In Focus: Tottenham’s chances of signing Malcom appear to be slipping away

According to reports in The Sun, German giants Borussia Dortmund have stolen a march on Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign £50m-rated Brodeaux winger Malcom this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun says that Dortmund have launched an official bid to rival Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich for the highly-rated 21-year-old, with Spurs falling back in the race having signed Lucas Moura from Paris Saint-Germain last month after failing to bring his Brazilian compatriot to north London.

The Sun says that Mauricio Pochettino was ready to make another attempt to get Malcom at the end of the season, but Dortmund may well be the frontrunners for his signature as they look to finally replace Ousmane Dembele following his move to Barcelona next summer.

How has Malcom done this season?

He has been outstanding.

The 21-year-old has scored eight goals in 25 Ligue 1 appearances for Bordeaux, providing a further six assists.

The Brazilian has become renowned for scoring special goals, with a number of his strikes coming when he has cut in from the right and unleashed a long-range effort with his left foot.

He loves to dribble – he has successfully completed 67 of the 96 he has attempted in those 25 games this term according to WhoScored.com – while the same statistics-based website says he has also made an impressive 59 key passes to show the creative ability he has in his locker.

Would he be a good signing for Tottenham?

He certainly would be.

Malcom has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young players in European football, and he is likely to have plenty of interest in his services from a number of big clubs this summer.

With Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich keen and with the club already signing Lucas Moura and continuing to be linked with Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon, you do have to wonder if a deal for the talented 21-year-old is slipping away from the north London outfit.

United fans are hoping Pogba is fit to face Sevilla

Paul Pogba was ruled out of Manchester United’s crunch clash with Liverpool on Saturday at the eleventh hour.

The French international suffered a gash to his leg in the closing stages of the training session that directly preceded United’s 2-1 victory over their fiercest rivals, secured by two Marcus Rashford goals.

He had performed poorly in the previous match, as United laboured to a 3-2 win over struggling Crystal Palace. The whole team was poor for the first hour but Pogba was particularly bad throughout even as his team-mates rallied to secure all three points.

In actuality, you make the argument that United actually performed better in Pogba’s absence. Jose Mourinho conjured a cohesive, disciplined and vibrant performance from his side and the feeling persists that it would not have been possible – or at least as successful – if he had been forced to try and fit Pogba in.

Despite that, United fans greeted the news that Pogba had undertaken a brief amount of training ahead of the crunch second leg of the Champions League last 16 tie with Sevilla at Old Trafford cheerily.

Many Red Devils fans are clearly of the opinion that Pogba’s natural talent puts him head and shoulders ahead of their club’s other midfield options. We’ve taken a look at the best of their Twitter reactions…

Man United fans reminisce about Manchester derby victory

Manchester United will likely head to the Etihad Stadium on 7 April knowing that they must win to avoid the embarrassment of their local rivals winning the title against them on that day.

It has been a season where the blue side of Manchester has been the dominant one and that could well be confirmed in galling style as City have the rare opportunity to win the Premier League by beating their fierce rivals.

That is not a prospect that United fans want to think about and the club recognised this by sharing footage of the 2016 derby at the Etihad, which was won 1-0 by a first-half goal from Marcus Rashford, now valued at £45m by Transfermarkt.

There is a feeling of doom and gloom around United right now and you’d be hard pushed to find many Reds fans who truly believe their club can overcome City next month.

Therefore, the positivity came out in remembering that win at the home of their city rivals and we’ve taken a closer look at the one thing United fans noted in particular…

Everton should reject Crystal Palace’s Lookman interest

Crystal Palace have designs on signing Everton starlet Ademola Lookman in the event that talisman Wilfried Zaha is lured away in the summer, as per the Sun.

Despite that, and his disagreement with Sam Allardyce in January, the Toffees must do all they can to keep the former Charlton man at Goodison Park.

What’s the story?

It is widely thought that Zaha is the best player in the bottom half and Tottenham are reportedly among the clubs who are looking to add the Ivorian winger to their squad in the summer.

Palace have reportedly started making plans in the event that the wideman does depart Selhurst Park during the next transfer window and Lookman is at the top of their list of potential replacements.

Lookman is currently on loan in Germany with RB Leipzig, but Allardyce would apparently have preferred for him to stay in England.

Lookman should outlast Allardyce at Goodison

It has been a long season at Goodison Park but the arrival of Sam Allardyce, and the upturn in form that actually put the Toffees in 9th before he joined the club, should be enough to ensure their Premier League safety.

Everton fans have already lost patience with Allardyce and his mistrust of flair players and cynical disregard for building anything tangible in the long-term are two major reasons why.

The Toffees have lacked pace and invention this season but Lookman – valued at £6.2m by Transfermarkt – is one of few players on the books who can provide it.

Another expensive summer overhaul looks likely, so Everton cannot afford to be selling promising talents to teams lower down the league than them; especially not ones who possess qualities they so obviously lack.

More money will no doubt be spent at Goodison this summer but Lookman, Tom Davies and Dominic Calvert-Lewin should be at the heart of any turnaround at the club – they represent a brighter future.

Hart in, Hernandez out: West Ham fans rage at Moyes’ team selection

David Moyes may view West Ham’s trip to face Stamford Bridge in Sunday’s London derby as something of a free hit.

There was much more pressure on the Hammers last weekend, their biggest game of the season as they hosted relegation rivals Southampton.

Moyes’ men flew out of the blocks, establishing a 3-0 lead by half-time and making a mockery of the pressure that had been bubbling up for three week break since their last match, the home defeat to Burnley by the same scoreline.

That alleviated some of the relegation tension that had engulfed the club and should allow the Irons to make the trip from West to East London with designs on exploiting any lack of confidence in the Chelsea ranks following their 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Tottenham last time out.

Joe Hart got the nod but Javier Hernandez was not so fortunate and we’ve taken a closer look at the best of the West Ham fans’ reaction…

Aston Villa fans were in awe of Sam Johnstone on Tuesday night

Aston Villa bounced back from defeat to secure an important result at home to Cardiff City on Tuesday night, winning 1-0 thanks to a stunning late volley from midfielder Jack Grealish.

With the game deadlocked at 0-0, the ball popped up to Grealish 20 yards out, who promptly banged it in off the post with a goal of the season contender.

Despite that strike undoubtedly stealing all the headlines, it was another performer on the night that Villa fans were quick to pay tribute to – goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Many felt he was the man of the match for a string of impressive saves across the 90 minutes that kept the Villans in the game before Grealish’s beauty.

He’s been one of the best performers in Steve Bruce’s side this season and fans must be desperate for the club to attempt to make his loan move from Manchester United permanent in the summer.

Everton fans love Pickford’s Newcastle taunts

Everton fans have found another reason to fall in love with Jordan Pickford, after their new star taunted Newcastle fans after Monday’s win.

If there’s one thing football fans love more than winning, it’s winning and rubbing it in the other team’s faces.

Jordan Pickford did just that on Monday night, as the ex-Sunderland man enjoyed getting one over on his former rival.

The 24 year-old moved to Goodison for a big fee last summer, and has been the sole success story of the Toffees’ summer spending spree.

Newcastle fans understandably gave their former nemesis a fair bit of stick on Monday night, booing and taunting the youngster every time he touched the ball.

Needless to say, Pickford had the last laugh, as Everton not only won but kept a clean sheet.

HYS: Should West Ham make a summer move for Leicester’s Albrighton?

The same season that Leicester City stunned the world of football by winning the Premier League, West Ham United departed Upton Park for the Olympic Stadium.

The Hammers and their fans were surely not demanding that their side smash the glass ceiling as emphatically as The Foxes did in 2015/16, but the promise of better days ahead was the only thing that made leaving their old stomping ground feel palatable.

Fast forward two seasons and it hasn’t quite worked out that way. Provided they remain in the Premier League this season, West Ham will not be looking at a brave new era in a pristine ground that attracts elite talent.

Rather, they face the prospect of David Moyes looking to build a mid-table side in their third season at the London Stadium. Still, one man who would provide the team with energy is Leicester’s Marc Albrighton.

That’s why we’re asking you; even though West Ham have not enjoyed Leicester’s rise, would it be a good move to snare the uncapped Englishman, who is valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt?

Let us know by voting in the poll below and keep your eyes peeled for the result…

Fans react as Huddersfield hold champions City to a draw

A hard-fought point for Huddersfield against Manchester City edged them three points clear of the relegation zone on Sunday.

The game was a dead rubber from a City perspective as they had already secured the title in April.

However, Huddersfield need every point they can get to stay in the league and this result could prove vital in their bid for Premier League survival.

City’s title celebration continued after the game, but Pep Guardiola will be disappointed his team could not take three points from their penultimate home game of the season.

As they have done for most of the season, City dominated possession but could not break down a strong and stoic Huddersfield defence.

David Wagner set his team up to stop the City attackers with a high pressing game, like the tactics Liverpool manager Jurgan Klopp used against City this year.

City host Brighton in their final home game of the season before finishing the season against Southampton.

West Ham would be making mistake if they sold Michail Antonio to Crystal Palace

According to reports in The Sun, West Ham United winger Michail Antonio, rated at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, is a summer target for Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun says that Eagles boss Roy Hodgson has identified the England international as one of his top targets after they preserved their Premier League status for at least another year following their 2-1 win against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.

The Sun says that Hodgson sees the 28-year-old as the missing piece in his jigsaw, and says that the attacker could be tempted to move to Selhurst Park following their impressive revival this season having lost their opening seven matches of the campaign.

The report adds that while Antonio signed a new contract last year when Slaven Bilic was still in charge of the Irons, it remains to be seen whether he has a future under David Moyes.

How has Antonio done this season?

The versatile player, who has played as a winger, centre-forward, wing-back and full-back – on both sides of the pitch – for West Ham, came into the campaign as one of their biggest goal threats following a fruitful season last time out.

However, he has been injury-hit and has failed to hit any real form, meaning he has scored just three goals in 21 Premier League appearances, providing one assist.

The 28-year-old, who has been tipped to bounce back from his latest injury issue by Irons fans on Twitter, is direct and loves to use his pace and strength to run at defenders, and he would certainly be a good fit on paper for Palace in those terms.

Should West Ham sell him this summer?

While Antonio hasn’t enjoyed a particularly successful season, he has shown in the past that he can be one of their most useful attacking outlets, and they need to keep hold of him for that reason.

Yes, the niggling injuries he seems to keep picking up are frustrating, but the winger still has three years remaining on his contract at the London Stadium, and he still has plenty to give.

The fact that Moyes plays with wing-backs certainly hasn’t helped the 28-year-old given defending isn’t his strong point, yet he always puts in plenty of effort wherever he is asked to play – West Ham need players like him when the going gets tough.
