Arsenal: Takehiro Tomiyasu injury a ‘big blow’

Journalist Paul Brown says that Arsenal losing Takehiro Tomiyasu for the rest of the season through injury is a ‘big blow’.

The Lowdown: Serious injury

As shared by the official website of the Emirates Stadium outfit, Tomiyasu has sustained a significant injury to his right knee that forced him to come off early in their 1-1 draw at home to Sporting in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League last-16 tie.

The right-back had to have surgery in London earlier this week, but has now been ruled out for the rest of the season,

The Latest: ‘Big blow’

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Brown says that losing Tomiyasu for the rest of the campaign is a ‘big blow’ given his versatility and how much of a consistent performer that he is:

“I think that’s quite a big blow. Tomiyasu is an important member of the squad, partly because he can play in more than one position.

“His flexibility when he plays in either makes him an interesting option for Arteta.

“I think he’s very reliable, and he always puts a shift in. You can depend on him, but not having him around clearly weakens them.”

The Verdict: Not ideal

Losing Tomiyasu is certainly not ideal for Mikel Arteta, especially considering that they have another defensive injury to worry about in William Saliba, who was also forced off against Sporting and subsequently did not play in their 4-1 win against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Japan international is equally as comfortable as a left-back or central defender as well as at right-back, and so his extra versatility has been of use to Arteta throughout a season when there have been other injuries in the squad, as he has made 31 appearances in total for the Gunners over all competitions.

Tomiyasu ranks highly among his team-mates in the top flight for average tackles, interceptions and clearances per game, as his defensive qualities from full-back allow the likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli more freedom in the final third, so there is no doubt that his absence could be huge for the North Londoners as they look to chase down the Premier League title.

Liverpool: Klopp Should Sign "outstanding" £60m Gem Over Mount

Liverpool are interested in a swoop for precocious Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz, in a move which could spell the end of Jurgen Klopp's interest in Chelsea star Mason Mount.

What's the latest on Florian Wirtz to Liverpool?

According to renowned transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are interested in signing Wirtz, the transfer guru dubbing him "one of the best talents in the world" and will look to instigate a move, with the 19-year-old maestro valued at a minimum £60m.

European giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are also reported to have a vested interest in the attacking midfielder, while his German Bundesliga outfit are said to be "convinced" that he will remain at the club until 2024.

Contracted until 2027, there is scant possibility of a lucrative price tag being whittled down, and if the Reds wish to capture the German gem, the bank will indeed require breaking.

Should Liverpool sign Wirtz over Mount?

Liverpool have fallen by the wayside this season and are facing an onerous effort in preserving even Champions League status next year, having reached three finals, winning one, since last plying their trade outside Europe's premium continental competition.

So much has gone wrong this season, but the midfield requires glaring reinforcement, to be prioritised above all else; it is perhaps telling that 18-year-old starlet Stefan Bajcetic has been the most heralded figure on Anfield this term, hailed as "so composed and mature for his age" by journalist Ben Bocsak.

Bajcetic is indeed an "incredible prospect" – in the words of Tom Barnes – but Wirtz would be an upgrade of a wholly different nature, with the prodigy having already scored 21 goals and supplied 28 assists from his first 91 professional appearances for Die Werkself.

Having torn his knee ligaments last March, ending a remarkable personal campaign that saw him clinch ten goals and 14 assists from 31 outings across all competitions, Wirtz returned to action roughly ten weeks ago, registering eight direct contributions from 13 appearances since his comeback.

Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz scores against Celtic in the Europa League

The dynamic midfielder ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues for assists, the top 1% for successful take-ons and the top 3% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, highlighting the impact he would have on instilling life and vibrancy into the fold in Liverpool.

Fellow Liverpool target Mount, listed as a comparable player to the four-cap German, himself ranks among the top 7% of positional peers for progressive passes but fails to catch the eye across a multitude of further metrics including successful take-ons and assists, where he ranks among the top 31% and bottom 17% respectively.

With the England ace holding a reported £50m price tag, shifting focus on Wirtz might be the more prudent avenue for Klopp and co to delve down, especially given Mount's fall from grace this season.

Hailed as "outstanding" by Germany boss Hansi Flick, Wirtz will likely earn a prominent transfer to a European giant at some point over the next few years, and Liverpool must throw the kitchen sink at securing a deal and cementing their future.

Leeds United Could Ditch Bamford For "Classic Centre-Forward"

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Italy sensation Mateo Retegui this summer and his potential arrival at Elland Road could see Patrick Bamford finally leave.

Could Leeds sign Mateo Retegui?

According to Italian news outlet Area Napoli, Leeds are one of the sides showing an interest in the 23-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window but could face competition from both Milan clubs and Eintracht Frankfurt for his signature.

The Argentine-born striker, who qualifies for Italy through his maternal grandfather, has enjoyed an impressive campaign at club level, contributing seven goals in just nine league appearances for Tigre, having joined them on loan from Boca Juniors for the season.

This has led to him earning a strong 7.11 rating from WhoScored for his performances in Argentina's top flight, while he has a 7.07 rating in the European Championship after scoring in both of Italy's games in the recent international break, including once in the 2-1 defeat against England.

The forward also spent the 2022 season on loan with Tigre, crashing in 23 goals in 42 appearances in all competitions, so it is easy to see why he earned the call-up to Roberto Mancini's side recently, which has clearly attracted the interest of clubs across Europe.

2006 World Cup-winning manager Marcelo Lippi was full of praise for the Boca Juniors star on Super Deportivo Radio after his performances during the international break, outlining attributes that should come as music to the ears of everyone associated with Leeds.

He said (via FC Inter News): "He’s the classic centre-forward who scores. He has a strong header. I like how he plays in the box, that’s why I think he’s a good striker.”

It does seem that Retegui's future lies away from Argentina and if Leeds do sign him this summer, it would surely see one of the strikers at Elland Road leave, with Bamford a prime candidate given he has just two goals in the Premier League so far this term.

How has Bamford played this season?

This campaign has been an extremely underwhelming one for Bamford, with the former Chelsea man once again failing to live up to the performances he showed under Marcelo Bielsa in the top-flight, when he managed 17 goals.

Not only has the 29-year-old only bagged twice in 2022/23, but he has massively underperformed his xG by nearly five, and that could be the difference between safety and relegation in what is an extremely tight battle to avoid the drop.

Patrick Bamford features in Leeds United's Premier League draw against Brighton & Hove Albion at Elland Road.

Considering Bamford is ranked as the 22nd-best performer in Javi Gracia's squad with a 6.34 average rating according to WhoScored, it seems clear that he cannot be considered a reliable long-term option at Elland Road.

Retegui has also averaged more shots (3.9 vs 1.7), key passes (0.6 vs 0.5) and dribbles (0.4 vs 0.2) per game than Bamford, outlining him as a better all-rounder in attack.

As such, it is evident that the Italy star could be a big upgrade on the struggling Leeds star this summer.

Man City Suffer Potential Ben Chilwell Transfer Blow

Rumoured Manchester City transfer target Ben Chilwell looks set to sign a new deal with Chelsea, according to an update from reliable journalist David Ornstein.

Is Chilwell on the move this summer?

The 26-year-old has become an important squad member for both the Blues and England in recent years, proving to be arguably one of the Premier League's leading left-backs. This season, he has made 19 appearances in the league and the only reason the number isn't higher is because of injury problems, which robbed him of a place in the Three Lions' World Cup squad.

Chilwell is out of contract at Chelsea in the summer of 2025, and while that date is still a fair distance away, it does mean the west Londoners are slowly running out of time to get a good fee for his services, should he want a move away.

City have been linked with a summer move for the Englishman, as Pep Guardiola looks to bring in a new left-back who can offer more natural attacking width in the position than someone like Nathan Ake, who has played there eight times in the league so far this season.

A new update has now emerged, though, and it is one that is unlikely to go down too well with City supporters.

Is defender staying put at Chelsea?

According to The Athletic's Ornstein, Chilwell is "set to commit his future to the club by signing a new four-year deal", adding that it "will prolong the wing-back’s stay from 2025 until 2027."

He also mentions that City have been "keen" to bring the 18-cap England international to the club this summer, but may now have to look at other options instead.

Chilwell could have been an ideal summer addition at the Etihad, even though he likely would have cost money, with the Chelsea man exactly the type of play City could do with at left-back. He possesses both powerful running and quality going forward, scoring and assisting twice apiece in the Premier League this season, but he is also a strong defender, winning an average of 1.2 aerial duels per match.

It looks as though Guardiola will have to elsewhere for a new left-back option, however, but someone with a similar profile to Chilwell, in terms of age and playing style, would be just what the doctor ordered. While Ake has done well at left-back this season, a natural in the role will help strengthen City further.

Aston Villa Eyeing Buy-To-Loan Move For 19 y/o

Aston Villa are looking to sign Charlton Athletic forward Miles Leaburn in a possible buy-to-loan move, Football Insider report.

What’s the latest transfer news on Villa and Leaburn?

Unai Emery is set to be backed with a “huge” summer budget ahead of his first full season in charge which could see the club’s transfer record smashed.

However, Villa are also still looking to bring in some of the best teenagers around after signing the likes of Kerr Smith and Rory Wilson last year, with Celtic's Aiden Borland possibly the next gem to arrive at Bodymoor Heath.

Another teenage target on the radar in the Midlands is Leaburn, who has enjoyed a fine breakthrough campaign in the first team at The Valley. The 19-year-old has contributed to 15 goals in 36 appearances this season, with Villa reportedly leading the chase for his services.

Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke provided a fresh transfer update out of Villa Park in the last 24 hours. He revealed that Villa, and by extension owners NSWE, are placing an emphasis on signing youngsters with “huge potential” and provided news on Leaburn.

O’Rourke stated that Villa are keen to sign Leaburn in a deal that could see the forward be loaned back to Charlton in the summer to continue his development at senior level.

Does the deal make sense?

Leaburn has certainly caught the eye of current Charlton boss Dean Holden in recent months, who has labelled the forward as “really exciting” with “huge potential”. He said:

“It proves he’s not just a goalscorer. His all-round game, as much as he’s got to learn, is solid. He is not just a fox-in-the-box, he’s not just someone who will run in behind and he’s not just a target man.

“All of those different parts of his game will improve because it is his first season in senior football. Why can’t he get to 12 or higher than that? He is such a great lad to work with – he wants to improve. He doesn’t for one second think he is the finished article, which is really exciting. Huge potential.”

Leaburn, who stands at a towering 6 foot 5, appears to be a potential star in the making, so securing his services could be a smart piece of business in the long run.

However, in the short term, allowing him to continue playing senior football in League One with The Addicks seems to make sense for all involved. Villa could be securing another gem, Charlton would be receiving a fee and his services on a temporary basis and Leaburn could carry on playing, potentially making everyone happy.

Sheikh Jassim Man United Takeover Update

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani is expecting his next Manchester United offer to be accepted, according to The Guardian.

What’s the latest Man United takeover news involving Jassim?

Jassim has made two bids for the Premier League giants so far, with the latest coming last month after initially missing the deadline. The Qatari banker’s revised offer was thought to be a world-record figure at more than £5bn, but as we know, he is yet to receive the green light to proceed with a takeover.

The Glazers have now scheduled a third and final round of bids, with a deadline set for next Friday. Sky Sports have reported that Jassim remains committed to taking full control at Old Trafford, and it looks as if he is confident of doing just that despite recent reports suggesting the Glazers could stay as majority owners by securing outside investment.

The Guardian’s Jamie Jackson shared an Old Trafford update regarding Jassim on Tuesday, stating that he ‘remains confident he will succeed with his bid to buy Manchester United’.

He believes his offer, which would be debt free, will be accepted, whereas Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s bid would include borrowing.

Down to the Glazers…

As mentioned, the Glazers feel they could stay in Manchester and look to double the value of the club over the next ten years by bringing in investment. The likes of Ares Management Corporation, The Carlyle Group, Elliot Investment Management and Sixth Street Partners all want a stake in the Red Devils, but Jassim is seemingly upbeat about the chances of a full takeover.

His next offer will more than likely need to reach the Glazers’ £6bn asking price to stand a chance of a takeover going through over the coming months. We should find out more over the coming weeks, but with time ticking, Jassim may be looking to get things done quickly in order to help Erik ten Hag in the transfer market.

Tottenham: "Incredible" Manager Hold Talks With Rivals

Tottenham manager target Vincent Kompany has held a three-hour phone call with London rivals Chelsea recently, according to journalist Nathan Gissing.

What’s the latest on Kompany to Spurs?

There have been many, many different reports linking the Man City legend to Spurs in the last month, with some even suggesting that he is chairman Daniel Levy’s top target.

The Lilywhites parted company with former boss Antonio Conte last month after a mutual agreement, leaving interim boss Cristian Stellini and assistant coach Ryan Mason in temporary charge until the end of this Premier League season.

Kompany is on the agenda to replace Conte at Spurs with reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano recently backing their real interest in the Burnley boss. Even though there are some reports of the 37-year-old being unwilling to leave Turf Moor, other conflicting claims state that he is open to talks with Tottenham.

Vincent Kompany

One common denominator among these rumours is Spurs do like the former Anderlecht boss, but they aren’t the only side, with Chelsea also eyeing a move for Kompany.

After sacking Graham Potter, the Stamford Bridge side are still well in the search for their new manager alongside Spurs – posing a threat to Levy and co as both clubs chase football’s most sought-after coaches.

Now, sharing an update on Kompany, reporter Gissing – who contributes to Sky journalist Gianluca Di Marzio’s personal website – says Chelsea are moving for the tactician.

Should Spurs keep pushing for Kompany?

It appears that Chelsea could rival Spurs for another manager, coming after reports of their interest in Luis Enrique and Mauricio Pochettino.

Leading Burnley back to the top flight at the first time of asking, Kompany is attracting real attention as a man in demand, with his stock never being higher.

The Championship leaders have scored more goals, conceded fewest and won more matches than any other side in England’s second tier – highlighting the remarkable job he’s done since taking the reins in Lancashire.

Pep Guardiola is certainly an admirer of his character and leadership, having called him an ‘incredible’ figure whilst holding the utmost respect for his former star.

Chelsea’s presence complicates a Tottenham move for Kompany somewhat, so it will be interesting to see if Spurs keep pursuing or move on to other targets.
