Tottenham Open Talks To Sign "Magnificent" £37k-p/w Colossus

Tottenham Hotspur have now opened talks to sign Fulham centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo, in what could potentially be a swap deal, with an out-of-favour player going in the opposite direction, according to a report.

Are Tottenham signing a defender?

In the final week of the summer transfer window, Spurs are still keen on making a number of additions to their squad, with 90min reporting they want to sign another defender, and they have several targets in mind, including Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba.

However, Football Insider report the German club's asking price of £50m is proving to be prohibitive, so Spurs have cooled their interest, and they could instead make a move for Torino defender Perr Schuurs, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Speaking on Last Word on Spurs (via The Boy Hotspur), Jacobs said:

"Perr Schuurs I think is still being discussed internally, and he could be a player at a little bit more value than some of the other names being discussed."

Adarabioyo has been a target for the Lilywhites for much of the summer, with it previously being reported he would be keen on a move to north London, however, there has been a great deal of competition for his signature, namely from AS Monaco.

Fulham boss Marco Silva has confirmed Monaco have already made an offer for the centre-back, but it was "not even close to the value of the player", so it was knocked back by the Cottagers, in what was an "easy" decision.

As such, the door could be open for the defender to move to north London this summer, and Tottenham have now opened talked with Fulham over a swap deal, with Eric Dier plus cash going in the opposite direction, according to a report from Football Insider.

Dier has been out of favour ever since Ange Postecoglou's arrival, so Spurs are now willing to part ways with him, in order to get a deal for the Fulham colossus over the line before the September 1st deadline.

The Cottagers may be forced to sell the Englishman this summer to avoid losing him for free in 2024, with his contract set to expire in less than a year's time.

How good is Tosin Adarabioyo?

Lauded as a "magnificent defender" by football writer Muhammad Butt, the 6 foot 5 colossus is adept at winning aerial duels, ranking in the 77th percentile for aerials won per 90 in the past year, while also placing in the 99th percentile for clearances.

Although he was a part of the Fulham team that was relegated in the 2020-21 season, the 25-year-old has since gone on to establish himself in the Premier League, making 25 top-flight appearances last season, and putting in some top performances to boot.

Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo

The £37k-per-week defender managed to catch the joint-third highest number of opponents offside of any Premier League player last season, indicating he is capable of playing a high line, which could make him a good fit in a Postecoglou system.

With Dier clearly not in Postecoglou's plans, it could make perfect sense to send the 29-year-old in the opposite direction, and it may well be a deal that suits all parties.

'Lost a lot of focus worrying about Tests' – Rohit

Having scored his third Test century in Nagpur, Rohit Sharma admitted he had been prone to putting too much pressure on himself early in his Test career, and was now far more relaxed

Karthik Krishnaswamy in Nagpur27-Nov-20171:14

They played some unnecessary shots – Rohit

At the VCA Stadium on February 6, 2010, Rohit Sharma injured his ankle during a practice session on the morning of what was to be his Test debut. Rohit himself had come into India’s squad as cover for the injured VVS Laxman. Now he too had been ruled out. He would have to wait until November 2013 to make his Test debut. Now, more than seven years after that injury, Rohit has reason to view the VCA Stadium, and Nagpur, with a bit of fondness. On Sunday, he scored his third Test hundred here, which contributed to India going 1-0 up against Sri Lanka with victory by an innings and 239 runs. This was Rohit’s first Test match since October 2016.”Personally for me, it [the hundred] was very important as I was playing Test cricket after nearly 500 days,” he said on Monday. “I have been waiting for this opportunity and I am glad that I could put some runs on the board for myself and the team. Really happy, it was worth waiting for so long.”I clearly remember this was the ground where I got injured and I had to wait three years to make my Test debut. This ground has now given me something to [make me want to] go back.”Rohit has made 68*, 2, 82, 51* and now 102* in his last five Test innings – that’s 305 runs at an average of 152.50. This run of scores has lifted his overall Test average above 40. But thanks to a spell of injury, the quality of India’s batting line-up, and their tendency to play five specialist bowlers, Rohit has not been a regular member of India’s Test line-up. He only played the Nagpur Test because India went in with six batsmen, and remains the likeliest batsman to miss out when India next decide to play an extra bowler or an allrounder. In this situation, Rohit said it was important to keep himself at peak preparedness whenever opportunities arrived.”When you get an opportunity you have to be more than ready, not just ready, to play the game and deliver the goods, what your captain and coach expect from you, and the team,” he said. “So when I was in Sri Lanka and before that, you never know that you’re going to be guaranteed your place in the XI. You’ve got to keep working at it, and try and figure out a way when you are in the middle, how you’re going to be destructive and make an impact on that particular game.”So my focus was purely on those particular aspects and we’ve got a good set of coaches to help us go through all that. It really depends on the captain and the coach what combination they want and what they’re comfortable with. Every member of the side understands that, and they are 100% and completely backing them to make the right decision, and whatever decision they make is in favour of the team.”In the last series that we played against Sri Lanka, we played with five bowlers. First game here we played with five, now we played with six [batsmen]. So you know, every now and then we’ll have this combination change – there will be six batsmen playing at times, there will be five bowlers playing at times – you never know. It depends completely on the captain, what he wants on that particular day, and against that particular opposition.”Rohit admitted that, in the past, he had been prone to putting too much pressure on himself to perform in Test cricket, and said he was now far more relaxed.”My plans are simple and clear,” he said. “I don’t want to complicate things, which I have [done] in the past at the earliest stage when I had just come into the team. I just thought too much about it and gave too much importance.”At the end of the day, it’s just a cricket match that you have to play, don’t worry about anything else. Initially, my focus was a lot on Test cricket – ‘Oh no, this is Test cricket, I have to do well, I have to do this and that.’ In thinking that I lost a lot of focus and forgot what I was there for and what I needed to do and [now I am] pretty clear in my mind, which is the most important thing.”Since his debut, Rohit has only played 22 of India’s 45 Tests, and spent a long time before that being part of the Test squad but not getting a game. He said it was pointless regretting any of that, and that he was happy to be playing, given the uncertainty that surrounded his career after he suffered that injury in Nagpur.”There will always be regrets in your life,” he said. “Even if you score 10,000 runs, you will feel, ‘Oh, I should have scored 15,000 runs’. Or people will tell you, ‘You should have scored 15,000 runs, man’. So that’s what it is. That’s what this world is and that’s what we’re living in.”But for me I’m glad that I’m back on my feet, because when I went through that injury, at one point I was thinking whether I’ll be able to walk or not, because injury was very bad. I’m lucky that I’m on my feet, playing and scoring some runs, so yes, I’m happy. I’m not someone who will think about what has happened in the past. I like to see what is in front of me, and yes, that is how I look at it. “When I was inexperienced, when I just came into the team there were lot of things that I used to think about, but not anymore. I’ve passed that age where I shouldn’t be thinking what happened in the past. I should be ready for what is coming next, because that’s what matters. What has happened in the past is gone – you can never change it. For me, I can change things looking forward, and looking forward is Delhi Test match and thereafter one-day series and then the South Africa series.”In that tour of South Africa, and the series of overseas tours that will follow it, India will depend heavily on their fast bowlers. Rohit said they had “evolved immensely” since their last cycle of tours in 2013-15, and that they knew their own game inside-out.”The last home season was a great eye opener for all the bowlers,” Rohit said. “Playing on slow pitches is never easy, I feel, and then to come out victorious and put on some match-winning performances was really pleasing to see. The last 13 matches we played in India, I think, there was a huge contribution from the bowling unit as well. That has given them confidence moving forward.”Now, when we go and play abroad, the confidence is there. All these guys, they have worked closely, and they have started to work on their technique and think more on their strategies and all. Like I said, in Test cricket, you have to get wickets, people don’t give you wickets. You have to plan for that and I think the focus of these bowlers has been more on that particular aspect – how to get a batsman out and what works for them and what doesn’t.”Sometimes there might be a session where you will find it tough but what do you do in that particular moment. It’s important to keep it tight, and keep that holding thing going on and create that pressure. So I think they have learned that in the last two years of Test-match cricket where they have played. When we went to South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and England before, these guys were a little inexperienced and now they have come of age. They exactly know their bowling which is the most important thing for any cricketer, to know their game.”

Starc and Hazlewood strike late as England waste hard work

It was as if this day was a microcosm of England’s batting throughout their whole disappointing Ashes tour as they let a promising position slip

Report by Brydon Coverdale04-Jan-20181:09

A familiar pattern for Stoneman and Vince

Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJoe Root fails to convert a fifty into a hundred. Check. Mark Stoneman makes a solid start that does not become an innings of note. Check. James Vince makes a start before throwing his wicket away. Check. Dawid Malan frustrates the Australians with a fighting innings. Check. It was as if this day was a microcosm of England’s batting throughout their whole disappointing tour. At stumps on the first day of the final Test in Sydney, England were 5 for 233, with Malan at the crease on 55.He was yet to be joined by Moeen Ali, for Jonny Bairstow had ended the day – or more accurately, the evening – by edging Josh Hazlewood behind for 5 from what became the final delivery. The second new ball had proven productive for Australia in the 10 deliveries they had with it. In the previous over, Root had clipped off his pads to Mitchell Marsh at square leg to give Mitchell Starc his first wicket of the match. With those two wickets, England’s upper hand disappeared. It was a disastrous finish for England, who had spent much of the day working themselves into a good position as they sought a consolation victory. Morning rain had delayed the toss and the start by 130 minutes, but Root still had no hesitation in choosing to bat. An early lunch meant play turned into a pair of three-hour sessions, and as 7pm approached, Root and Malan had compiled a partnership that was worth 133. Then came Root’s error. It is not quite fair to say this series has been the tale of two captains, yet the scoring chasm between Root and Steven Smith over the past four Tests has been difficult to ignore. Each has passed fifty on four occasions; Root’s highest score is the 83 he made today, while Smith has scored three hundreds, including one double-century. Late on the first day in Sydney, Root went past 50% of Smith’s series tally of 604 runs. That rather summed it up.The toss was one that Smith said he was not unhappy to lose, given the moisture in the surface and cloud overhead, as well as the return to the side of Starc, who had missed the Boxing Day Test due to a bruised heel. It took until the last 10 minutes of the day for Starc to make a breakthrough, but Pat Cummins struck two early blows by removing Stoneman and Vince, both of whom fell after making their way into the 20s.Stoneman pushed a shortish delivery and edged behind for a run-a-ball 24; it was a delivery he might have either left or played with a cross-bat, but the extra bounce made it hard to negotiate while playing straight. It continued a frustrating series for Stoneman, who only once has failed to reach double figures, but on no occasion has progressed past the fifties, with scores of 53, 27, 18, 36, 56, 3, 15 and now 24.Similarly, Vince has been unable to have a significant impact on the series at No.3, after impressing with 83 in the first innings of the campaign at the Gabba. Here, Vince toiled for 54 deliveries for his 25 before impatiently slashing at a short and wide delivery and edging behind off Cummins. Stoneman currently has 232 runs for the series at 29.00; Vince has 224 at 28.00, after scores of 83, 2, 2, 15, 25, 55, 17 and 25.Alastair Cook, fresh from his unbeaten 244 at the MCG, looked in a patient mood at the SCG until on 39 he was lbw to Hazlewood on review. The on-field umpire Joel Wilson had turned down Hazlewood’s appeal, but Australia’s review showed that by a slim margin the ball had pitched in line with the leg stump and was going on to hit. Those three wickets came in the opening three-hour session up until tea, before Root and Malan settled in for their stand.Malan had a few shaky moments. He was dropped at slip off Nathan Lyon on 34, and survived a couple of run-out attempts, but importantly he was still there at the end. Malan’s success has been one of the few highlights of England’s tour, and despite Cook’s unbeaten double-hundred in Melbourne, by stumps on day one in Sydney, Malan was their highest run-getter of the series, with only Smith and David Warner above him from either side. His 160-ball effort included five boundaries, and he must now bat with the lower order to push England to a competitive total. Root had looked the more fluent in their partnership, striking eight boundaries and reaching an 82-ball fifty, but his departure late in the day was a major blow for England. Root’s struggle to convert his half-centuries is becoming a concern – of his past 10 fifty-plus scores, only one – against West Indies in Birmingham – has been turned into triple-figures.Again, Root made a solid contribution for England, but again fell short of a match-defining one. How England bounce back from their late stumbles now looms as the big question.

Tottenham: How Tanguy Ndombele Can Still Leave Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of offloading midfielder Tanguy Ndombele haven't ended with the closure of this British summer transfer window.

Who has left Tottenham this summer?

Spurs and new manager Ange Postecoglou have sealed all of their major summer signings, but couldn't quite get another over the line after their deadline day capture of Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest.

Indeed, there were reports of the north Londoners chasing both Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly and Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher on Friday, but those moves ultimately failed to materialise.

That, and we're just speculating here, may have been down to Tottenham's inability to sell certain players – like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for instance – who apparently refuted a last gasp move to Fulham.

The likes of Davinson Sanchez and Ndombele also couldn't seal moves elsewhere, despite late interest, with Spurs instead offloading Harry Kane, Sergio Reguilon, Joe Rodon, Djed Spence, Harry Winks, Alfie Devine, Troy Parrott and Dane Scarlett on either permanent deals or loans.

Lucas Moura also left on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract on June 30, but while Spurs will be pleased to balance the books in certain areas, perhaps the most frustrating surplus player to remain is Ndombele.

Tanguy Ndombele for Napoli

On a reported £200,000-per-week, the Frenchman has spent the last two campaigns on various loan spells at Lyon and Napoli respectively.

He doesn't appear to be in Postecoglou's plans, either, with a last minute transfer to Genoa also failing to come to fruition for Ndombele.

Now that the British transfer window is shut, some supporters may believe they're stuck with the 26-year-old until January, but there may be some hope in the form of Galatasaray

Indeed, the Turkish Super Lig giants are apparently an option for Ndombele, and their transfer window actually doesn't close until September 15.

That is according to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, who shared an update on the midfielder's situation on X.

"Galatasaray remain an option for Tanguy Ndombele but it’s not time sensitive today," said Thomas on Friday night.

"Turkish window remains open to Sep 15. Wants to play for a Champions League team."

What's been said about Tanguy Ndombele?

tanguy-ndombele-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-hojbjerg-pochettino

You could argue that Ndombele's time at Spurs has been one to forget, having ultimately failed to live up to his once club-record price tag after signing from Lyon in 2019.

The former Ligue 1 sensation is now stuck in limbo at Tottenham and a move away could perhaps be best for all parties.

While Spurs haven't proved the ideal fit for Ndombele, there is certainly a good player there at his very best.

Arsenal star Declan Rice, commenting on the player last year, even said that he's one of his toughest ever opponents

“The perception of him, it shouldn’t be what it is because I tell you now, he is one of the toughest I have played against," said Rice.

“He is top. Just a street footballer on the pitch. He takes the ball anywhere, little flicks and tricks. Like he doesn’t care. He does everything so confidently.

"With players like that, you just have to let them play. Give them the freedom to go out and do whatever they want. When we played against Lyon in the Europa League, he was incredible. He’s a top player.”
