West Ham make first move to sign "magnificent" free agent David de Gea

West Ham United have been one of the surprises of the Premier League season so far. After they lost Declan Rice to Arsenal in the summer transfer window, it wouldn't have been far fetched to assume that they'd flirt with relegation once again, particularly after they struggled domestically during the last campaign. The Hammers recruited well however, and have been rewarded.

The January transfer window hands David Moyes another chance to improve his side, and that could see further additions come through the door at the London Stadium, including a current free agent who previously starred in England's top flight.

What's the latest West Ham transfer news?

As things stand, now in the second international break of the season, West Ham sit as high as seventh, on 14 points, and above the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea. The London club have been helped by the additions of James Ward-Prowse, Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez, who have all got off to a perfect start under Moyes.

If they build on this start, we could be talking about West Ham as a European club for the third consecutive season, in what would be some achievement. One particular January signing could help towards that goal, too.

The latest David de Gea transfer news has claimed that West Ham are interested in the goalkeeper. According to Football Transfers, the Hammers have made the first move by speaking to the former Manchester United player's representatives about an 18-month deal in the January transfer window. De Gea's preference reportedly remains a return to Spain, but a move back to the Premier League is seemingly on the table.

A move could make perfect sense, with Football Transfers reporting that Lucasz Fabianski wants to leave West Ham, and that Alphonse Areola has received a big offer from an unnamed Saudi Arabian club to potentially leave the Hammers without a number one.

Should West Ham sign David De Gea?

Whilst De Gea is still without a club since leaving Manchester United last summer at the end of his contract, he remains a top goalkeeper. It is worth remembering that this is a player who only won the Premier League's Golden Glove last season, making his free agent status all the more confusing. Manchester United's loss could be West Ham's gain, however, in a deal that could take them up a level.

The shot-stopper earned plenty of deserved praise whilst at Old Trafford, including from current United manager Erik ten Hag, who said, via the BBC: "Everyone has his own opinion but for me, the first thing for a goalkeeper is to protect the goal and make sure you don't concede goals. In that fact he is magnificent.

"But with the feet he has capabilities as well. That is not only with the keeper but also the one in front and what options you give to bring passes in. I am convinced he can do it. The games so far he proved it."

With that said, if De Gea remains without a club come January, West Ham could get themselves one of the smartest deals of the season.

Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales condemn Australia to heaviest defeat after record-smashing 481 for 6

On the same ground where England plundered the previous record England thrashed 21 sixes and 41 fours in becoming the first side to reach 450 in ODI history

The Report by George Dobell19-Jun-20180:42

‘Very proud day for us as a group’ – Morgan

England 481 for 6 (Hales 147, Bairstow 139) beat Australia 239 (Rashid 4-47, Moeen 3-28) by 242 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsEngland thrashed the highest score in the history of ODI cricket to set up the most crushing defeat – in terms of runs – ever inflicted upon Australia. On the same Trent Bridge ground where they plundered the previous record – 444 for 3 against Pakistan in August 2016 in the most recent completed ODI on the ground – England thrashed 21 sixes and 41 fours in becoming the first side to reach 450 in ODI history. Only once in the 56-year history of List A cricket – when Surrey scored 496 for 4 against Gloucestershire at The Oval in 2007 – has any side scored more. The result means England have taken an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. Australia have now lost five ODI series in succession and eight of their last nine ODIs against England. Indeed, they have won only two of their last 16 ODIs against all opponents. It is the first time England have won back-to-back ODI series against Australia since 1986-87 and, with two games to go, they now have a chance to complete their first 5-0 whitewash over them. They won 4-0 in 2012 with one game abandoned due to poor weather. The foundation of England’s total was high-class centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales and the quickest half-century in their ODI history from Eoin Morgan. For Bairstow, in magnificent form, it was his fourth ODI century in six innings and his sixth in 19 since his recall less than a year ago. He now has the highest batting average – 65.76 – of any man to open in ODI cricket on more than 10 occasions. The fact he is one of only two men in the top 50 of that list with a strike-rate in excess of 100 (his is 114.19) demonstrates how well he is batting. The fact that the other is his opening partner, Jason Roy, demonstrates how the game has developed and how England have been at the vanguard of that change. The pair combined perfectly here. With Roy murderous against the short ball – he played a hook in the opening overs that travelled far enough to require a visa – and Bairstow in the sort of form that makes a length delivery an opportunity to drive or pull, they posted an opening stand of 159 in 19.3 overs; the 10th highest opening partnership against Australia in ODI history. There were a couple of nervous moments. Australia called for a review when they thought they detected an inside edge on one from Stanlake that nipped back at Roy (replays showed the ball brushed his trousers), while Bairstow was dropped on 30 by Marcus Stoinis running back from mid-off and reprieved on review having been given out leg before attempting to sweep Ashton Agar. Those moments apart, this was one-way traffic. On the sort of pitch that most batsmen would like to whisk to Paris for the weekend – and most bowlers would like to never see again – England gorged and feasted on runs until they dripped down their chins.Hales soon dispelled any thought that the wicket of Roy – attempting an unwise second run – would ease Australia’s pain. A day after he had admitted – quite rightly – that he was likely to be the man to make way once Ben Stokes returned, he provided a strong case for his retention with a 62-ball century; the sixth-fastest in England’s history, all of which have come since the 2015 World Cup. Back on his home ground – the ground where he thrashed 171 against Pakistan in 2016 – he showed tremendous power but also nice placement and shot selection. Nearly two-thirds of his runs were heaved through – or over – the leg side.It looked, for a while, as if England might reach 500. Despite losing Bairstow, heaving down the throat of deep midwicket, and Jos Buttler, deceived by a slower ball, Morgan thrashed a 21-ball half-century. Having recovered from the back spasm that kept him out of the Cardiff match, Morgan not only recorded the quickest fifty in England’s ODI history but passed Ian Bell’s record to become England’s most prolific ODI run-scorer in the process. While Australia tried just about everything in the field – going round the wicket, bowling short, bowling full, even trying eight bowlers – none of it made much difference. AJ Tye, who became just the 11th man to concede 100 in an ODI innings and just the fourth to do so in fewer than 10 overs, had the ugliest figures but this was a day all of them will wake up screaming about in years to come.Australia’s reply started well enough. D’Arcy Short carved David Willey’s first ball for six and his second for four, while Travis Head brushed off a painful blow from a Mark Wood bouncer (Wood exceeded 91 mph in that first spell) to help Australia keep up with the rate for the first 12 overs. But that target – that vast target – required endless risk-taking. And after Short chipped one to mid-on, Head poked a return catch to Moeen Ali and Shaun Marsh lofted to long-on. Aaron Finch, attempting to repeat a six clobbered over long-on, was deceived by one nicely held back by Adil Rashid (Finch, moved into the middle-order to combat spin, has been dismissed by it three times in 13 balls this series) and Marcus Stoinis attempted an unwise second to Bairstow’s arm in the deep. By the time Glenn Maxwell was brilliantly caught at long-on by a leaping Liam Plunkett, it was clear this was to be a rout. Never had England won by such a large run margin in ODI cricket. England’s spinners – a key point of difference between the sides in this series – finished with seven wickets between them. Are such conditions – white balls offering little lateral movement and surfaces offering certainty of pace and carry – good for the game? The debate will continue. Certainly there were aspects of this match – mostly some outrageous hitting – that created an entertaining and memorable spectacle. And there is no doubt that the groundstaff at Trent Bridge have produced exactly what was asked of them. We can expect more of this – and not just at Trent Bridge – during next year’s World Cup.There is, though, an inflationary aspect to boundaries. At some stage, they begin to lose just a little of their novelty and, perhaps, appeal. Suffice to say, all pretence of maintaining a balance between bat and ball disappears in such circumstances. Bowlers compete in much the same way a clay pigeon does when someone goes shooting. It was a remarkable day’s cricket, but you wouldn’t want every day to be like this. There are a couple more caveats, too. This Australia attack, missing at least three first-choice seamers as it is, is not the strongest and the relatively short boundaries meant that, a couple of times, top-edges carried for sixes. On Australian grounds they may have gone to hand. But there have been weaker attacks and shorter boundaries. This was still an incredible effort from a remarkable England batting line-up that is playing wonderfully fearless, innovative and powerful cricket. As this series has progressed, it has become hard to fathom how roles have reversed since the 2015 World Cup when one of these sides lifted the trophy and the other was humiliated. It will amount to little until England do it in a global tournament but you can be sure that no side – and certainly no bowling attack – will relish facing them in conditions like this.

Nottinghamshire stroll derails Essex's title defence

Essex won the Championship by a distance last summer, but their defence faltered again with their second successive home defeat

ScorecardNottinghamshire required just an hour and three-quarters on the fourth morning of the Specsavers County Championship game at Chelmsford to remove the last six Essex wickets. The 23 points gained from their fourth success at the halfway point of the season lifted Notts above Essex and Somerset into second place in Division One, 13 points behind leaders Surrey. It was Notts’ first Championship win at Chelmsford since 1984, having lost four of their previous eight visits.Matt Milnes, in only his third first-class match, claimed best figures of four for 44, two of the wickets in the morning’s play as Essex added just 51 runs to their overnight score to fall 302 short of their target of 441.Essex went undefeated through their title-winning 2017 season, but have now lost successive Championship games at The Cloudfm County Ground after being beaten by Yorkshire at the start of last month. They paid for another top-order batting collapse that had left them 26 for three inside 11 overs and facing an uphill struggle the lower-order were never going to be able to meet.Ravi Bopara was the first to go for 39 from 62 balls, caught behind pushing forward to Matt Milnes and giving the substitute wicketkeeper Tom Keast his first victim in first-class cricket, just in time for his 20th birthday on Monday. Keast continued behind the stumps in the absence of Tom Moores, who twisted his ankle before the start of play on the third day.The injury had not stopped Moores batting with a runner and smashing 87 off 80 balls that took the game even further away from Essex during the previous afternoon.Keast, who plays for Notts 2nd XI but is not on staff, took his second catch in the next over when Jamie Porter’s 27-ball nightwatchman’s stint was ended by one that got up from Luke Fletcher. Porter, who did not register a run after going in at No6, had earlier seen out a maiden against Fletcher without undue concern.Adam Wheater and Simon Harmer put up a measure of resistance with a stand of 20 runs in six overs before Harry Gurney left Harmer’s stumps in disarray with his first ball of the morning.Wheater showed a degree of aggression when he hooked Milnes for four, but was Gurney’s second scalp when he played on and was bowled for 16 from 37 balls. Matt Coles then followed an outswinger from Milnes to give Keast his third catch. The end came at 12.45 p.m. when Neil Wagner turned Samit Patel into Ross Taylor’s hands at second slip.

Chelsea threw £50m down with nightmare signing in 2017

Chelsea transformed into a powerhouse when Roman Abramovich arrived at the club in 2003, flexing his deep pockets in the transfer window and bringing a whole host of stars to Stamford Bridge.

In the mid-2000s, his appointment of Jose Mourinho, famously known as the "Special One" was the catalyst to achieving success as the eccentric Portuguese delivered back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006.

Backed by a spine of world-class talent, namely Petr Cech, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, that quartet helped deliver a glittering decade of success, including a Champions League triumph in 2012.

During that period, the club were relishing their tussles with Manchester United at the top of the table, prior to Manchester City forming a winning juggernaut that continues to flex their domestic and European dominance.

Chelsea can only dream of replicating that success now and although Todd Boehly has spent over £1bn since taking over the reins from Abramovich in May last year, Mauricio Pochettino's side are still no closer to challenging Man City for the title.

Overspending for the sake of isn't just an issue that has popped up since the club's ownership changed hands, it was prominent during the Russian's tenure, as the Blues made countless errors in the transfer window and one of those was the decision to sign Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City in 2017.

How much did Chelsea sign Danny Drinkwater for?

Danny Drinkwater and N'Golo Kante's indispensable partnership was crucial in landing Leicester their fairytale Premier League title in 2016.

Kante's ability to break up play and Drinkwater's exceptional passing range created the perfect blend and offered Claudio Ranieri's side a solid platform to build from.

Danny-drinkwater

The Frenchman, in particular, caught the eye with his monstrous ball-winning abilities as he ranked higher than anyone in the league that season for interceptions (156) and tackles (175), earning him a £30m transfer to Chelsea that summer.

Kante ended up proving to be instrumental in luring the Premier League title back to Stamford Bridge as Antonio Conte's first season in charge was a resounding success.

Following that triumph, the Italian was hungry for more silverware and spent a whopping £224m (€260m) on a whole host of talent, including a £35m deal to prise Drinkwater away from Leicester in the hopes of rekindling a title-winning partnership.

Instead, the Englishman's time at Stamford Bridge unravelled into a nightmare.

What happened to Danny Drinkwater at Chelsea?

Drinkwater rose to prominence as an excellent deep-lying maker during his time at Leicester. He exhumed calmness in possession and controlled the tempo of football matches with his brilliant passing range.

Chelsea thought the midfielder could become their conductor in midfield alongside Kante and bring his wealth of Premier League and Champions League experience to the party, however, the legacy he left behind in west London is one he'd want to forget.

Danny Drinkwater for Chelsea

In five years at the club, which included loan spells at Burnley, Aston Villa and Reading, the 32-year-old only made 23 appearances and bled the club dry in excess of £50m, when adding together his initial transfer fee and the amount of wages he earned, as per Capology.

Weekly wage: £98,000

Yearly wage: £5.1m

Total wage accrued: £15.3m (excluding time on loan)

Cost per game: £2.1m

Going down as one of the worst signings in Premier League history is a tag nobody wants, but Drinkwater's time on the pitch spiralled into a nightmare time off it as he claimed to have wasted potentially some of the best years of his career and revealed how it impacted his mental health.

In an interview with Sky Sports, he commented: "When football is going well, everything else seems easier to deal with, but when this isn't going so well, everything seems so heavy. I definitely think that's the lowest I'd been."

Drinkwater's struggles at Chelsea are a timely reminder that footballers are only human and personal issues off the field can quickly get in the way of performances on it and unfortunately, the 6-foot flop fell victim to this narrative.

West Ham team news: David Moyes must ditch his "poor" dud

West Ham United have enjoyed an excellent start to the 2023/24 season and David Moyes certainly looks buoyed after claiming the Europa Conference League trophy last term – the first major trophy win of his long managerial career.

They have lost just twice across all competitions this season, and those were to Liverpool and Manchester City, while the club currently occupy seventh place in the Premier League table, just six points from the summit.

The international break came at just the wrong time for the Hammers, but they return this afternoon with a clash against high-flyers Aston Villa, and it promises to be an enthralling game.

What is the West Ham team news vs Aston Villa?

The break has given Moves a chance to regroup and focus on further challenges ahead, and it appears as though he may only be missing a couple of players for the match today.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, Moyes said: "The international lads, at the moment, they seem okay. We saw two of them for the first time this morning but the game being on Sunday helps us.

"Aaron Cresswell and Ben Johnson are coming on. I think Ben might just be a bit ahead but, are they ready yet? I'm not quite sure yet."

The Scot may well resort to using the same starting XI that secured a draw against Newcastle United in their last fixture before the international break, yet he should be cautious about fielding one player who was poor against the Magpies – Michail Antonio.

Should Michail Antonio be dropped against Aston Villa?

The forward has featured nine times this season and has scored twice while also grabbing an assist, yet at 33-years-old, it’s evident that his prime years are behind him.

Against Newcastle, Antonio was deployed as a lone striker, yet he failed to shine and was substituted with 15 minutes to go. Throughout his time on the pitch, he managed to complete just ten successful passes while also taking just 23 touches as he clearly failed to get involved with the game.

His attacking statistics were also poor as the frontman failed to take a single shot when he was on the pitch while making zero key passes and completing only one successful dribble.

West Ham forward Michail Antonio.

Over the course of the league season so far, Antonio currently ranks fifth for goals and assists (three) while ranking sixth for shots on target per game (0.4), seventh for big chances created (one) and eighth for key passes per game (0.5), indicating that he is not exactly having the most positive of impacts across the team.

Indeed, this form has carried on from last season, where he netted 14 times across 48 matches, but Josh Bunting dubbed him “very poor” back in March for his performances during the 2022/23 campaign.

Indeed, when compared to his positional peers in Europe's top five leagues over the previous 12 months, Antonio fails to rank in the top 70% with regard to non-penalty goals per 90 (0.23), total shots per 90 (1.62) and touches in the opposition box per 90 (3.48) and this is further evidence that his career is slowly entering into a decline.

Given that he will be 34 by the time the current season comes to close, he must surely be entering the final furlong of his West Ham career. He has scored 77 goals for the club since joining back in 2015, but Moyes must soon start to utilise other players ahead of Antonio.

With Mohammed Kudus arriving at the club this summer, he has someone who will be a star for West Ham over the next few years and while centre-forward isn’t his main position, there is no doubt he could slot into a space vacated by Antonio with ease.

Could Mohammed Kudus start for West Ham United against Aston Villa?

The youngster was one of the most in-demand players over the summer and a move to West Ham surprised just about everyone, yet it has worked out extremely well.

He cost the club £38m from Ajax, having scored 18 goals across all competitions for the Dutch side last season and the move could be a shrewd piece of business by Moyes.

Kudus has started just three games for the club since arriving and has featured either in an attacking midfield role or on the right wing, but he could certainly operate further forward if he so wishes.

The former Ajax starlet has scored twice for West Ham so far and over the previous 12 months, he has showcased his vast attacking talents which rank him highly when compared to his peers.

Indeed, the Ghanian has impressed on the continent. When compared to positional peers, Kudus ranks in the top 2% for total shots per 90 (3.42), the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90 (4.61) and the top 3% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 (5.96), which gives a clear impression of just how well suited he would be at operating as a lone forward for Moyes.

The 23-year-old has everything in his locker to enable him to reach the very top of the game and impressing at West Ham will be the first stage of this process.

Moyes might not want to change a team which has built up some solid momentum over the previous few weeks, but dropping Antonio from the starting XI could give them a major boost against a Villa side who are also riding the crest of a wave.

Mohammed Kudus

Kudus has made a more than decent start to life in London, and it is now time he forces his way into the starting lineup on a consistent basis to prove to Moyes that he was worth the vast sum of money that was paid for him.

Defeating Villa won't be an easy task; however, West Ham have already beaten Chelsea and Brighton and Hove Albion this season, clearly demonstrating they can secure a positive result if required.

Kudus could be central to securing all three points and Moyes must unleash him in place of Antonio today.
