Rahul Dravid's conflict-of-interest resolution expected next week

As far as the BCCI is concerned, there is no conflict of interest at all, says CoA chairman Vinod Rai

The controversy around Rahul Dravid’s possible conflict-of-interest situation could be resolved by next week, with the BCCI’s ombudsman saying today that he expects to decide on the issue by then. The BCCI, meanwhile, has restated its stand that Dravid is in the clear, with Vinod Rai, the chairman of its Committee of Administrators (CoA), saying it had no problem with his position.Justice (retd) DK Jain, the BCCI’s ombudsman-cum-ethics officer who sent Dravid a notice on Wednesday based on an external complaint, said he would wait for Dravid’s reply before adjudicating on the matter.Dravid is India’s Under-19 and ‘A’ team coach, a vice-president with India Cements, owners of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, and, since early July this year, head of cricket operations at the National Cricket Academy. The firming up of the NCA job was delayed because of Dravid’s association with India Cements but the decks were cleared on July 4 [he was originally expected to start on July 1], when it was confirmed that Dravid had taken a ‘leave of absence’ from India Cements while with the NCA, the duration of which hasn’t been announced yet.ESPNcricinfo understands that when the matter had come up for discussion at the time of Dravid’s NCA appointment, due diligence based on the submissions – even about conflict of interest – from Dravid was done by the BCCI’s legal team, among others, before a decision was taken, as is the norm. That might have been that but it emerged on August 7 that Jain had sent a notice to Dravid for alleged conflict of interest following a complaint from Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association life member Sanjeev Gupta. A subsequent news report then quoted Jain as saying that the leave of absence from India Cements was not enough to resolve the conflict issue.”I am not in a position to say whether the leave of absence is good enough or not. I don’t know who has written what, but I received a complaint and I have acted on it,” Jain told ESPNcricinfo. “I have sent Mr Dravid a notice, and now I will take the next step once I hear from him.”I am aware that he has been cleared to join the NCA, but that is all I can say. I am going to adjudicate on the matter only after I receive the no-conflict response from Mr Dravid,” Jain said, adding that he expected a response “by next week”.From the CoA’s point of view, nothing has changed on the Dravid front since he was cleared to take charge at the NCA, with a brief to convert the academy into a high-performance centre.”Nothing has changed. As we had said at the time [of the NCA appointment], Dravid is not an India Cements employee at this stage. As far as the BCCI is concerned, there is no conflict of interest at all,” Rai told ESPNcricinfo. “The gentleman from Madhya Pradesh [Gupta] is misinformed. The BCCI doesn’t have a problem with this [Dravid’s position].”I have heard that a notice has been sent to Mr Dravid, and he will respond, but as far as we are concerned, there is no conflict.”Dravid isn’t the first big-name cricketer to be questioned for alleged conflict of interest. Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman were both members of the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee earlier, while also being involved in different capacities with IPL franchises Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively. Separately, there was a complaint against former captain Sourav Ganguly, the third member of that CAC panel, who is president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, mentor of Delhi Capitals in the IPL, while also being a TV commentator. As far as the BCCI is concerned, there is no conflict of interest at all – Vinod Rai•Getty Images

Laxman and Ganguly were found to be in conflict in June. However, Jain ruled there was no issue of conflict against Tendulkar, after the latter submitted that he had decided not to be part of any BCCI committee, and had informed the board about it. As a result, the committee was made defunct before being reconstituted with Kapil Dev, Shanta Rangaswamy and Anshuman Gaekwad.Conflict questions subsequently cropped up against the Kapil-Rangaswamy-Gaekwad panel too, because Kapil is also part of the steering committee on the newly formed Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA) where he is also one of directors. Incidentally, the ICA is funded by the BCCI. Kapil also works as an expert for Indian television channels. As for Gaekwad, it is alleged that in addition to working as a pundit on television channels, he is also part of the BCCI’s Member Affiliation Committee, a sub-committee which grants membership to state associations. Gaekwad, too, is part of the ICA’s steering group, as is Rangaswamy, who is also an ICA director. The three of them, however, have been cleared and tasked with picking the next head coach of the senior Indian men’s team. The decision is expected by mid-August.As such, Rule 38 (4) of the BCCI constitution prevents individuals from holding more than one of 16 posts, which are listed therein. These are: Player (current), selector/member of cricket committee, team official, commentator, match official, administrator/office bearer, electoral officer, ombudsman & ethics officer, auditor, any person who is governance, management or employee of a franchisee, member of a standing committee, CEO & managers, office Bearer of a Member (state association), service provider (legal, financial etc.), contractual entity (broadcast, security, contractor etc.) and owner of cricket academy. As part of Dravid’s role at NCA, he will help create coaching and development programmes for both the men’s A and the age-group teams, as well as for women’s cricket. Dravid is also expected to create a programme for the development of physiotherapists and strength and conditioning coaches, keeping in mind the focus on fitness in modern cricket. The BCCI confirmed in a statement on July 8 that Dravid’s responsibilities would encompass men’s, women’s and age-group cricket. “Mr Dravid will also work closely with the national men’s and women’s head coaches and cricket coaches for India developmental teams – including India A, India Under-19, and India Under-23 teams – in the identification of key training and development objectives,” the statement said. “He will also be responsible for monitoring progress against these objectives for the developmental teams and provide necessary inputs on the same to the senior men’s and women’s head coaches.

Latest Wolves transfer news: £60m Neto claim, exciting replacement eyed

Football FanCast brings you the latest Wolverhampton Wanderers transfer round-up.

In typical Wolves fashion, the club left any transfer dealings until the last minute in the January transfer window, which meant they failed on their main aim to get a striker in before the deadline. However, things weren't made easy though, as FFP concerns heavily weighed on the shoulder of Gary O'Neil with Premier League giving Nottingham Forest and Everton a slap on the wrist.

Despite the lack of signings, Wolves have been in superb form under O'Neil of late, and even stand a chance of pushing for an unlikely European place from here on in.

Latest Wolves transfer rumours

Wolves forward Pedro Neto in Premier League action.

According to former Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers, the Midlands club could look to sell Pedro Neto in the summer transfer window for around £60 million.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Wolves are showing an interest in signing Arsenal youngster Amario Cozier-Duberry.

Also, Fotbol Direkt claim that Wolves were ready to launch a late bid for Lucas Bergvall in the winter transfer window, but he had already given his word to Spurs so joined them.

Wolves 2023/24 transfers

This summer just gone was a bit of a nightmare if you're a Wolves fan or Julien Lopetegui, as the threat of FFP and balancing out the books took the limelight.

The Midlands club did manage to sign Matheus Cunha after his loan spell last season, but they had to make plenty of sacrifices, as the likes of Ruben Neves, Matheus Nunes and Nathan Collins all secured exits.

Wolves managed to raise around £144 million in the last two transfer windows, which massively helped in their bid to escape any kind of punishment from the Premier League for FFP rules.

The most notable exits were the likes of Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes, who had both grown to be important players at Molineux.

One other big departure was Conor Coady finally leaving after captaining the side to a number of successful seasons.

Edgbaston Factor offers England the edge as Ashes arrives with indecent haste

Only weeks after the World Cup, the oldest rivalry in cricket has rolled back onto centre stage

The Preview by Andrew Miller31-Jul-2019

The World Test Championship begins with the Ashes battle between England and Australia on August 1•Getty Images

Big picture”Right. Let’s be doing this. Is this mic on?””HELLO BIRMINGHAM!”***Yes, it’s back! After yet another intense bout of Ashes hype and build-up, lasting … ooh… a matter of hours, cricket’s greatest rivalry is revved up and ready to take centre stage once again. The time for mind-games and trash talk is over (did it ever begin? ED) as England and Australia prepare to do battle for the 347th occasion in that eternal struggle, one that has so far spanned 141 years, 71 series, 15 venues and two hemispheres …Okay, I admit it… it still feels a little bit weird, a little bit soon. At least there’s been that fever-dream of an Ireland Test to help English cricket with the transition from World Cup euphoria to under-starters-orders tension, but this Ashes turnaround has been more abrupt than even those curious home-and-away rubbers in 2013-14 (and we all know how that worked out for the side that had been celebrating at the halfway mark…)And yet … with the greatest respect to an Ireland team that serviced England’s World Cup hangover like a 5am knee-drop from a Christmas-morning toddler, the contest in prospect at Edgbaston is the most viscerally real of deals. If it doesn’t yet feel as though the Ashes are upon us once more, then the mere sight of those Baggy Green caps, going into a huddle after the toss has been won and lost tomorrow morning, will provide all the primordial triggers required to snap competitors and onlookers alike into the here and now.Yes, this time it really is time to leave the World Cup behind … Stokes’ heroics, Roy’s shy, Buttler’s grab-and-smash, those cavorting, ecstatic scenes of live-history-in-the-making at that most magnificent and hard-to-impress of venues. England tried to leave it all behind last week, but failed pretty miserably (in spite of Ireland’s humbling final day). But this time, the return to a favoured stomping ground should facilitate that bid for a new beginning. The Edgbaston factor cannot be discounted as England seek a flying start to this campaign, hard though Australia’s captain, Tim Paine, tried to play it down on the eve of the game. With its feral, fancy-dress-clad crowds bearing down on the action from all corners, it is becoming as intimidating to England’s opponents as the Gabba has long been to Australia’s. There will be nerves, unquestionably, but not the fear of the lesser-known, as was the case in two of England’s last three Ashes openers, when Cardiff was handed the honours for 2009 and 2015, and nearly caused the home side to fluff their lines twice. But there is, of course, an added frisson to this contest, and it is one that will not be lost on the sandpaper-armed patrons of Edgbaston’s Hollies Stand. The fall-out from Australia’s ball-tampering saga may be old hat in some quarters – and the abuse from the crowds certainly seemed to be water off a duck’s back to David Warner during the World Cup. But a five-day Test match drills far deeper into a team’s psyche than a 50-over fling – witness the Barmy Army’s persecution of Mitchell Johnson in the 2010-11 series – and as Paine was at pains to mention, the Cape Town scandal exposed more than just the actions of Australia’s errant three. It went straight to the heart of Australia’s win-at-all-costs culture – the same culture that sought to rub England’s noses in it at the end of the 2017-18 Ashes with that four-fingers-and-clenched fist “4-0” podium in Sydney. Under Paine, the squad has gone out of its way to portray a new and more wholesome image, though Ben Stokes, for one, isn’t convinced that that will last for long once the going gets tough in the heat of an Ashes battle. “It’s weird, Aussies trying to be nice to you,” he said. But it is still possible to kill with kindness, to be smiling assassins. And with David Warner and Steve Smith fit and firing after impressive roles in Australia’s run to the World Cup semi-finals, and Usman Khawaja back at No.3 after injury, their top order is unquestionably more settled than England’s, who look set once again to rely on their wealth of middle-order allrounders to offset their perpetual instability.Australia’s bowling attack, too, has an air of menace rarely seen on these shores in the past couple of decades. They will hit the ground running after a bloodbath of a warm-up at the Ageas Bowl last week, in which the team management’s desire to replicate English swinging conditions resulted in 17 wickets on the first day alone. Unlike India this time last year, they have not passed up the importance of acclimatisation at the start of an England Test series. If they can survive the Edgbaston acid test, this series is set up for a classic. Though, in one final hark back to those halcyon days in sky blue earlier this month, that Edgbaston factor has already hit Australia where it hurts this summer, with their eight-wicket drubbing in the World Cup semi-final, a result so emphatic that the scoreboard was still showing Root and Eoin Morgan’s not-out innings while Australia were warming up earlier in the week.Australian teams of yesteryear seldom struggled to get up for the Ashes and the World Cup in quick succession – they won both at a canter in 1999, 2003 and 2007. England, by contrast, have tended to see the attainment of glory as an excuse to let standards slide (see 2005 and 2011 for examples). But if any venue will persuade them to harness the thrill of a new endeavour but savour the glories here and now, a five-day Edgbaston Ashes party could be just the tonic.Form guideEngland WWLLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Australia WWDLWIn the spotlightIt’s all on you, skipper. Joe Root has had a relatively quiet time in his last three England innings – all at Lord’s, and none of them doing much to pull his sides out of a top-order funk. But as the captain of a home Ashes series, and knowing full well that his scalp will be prized more highly than any other in England’s ranks, Root’s bitten the bullet and pushed himself up into that troublesome top three. The logic, on the face of it, seems perverse. A simple 3-4 swap with Joe Denly does little to address concerns about the openers against the moving ball, whereas a promotion for Denly might have allowed Jason Roy a bit more of a chance to bed in at 3 without sacrificing Root’s established strength at 4.His senior team-mates have heard it all already throughout the World Cup, but for Cameron Bancroft – restored to the top of the order after quietly going about his business for Durham in the County Championship – his re-emergence into the glare of the international spotlight promises to be even more intense than that of Smith and Warner. He was, after all, the man caught yellow-handed with sandpaper down his underpants in Cape Town, but added to that is the fall-out from that bizarre Johnny Bairstow head-butting story in the last Ashes, the sort of stitch-up that England’s players (and supporters) are unlikely to forget in a hurry. But more importantly, of course, Bancroft has the enviable honour of setting Australia’s agenda against Anderson and Broad, armed with the new ball. He might have once feared his career was over for good. Now he’s got one hell of a stage for a second coming.Team newsThe top-three whirligig aside, the story of England’s selection is the identity of their seam attack. James Anderson has been passed fit following his calf tear four weeks ago, so slots into the XI ahead of Olly Stone, with Chris Woakes set to play only his second Test at Edgbaston – a venue where he boasts Tim Murtagh-at-Lord’s-esque figures. Moeen Ali, another Birmingham native, will play as the solitary spinner – no room for Lord’s batting hero Jack Leach this time – while England’s middle order welcomes back the power couple, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes. Sam Curran, whose runs against Ireland were also vital in tipping the balance in that crazy contest, reverts to bench-warming once again.England: 1 Jason Roy, 2 Rory Burns, 3 Joe Root (capt), 4 Joe Denly, 5 Jos Buttler, 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 8 Moeen Ali, 9 Chris Woakes, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James AndersonExtraordinary as it may seem to anyone who watched him in awe during the World Cup, Mitchell Starc seems destined to be overlooked as Australia face up to the flip-side of having such a wealth of fast-bowling options – the inevitability that someone is going to be bitterly disappointed. James Pattinson is guaranteed his first Ashes outing since 2013 after hugely impressive displays for Nottinghamshire and in Australia warm-ups, and with Pat Cummins also inked in, the final seam berth will be between Josh Hazlewood and the ageless Peter Siddle, another whose county form for Essex has encouraged the selectors that he will nail an English length from the get-go. In the batting stakes, Bancroft’s 93 not out in that frenzied warm-up at the Ageas Bowl should earn him a shot at post-sandpaper redemption, while Khawaja is back at 3 after recovering from a hamstring strain. Travis Head is the incumbent at No.5, though Mitchell Marsh may yet feature to provide a fourth-seamer option.Australia (possible): 1 David Warner, 2 Cameron Bancroft, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Steve Smith, 5 Travis Head/Mitchell Marsh, 6 Matthew Wade, 7 Tim Paine (capt & wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 James Pattinson, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Peter Siddle/Josh Hazlewood.Pitch and conditionsA belter of a pitch is usually in prospect at Edgbaston, though the heavy rain that forced the players to train indoors on Tuesday may yet be a factor in the final preparation. Either way, it currently looks brown and true – none of the unnerving live grass that proved such a factor at Lord’s. England, it seems, are placing their faith in their special batch of thick-seamed, heavy-lacquered Dukes balls, rather than the surfaces.Edgbaston is sold out for the first three days, with a few hundred tickets still available for day four. The weather forecast is not great, but it should at least be pretty dry (if cool) for the first two days.Stats that matter England have an impressive recent record against Australia at Edgbaston, where they have been unbeaten in all forms of the game since the 2001 Ashes. Their record against all-comers is every bit as good, with 11 wins in a row since a T20I in 2014, and they are unbeaten in Tests at the venue since 2008. This will be the first Ashes series in history to begin in the month of August. Since 2001 England’s home Ashes had regularly begun in July. The fifth Test is scheduled to finish on September 16, the latest yet. Australia have lost each of their last four Ashes campaigns in England, their worst run since the 1890s. The first Test also marks the start of the long-awaited World Test Championship. Teams will collect points over a two-year cycle, ahead of a final in June 2021. There are 120 points up for grabs per series, regardless of length, so 24 per Test in this instance.Quotes”I can’t control how other people are going to react within the ground, and how the crowd go about that. I think the one-dayers gave a small idea of what it probably will be like for them. But we’re not going to get involved in that as a team, we want to play good cricket, and make it a really memorable series.”
Joe Root, England’s captain, expects a lively reception for Australia from the Edgbaston crowd.“If we can be really clear, come out and execute well, it doesn’t matter if we play at Edgbaston or on the moon, we think our best cricket is good enough.”

'I am the new guy, so I ask a lot of questions' – Jasprit Bumrah

India’s spearhead credits a fast bowling group always willing to help each other out for team’s success

Aishwarya Kumar at Sabina Park02-Sep-20191:49

Kohli’s confidence in me gives me self-belief – Bumrah

A back of a length ball darting into the batsman’s chest. A mean bouncer that sends the neck guard of the batsman’s helmet flying. A rapid delivery nearly brushing the outside half of the off stump. The secret behind Bumrah’s swing

Inswingers, outswingers, bouncers – they have all come naturally to Jasprit Bumrah on his way to decimating the West Indies batting-line up. When asked about this uncanny ability of his, the fast bowler pointed to the advantage of bowling with the Duke ball.
“I played a lot of cricket in England, we played a lot of Test matches, we bowled with the Duke ball. There is a lot of movement with the Duke ball, you get a lot of confidence in outswing, inswing, whatever you’re trying. So, that experience helped me out.”
When asked about setting himself targets for every day, Bumrah said he never approached his bowling that way. The team always came first, he said.
“If we win the match I am fine if I don’t get wickets as well. My aim is – how can I contribute towards the team’s success, be it taking wickets, creating pressure, however I can contribute, that is the way I go forward.”

Day three saw Jasprit Bumrah bowl from both ends – and mix it up. He didn’t pick up a wicket, but everything he did looked calculated, pre-planned, well thought out. After day two, during an interview with Virat Kohli, Bumrah had said that there had been a lot of communication between the India bowlers.”Ishant [Sharma] has played a lot more cricket than all of us, [Mohammed] Shami has played a lot of cricket, I am the new guy, so I try and ask questions,” Bumrah said on Sunday. “I ask them, they’ve played here before, so ‘what works in different conditions?’ ‘If the wicket is not doing anything what should we do?’ ‘What different plans are to be there?’ So all these different communication goes on including the captain and the vice-captain, everybody discusses, everybody has their own plans, so all of these things are going on when you play.”Though he has run through the West Indies line-up twice in this series, Bumrah predicted tougher times ahead.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“Now the wicket has gotten a little better. So movement has gotten less than the previous innings. We have to bowl well, create pressure from all ends, so that will help us to be in [a good position],” he said. That India have dominated this game is in no small part due to Bumrah’s hair-raising form. He took 6 for 16 in the first innings, including a hat-trick, which was a testament to his ability to assess conditions quickly.”So in bouncy wickets, you can be greedy and you look to bowl short but you should not do that – you should bowl in good areas, create pressure and try and bowl full, so that was the plan going into the first innings. We were just trying to assess the situation as soon as possible and try and bowl accordingly,” he explained.”First innings, I changed my end because the breeze was going from this end to that end and we wanted to use the inswinger and see how it goes. We tried to do that and it worked. We pitched the ball up.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

At one point during the over in which Bumrah got his hat-trick, the stump mic picked up Kohli reacting to one of his deliveries with, ‘What a bowler, man! What a bowler.’ “The captain gives you a lot of confidence,” Bumrah said. “That gives you a lot of self-belief. When you bowl, you can express yourself, you can try whatever you want to do. That gives you a lot of confidence, not only me, but each and every bowler is being backed by him so much. As a bowling unit we are very happy and then we have the freedom to do what we want.”Looking ahead, he said the Indian bowling unit is in sync and working very well together – something he hopes will help them improve and bring more success as a team.”We have done a lot of hard work and last year we played a lot of away matches, so lot of camaraderie is there, a lot of backing is there, we back each other whenever things are not going well – even if things are going well we discuss what can we do better, so that was the plan going forward. We got a good relationship all of us, we want to get better every year. It’s a good relationship and we are working hard and hopefully these processes will bring more results.”

Scouts sent: Chelsea make first move to sign "sensational" Barcelona star

Chelsea appear to have already made their first move over a potential summer transfer for a new defender this week, according to a new report.

Chelsea transfer rumours

The Blues haven’t had things their own way in the Premier League this season under Mauricio Pochettino, despite Todd Boehly getting the chequebook out last summer. It looks as if he may need to do the same again in 2024, with a marque striker seemingly at the top of the club’s to-do list at the end of the season.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen appears to be the top target, and there have been reports that he has chosen to join Chelsea. The Blues appear to be working on a big seven-year contract for the forward, which could see him collect more than £90m in wages.

However, alongside a new attacker, there could also be a new goalkeeper on the way to London, with Robert Sanchez’s future looking in doubt. A new defender may also be of interest going off a recent update involving Chelsea officials.

Chelsea scout Barcelona star

According to HITC and their reporter Graeme Bailey, Chelsea sent scouts to watch Barcelona defender Jules Kounde during their Champions League clash with Napoli.

He actually came up against Osimhen, who the Blues also watched, with the Nigerian scoring in the 1-1 draw. The report adds that Chelsea think there could be a chance that Kounde is made available for transfer this summer and that those at Stamford Bridge ‘have never turned away from a move’.

Kounde, on £222,000-a-week with the Catalan giants, can play as a centre-back or as a right-back, turning out in the latter of the two in the week, coming up against winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and keeping the Napoli man relatively quiet in the last 16 first leg.

Kounde, who football analyst Marcus Bring dubbed a "sensational" player back in 2021, has made 72 appearances since joining Barcelona in 2022 and is now valued at a career-high €60m by Transfermarkt.

Meanwhile, former teammate and now Aston Villa defender Diego Carlos also praised the player during their time at Sevilla, saying:

“Yes, he has quality and he can play for great European clubs. He is a young player who can still improve over time, he has got great qualities, he is very strong and I am sure he can play for a big club as a great defender. We have good communication on and off the pitch and we have a good relationship.”

Chelsea are well stocked at centre-back at this moment in time, with the likes of Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana, Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva all on the books in London, however, it looks as if Kounde will be a player to watch ahead of the summer.
