Billy Root doubles up to turn the tables on Northamptonshire

Batsman bounces back from being dropped on 0 to post career-best 229 at Wantage Road

Billy Root made the highest score by a Glamorgan batsman against Northamptonshire to put his side in complete command at Wantage Road. Root’s career-best 229 helped his side recover from 120 for 5 to close the second day 452 for 9, leading by 243.Badly dropped by Ricardo Vasconcelos at second slip on 0 – a chance that would have left Glamorgan 21 for 4 – Root took full advantage, hitting 30 fours and a six in his third innings over a hundred in the County Championship and second against Northants this season after his 126 in Cardiff back in April. He played a number of eye-catching cuts and drives, the pick of which was crashed through cover point off Nathan Buck, and ran superbly between the wickets with one exception – a sharp single attempted to Buck at mid-on would have seen Root run out for 90 had Buck thrown down the stumps, but the fielder failed to gather. It allowed Root to go through to a fourth first-class hundred in 121 balls with 16 fours and after tea he extended it to a double-century in 230 deliveries with 26 fours and a scooped six over backward-square off Ben Sanderson. He initially battled Glamorgan away from danger in a stand of 83 with Charlie Hemphrey that took up most of the morning session before adding another 87 for the sixth wicket in the afternoon put Glamorgan in the lead.Dan Douthwaite was the second game partner for Root in making 44. He produced a beautiful high elbow to strike three on-drives for four before hoicking Rob Keogh’s off-spin over midwicket and top-edging a hook at Luke Wood for another boundary as 172 runs were added between lunch and tea.Douthwaite flicked Keogh to short-midwicket but was only the second afternoon wicket to fall after Kieran Carlson fell for 7 to the ninth ball of the session, edging a lifting delivery from Buck to second slip. At 120 for 5, Northants had hopes of getting back in the game, only for Root to take it away from them. The home side made the perfect start to the day with three quick wickets for Sanderson. He made the breakthrough with the 13th delivery of the morning with one that nipped away to feather the edge of Nick Selman, who fell to the first ball he’d received on day two.Sanderson then angled balls back into the right-handed Marnus Labuschagne and David Lloyd, who both shouldered arms and both lost their off stumps within 11 balls of each other. Had Root then been caught, Northants would have been right in the match but the miss proved the worst sliding doors moment imaginable for the hosts.

Man Utd working to sign £40m Jarrad Branthwaite before transfer deadline

Erik ten Hag and Manchester United could part ways with not just one, but a number of centre-backs during the summer transfer window. They knew that veteran Jonny Evans would be coming to the end of his contract, but Raphael Varane could leave as a free agent too after the Red Devils elected not to exercise their option to extend his deal by a further year. Elsewhere, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are both up for sale, should the club receive a sufficient offer.

Manchester United's Raphael Varane.

This of course means we could see multiple additions in that area at Old Trafford, and one potential candidate is Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite. It's previously been reported that Branthwaite is a target for United, and Everton's financial problems could push them towards a sale. The Toffees have already been deducted ten points for breaking Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules, and have been charged with breaches in a separate accounting period too.

Man Utd launch late move for Branthwaite

Now, according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Manchester United want to sign Branthwaite before the January transfer window shuts on Thursday. Real Madrid and Chelsea have been showing an interest, but it's the 20-time Premier League champions who have taken the initiative.

Ten Hag is pushing for a deal that could wind up costing £40m when bonuses are included, but Everton manager Sean Dyche regards the defender as "untouchable" as he battles to keep them up. The plan at Goodison Park is to hold onto Branthwaite until at least the summer, but we'll see how significant the financial pressure proves to be.

"Magnificent" Branthwaite could be a steal

Branthwaite joined Everton from Carlisle in 2020 but it's only this season that he's broken into the team on Merseyside, having previously had loan spells at Blackburn and PSV. He no doubt impressed his parent club with his performances in the Netherlands, where he played 37 games and won the Dutch Cup.

At the international level, meanwhile, he was part of the England under-21 squad that won last summer's European Championships without conceding a single goal, starting a 2-0 group-stage win over Germany.

Branthwaite has started 18 out of 21 games for Everton this season and has shown, in the words of Alan Shearer, that he's "magnificent at the back". As you can see in the table above, he's won 80.6% of the tackles he's attempted, the seventh-best record in the league, and his exceptionally high volumes of clearances and interceptions point to smart positioning and dogged defending of his own penalty area.

Man Utd lead race to sign £60m star who Hojlund will love

Manchester United could seal the perfect signing for Rasmus Hojlund next summer.

ByMatt Dawson Jan 29, 2024

Time is running out in the January window, so it's unclear if United will be able to get this one done, but even if they have to wait until the summer, this could be a top signing. Factor in the potential for a reduced fee in light of what's going at Everton, and you could have yourself a steal.

Clashes in stands at Headingley as Afghanistan-Pakistan turns ugly

There had been melee between the fans outside the stadium before the match began, and it also carried on outside after the eviction

Sidharth Monga at Headingley29-Jun-2019

One of the ugliest cricket matches at an ICC event ended with words of grace from each side, something that could not be said of the fans who threw punches at each other while in the stands, chucked rubbish, bottles and even a rubbish bin and finally invaded the pitch as soon as the match finished. Those outside used steel barriers on the streets as weapons. Fighting among fans – to this degree – is unheard of at modern ICC events. It would appear, though, that the authorities either were unaware of or underestimated the animosity between the two countries and their fans. The action from on-site security and stewards was not swift or decisive enough to prevent clashes from breaking out in the stands or to stop people from entering the field of play at the end of the match. Security lapses were visible even at the start of the match as quite a few fans were seen jumping the boundary walls of the stadium to gain illegal entrance.ALSO READ – Monga: An opportunity to keep the Afghanistan-Pakistan rivalry dignifiedThe pitch invasion finally raised the biggest alarm for the players. Mohammad Nabi was almost tackled accidentally by a security officer as he went after a pitch invader. This raises serious question marks over the security of the players and the fans in the ongoing World Cup.”We are aware of some scuffles among a minority of fans and are currently working with the venue security team and the local police force, West Yorkshire Police, to ensure there are no further incidents,” an ICC spokesperson said after the first incident, which took place an hour into the match. “We do not condone this type of behaviour, and will take appropriate action against any anti-social behaviour that spoils the enjoyment for the majority of fans.”At least two fans were evicted early in the match, but whatever action was taken was evidently not enough as rioting resumed in the dying moments.Geopolitical tensions have been high between Kabul and Islamabad. The two countries are divided by a porous border, the Durand Line, which was drawn up in 1893 between Afghanistan and British India. Refugees, drugs and terror and American influence moved through this border freely for about 40 years before it was closed temporarily in 2017. Cross-border movements are much more difficult now. These tensions manifest themselves in cricket all the more because Afghanistan learnt their cricket in Pakistan but are now beholden to India for the BCCI’s help in giving their national team an adopted home ground and helping them with infrastructure.A pitch invader is tackled by a security official•Getty Images

On the field, though, the match was played in good spirit, and both teams were full of praise for each other. Representatives from both sides who spoke to the press after the game said they were not aware of what went on in the stands. Both parties asked for calm and better behaviour when informed. Pakistan’s Imad Wasim urged the fans to stop fighting because they are all Muslims, and thus brothers. Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib reminded his countrymen they represent their country wherever they go.However, it is unfair to expect them to react accurately when they didn’t know what exactly had happened. What they were fully aware of was the contest they were in. Pakistan came within one mistake of getting beaten and practically bowing out of the tournament, and they knew a lot of it was down to the quality of bowling they faced.”Look, their spinners, they’re world class,” Imad said. “If they score consistently over 250 or 260 on any track, they can cause trouble to any team. So credit goes to Afghanistan. I think last five years they rose up. And look at that, they’re giving a tough time to every team. They gave India a tough time. They gave us a tough time. And there are a lot of teams, you know. So Afghanistan, I think, is a force to reckon with in a couple of years’ time.”Wahab Riaz, who broke the game open with a six in the 49th over, knew they had been stretched to their limits. He said if Afghanistan’s batting can improve they can threaten any team. Naib gave all the credit to Imad’s innings of 49 for closing out the game when intense pressure was on. A few Pakistan fans waited near the Afghanistan team bus to console them and tell them that they played well and were unlucky to lose. Rashid Khan obliged them with selfies.

Newcastle could sign another top striker as PIF prepare for busy summer

After a quiet January transfer window in which they failed to sign any reinforcements or sanction a single departure, Newcastle United could reportedly make up for lost time by once again splashing the cash on an exciting transfer this summer.

Newcastle transfer news

Despite not doing any business in the last month, the rumours didn't stop coming regarding Newcastle. Current stars such as Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles were all linked with a move away to seemingly keep the Magpies within Financial Fair Play guidelines. With none of those players securing an exit, it seems as though Newcastle are confident of avoiding any punishments.

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.

CEO Darren Eales said at the start of January via The Shields Gazette: "We're compliant in the year we're talking about here and our plans are always to be compliant going forward," he said. "That is part of our business plan and part of our model.

"The Everton [points deduction] judgment showed that there were teeth to the PSR regime and I think that's something that's probably focused a lot of minds within the Premier League, that this is something that's real.

"To be clear, right from our takeover, we've understood that that's the regime that we're in, and our business plan and everything we do are premised on the basis that we're compliant. But I think it's fair to say that a lot of people probably didn't expect it to be the level that it was, and that has certainly focused minds."

With that said, reports suggest that those at St James' Park could spend once again this summer. According to Dean Jones via GiveMeSport, Newcastle are poised to seriously consider another top striker in a busy summer for PIF, who could also focus on signing a new goalkeeper and central midfielder. Given the Magpies' struggles this season, signing competition for Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak could be key this summer.

Wilson's injury history makes him an unreliable option

As much as Wilson's stats show just how clinical he can be, with seven goals from seven Premier League games and 7.2 expected goals (xG) to his name, the elephant in the room is his injury history, and as Newcastle look to cement themselves as a top side for years to come, they can't afford to rely on the former Bournemouth man, especially as Isak continues his rise. When considering that, it could certainly be an interesting summer at St James' Park.

Now 31 years old, Wilson's run of injuries is unlikely to improve, potentially forcing Newcastle into a decision. Just who the Magpies target this summer remains to be seen, but it may well be time for Eddie Howe to be ruthless. On course to miss out on a top-four place this season, Newcastle could have a busy summer of improvements ahead.

Leeds could still make a profit on ‘shocking’ Orta signing

Leeds United's transfer policy before a ball was even kicked this campaign has worked a treat, the Whites offloading various players that contributed to the club's relegation down to the Championship on loan deals.

This allowed for space to be freed up for Daniel Farke to start shopping for hungry gems who wanted to be a part of Leeds' success story in getting straight back up to the Premier League, as seen in purchases for the likes of Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu who have shone in the second tier.

Long gone now are the days where the Whites defence looks porous game after game in the top-flight, with one forgotten figure from that terrible Leeds back four that shipped an embarrassing 78 goals now out playing in Germany.

Leeds United's loan defender Joe Rodon.

Remarkably, Leeds could somehow still make a profit on the 26-year-old defender in question who was nothing more than a flop at Elland Road after one disastrous campaign.

The signing of Maximilian Wober

High still on managing to secure their Premier League safety – finishing in 17th spot after a hot-and-cold 2021/22 season – Leeds would break the bank on a number of new recruits with all these purchases turning out over time to be colossal wastes of money.

Victor Orta signed Wober for £11m on a January deal that season which was meant to see the Austrian defender harmoniously reconnect with his ex-Red Bull Salzburg manager in Jesse Marsch, but Wober's short-lived time with Leeds before leaving again would turn out to be sour.

Leeds United defenderMaximilian Wober.

He would initially come in and make an impact – starring in a 2-2 draw Leeds managed against Manchester United that season as an all-action centre-back – but his Whites career would soon unravel as the West Yorkshire side began to stare relegation more and more in the face.

Wober's final ever game in a Leeds shirt potentially is one he won't look back on with fondness, substituted off on the hour mark as the hosts shipped four to Tottenham Hotspur in a dismal 4-1 defeat.

A silver lining from the whole ordeal involving Wober will be the fact Leeds could still make a handsome profit on the Austrian defender if he makes his switch to Borussia Mönchengladbach permanent, with Farke's promotion-chasing Whites more than content now at ditching the 26-year-old dud.

Maximilian Wober's transfer value in 2024

Despite joining Gladbach off the back of a bumpy spell in England, Wober has slotted in seamlessly to the Bundesliga side's plans.

The new Gladbach number 39 has averaged a respectable 7.06 rating on Sofascore this season from 16 appearances, leading to his transfer value rising even with his nightmarish time at Leeds still lingering.

Purchased for £11m just last January by Leeds, the Whites could have the last laugh if and when they offload Wober permanently with his value now at €16.5m (£14m), as per Football Transfers.

For a defender who was once described as "shocking" by football journalist Dougie Critchley, it's been an impressive and swift turnaround of fortunes.

Wober continued to shine for Gladbach in their last Bundesliga encounter this weekend, coming back into the side after being unavailable and fulfilling his defensive duties with flying colours.

Putting in three tackles and successfully blocking two shots, the once leaky Whites defender was a brick wall in comparison for Gladbach in the 0-0 draw with SV Darmstadt 98.

Leeds United defender Max Wober.

Leeds won't be rushing to get Wober back in through the door at Elland Road, and with his transfer value increasing even after a flat time in England, this summer could well see Farke and Co attempt to ship Wober on permanently and focus on the current crop of talent already present in West Yorkshire.
