Tamim, Shakib demolish Sri Lanka

Bangladesh blasted their highest ODI score against Sri Lanka and then defended it in some style to go 1-0 up in the three-match series

The Report by Mohammad Isam25-Mar-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsTamim Iqbal nearly batted through the innings in constructing his eighth ODI century•AFP

Bangladesh carried forward the momentum from their historic win in their 100th Test by making a rousing start to the three-match ODI series in Dambulla. Tamim Iqbal, with his eighth hundred, and Shakib Al Hasan fashioned their formidable score of 324 for 5 before a combined effort from the bowlers and fielders shut Sri Lanka out for 234 in 45.1 overs. This was the first time Bangladesh had posted a 300-plus total away from home against a higher-ranked team, one that helped them cruise towards a win for most parts. Thisara Perera, coming in at No. 8, decided to upset them temporarily with a fifty off just 28 balls just when victory looked a foregone conclusion for the visitors. But the escalating asking rate resulted in big shots from the other batsmen, which eventually led to their downfall.Bangladesh broke down their strategy into fine segments to not allow Sri Lanka even a whiff of an opportunity; not even when Dinesh Chandimal fought through to make a half-century and try set up a late surge. They needed someone, like Tamim, to bat through the innings, but kept losing wickets on the face of some disciplined bowling. The stranglehold was well and truly on 15 overs into the chase. That Bangladesh could apply scorecard pressure was thanks to the 144-run stand between Tamim, the match’s top-scorer with 127, and Shakib, who made a fire-and-ice 71-ball 72. Sabbir Rahman’s half-century was equally important as it helped drive Bangladesh after the early loss of Soumya Sarkar. He struck 10 fours before Upul Tharanga intercepted his powerful drive off Asela Gunaratne, in the 22nd over, to give Sri Lanka a reprieve. They had another strike when Mushfiqur Rahim was caught and bowled by Lakshan Sandakan in the next over. But Tamim and Shakib batted sensibly by only hitting boundaries when they were absolutely sure. During the course of his innings, Tamim became the first Bangladeshi to cross 10,000 international runs. For a long time, Sri Lanka saw these two experienced batsmen restraining themselves until the last 10 overs. Of course poor fielding didn’t help their cause. After their dismissals, Mosaddek Hossain and Mahmudullah hammered 35 off 2.1 overs to finish with a flourish. Sri Lanka were further compounded by an injury to Suranga Lakmal right at the end which meant he couldn’t complete his full quota.Momentum remained with Bangladesh as Mashrafe Mortaza removed Danushka Gunathilaka off the third ball of the chase. Kusal Mendis fell to a miscued slog in the sixth over before Taskin Ahmed had Tharanga toe-end a pull to mid-on in the 11th over. Chandimal and Asela Gunaratne added 54 for the fourth wicket before the latter reverse swept a low catch to Mosaddek at point. By then, the asking rate had mounted over seven an over.Chandimal reached his fifty off 62 balls and looked like the only batsman who comprehended the need of the hour. But in an attempt to up the run-rate, he top edged a sweep to Soumya at short fine-leg after making 59. It was the second wicket for debutant Mehedi Hasan, who had earlier picked up Mendis. Soon after the required run-rate crossed the 10-mark, Milinda Siriwardana struck Mustafizur for a straight six, the first of Sri Lanka’s innings, but fell off the next delivery to a diving effort by Shuvagata Hom, substituting for Tamim, at deep square leg for 22.Mashrafe, returning to his second spell, had a wicket off the first ball when Sachith Pathirana skied one to Mahmudullah at mid-off for 31. With Sri Lanka on 171 for 7, the game was all but over. Thisara though decided to play the way he knows and struck a belligerent half-century, his first in over two years, to keep Bangladesh on their toes. But on the night, Bangladesh’s bowlers and fielders were too sharp for Sri Lanka.

Tottenham Could Ditch Davies For "Complete" £34m Sensation

As new boss Ange Postecoglou prepared to walk in the door at Tottenham Hotspur last month, rumours were rife that the 47-year-old was planning to oversee something of a mass exodus at N17 ahead of next season.

Just a few weeks into the Greek-Aussie's tenure and it already looks as if that prophecy is coming true, with recent reports notably suggesting that the ex-Celtic boss is willing to allow Pierre-Emile Hojberg to depart, despite the experienced Dane having missed just a handful of Premier League games over the last three seasons.

Such ruthlessness could also see Ivan Perisic move on for pastures new in the near future, while long-serving goalkeeper Hugo Lloris also appears destined for an exit, particularly following the signing of Empoli's Guglielmo Vicario.

One man whom Postecoglou should also consider moving on is Wales international, Ben Davies, with reports prior to the new manager's arrival having suggested that the north Londoners were open to offers for the 30-year-old.

The former Swansea City man formed part of a defence that shipped 63 league goals last term, with pundit Gabby Agbonlahor suggesting that the versatile defender has been "struggling to put in top performances" of late, with Spurs in need of a "real shuffle" in the backline.

The £80k-per-week man's exit could then be hastened if the Premier League outfit are to get their hands on long-time target, Piero Hincapie, with reports in Portugal naming Tottenham as one of the clubs who are interested in the Bayer Leverkusen man, with a fee of around €40m (£34m) having been mooted.

Who is Piero Hincapie?

The 27-cap Ecuadorian international was notably linked with a £20m move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in January, while journalist Christian Falk said at the time that the club had been keeping an "eye" on the young sensation since the previous summer.

Much like Davies, the promising left-footer is comfortable lining up at centre-back or in a left-back berth, ensuring he could represent an adaptable and flexible option for Postecoglou next term to help bolster his defensive unit.

Tottenham's Ben Davies

Lauded as "elegant", "complete" and "dominant" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Hincapie enjoyed a solid season in the Bundesliga last time out, showcasing his defensive strength after averaging 2.7 tackles and interceptions per game from his 30 league outings, with that a far better record than what the current Spurs man achieved from his 31 league appearances (1.5 tackles and interceptions per game).

That ball-winning brilliance is also illustrated by the fact that Hincapie ranks in the top 10% among those in his position for tackles made in Europe's top five leagues, while Davies ranks in just the bottom 26% for that same metric, as per FBref.

In comparison to other centre-backs across the continent, the duo are both alike due to their ability to bring the ball out from the back, albeit with the Leverkusen ace just about edging it as he ranks in the top 3% for progressive carries, with Davies ranking in the top 6% in that regard.

Equally, while Hincapie has made over 100 appearances at senior level throughout his career to date, he is still a relatively young prospect, ensuring he could represent a figure who can thrive in English football over the next decade or so.

With Davies having already had a nine-year run in north London, perhaps it is time for the ageing asset to be on his way, in order to help welcome in a player of truly exciting potential.

Malik's hundred carries Pakistan to series victory

A 113-run partnership between Pakistan veterans Shoaib Malik – who scored his ninth ODI century with a six to seal victory – and Mohammad Hafeez saw Pakistan canter to a six-wicket win and clinch the three-match series 2-1

The Report by Danyal Rasool11-Apr-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsShoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez put on a century stand to set up victory•AFP

A commanding performance to secure a vice-like grip on eighth place doesn’t sound like an especially formidable achievement, but it was a much-needed boost off the back of a troubling few months for Pakistan cricket. A 113-run partnership between veterans Shoaib Malik – who reached his ninth ODI century with the six to seal victory – and Mohammad Hafeez enabled Pakistan to canter to a six-wicket win and clinch the three-match series 2-1.Pakistan’s chase of 234 got off to an eventful start, with a first-ball wicket, a nasty collision between Ahmed Shehzad and Babar Azam, a dropped catch at mid-on and a brilliant grab by wicketkeeper Shai Hope all crammed into a lively first six overs. Babar edged Shannon Gabriel into his stumps less than three overs later, and the upshot from a frenetic opening Powerplay was Pakistan had lost three wickets for 45 and, for the umpteenth time, were looking wobbly. The one positive Pakistan could glean from the situation was that Hafeez and Malik were at the crease together, and with 430 ODIs between them, they represented vast experience, if nothing else. It showed, too, with the pair ensuring they made survival their main priority for the next hour or so amid some testing spin bowling by Devendra Bishoo and Ashley Nurse, and they slowly began to turn the game in Pakistan’s favour.By the time Hafeez holed out to deep square leg, the visitors needed less than 100 to win. Skipper Sarfraz Ahmed then joined Malik at the crease, the pair picking off the poor deliveries with consummate ease in a stroll towards their target. Towards the end, Malik was playing with such ease that he gave himself the chance of a century, which he completed in style with a straight six off Jason Holder. It might not always have been smooth sailing, but in the end, it was unquestionably clinical.West Indies will rue a failure to take proper advantage of the review system for the second game running. When Hafeez was on 39, Nurse, arguably the most consistent performer for his side all series, spun one sharply back into him, the ball striking the top of his front pad. Hawk-Eye showed it would have been given out on review, but Holder decided against going to the third umpire. It was one among a series of errors West Indies committed in the field – dropped catches playing a starring role once again – and by the time Hafeez was finally dismissed, the telling blows had long since been struck.West Indies had managed to scrap to 233 despite being squeezed for runs during much of the first half of their innings. Having slipped to 68 for 3 with a run rate well under four, Hope and Jason Mohammed combined for a 101-run partnership – the first three-figure partnership for West Indies this year – to set their team on course for what was at least a competitive total. The heart of West Indies’ innings was stifled by a sustained spell of pressure from Pakistan’s spinners, a spell that, in hindsight proved decisive. Imad Wasim was the pick of the bowlers, bolstering his credentials as a genuine ODI allrounder following on from his impressive batting performance in the previous match. He was the major reason for West Indies’ sluggishness during the middle overs, consistently bowling on a good line and getting the ball to spin away from the right-handers. Hafeez provided him able support, and their combined bowling figures of 17-1-45-1 aptly told the story of the middle overs. But even when their run rate slipped to as low as 3.34 runs per over, West Indies had one metric in their favour: seven wickets in hand. Inch by inch, Mohammed and Hope began to climb their way back into the contest, Mohammed launching Hasan Ali for sixes in consecutive overs and setting his team up for the final push. However, just as the hosts looked like they were eyeing 250, Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan took over from Shadab Khan, who had an indifferent day with the ball – despite picking up the wickets of Hope and Jonathan Carter – conceding 57 runs in his eight overs. The quality of Pakistan’s quicks shone through with a splendid bowling performance during the death overs, the two left-armers regularly landing yorkers with surgical precision that the batsmen struggled to get underneath. Only 29 runs came off the last five overs as the momentum West Indies had threatened to build up was punctured severely. Runs in short supply was a familiar theme for the hosts all evening, culminating in a result they – and their fans – have become all too familiar with of late.

Liverpool Eyeing Up Swoop For Ice Cold £35m Titan

An update has emerged on Liverpool's search for new midfielders to bolster their playing squad before the end of the summer transfer window…

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

According to FootballTransfers, the Reds are considering a swoop to sign Bayern Munich titan Leon Goretzka ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The report claims that the German international is one of the 'prime' candidates to fill out Jurgen Klopp's squad as speculation swirls over Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and Thiago Alcantara's respective futures at the club.

It states that the Bundesliga giants want to overhaul their squad over the coming weeks and, for that reason, they are open to cashing in on the central midfielder for a fee in the region of €40m (£35m).

He would be the third new addition of the summer for Liverpool after they snapped up Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to improve their options in midfield.

How old is Leon Goretzka?

The Bayern machine is in what should be the prime years of his career at the age of 28 and would, therefore, arrive at Anfield as a player who is ready to make an instant impact.

He is not a young player with plenty of development still to come or an experienced veteran whose powers are waning, which could allow him to hit the ground running.

Goretzka has proven himself to be a combative midfielder who can also provide a significant goal threat and that could make him perfect for Szoboszlai next season.

Former Leipzig wizard Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Hungary international, who recently signed from RB Leipzig, could provide the towering German with the opportunities he needs to find the back of the net as his time in the Bundesliga suggests that he is a creative magician.

Szoboszlai registered 2.3 key passes per match for his former club last season, which resulted in 14 'big chances' being created for his teammates. Meanwhile, no Liverpool player managed more than Trent Alexander-Arnold's 1.9 key passes per Premier League game.

This suggests that the 22-year-old wizard could be Klopp's outstanding creative presence in midfield next season, due to his impressive ability to unlock opposition defences on a regular basis.

Goretzka, who has scored 34 goals in 179 matches for Bayern, ranks within the top 1% of his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions over the last 365 days for non-penalty expected goals (xG) accumulated per 90.

This essentially means that the 28-year-old talent excels at finding himself in high-quality positions to find the back of the net, which indicates that he would be perfect for Szoboszlai.

The German international, who teammate Manuel Neuer hailed as "cold as ice", is a goalscoring midfielder who could benefit from his potentially new teammate's superb creativity to provide a significant goal threat from midfield.

His physicality in that position could also allow Szoboszlai to go about his business without worrying about that side of the game. The 6 foot 2 monster won 58% of his Bundesliga duels, including 67% of his aerial battles, last season, whilst the Hungarian star lost 72% of his contests in the air.

Therefore, Goretzka would perfectly complement the former Leipzig maestro in and out of possession as the £35m-rated colossus has the quality to provide the exciting youngster with a target to find within the box in attack whilst also being able to cover for him defensively with immense aerial ability.

Steyn out of England Tests; targets home season return

Dale Steyn will miss South Africa’s tour of England, which starts next week and ends in August, as he continues to recover from a shoulder surgery

Dale Steyn will miss South Africa’s tour of England, which starts next week and ends in August, as he continues to recover from a shoulder surgery. Steyn, who has been out of action since the Perth Test against Australia last November with a broken bone, was due to play in two four-day games for the South Africa A side in the UK, to put himself in line for Test selection. However, considering he is still undergoing rehabilitation, he has opted to withdraw from those matches.”My recovery is going well but it is taking a little longer than I expected it to,” Steyn said at the CSA Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday. “I am able to do a lot of things, like running, hiking and gym work, but bowling is not one of them, and I won’t be ready in time.”When Steyn was initially diagnosed, it was expected he would need at least six months on the sidelines, which could have put him in contention for the UK tour. Instead, he is now targeting the home series against Bangladesh in September-October to make an international comeback, but understands he will need game time before that if he is to make the squad.”Obviously, one of the reasons for me playing with the A side was so that I could get some match fitness before the Tests. So, before that Bangladesh series, I will need to play a bit,” Steyn said.South Africa A will play in a limited-overs tournament against India A and Australia A late in the winter, which could give Steyn his much-needed game time, but he has also not ruled out the possibility of a short county stint in order to get some overs in. “In a way it could be quite funny – South Africa will be playing a Test series in England and maybe at some ground down the road, Dale Steyn will be playing for another team,” he joked.Steyn could not put a timeline on when he will return to bowling but stated that he was not experiencing any pain in the shoulder when “doing normal things.” He is on an extensive rehabilitation program which runs five days a week and includes activities to strengthen the smaller muscles around the shoulder joint. His plan is to gradually work his way up to being able to return to bowling.”We have to understand that fast bowling is not something normal people do, so it’s going to take time. Normal people do things mostly below the shoulder line; it’s unusual to have something above the line except for things like bowling and tennis. I just have to be patient,” Steyn said.Despite Steyn’s absence, South Africa will still have what he considers a “very strong attack,” which will include the fit-again Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada, Duanne Olivier and, possibly, Chris Morris or Wayne Parnell – or both, as they had in New Zealand. Philander is the only other injury concern – he sustained a groin injury while playing for Sussex earlier this month – but South Africa are hopeful he will be able to play a full part in the Test series.

'Drastic steps may jeopardise ICC negotiations'

The Committee of Administrators has said it will intervene if it feels the BCCI’s decision at the upcoming SGM hurts the interests of Indian cricket

Nagraj Gollapudi03-May-2017

ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The committee of administrators (CoA) appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee the BCCI will not hesitate to intervene if it feels that decisions taken by the board at this weekend’s special general meeting are going to hurt the interests of Indian cricket. In an email to state associations ahead of the SGM on May 7, the CoA issued a thinly veiled warning that it would take the matter to the Supreme Court if BCCI took a “drastic step/measure,” which could “jeopardise” ongoing negotiations with the ICC.The BCCI called the SGM to update state associations on the outcomes of the April round of ICC Board meetings – the second SGM called by the BCCI in less than a month. At the previous one on April 18, the BCCI had authorised its acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary to ask the ICC Board to defer any decision on the new constitution, governance structure and the new finance model. Choudhary did so and also argued that the BCCI should get $570 million as its share from ICC tournaments in the 2015-23 right cycle. His request was rejected, though, and the BCCI was outvoted as the ICC passed the new constitution and finance model. The BCCI now stands to get $293 million as its share (the amount is based on the ICC earning a projected revenue of $2.7 billion). Some BCCI office bearers and state associations now want to take an aggressive stance and have threatened to revoke the Members Partnership Agreement (MPA) signed by the Indian board and ICC in 2014. A dozen state associations including two BCCI office-bearers – Choudhary and board treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry – wanted to send the ICC a legal notice challenging the decisions taken last week, a move thwarted by the CoA.If the BCCI was to revoke the MPA, then India will pull out of the Champions Trophy, which starts on June 1 in England. Pre-empting such a decision, the CoA sought a more collaborative approach.”It is in the interests of Indian cricket for the BCCI to continue negotiations with the ICC and other cricket boards to arrive at an amount/ share that is somewhere between that envisaged under the financial model that was put in place in 2014 and that which is envisaged under the revised financial model,” the CoA said in an email to the state associations on Wednesday.Being aggressive, the CoA said, would only harm the BCCI’s cause. “It is not in the interests of Indian cricket for the BCCI to take any drastic step/measure which may result in breakdown of negotiations between the BCCI, ICC and other cricket boards, especially since there is sufficient time between now and the ICC Conference to be held in June 2017 for a negotiated outcome to be arrived at.”The CoA would, the email said, support any decision taken by the BCCI as long as it was unanimous and protected the interests of Indian cricket.”In the extremely unlikely event that the decision of the Members of BCCI at the SGM is one which, in our view, is against the interests of Indian cricket, we would be duty bound to bring such decision to the attention of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, communicate our views to the Hon’ble Supreme Court and seek its intervention in the matter as also to take such other steps that we consider necessary to protect the interests of Indian cricket.”In an attempt to make the state associations understand the gravity of the situation, the CoA laid out the sequence of events leading to last week’s ICC Board meeting. In its discussions with ICC chairman Shashank Manohar and various member board representatives, the CoA was told about the vast “trust deficit” that had developed between them and the BCCI after the Big Three became a reality in early 2014. While acknowledging that the BCCI contributed “much more” to the ICC, member boards said their share in the Big Three model was “too high and unacceptable”.Instead, an acceptable figure lay somewhere between the Big Three model and the ICC’s revised finance model. The ICC’s members were keen to sort out the issue through negotiations rather than a vote, and the CoA told Choudhary that a “lack of flexibility” at the ICC Board meetings would not serve the BCCI well.”The decision regarding what amount/share and changes to the ICC governance structure the BCCI should finally agree to in the course of negotiations with the ICC and other cricket boards is certainly one that needs to be taken by the General Body of the BCCI as it has long term implications,” the CoA said.”It is extremely unlikely that the ICC and other cricket boards will agree to the amount/ share envisaged under the financial model that was put in place in 2014. The ICC and other cricket boards will certainly agree to an amount/ share that is higher than what is envisaged under the revised financial model.”The CoA also warned that if the talks failed it could have a negative impact on the observations made by the BCCI – through its CEO Rahul Johri – on the new governance structure, which was also approved by the ICC Board. Johri had expressed reservations on the scheduling of bilateral tours, membership criteria, the powers of the ICC chairman, and the composition of committees in an email to the ICC in March.
