Alastair Cook has scored an unbeaten 150 in his first innings in England since retiring from Test cricket, playing for Essex in a pre-season game against Cambridge University.It was 34-year-old former England captain Cook’s first outing at home since he received a knighthood in the Queen’s New Year Honours list and his 64th first-class ton.Cook retired last September with a knock of 147 against India at The Oval, after 161 Test appearances and 12,472 runs, both England records.He took to the Cambridge attack with authority, bringing up his fifty before lunch on the opening day of the three-day game with the ninth boundary of his innings, having faced 106 balls. He reached his hundred before tea off 200 deliveries and finished with 150 off 248 balls, including 21 fours.Cook shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 217 with Adam Wheater before Wheater was dismissed for 130. Cook gave Luke Chapman a tough caught-and-bowled chance en route to his century, but otherwise played flawlessly, and both batsmen reached their tons in the same Josh Cantrell over which yielded 19 runs.Essex declared on 387 for 5. They open their 2019 County Championship season at Hampshire on 5 April.

According to talkSPORT, West Ham are keen to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers' captain Max Kilman this month. The report claims that Moyes is a massive admirer of the central defender and first ignited interest in the 26-year-old during the summer window once the club received £105m from Declan Rice's sale.

Nevertheless, the Hammers won't be able to sign Kilman for cheap as the player has recently signed a new contract with Wolves, keeping him at the Midlands club until 2028. Serie A champions Napoli had a £30m offer for Kilman rejected before the 2023/24 campaign commenced and it has been reported that Wolves are holding out for around £40m for his services.
West Ham have been left quite bare at the back this week with Thilo Kehrer and Kurt Zouma absent through illness and injury, while Nayef Aguerd will be missing for a few weeks as the Moroccan is competing in the AFCON this month. Moyes could add depth and quality to his defensive department with the addition of Kilman.

The best ability is availability and this is one of Kilman's greatest traits. The left-footed right centre-back has played every single minute possible for Wolves this season as Gary O'Neil's side find themselves merely three points off the competition's European places.
Availability in defence is one thing that West Ham are struggling with at the moment. An unlikely duo of Konstantinos Mavropanos and Angelo Ogbonna have started the last two matches for the Hammers and managed to keep back-to-back clean sheets. However, the pair have made a combined total of 13 appearances in the Premier League this term.
Furthermore, Ogbonna has been with West Ham for almost nine years and is now 35, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. This means that there could be a place in Moyes' squad very soon but the manager could have the perfect replacement for Ogbonna in the heart of the defence.

Kilman is a clear upgrade on Ogbonna and boasts better stats in and out of possession which could greatly improve West Ham's defensive solidity. Additionally, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher even praised Kilman as a "no-frills" centre-back.
Nevertheless, Mavropanos may have played his way into West Ham's starting lineup permanently. The Greece international has made just five league starts this season, three of which came in the team's last three outings. West Ham haven't conceded in any of these last three matches and Mavropanos even scored a header in a 2-0 win away at Arsenal last Thursday.
With Mavropanos looking undroppable, Kilman could be utilised as his long-term defensive partner as both men are the same age. Given Kilman is left-footed, he could easily slot into the left-sided centre-back position to partner the former Gunners man.
While pricey, Kilman could be the perfect signing for West Ham to bolster their backline this winter ahead of the second half of the campaign, provided Wolves are willing to let their skipper leave.

A persistent drizzle held up play for nearly three hours before the second ODI in Dehradun was abandoned without the completion of an innings. The covers came off twice during the break, only to be back on within minutes as the rain barely allowed for the umpires’ scheduled inspections.Earlier, left-arm spinner George Dockrell, and offspinner Andy McBrine took five wickets between them as Ireland put a timely end to two substantial Afghanistan partnerships and limited them to 250 for 7 in 48.3 overs before the stoppage.Afghanistan had an opening stand of 90, and a third-wicket stand of 87, but lost two quick wickets after both of them to lose steam and be forced into more conservative batting towards the end. On both occasions, it was the combination of Dockrell and McBrine that brought the breakthroughs. As the pressure mounted, allrounder Simi Singh sneaked in 1 for 33 in his eight overs.For the third consecutive game on the tour, Afghanistan had a strong opening start. Not for the first time, it was dominated entirely by Hazratullah Zazai. The left-hander opened the scoring on the day by tonking Tim Murtagh over midwicket and out of the stadium off the second ball of the game after Asghar Afghan had elected to bat. Ireland had McBrine share the new ball with Murtagh, a gamble on his offbreak to upset Zazai’s rhythm. While it worked to some extent – Zazai had several come off the top, bottom, and leading edges against all bowlers – runs were still fairly easy to pick up for the batsman. His sixes – five of them – were exclusively on the leg side and aimed over long-on, the difference just being the distance he got on them.Debutant left-arm spinner, 28-year-old James Cameron-Dow, was given a taste of this off consecutive deliveries in his first over in international cricket. Having faced only pace and offbreaks until the 12th over, Zazai sized up the newcomer, drilling him over long-on to bring up fifty, and following it up with a bigger slog next ball.His adventures only lasted three overs from there. McBrine, brought back into the attack, slowed down a length ball that spun away from off stump and Zazai’s attempted slog sweep came off the top edge. For the first time, it was in touching distance of a fielder and Balbirnie grabbed it running back from first slip.In the next over, another bowling change brought a wicket. Dockrell lobbed one up to Javed Ahmadi, Afghanistan’s other opener on the day, and his first attempt at forcing the attack against spin ended up with him lobbing a simple catch to mid-on. It was emblematic of Ahmadi’s struggle all afternoon; his 53-ball 22 played into Ireland’s hands even during Zazai’s onslaught. When they’d both been dismissed off consecutive overs, Afghanistan were 92 for 2 in the 17th over: a reasonable run-rate given Zazai had got his 67 off just 43 deliveries.The screws could have been turned further, but Balbirnie dropped Rahmat Shah at gully off Boyd Rankin in the 25th over, and Hashmatullah Shahidi’s top-edged sweep was grassed at deep square by Murtagh in the 29th. What should have been McBrine’s second wicket at the time became the starting point of Afghanistan’s acceleration.Shah was by far the more fluid of the two batsmen, promptly on his toes when the seamers dropped it short, and unafraid to use his feet to alter the spinners’ lengths. But after making 54 off 66 balls, he fell playing the wrong line to Dockrell, and made way for Afghan, who proceeded to hit the spinner for two fours – one to wide long-on, and one wide of long-off. With just under 15 overs left when he came in, the Afghanistan captain’s intentions were clear, but couldn’t be matched with more than those two boundaries as he chopped McBrine on next over.Shahidi, who announced himself at the Asia Cup last year with three consecutive fifties, was still around. He completed his fourth fifty in six ODI innings, looking reasonably comfortable against spin, but completely at sea against Rankin’s short of a length test. Having previously been rapped on the thumb trying to fend one, Shahidi ended up slicing a pull out to deep square against the fast bowler. Where he’d struck at at least 85 against spin, he got only 4 off 17 against Rankin. And his wicket – shortly after Nabi’s 20-ball 24 ended with a miscue to long-on – was the centre of a collapse that took Afghanistan from 226 for 4 to 234 for 7. Rashid Khan’s fledgling cameo was cut short as soon as he swatted Murtagh over midwicket, with the clouds that had persisted throughout the day delivering on their unwanted promise.

Michael foi à comissão técnica para propor abrir mão de seu período de recesso, que o elenco principal terá até o dia 15 de março, e jogar as três primeiras rodadas do Carioca, que se inicia já nesta terça para o Flamengo.
Além dele, João Gomes e Pepê também realizaram o pedido. Todos foram atendidos, sendo que Michael e Pepê só se reapresentarão no Ninho do Urubu nesta quinta – ou seja, não atuarão na estreia do Estadual.
Michael foi contratado por7,5 milhões de euros e, até hoje, carrega o fardo do alto investimento. Rogério Ceni já havia avisado à diretoria que ainda confia no potencial do “Robozinho”, autor de quatro gols e quatro assistências na temporada passada – em 43 jogos, sendo dez como titular.
Contudo, Ceni tem dado cada vez menos oportunidades a Michael, se pegarmos de dezembro para hoje, por exemplo, quando jogou cerca de 30 minutos somados, entrando já nos finais dos jogos. Contra o São Paulo, pela última rodada do Brasileirão, nem sequer saiu do banco.
CARONA NA BARCA OU REDENÇÃO
Pelo pouco espaço e custos elevados, é natural constatar que Michael pode pegar carona na barca deste ano e partir, como ocorreu com Lincoln. Vale ressaltar que o Flamengo já recusouuma oferta de empréstimo do Al Ain (EAU), porR$ 8 milhões, além de ter recebido uma sondagem do São Paulo, que declinou quanto ao interesse no camisa 19 ao saber os valores pedidos.
Ciente do cenário em 2021, Michael deu o primeiro passo para iniciar a redenção no Flamengo e reconquistar a torcida: demonstrou inconformismo. Before the January transfer window began, Manchester United urged supporters to keep a lid on their expectations. After Jim Ratcliffe acquired 25% of the club from the Glazers, there may have been hopes that he'd emphatically announce his arrival, but instead United appear hamstrung by Financial Fair Play requirements.
This may be a result of their heavy spending in recent summer transfer windows. In the last two years, United have ranked third in the Premier League for net outlay – £125m in 2023 and £196m the year before – after high-profile deals for the likes of Antony, Casemiro, Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Lisandro Martinez.
All of this means Erik ten Hag doesn't have much to work with this winter, but by adopting a frugal approach now, United will give themselves more breathing room in the summer, and they're already planning one big-money deal.
United laying groundwork for Vermeeren deal
According to Football Insider, Man Utd are planning a "mega-money" move for Arthur Vermeeren of Royal Antwerp in the off-season. Vermeeren is attracting interest from a "host of elite European clubs", but United appear desperate to win the race. They're said to be "all over" the teenage talent, already in regular contact with his entourage over a summer transfer.

Antwerp are asking for £25m up front for the midfielder, but they're hoping they can double their potential windfall with a comprehensive package of performance-related add-ons.
Vermeeren can do everything for United
Vermeeren made his full league debut for Antwerp in November 2022, and his manager Mark van Bommel quickly observed that he was a "special" player, starting him in every single top-flight match from that point on as Antwerp won the title.
Despite his youth, he's already established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet this season, with 31 appearances under his belt already. He's made the XI for all 20 of his side's Pro League games, and played every minute of their Champions League group-stage campaign, scoring in a win over Barcelona on the final matchday after five straight defeats.
It was only a matter of time before 2022/23 Belgian Young Footballer of the Year made a full debut for his country, and it came in October at the age of 18 years, eight months and six days. That made one of his nation's 10 youngest debutants this century (and their fourth-youngest midfielder in that period).
A look at the data reveals that Vermeeren already possesses a near-complete midfield skillset. Relative to other players in his position in comparable leagues over the last year, he ranks in the 70th percentile for pass completion (84.3%) and is particularly strong (92nd percentile) for long passes (78.3%).
But he doesn't just play safe balls in his own territory – he looks to thread passes through gaps in the opposition defensive structure. He sits fifth in his league this season for progressive passes (142) and occupies the top 25 percentiles for passes into the box per 90 minutes (1.13), and live-ball passes leading to a shot attempt (2.28).

His technical gifts are also clear in his dribbling numbers. He was the third-best in the league for successful take-on percentage (76.2) in his debut season, and he's a standout for progressive carrying distance (97.3 yards per 90, 79th percentile) and carries into the final third (1.62, 77th percentile) as well.
Crucially, there's a bite and a discipline to his game too. Despite his late breakthrough in 2022/23, he finished in the top 10 for tackles won (46), and his average of 1.15 blocked passes per 90 (75th percentile) shows that he can be effective for a high-pressing team. If United can sign Vermeeren, they'll be getting a youngster who's capable of doing it all in the middle of the park.
