the League Cup by Kilmarnock in August, which allowed Rangers to go on and win the competition, and they may aim for more success in those areas next term.
Signing a new left-back appears set to be on the agenda for the Hoops this summer and they could finally cash in on Alexandro Bernabei by swooping to sign a Scottish defender.
Celtic's potential interest in Scottish dynamo
Football Scotland recently claimed that Celtic and Rangers may both be interested in a deal to sign Sassuolo left-back Josh Doig this summer, should he become available.
The article named both clubs as teams who could be in the market for a new number three and that the Scottish full-back could be an ideal target for them, as his team has just been relegated to Serie B.
Doig completed a £5m move to Sassuolo from Hellas Verona, amid interest from the Gers, but Football Scotland suggest that the 22-year-old could want to find an immediate exit from the Italian side rather than playing second division football next season.
Josh Doig in action for Hellas Verona.
Back in February, journalist Dean Jones claimed that a left-back would be a "top target" for the Scottish giants in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Greg Taylor is currently the club's only natural left-back option in the squad, as Bernabei was sent out on loan to Brazilian side
Internacional until the end of 2024.
The Argentine defender, who is under contract until 2027, is set to return to Celtic in January 2025 but Rodgers could permanently bin the Hoops flop by signing Doig to take his place in the squad moving forward, leaving no room for him to return next year.
Why Celtic should cash in on Alexandro Bernabei
Since his £3.75m move to Parkhead from Lanus in the summer of 2022, Bernabei has failed to earn himself a regular spot in the team in Glasgow.
In the 2022/23 campaign under Ange Postecoglou, who brought him to the club, the left-back made 15 appearances and nine starts in the Scottish Premiership.
In those 15 matches, the 23-year-old flop did not do enough to convince the Australian head coach that he should have been ahead of Taylor in the pecking order.

As you can see in the table above, Celtic struggled to keep clean sheets with him in the team and his defensive statistics provide an insight into why that may have been the case.
Opposition players dribbled past him 14 times in nine starts in the Scottish top-flight, whilst he was dominated in duels on the deck and in the air.
These statistics suggest that attackers found it far too easy to get joy against him, in dribbles and in physical contests, and that may be why the Hoops defence only kept one shutout in his games.
Celtic left-back Alexandro Bernabei.
Bernabei then lost 53% of his duels and helped the team to keep one clean sheet in eight league outings during the first half of this season before Rodgers decided to send him out on loan to Brazil for the rest of the calendar year.
Since his move to Internacional on loan, the left-footed dud has made one appearance and been an unused substitute in a further six games in all competitions, which does not suggest that he is currently looking likely to return to Glasgow to turn his fortunes around.
Why Celtic should swoop for Josh Doig
Firstly, Celtic should swoop to sign Doig to ensure that they have two left-footed left-back options who can compete with each other and share game time across all domestic and European competitions, rather than being forced to use right-footed players who are limited on the left flank.
This would then improve the competition for places and possibly push Taylor on to improve his own displays, as he would have a player directly competing for his position to drive his motivation up.
It would also allow Rodgers to sanction a permanent exit for Bernabei, whether that is in the summer and in the middle of his loan with Internacional, or when the defender returns to Parkhead in January at the start of next year, as Doig would take up the second left-back spot at the club.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old star's performances for Hibs in his last Premiership season were far more impressive than Bernabei's showings for Celtic.
The 6 foot 2 ace, who teammate Lewis Stevenson claimed "looks like Ronaldo" with his incredible physique, has the strength and defensive quality to offer far more to the Hoops out of possession.
Doig was also only dribbled past 0.6 times per game across 27 matches in the Serie A for Hellas Verona and Sassuolo combined this season, and ranked within the top 9% of his positional peers for blocks (1.76) per 90.
Celtic hit gold with star who's worth more than Tierney & Edouard combined
The Hoops hit the jackpot with the impressive star who is now being linked with an exit.
ByDan Emery May 21, 2024
The young whiz appears to be far better at the defensive side of the game than Bernabei, who let Celtic down badly on that front, and that is why the Hoops should swoop for the homegrown starlet to bolster their squad and permanently bin the Argentine flop this summer.

Second round of Covid-19 tests all come back negative

West Indies provided a double boost to all those looking forward to a return to something approaching normality as their preparations for the Test series against England moved up a level. As well as offering a glimpse of the first organised cricket of the English season – you would have struggled to find many guessing the first game of the summer would feature two West Indies XIs – there was also good news off the pitch. ESPNcricinfo understands that every member of the touring squad tested negative for the Covid-19 virus – the second such test of the tour – increasing confidence that the series will start, as planned, on July 8.While this three-day match will not be recorded as a first-class encounter – the tourists named all 25 players across the two sides and wore coloured training kits, shorts and hoodies rather than whites – the fact that it represented the first professional cricket since the Pakistan Super League was suspended in mid-March rendered it a notable occasion.West Indies will be quietly satisfied with it, too. There were runs for key batsmen, Kraigg Brathwaite (who made 84 off 162 balls) and Shai Hope (83 off 127), while three of the fast bowlers looked in decent shape.Alzarri Joseph, who wrapped up the tail, was the top wicket-taker with 4 for 60, but Shannon Gabriel, who remains officially a reserve for the tour but looks all but certain to be added to the main squad, was equally impressive in claiming 3 for 32. Kemar Roach also started to find his rhythm after a slow start and claimed the wicket of Brathwaite as the batting side lost their last five wickets for the addition of just two runs.ALSO READ: Gabriel set to be added to Windies Test squadThe only cloud on the horizon was the lack of bowling from Jason Holder. While Phil Simmons, West Indies’ head coach, suggested the previous day that Holder had recovered from a minor ankle injury, there one or two looking at the scorecard with a furrowed brow. West Indies do have another match – a four-day, first-class game – ahead of the Test, however, providing Holder ample opportunity to prove his fitness. The Holder XI enjoyed the better of the opening session. John Campbell, who top-edged a pull to mid-wicket, went for a 16-ball duck, before Shamarh Brooks edged one to the keeper. But Brathwaite and Hope are made of stern stuff. Despite taking 23-balls to get off the mark, Hope made 39 off his next 45 and reached his half-century from 76 deliveries with seven fours. Brathwaite, meanwhile, defended and drove well and reached his half-century from 166 deliveries. In all, they added 103 for the third wicket.Shannon Gabriel celebrates the wicket of Shamarh Brooks•Gareth Copley/Getty Images
They were finally parted by Roach, quietly effective throughout, as he took out Brathwaite’s off stump before tea. From 176 for 3 at the start of the last session, the batting side were rounded up efficiently in the evening.Hope was the key wicket, sixth man down nicking Joseph behind. That was the start of a decisive spell for the seamer, who had Raymon Reifer and Anderson Philip caught in the slips and finished off the day by skittling Chemar Holder first ball. Off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall and left-arm seamer Preston McSween each contributed a wicket as the Brathwaite XI were bowled out on the brink of stumps for 275.”The intensity was there from ball one,” Brathwaite told PA afterwards. “Everyone was playing with a purpose. Those guys we faced are quality, so it was very good practice for batters and bowlers. It was intense, it felt like we were in a battle all day. When you play a game like this you want to come out on top.”Shannon looks fit to me and I believe he is ready for the Test series.”

Virat Kohli travels alone on a chartered flight to Dubai after completing testing protocols in Mumbai

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Indian contingent reached Dubai on Friday•RCB
“It’s steaming outside,” Dale Steyn remarked after reaching Dubai at 3am on Saturday along with AB de Villiers and Chris Morris to link up with their Royal Challengers Bangalore colleagues. The venue is going to be just one aspect of the IPL experience that will be different this year, what with Covid-19-related protocols and procedures the teams must adhere to, not to mention the vacant stands. Morris confessed to being “a little bit nervous” as they checked into the team hotel where the Indian contingent of players and support staffers had settled in a day before.Virat Kohli, however, didn’t travel with the rest of the Indian players, a Royal Challengers spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo: “Yes, Virat joined the team yesterday. He followed quarantine and testing according to RCB SOP in Mumbai and took a chartered flight directly from Mumbai to Dubai.”Safety of the players and other members of the travelling party is uppermost on the agenda for all the teams, and Royal Challengers are no different. Though they need only 55 rooms, they have booked one entire wing of a luxury hotel, adding up to 150 rooms, and, in Dubai, all the visitors will serve a mandatory six-day isolation and then be tested (for Covid-19) thrice before being allowed to enter the bio-bubble. Their training sessions begin on August 29. “It’s been quite a while since we played the game that we love, so yeah, very tough, very excited to get going, but a little bit nervous too, to be honest,” Morris told the franchise’s media team, while Steyn was more focused on the weather, wondering “how it’s going to be in a couple of weeks” when the action begins.”The travelling was a bit different to normal, but we made it here. I am looking forward to my Covid tests,” de Villiers said. “Got a feel for what we are in for this year, and then I am looking forward to get to know everyone, all the new players, there’s a whole new feel in the side, so very excited.” With the South Africans reaching Dubai, the wait is on for the rest of the overseas players. Australians Aaron Finch, Kane Richardson and Josh Philippe, who are all headed for England for their white-ball exchanges, will reach around the time of the start of the tournament on September 19. Apart from them, the squad includes England’s Moeen Ali and Sri Lanka’s Isuru Udana, and Mike Hesson and Simon Katich from among the support staffers, all of whom, franchise chairman Sanjeev Churiwala said in a press interaction last week, are expected to arrive in the next few days.Along with booking the entire wing of the hotel, “gym facilities, restaurants will be permanently 100% secured for the exclusive use of the team; all hotel staff and service members will also be tested and staying in-house,” he said. One staff member will be positioned outside the bubble for this period to help the team “coordinate with the outside world”.As far as players, and others, taking their families along to the UAE, Churiwala said that the decision had been left to the individuals.”Most of the players this time are not travelling with their families,” he said. “A few of them have decided, it’s a personal choice that they have optioned for, and if at all their families travel with them – in our current assessment it’s a very, very small group – everyone will go through the same bio-bubble procedures and protocols as laid down by BCCI. Without any exception.”
