I needed to prove Ravi Bopara wrong to make him believe, says Simon Harmer

Harmer took over the T20 captaincy this season with a clear plan of what needed to change and how he wanted Essex to approach the Blast

Essex captain Simon Harmer argued that his decision to drop Ravi Bopara for two group games after an argument regarding his batting position was vindicated by his performances from No. 6 during his side’s improbable surge to the Vitality Blast T20 trophy.Bopara was left out of games against Hampshire and Gloucestershire after what he called some “very tough conversations” with his captain, and admitted before the quarter-final against Lancashire that he was “still not happy down there”, but produced three consecutive man-of-the-match efforts to take Essex to Finals Day, and made 36 not out off 22 balls to help seal victory in the final.”That was one of the decisions that needed to be made,” said Harmer after Essex’s triumph.”In my opinion, Ravi is one of, if not the best, finisher of T20 innings, I felt that in order to for us to win games, we needed him to come in and win [them] for us. [It’s] pointless him walking in at three and getting a good ball and he’s sitting back in the hut.”Sometimes you need to prove people wrong in order to make them believe and I think that was the case with him. He came back after time away from the team.”He bought in 100 percent and reaped the rewards. He’s an incredibly talented cricketer, the way he thinks about cricket and the way he bats, the way he bowls, the execution of his skill.”Bopara signaled in the build-up to Finals Day that he may look to give up red-ball cricket next year and aim to prolong his career on the global T20 circuit, and Harmer suggested that he is most valuable coming in with five or six overs to spare.”He’s an unbelievable player,” he said, “so I can understand his frustration. But hopefully even if it’s not now, five years down the line he can sit back and realise that he is actually best suited to five or six.”Simon Harmer celebrates victory with Ravi Bopara•Getty Images

Worcestershire captain Moeen Ali agreed that Bopara had been “outstanding”.”In my opinion, he won them the game,” Moeen said. “His experience showed. I’m just disappointed with the result.”Harmer took over the T20 captaincy from Ryan ten Doeschate this season, and had never previously captained a side for a full season in the format, but said that he had come in with a clear plan of what needed to change and how he wanted Essex to approach the Blast.”There were some difficult decisions that needed to be made,” he said. “A couple of players got dropped, senior players – not popular opinion in order to drop them – but [it was] what I felt was best for the team in order to get 11 guys on the park who were all pulling in the same direction.”There were changes, in my opinion, that needed to happen in order for us to move forward as a T20 team. But the South African mindset and the competitive environment that I grew up in – to come over here, you need to understand how things work.”If you look at some of the South African coaches, or sometimes the players that have come over have clashed heads with English players – I think there’s a certain narrative in terms of how things work and how to get people to buy in.”For me to come in and just throw out demands and orders and this is how we’re going to play – I was very conscious of that at the beginning – of how I wanted to go about it, of how I needed to get the guys to buy in… that was probably my toughest challenge, but after that things kind of went our way.”Harmer made his own match-winning contributions in the knockout stages, returning the best-ever combined figures on Finals Day of 7 for 35 across the two fixtures before a game-changing cameo of 18 off 7 balls, and argued that his side’s belief was what got them over the line.”We have all the tools,” he said. “We have all the players. We have what you cannot buy, which is the camaraderie in the dressing room. There’s a lot of love in our dressing room for the guy next to you.”In my opinion, you cannot buy that. You can bring in players, you can do what you want, but you can’t buy a bond between people. So that’s why I was quite vocal tonight in terms of how I want people – especially at Essex County Cricket Club – to change the mentality of a small cricket club because we don’t have the money.”It’s always excuses. In my opinion, those need to go. We have the tools to be very competitive over the next five years in all three formats, but we need to start believing.”As it works in cricket, when you need to chase down 300 in a 50-over game, people only start to believe when somebody scores a hundred or somebody takes a five-for.”Essex have the chance to secure an unprecedented T20/Championship double this week, as they travel to Taunton on Monday for a winner-takes-all four-day game, and Harmer said they could take the Blast win into that match.”Now, with us winning this T20 trophy, I think the belief is there and the players now understand that actually we are good enough,” he said. “All the noise in the background is just noise. Hopefully moving forward, we can be competitive and win more trophies.”

Farke could elevate Gray even further by unleashing this Leeds star

The emergence of Archie Gray as a regular starter for Leeds United has been pleasing to see as the 17-year-old has nailed down a place in Daniel Farke's XI, with 31 league starts.

With zero first-team appearances prior to the current campaign, it was a bold move by the head coach to bring the youngster in to be a prominent senior performer.

It is one that has paid off for the Whites on the pitch as the England youth international has been an excellent operator throughout the season so far.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke watches a Championship game.

However, the bulk of his appearances have come at right-back – away from his natural position in central midfield – and Farke could now elevate Gray further by unleashing Connor Roberts in defence to free up the teenage gem to play in the middle of the park.

Connor Roberts' impressive attacking quality

The full-back was signed on loan from Premier League side Burnley on deadline day and has already offered a glimpse of the attacking quality he can provide from a right-back position.

He has produced one goal and one assist in five substitute appearances for Leeds in the Championship so far, with his assist coming in the form of an excellent cross along the six-yard box for Patrick Bamford against Plymouth on Saturday.

Last season, the 28-year-old dynamo racked up four goals and six assists in 39 starts for Burnley as they won the Championship title under Vincent Kompany.

Burnley right-back Connor Roberts.

This means that the Welsh defender, who The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell once claimed has "boundless energy", has been directly involved in 12 goals (five goals and seven assists) in 39 starts in the second tier since the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

He is an experienced operator at that level and could be a reliable option for Farke to call upon at right-back, which would then free up Gray to step into midfield, where his performances could improve.

The stats that show Gray could shine more in midfield

The 17-year-old dynamo was recently provided an opportunity to shine in the middle of the park against Chelsea in the FA Cup last week and won the Player of the Match, despite the Blues winning 3-2.

Gray came through the U21s as a central or attacking midfielder before being utilised at right-back by Farke, and his quality in his favoured role was on show at Stamford Bridge.

As you can see in the table above, the academy graduate thrived in midfield against the Premier League side as he outperformed his average output at right-back in the Championship in a number of key metrics, in and out of possession.

Whilst it was a small sample size, given that it was one game, it does provide a glimpse of what he could do with regular minutes in midfield in the league.

Gray could offer more on the ball, as a passer and a dribbler, and compete to win more duels to regain possession for his side out of possession, than he does at right-back.

Therefore, Farke could elevate the youngster's performances and make him even better by unleashing Roberts at right-back to bring the teenage starlet into midfield.

Better contracts, no discrimination, open transfers: Bangladesh players' demands

A look at some of the most critical demands made by Bangladesh’s male players ahead of their strike that began on Monday

Mohammad Isam21-Oct-2019

Shakib Al Hasan asks for a review•Raton Gomes

At the heart of the Bangladesh players’ discontent that led to the boycott, is their financial situation: Six out of the eleven demands made by the players are for better pay in some form or level of cricket. The BCB, the players feel, has squeezed their income through salary caps, drafts, and other restrictive practices. There are three major sources of income for the professional Bangladeshi cricketer – the Dhaka Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League and the National Cricket League. The fourth source, the BCB’s central contract for the national team, is the most lucrative, but it is only for a handful. Here are the key financial demands made by the players, and their rationale for those demands:Open market transfer in DPLThe DPL is the highest level of the four-tiered Dhaka league structure. Originating in the early 1960s, it provides opportunities to the maximum number of players and is considered the country’s top domestic competition. It had always operated in an open market system for the players’ inter-club transfer, meaning a player was free to choose which club they wanted to play for and to negotiate their pay for the season.Since Nazmul Hassan became BCB president seven years ago, though, apart from one season, the BCB has used a draft system in which clubs have chosen their players, with a salary cap for each category. For the 2018-19 season’s Dhaka Premier League, the board had set a draft with different categories that paid cricketers between BDT 3.5 to 35 lakh (approx. USD 2,700 to 27,000). Seven years ago, the market was – at a conservative estimate – between BDT 5 to 60 lakh (approx. USD 5,900 to 70,000).Hassan’s board agreed with the clubs’ complaints that players were demanding too much money, even though the board already subsidises the clubs’ operations. Most of the BCB’s members and directors are from these Dhaka clubs, which hold a huge say in the board’s matters.Return of the franchised BPL The BPL, which began in 2012, has had its share of difficulties with payment but it was a godsend for domestic players at a time when the DPL clubs were already applying the squeeze through BCB. Even though salaries were delayed in the first couple of seasons, there was a measure of regularity since 2015.The problem here is the difference in salaries between Bangladeshi and foreign players. Most overseas players get a much higher valuation in the draft, even though local cricketers like Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Mashrafe Mortaza have been the BPL’s top performers.

In the 2019 BPL, Mushfiqur earned between USD 47,000 to 88,000 after being put in the A+ category. The same category for the overseas players – which included Shahid Afridi, Imran Tahir and Evin Lewis – was for USD 200,000. The rest of the categories, too, see huge differences – up to five times – between the domestic and foreign players. The demand, read out by Mushfiqur, was for domestic players’ payment to be closer to that of overseas players. Also for every player to be able to decide which category he wants to be in, like other franchise-based T20 leagues.First-class squeezeOne of AHM Mustafa Kamal’s last contributions as BCB president was to fix a monthly stipend for 105 first-class cricketers. The salary was paid in three categories, in which players got between BDT 15,000 to 25,000 per month. This salary remains the same even today, while they have reduced the number of players from 105 to 70.Match fees are a bargain too, as they get BDT 35,000 (approx. USD 413) per match, and the daily (BDT 1,500 = USD 17) plus travel allowance (BDT 2,500 = USD 29) is not enough.Shakib said on Monday that the match fees should be at least BDT 100,000 (approx. USD 1,180), while cricketers must be given more money for food and assurance of an airline ticket rather than find bus and train routes to reach first-class venues.More players, better pay in central contractsThe sixth point, read out by Enamul Haque jnr, was to increase the number of centrally contracted players to 30, and for the retainers to be hiked. Currently, the best-paid player in Bangladesh, in the A+ category, earns USD 52,500 per year after tax. It has been the same since 2017 when the salary was increased for the last time. The amount, as reported two years ago, remains one of the lowest player central contract in world cricket. Bangladeshi cricketers are paid less than that of Zimbabwe’s and Ireland’s, leave alone Sri Lanka, West Indies or other Full Members.Interestingly, the players didn’t demand a percentage of the BCB’s revenue, sponsorship, broadcasting or the amount provided by the ICC each year, as happens in some other countries.

Newcastle "in the front row" for midfielder who’s "everywhere" on the pitch

Newcastle United's poor season could see mass changes in the summer, and there are already plenty of plans on the incomings front.

Newcastle's disappointing summer window

After an impressive run to the top four last season, it has been a campaign to forget for Eddie Howe's side in the Premier League this time around, due in no small part to their business in the transfer market last year.

Finishing bottom of their Champions League group despite some impressive performances, they lost Sandro Tonali to a gambling ban early in the campaign, while Harvey Barnes has missed a huge chunk of time with injury and Lewis Hall has been unable to cement a regular place in the team.

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.

With ten games left to play, they sit 10th and could drop another place should Chelsea win their game in hand on the Magpies. A strong end to the season could see them retain some form of European football for next season, but they certainly won't be making a Champions League return.

They do still harbour hopes of a first trophy under Howe, but face a tough FA Cup quarter final clash with Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, with a place at Wembley at stake. Despite the disappointing campaign, Howe's position remains safe and attention has already turned to the summer transfer window despite concerns over financial fair play.

Transfer planning leads PIF to Serie A midfielder

There could be plenty of change on Tyneside this summer, with Joelinton set to be out of contract and yet to pen fresh terms, while speculation continues to swirl around centre-piece Bruno Guimaraes after it emerged he had a £100m release clause in his contract, with Manchester City rumoured to be interested.

To that end, it is looking likely that further reinforcement in the middle of the pitch will be required, and Sport Witness report that the Magpies have identified Atalanta midfielder Ederson as the man to add to their ranks.

Not just Mourinho: Another serial winner open to usurping Howe at Newcastle

Would he be an upgrade on the current Magpies manager?

ByHenry Jackson Mar 15, 2024

The Brazilian has been a shining light alongside Teun Koopmeiners in the heart of Atalanta's midfield, starting 25 times in Serie A this season and grabbing five goals in the process. Juventus are thought to be tracking him, but reports suggest that it is Newcastle and Premier League rivals Tottenham that are in the lead thanks to their financial muscle.

The two clubs "are now seen as being ‘in the front row in the race’ to acquire Ederson this summer". That is because Atalanta will not sell him for less than 35m euros this summer (£30m), something that they believe Juve will struggle to stump up given the Old Lady are also keen to sign teammate Koopmeiners, valued at 60m euros.

The 24-year-old fits into the high energy mould that Newcastle fans have become accustomed to in recent seasons. Taking to X, U23 scout Antonio Mango told his followers that the then 23-year-old "gets better every time I watch him" and that he is "just everywhere when he plays", similar to Joelinton on Tyneside.

Should Newcastle be forced to part ways with either Joelinton or Guimaraes, they could well sign another Brazilian to fill that role, if they can fight off Tottenham's interest.

£15,000-a-week Leeds ace facing late fitness test before Hull City clash

Leeds United are sweating on the fitness of yet another possible absentee with as many as four of Daniel Farke's squad already confirmed out for the Easter Monday clash with Hull City.

Leeds team news vs Hull City

The Whites surrendered their short-lived lead at the top of the Championship on Good Friday, briefly moving top on goal difference after Leicester's shock defeat only to fall behind Ipswich despite a battling draw at Watford.

Crysencio Summerville was once again the star of the show, scoring a stunning goal to level things after Vakoun Bayo had opened the scoring for the hosts, but it took a classic poacher's goal from late substitute Mateo Joseph to escape Vicarage Road with a point.

And Farke may well have to utitlise the depth of his squad again on Monday, as he will definitely be without Wilfried Gnonto, Stuart Dallas, Connor Roberts and Pascal Struijk, as per the latest team news from The Yorkshire Evening Post.

Wilfried Gnonto

It looks as though the manager will have to juggle things around in midfield a bit – or risk burning out the same group who started the match on Friday – with £15,000-a-week midfielder Ilia Gruev also facing a race against time to make the squad.

Ilia Gruev injury update

The latest news on Gruev's injury is that he's a "major doubt" for Monday's action after picking up a knock on international duty with Bulgaria.

The 23 year-old, who has started 14 Championship matches this season and come off the bench nine times in the competition, has become a bit of an unsung hero within the squad, completing 92.6% of his passes in the league this season, leading Adrian Clarke to say he's player "no one really talks about ".

"He is class, he really is a smooth operator in the heart of the engine room," Clarke said earlier this season. "Gets about the pitch, recovers possession kind of effortlessly but he does with the ball. He just moves it early and quickly but with real quality and rarely gives the ball away. He can drop a pass over the top of a defender all day long for those wide players."

Leeds midfielder Ilia Gruev.

It looks like Leeds will have to make do without those abilities against Hull unless he passes a late fitness test, after Farke revealed in the aftermath of the draw at Watford: "The only player who has perhaps a chance is Ilia Gruev. We have to wait how the swelling will develop and perhaps there is some positive news with him."

The manager will be desperate to get Roberts, Gnonto and the Bulgaria international back for the run-in, with Dallas and Struijk ruled out for the rest of the season.
