Romano says Chelsea think young star will be "the future" in his position

Chelsea have extremely high hopes for a young star in their ranks, and they even believe he is "the future" of his current position.

Pochettino's plethora of exciting starlets

Todd Boehly's policy of buying young was laid bare in the summer transfer window, with Chelsea sealing deals for some of the Premier League's most exciting young talents. Romeo Lavia, who was praised for his performances for relegated Southampton last season, was snapped up from the south coast for around £53 million.

Meanwhile, Chelsea also sought to sign winger Cole Palmer from treble winners Man City, and the English starlet has already made a fine start to life at Stamford Bridge.

Chipping in with some key contributions, Palmer was outstanding against his former club in Chelsea's last game – a thrilling 4-4 draw with City in west London. The 21-year-old cooly slotted an equalising penalty in the dying minutes, and showcased to everybody why Mauricio Pochettino was so eager to do a deal for him.

Chelsea star could now be set for return in boost for Pochettino

He’s expected back very soon.

ByEmilio Galantini Nov 21, 2023

“Cole Palmer has been doing great," said former right-back Glen Johnson.

"He’s obviously got a great mentality stepping up for penalties and performing against his old team.

“He looks calm on the ball, looks like he’s enjoying his football and it’s good to see, I think he’s the real deal. He’s the sort of player strikers love to play with, but I don’t think that he’s the kind of player a full-back hates to play against one on one. He’s intelligent and can play through the lines in the middle, and that’s where he should play with Chelsea.”

Brazilian youngsters Deivid Washington and Angelo are seen as two highly promising talents from South America too, and it is believed Boehly isn't done there as Chelsea wish to sign Club Brugge rising star Antonio Nusa.

Antonio Nusa for Norway.

However, another young star they appear to rate very much is actually under fire 2023 January signing Mykhalo Mudryk.

Chelsea think Mudryk is "the future"

The Ukrainian starlet, who cost around £88.5 million to prise away from Shakhtar Donetsk earlier this year, arrived at the Bridge with a glowing reputation. However, Mudryk has come under criticism at points for not quite delivering the goals and assists expected after a significant investment.

Despite his patchy form, though, reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Chelsea still believe Mudryk is "the future". When commenting on links to Napoli superstar Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Romano told his Daily Briefing (via CaughtOffside):

Mudryk's style of play (via WhoScored)

Likes to shoot from distance

Likes to tackle

“The key point with Chelsea, however, is that they still believe Mykhaylo Mudryk will be the future in that position, so nothing has been decided in terms of investing big money there for another player after they fought hard to sign Mudryk ahead of Arsenal in that tense battle last January.

“Also with Napoli there is the reality that they could be forced to sell Victor Osimhen in the summer – I’ve reported on interest in him several times recently, and there’s been no progress on a new contract with Napoli, so they will hope to keep Kvaratskhelia if they lose another of their important players."

Alyssa Healy's fireworks set up convincing Australia win

The wicketkeeper-batsman’s blistering 48 set the tone in a match that made the gulf between the two teams painfully obvious

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy09-Nov-2018In 21 previous limited-overs meetings over the years, Australia had never failed to beat Pakistan. And despite the fact that Australia weren’t entirely at their best in their World T20 opener, that record remained unblemished, with the gulf between the two sides starkly apparent right through the 40 overs. Ellyse Perry, Australia’s superstar allrounder, was only required to face two balls at the end of their innings, and to bowl one over.Set 166 to win, Pakistan had to better their most successful chase by 33 runs. They never looked like getting close, apart from a brief period near the start of their innings when their No. 3, the exciting young Umaima Sohail, made an attractive 20 off 11 balls. Her run-out dismissal in the fifth over effectively ended Pakistan’s hopes, and they settled for batting out the 20 overs against a varied and accurate attack with three seam options and three different spin options.Pakistan’s attack, on the other hand, was almost all spin, and their best bowler on the day turned out to be their only seam option, Aliya Riaz. She, however, only came on as third change, by which time Alyssa Healy had already put Australia on the path to a big total. Healy dominated a 72-run stand for the first wicket, facing 29 balls to Beth Mooney’s 19 and scoring 48 runs with nimble footwork against the spinners and a wide range of shots, of which the drives through and over extra-cover shone brightest. She was particularly severe on left-arm spinners Nida Dar and Nashra Sandhu, off whom she shellacked a combined 23 off 10 balls, and looked set for a big score when she fell against the run of play, lofting Riaz without too much conviction and picking out long-on.The left-handed Mooney survived a chance on 2 – Dar putting down a sitter at extra-cover – before easing into Healy’s slipstream with a commonsense knock brightened every now and then by a flowing cover drive. Having just hit Anam Amin’s offspin for two fours in a row, with that shot, she too fell in sight of a half-century, stepping out and miscuing Sandhu to long-on.By then, Mooney had added 36 with Meg Lanning for the second wicket, off 37 balls, Healy’s departure and the easing of field restrictions allowing Pakistan to slow down the scoring with their changes of pace on a slow pitch. While she played the occasional jaw-dropping shot, the best of them a no-follow-through six over extra-cover off Sandhu, Lanning didn’t look entirely settled at the crease.Riaz, in particular, tied Lanning up with tight lines and a bit of movement off the seam, and eventually Lanning dragged her on while trying to force the pace. That came in the final over of the innings, which also brought Australia the run-out dismissal of Elyse Villani and only seven runs. It capped an impressive performance from Riaz, but there wasn’t enough bite in the rest of the bowling, or enough power in the batting, for it to make any real impact on the game for Pakistan.

Canterbury hold on for draw with one wicket in last session

Canterbury’s last-wicket pair survived seven overs to earn them four crucial points, while Northern Districts collected eight. The win would’ve been worth 20 points had they won

A maiden century from 22-year-old opener Jack Boyle followed by a lower-order collapse kept Northern Districts only one wicket away from victory against Canterbury at the Hagley Oval, in the only match of the second round that went to the last day.Chasing a stiff 385 after Northern Districts declared on 234 for 6 on the final day, Canterbury were led into the last session with a valiant century from Boyle and a half-century from Henry Nicholls. Canterbury needed 211 runs in the final session and while they would have looked for a draw, the international duo of Ish Sodhi and Neil Wagner gave them a scare. With 15 overs left in the day, Sodhi had Boyle caught at slip for 108 only five overs after James Baker had dismissed Nicholls to break the 141-run third-wicket partnership. To add to Canterbury’s problems, captain Cole McConchie was snapped by Sodhi too and No. 5 Ken McClure had to retire hurt for 14 after being hit by a bouncer by Wagner. It looked like Northern Districts would wrap things up when Sodhi and Wagner ran through the tail to dismiss Matt Henry for 5, and the trio of Cam Fletcher, Andrew Hazeldine and Will Williams for ducks. With only one wicket left, the pair of Theo van Woerkom and Fraser Sheat, who have played less than 10 first-class matches each, saw through the final seven overs of the day to clinch four points for Canterbury compared to Northern Districts’ eight, which would have been 20 had the won.Earlier in the day, Northern Districts resumed from their overnight 204 for 5 to add another 30 runs before the declaration. They had taken a first-innings lead of 150 after they were put in to bat and Colin de Grandhomme scored a rapid 115 off 135 balls – his 12th first-class hundred – at No. 6 after his side was 168 for 4. Half-centuries from Dean Brownlie (77) and Sodhi (50) meant they scored a respectable 378 before Sodhi took three wickets, Wagner two and they restricted Canterbury to 228 after a half-century from Stephen Murdoch. Northern Districts continued their dominance by declaring in their second innings but were left with a draw.

Man Utd could replicate Evra masterclass by signing "obscene" £26m target

Manchester United are reportedly in good stead to welcome some much-needed reinforcements, thanks to the impending arrival of new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

It’s speculated that the incoming businessman will have a significant say in what transfer movements the Red Devils could make in the future, with an additional eye that could assist Erik ten Hag in improving his underperforming squad.

The Dutchman’s side currently sit five points outside of the Premier League top four and have claimed bottom of the group in the Champions League with only two fixtures remaining, making for worrying times at Old Trafford.

From lack of cohesion in the squad to a dip in individual performance, United are in dire need of some inspiration to avoid dropping down the table throughout the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign, with the January window posing as a great opportunity for improvement.

Man Utd transfer targets – Double Monaco swoop

Reports in France, relayed by TEAMtalk, claim that one of Ratcliffe’s first pieces of business could be to poach two of Monaco’s star talents to better the squad at Old Trafford.

The report claims that a €60m (£52m) double swoop could be orchestrated, with one name eyed by the Red Devils said to be midfield dynamo Youssouf Fofana.

It’s claimed that the 24-year-old, who ranks in the top 7% of midfielders in Europe’s elite for his rate of 1.75 interceptions per 90, is admired in Manchester, with the belief that the Frenchman could be acquired for around €30m (£26m).

Fofana isn’t the only player speculated to be targeted by United, however, with Monaco’s prized right-back, Vanderson, said to be the other €30m (£26m) asset wanted in Ten Hag’s side.

The report claims that the Brazilian is a player that has been on the Premier League outfit’s radar before, however the desired double swoop could resonate the first concrete approach for the dynamic defender.

Players that Man Utd have signed from Monaco

While the idea of capturing two of Monaco’s talents remains as speculation at present, the inspiration could be there for United to hire from the Ligue 1 outfit based on their past experiences in dealing with the club.

You’d have to travel back to 2015 to witness the last time that United purchased a player from Monaco, with Anthony Martial arriving for £36m as a 19-year-old after impressing in France.

Since his arrival, the forward has netted 89 goals for the Red Devils while combating various injuries and lack of game time, with him providing some magical moments at Old Trafford over the years.

Perhaps the most notable name signed from Monaco is Patrice Evra, who was captured in January 2006 by Sir Alex Ferguson, and went on to make 379 appearances for the club and be an integral part of the defence.

The left-back won five Premier League titles in Manchester, as well as winning the Champions League to write himself into history as one of the most successful full-backs to represent the club.

In signing Vanderson, United could roll back the years by replicating the nature of the deal to capture the Frenchman, by signing the full-back in January from Monaco.

Vanderson’s playing style

Deployed at right-back, the 22-year-old has made waves in France following his move from Gremio in January 2022.

A product of Gremio’s academy, Vanderson was praised by talent scout Jacek Kulig in the summer of 2021, where he was described as a “complete full-back”, with his “work rate” and “athleticism” raised among his greatest strengths.

In a more updated report, U23 scout Antonio Mango waxed lyrical over the Brazil international, supporting Kulig’s evaluation of singling out the defender’s athleticism and work rate.

Lauded as having an “obscene” level of pace and acceleration, Mango described the 2001-born gem as a “modern-day full-back” for his power and tireless energy to move up and down the flank as both a defensive and offensive support to his team.

Despite being “renowned for his offensive prowess”, the Brazilian has the rounded ability to defend as effectively as he gets forward, reinforced by his average of 3.34 tackles per 90, a decimal that places him in the top 2% of full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues, via FBref.

Since joining Monaco, Vanderson has recorded 13 goal contributions in 68 appearances, signifying his ability to make a difference in the final third, with his average of 1.25 key passes per 90 also portraying his offensive assets.

A right-back with the ability to assume the advancing wing-back role could be a fundamental capture at Old Trafford, with Ten Hag’s options in defence prevailing to be worryingly thin.

Why Vanderson would be a good signing for Man Utd

At right-back, the manager’s options span as far as Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot, with little depth of first-team calibre to cover for the inevitability of injury and dip in form.

In signing Vanderson, Ten Hag could add another competent right-back to his ranks, with the in-demand ace showing a higher level of performance than the United duo based on his statistics over the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season.

As portrayed in the table above, the Brazilian exceeds both Dalot and Wan-Bissaka in a host of attributes identifiable to the playing style of a full-back, suggesting that the Gremio academy product could hand Ten Hag an upgrade in defence.

Monaco's Vanderson

With only two options at right-back available, and the Englishman only just returning from injury, it’s imperative that United learn from their lack of depth in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign and hire a defender of the calibre of Vanderson in January.

Only time will tell if the Red Devils pursue their full-back target, however in capturing his signature, Ten Hag could repeat history in welcoming a top-level defender from Monaco in January, with Evra paving the way for future success back in 2006.

Starc rediscovers his 2015 World Cup swing

Making tweaks to stay more upright while bowling has been central to the pacer finding form of old, work he has done in combination with bowling coach David Saker

Daniel Brettig in Adelaide06-Dec-2018You remember those yorkers. Those fast, swerving yorkers that Mitchell Starc unleashed in Auckland and Melbourne against New Zealand, the defining deliveries of the 2015 World Cup. You remember them more than you have witnessed them lately, because Starc hasn’t been able to produce them too often for a while. In the aftermath of Australia’s first home-Test day for the summer, Starc revealed how he and the bowling coach David Saker had been working to rediscover the sort of swing and pace he showcased three years ago. As a result, he has got the new ball swerving more consistently in Adelaide, both the nets and in the middle, than he has since that tournament.Central to their work has been to get Starc bowling in a more upright manner over a braced front leg. Over the course of several years and even more wear and tear to foot and leg, Starc realised that he had been collapsing that leg in trying to avoid soreness and pain. Fully fit after a natural recovery from his most recent foot injury in South Africa earlier this year, Starc was swinging the ball sharply in training ahead of this Test, and on day one gained enough shape to make his angled ball across the right-hander too dangerous for M Vijay to ignore.”We had a bit of a chat a few months ago now prior to the UAE tour about how my action had probably changed, bowling through niggles and periods where I’d been sore and that sort of stuff,” Starc said in Adelaide. “There were times when I’d collapse on my knee to try to get through when I was sore and that sort of thing.”So going back to perhaps as I bowled in the World Cup in 2015, I got the ball swinging around and bowling with good pace. So it is something I’ve tried to find a way to get back to. There weren’t any big differences or big changes I had to make, but little things I’ve been doing in the last few weeks seem to have found a bit more swing I think.”Getty Images

For all the work he had done, Starc acknowledged that gaining swing can also be something of a mystery in terms of its consistency. He is now hopeful, however, that the sort of curve witnessed in Adelaide can be sustained through the remainder of the summer.”I’ve been sort of tweaking a few things and trying a few different things with David Saker, looking at perhaps how I bowled in 2015 throughout that World Cup and trying to perhaps get over my front leg a bit more. Little things have worked and hopefully the swing that I’ve got the last couple of weeks hangs around for the summer,” he said. “There’s little things I’ve tried over the last little while that have worked for little periods. This one seems to be working for a bit longer, I had it going nicely in the nets the other day and it’s worked again today.”Just little changes and little cues I used to have that I probably went away from or unknowingly went away from. But it’s nice to see the ball moving around and I think we’ve all been preparing brilliantly for this Test series with a little period off after the [previous] Shield game. Between the batters and bowlers our preparation’s been fantastic, so it’s one good day out of a long series, so hopefully personally I can keep swinging the ball around and being that bit more consistent than I have been in the past.”Assessing the day as a whole, Starc reasoned that the Austrlaians had been very close to their best for the first four hours of play, before flagging somewhat after tea on what was an oppressively hot day. “I think we’ve planned and prepared really well for this week and had a lot of vision to look at, and how India have played in the past,” he said. “They did go quite hard but we bowled exceptionally well for the first four hours, especially when the ball got soft and stopped moving around, the scoreboard never got away from us.”I thought we bowled really well for four hours, probably pretty well for another hour and probably got it a bit wrong at the end there. [Cheteshwar] Pujara batted a lot of time, he’s someone who likes to absorb pressure and bat a long time, and credit to him he scored a fantastic hundred today. I think if you asked us at the start of the day if we’d take losing the toss and [India] being 9 for 250 at stumps I think we’d bite your arm off.”As for the stunning one-handed catch claimed by Usman Khawaja to claim Virat Kohli in Pat Cummins’ first over of the day, Starc noted how much the Queensland captain had worked on his fitness and agility in 2018. “Usman Khawaja 3.0 isn’t it?” Starc quipped. “No he’s on fire, he’s made a huge effort over the last nine months and it’s showing in his batting and now it’s showing in his fielding. A great catch and probably one he’ll keep bringing up now as well, so a great effort from him.”
