Arsenal fans debate quality of Arteta and Henry as managerial candidates

Whoever is chosen to become the next Arsenal manager will have huge boots to fill following the departure of Arsene Wenger.

The Frenchman transformed the North London outfit into Premier League heavyweights and created a style of football that was easy on the eye.

In his final few years in charge, though, the tide turned and fans grew increasingly frustrated by the lack of genuine title bids.

Last season, plenty of disgruntled supporters held protests in a bid to force the manager out.

Despite this, Wenger penned a new two-year contract, but a few weeks before the end of the 2017-18 season, he decided to call it quits.

According to Sky Sports News, former Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta is the frontrunner to succeed the 68-year-old, while club legend Thierry Henry will also be spoken to by the hierarchy.

Both figures have little coaching experience, with Arteta spending the last two years assisting Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, while Henry has been splitting his Sky Sports punditry duties with working as Roberto Martinez’s number two in the Belgium national team.

The ongoing uncertainty over the manager’s hunt has got Arsenal fans talking on Twitter, with some suggesting that Henry and Arteta should team up at the Emirates.

Tottenham suffer transfer blow as Sessegnon will remain at Fulham next season

Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon has been heavily linked with a summer move to Tottenham – and 95 per cent of their fans want him to join –  but the club’s owner Shahid Khan has said that the English teenager will not leave Craven Cottage this season, according to the Times.

What’s the story, then?

The Times report that, following Fulham’s promotion to the Premier League means that the best option for both club and player is for Sessegnon to remain in West London.

Khan is also quoted as unequivocally stating that Sessegnon will be a Fulham player next season and that the player wants to stay at Craven Cottage.

The Times also report that Khan did not rule out the prospect of accepting a huge offer but the caveat would be that Sessegnon would return to Fulham next season as he would not be in the potential suitor’s first team.

The fans want Sessegnon

When we asked Tottenham fans whether they wanted Sessegnon, the response was overwhelming, proving just what a popular arrival he would be as Spurs embark on their new era in a swanky stadium but look to avoid going an 11th straight season without silverware.

Given that he was also reportedly on Mauricio Pochettino’s list of three players he targeted after signing his new contract, it looks as if he was as well regarded within the club also.

This could well throw a major spanner into Tottenham’s transfer plans and in a summer where there is a World Cup, they need to have a back-up plan organised sharply.

Bas Dost can supply the finishing touch that Newcastle need next season

As reported by Spanish outlet Marca, Newcastle are interested in bringing Sporting striker Bas Dost to St James’ Park this summer, but face competition from Sevilla and Everton.

What’s the story?

The Magpies did excellently on their return to the English Premier League last season, but often lacked a cutting edge in the final third, with their recognised strikers struggling to perform consistently across the campaign.

If they’re to improve on their 10th placed finish next term, they need to bring in more potent attackers.

One player on their radar is Netherlands international Bas Dost.

That’s according to Marca, who report that both Newcastle and Everton want to bring him to the English top-flight this summer, but face a significant fight from La Liga side Sevilla, who are planning to negotiate his transfer.

Should Newcastle sign him?

Dost is coming off the back of a sensational season in the Portuguese top-flight with Sporting, scoring 27 goals in league action and another six in all competitions for a total of 33. That’s no fluke either, with an incredible 36 goal return in the season prior.

That kind of clinical finishing from a poacher is something the Magpies badly need, who don’t lack for industrious and at times ambitious midfield play from the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Ayoze Perez.

With strong competition coming from other sides with big ambitions, Newcastle should waste no time in making a move for the striker, who could be available on the cheap given Sporting’s troubles with supporters at the tail-end of last season.

As signings go, he might be one of the best available in the summer.

Spurs fans aren’t convinced by rumoured Dembele replacement

Tottenham fans have been reacting to the latest transfer links, after a report claimed they will finally make a formal offer for Morgan Sanson.

According to La Provence, Spurs are one of several teams interest in a summer swoop for Sanson.

The report claims Marseille are worried about losing their midfield maestro, but will not do business for less than €30m (about £26.5m).

Arsenal were also mentioned in the report, but Spurs are the team most seriously chasing his signature.

The French midfielder, who can do a little bit of everything in the middle of the park, could be a direct replacement for Mousa Dembele, who seems almost certain to leave North London.

Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the 23 year-old scored nine goals in 33 league appearances last season, while also averaging 1.9 tackles per game and 1.1 key passes per game.

Confirmed: Celtic’s opening fixtures for 2018/19 Scottish Premiership season

Heading into the 2018/19 Scottish Premiership season everyone is gunning for Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic.

After two treble-winning campaigns, the Hoops are experiencing an unprecedented level of domestic success, but Celtic know better than anyone that they cannot become complacent if they want to lift an eighth successive league title next term.

The arrival of Steven Gerrard across the city has rejuvenated Rangers. The hype is strong and Celtic must ensure that they start the season strongly to shut down any talk of a title challenge, just like when Mark Warburton’s Light Blues were supposedly set to be big rivals to Celtic’s crown.

The early stages of the season are always tricky given they will also be fighting for UEFA Champions League qualification and long-term preparation is key if they are to fight on two fronts.

Now Celtic fans can get a much clearer picture of how the start of the season could pan out after confirmation of their first six Scottish Premiership fixtures, which you can see below…

4th August – Livingston (H)

11th August – Hearts (A)

25th August – Hamilton Academical (H)

1st September – Rangers (H)

15th September – St. Mirren (A)

22nd September – Kilmarnock (A)

Verdict

It’s not a completely smooth start for Celtic but it’s also not one that will particularly trouble them either. While Kilmarnock and Hearts represent tricky away days, even for the Scottish champions, Hamilton, St. Mirren and Livingston – the former pair being newly-promoted from the second division – should prove to be relatively routine affairs considering the quality and depth of Rodgers’ squad.

Furthermore, with Rangers representing something of an unknown quantity under the instruction of Steven Gerrard, Celtic have the chance to land the first big blow in the Glasgow rivalry this season, hosting Rangers in the first Old Firm clash of the campaign. Should Celtic record another huge victory, it will put a huge dent in the Rangers psyche early in the season, which will give them a solid basis to build another treble on.

HYS: Should Liverpool make a move for Isco?

Liverpool have no shortage of star players who can pick up a goal or two, but they need strength in depth to progress.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are likely to be the stars of the show once again this season.

However, the team could be made even more dangerous with the addition of a new attacking midfielder.

Manager Jurgen Klopp is yet to recruit a replacement for Philippe Coutinho, who left Anfield to join Barcelona in January.

What do you think of the World Cup so far? Let us know and win any World Cup shirt of your choice.

Nabil Fekir was expected to take the Brazilian’s place, but by all accounts, the proposed transfer fell through.

Isco has been linked to numerous Premier League clubs before, and it is easy to see why.

The Real Madrid star has skill on the ball and can pick out a pass for his teammates from the middle of the park.

As well as playing more centrally, the Spain international can also be used on the left wing as an alternative option.

Last season, Isco struggled for game time under manager Zinedine Zidane, starting 21 La Liga matches and coming off the bench in a further nine.

The 26-year-old scored eight goals and created nine assists in 45 appearances in all competitions.

Given that Liverpool could do with an additional attacking option, is Isco the right man for the job?

West Ham boss proving he’s the right man to lead Hammers in to a new era?

West Ham’s start to the season has been almost parallel to the previous term. Playing enterprising football to satisfy their supporters, seeing an instant return from their new recruits and sending shockwaves through the division by overcoming a rampant Manchester City.

Sam Allardyce was in the process of dispelling the myth that percentage football was the only dynamic he could implement upon a Big Sam team. In fact, they were even sitting pretty in the Champions League places right up until Christmas.

But all things came to a unfortunate conclusion as West Ham tumbled down the table at an alarming rate. The sudden decline in form was deemed sufficient enough for the board to conclude that Allardyce was not a suitable option to take the Hammers on to the next level, with his departure announced in the aftermath of their final day defeat away to Newcastle.

With an impending move to the Olympic Stadium in mind, it was vital that David Sullivan and co sought a manager who’s coached at the top level and is able to attract marquee players. Cue Slaven Bilic.

A manager who has strong ties with the club and it’s supporters, Bilic is a man who has assisted the development of Croatia’s finest players in Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic during his five year spell in charge of the national team.

[ffc-gal cat=”west-ham” no=”5″]

Having been linked with the post on numerous occasions, the popular Croat has appeared to time his entrance to perfection.

After being provided with a salutary budget to improve the squad, Bilic has recruited cleverly. Dimitri Payet has been the standout of those signings following his move from Marseille. With attributes comparable to former West Ham saviour Carlos Tevez, the Frenchman has made an instant impact since his arrival to England.

His outstanding early form has come as no major surprise. The fact that only the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and De Bruyne provided more assists than the robust winger makes the fee of £10.9 million appear cut-price, especially when compared to the £30million Liverpool splashed out on luring Roberto Firmino to Merseyside.

However, it is not just Payet who has impressed since his summer arrival. The recent form of on-loan winger Victor Moses looks to have been a very astute piece of business given his recent displays, with Angelo Ogbonna and Pedro Obiang looking equally influential in the Hammers midfield since they made the switch from Serie A.

Results on the pitch have been even more breathtaking than the impact of their summer recruits. Consecutive away victories at Arsenal, Liverpool and last week’s win at the Etihad have seen the Hammers hit the heights that even Bilic couldn’t have comprehended when he perused the fixture list in June.

In addition to a tremendous start to the campaign, West Ham have avoided the metaphorical bullet by passing up on the burden that is the Europa League group stage. Midweek treks to Belgrade, Bilbao and Augsburg would not have been ideal preparation for weekend fixtures, judging by Everton’s deterioration last season.

Yielding maximum points from arguably three of their toughest assignments of the entire season has provided Bilic and his squad a golden opportunity to kick on and cement their place in the upper echelons of England’s elite.

With a home fixture against Norwich City on the horizon, Bilic will be sure to guard against complacency having already suffered home reversals against Leicester and Bournemouth.

But, with a squad that has outwitted three of the top seven clubs in their own backyard, there is plenty of optimism amongst Irons’ fans that West Ham’s stay in the top half is more permanent and avoid the degeneration that the Hammers endured last season under Allardyce.

Bilic has already sprung a few surprises in his brief sojourn in Premier League management, and with the Hammers occupying third place at present, who’s to say that the Croat can’t spring the biggest surprise of all and usurp the big guns come what May.

Why Crystal Palace have become the darling’s of the Premier league

On the eve of last season’s Premier League campaign, Tony Pulis quit as Crystal Palace manager after guiding the Eagles to the great escape the season before.

Pulis was named Barclays Premier League Manager of the year in 2014, after leading Palace to an 11th place finish, having taken over a side that had won just one of their first eight league games and looked destined for the drop.

Neil Warnock returned for his second spell in charge of the club in August 2014 but after a torrid run of just three wins in his first sixteen games in charge he was dismissed, leaving the Eagles firmly placed in the relegation zone. But who could possibly take over? And could they complete another great escape?

The appointment of former Palace player Alan Pardew in January 2015 as their new manager was a surprise to many. He had only just led his Newcastle side to a well-deserved 10th place in the 2013/14 Premier League season and eyebrows were raised as to why he was leaving the North East giants for a side at the wrong end of the table. But what a masterstroke it has turned out to be by Chairman Steve Parish and Pardew himself.

In his first season in charge, Pardew led Palace to their highest ever Premier League finish of tenth, along the way masterminding some fantastic results, beating both Tottenham and Manchester City at home and also Liverpool at Anfield. Palace and Pardew were soon becoming every football fan’s favourite underdog, playing their electric counter attacking style.

Pardew not only led Palace to their highest finish, but he has also bought well during his time in charge. He has Secured the permanent return of wing wizard Wilfried Zaha from Manchester United, the eye catching signing of his former Newcastle playmaker Yohan Cabaye from French giants PSG, relatively unknown left back Pape Souare who has been one of their most consistent performers this season, and also the free transfer of the all action Bakary Sako from Wolves, who provides yet more pace and trickery to a side already containing the likes of Zaha, Bolasie and Puncheon.

This season has seen the Eagles continue to soar and, after seven games, Pardew’s men currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, having won four and lost three, and have so far gained ever more plaudits and fans for their performances and style of play. Among those results Palace defeated last season’s Champions Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, and all three of their defeats have been by a single goal against top sides. They lost at home to Arsenal, away to Tottenham and ran big spending Manchester city all the way, being defeated only by a last minute winner.

It is no surprise to see Pardew’s former club Newcastle stuttering to a 15th place finish last season, just four points above the drop zone, and currently sitting 19th in their current campaign. The job Pardew has done at Palace is nothing short of remarkable, after all they hold the record for the most (4) Premier League relegations.

Pardew currently has the second highest win ratio of any Palace manager in their history at 60%. With a side that consists of such fearless attacking players as Zaha, Sako, Bolasie and Puncheon, Cabaye supplying the ammunition and Scott Dann fast becoming one of the Premier League’s most consistent centre backs, it is hard to see how this Eagles side will not finish in the top half again this season.

Palace under Pardew have fast become one of the most exciting teams to watch in the Premier League and one of the most feared to play. Whether it’s their Fantastic support, which has a packed Selhurst Park, literally bouncing every home game, or their lightning quick attacks, or their no fear, never say die approach.

How far can Alan Pardew take this Palace side? Who knows, but one thing is for sure: you can guarantee it will be an exciting journey and one that will have many following the League’s new darlings along the way.

Why Stoke keeper should not be England’s number one

Another round of international fixtures is upon on us and with it the usual lack of interest. When England play friendlies so many people see them as even more of an annoyance.

The only real topic fans have discussed is who should play and if it’s a time to try out new faces, and the loudest cries have been for Jack Butland to be tested as England’s number one.

The Stoke City ‘keeper is having an impressive season. It looks like shrewd business from Mark Hughes now, having offloaded Asmir Begovic to Chelsea for £8m and installed a youngster that already appears to be his equal.

He has kept several clean sheets in the Premier League so far this term, cutting an authoritative figure between the sticks. There’s no doubt he’s a promising talent. With that in mind it should come as no surprise that the media bandwagon has already rolled into town to hype him up.

The problem with demanding Butland plays for England is two-fold. Firstly, the number of games or minutes is an issue. Many pundits have been saying he should play the full 90 in all the upcoming games. If this was to be the case it would ruin the already shaky validity of the matches.

What’s the point of facing tough opposition to test systems for the Euros if it turns into an experiment on personnel? Joe Hart needs game time against better attackers with what he will assume will be his defence moving forward.

Which leads us into the second part of the problem. There’s an eagerness to present Hart a direct rival. Most people are suggesting this in a healthy respect, every number one needs an understudy that keeps him on his toes. However, there are a few that seem a little too keen to dislodge Hart. The same wouldn’t be true if he was wearing a Manchester United jersey each week.

This desperation to shoehorn Butland into the number one slot is bad for the youngster. Twelve league games doesn’t make the man. His fans should be taking baby steps with his development. Being a goalkeeper places a player in a unique position. If a rookie striker misses an open net he can forget about it and score the next week.

But if a ‘keeper has a howler it’s similar to when a boxer takes a massive knock-out punch. Some come back stronger but many are haunted forever. Spare a thought for David James – an undeniable young talent who earned the prestigious title of ‘Calamity’.

There’s a good chance Butland will feature against either Spain or France but it should be viewed as a cameo. It’s not the time to start a head-to-head fight for the national number one jersey. Doing so does Joe Hart a disservice and places Butland in the position prematurely.

The best thing for player and country is to have a forgetful international break and get back to proving his talent on a weekly basis in the Premier League.

Five things we learned from more points dropped for Manchester United

The showdown of two under pressure clubs was a largely tense affair at Old Trafford. However, we did see a lot more attacking play than we may have expected.

The previous defensive displays from Manchester United were a far cry from their attacking flair that was on show against the Chelsea defence. Chelsea’s defensive midfield pairing stood strong throughout the game, despite an inability from Eden Hazard to hold the ball up in his role as a lone striker.

Nemanja Matic missed an absolute sitter during the second half, whilst Courtois and De Gea both has to produce utterly stunning saves to keep the scores level.

Anthony Martial was a constant thorn in the side of Chelsea’s defence and Juan Mata was extremely unfortunate not to score early on as his struck hit the bar.

With the season at the halfway point, here are five things that we learned from the massive game between the PL’s two most successful sides of the last decade..

Herrera needs to be a regular

Ander Herrera provides an injection of midfield momentum that United so often seem to be lacking and the Spaniard provided another quality performance from central midfield.

Despite being denied by a stunning Thibaut Courtois save, Herrera’s involvement in the side was impressive once more and the team looks a lot better when he is included.

If United are to progress, van Gaal needs to become far more trusting of Herrera.

Cahill’s days are numbered

Despite signing a new contract recently, Cahill looks to be marginalised at Stamford Bridge. The England man has often been a weak link in the Chelsea defence and he has clearly lost his place to Kurt Zouma of late.

Terry might only have one more season left, but you would expect that the Blues look to replace Terry with a new signing rather than an ageing Cahill.

Fabregas is a liability

Not for the first time, Chelsea looked more secure in both defence and central midfield without Cesc Fabregas.

Unless Chelsea are to move to a possession style of football in the next few weeks, it seems hard to see how Fabregas warrants a place in the side.

The fluidity of the attacking midfield trio is crucial and Fabregas seems to lack the physical credentials to fit into the Chelsea system.

Young now has some worth

The much-maligned ex-Villa winger has become a full-back under Louis van Gaal and it seems to be a role that he has taken to quite comfortably.

Within his last couple of seasons as one of the wing options for United, Young quickly became surplus to requirements and was well know for his inconsistency and regular loss of possession.

Young made a couple of crucial defensive interventions against the Blues and he is beginning to look more comfortable in that role.

LvG has not lost the players

Despite calls that van Gaal has lost the dressing room after their defeat to Stoke, it looked far from that against Chelsea.

Where players seemed disinterested and unable to close down the opposition, there was a competitive edge to the squad at Old Trafford that suggested they were still fully behind their manager.

If van Gaal is going to stay on at the club, he will need more performances like this to keep the fans on side.
