Palace could break their transfer record

Crystal Palace have been heavily linked with Wolves midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White in recent weeks, although the likes of Everton, Southampton and Nottingham Forest are also said to be keen.

What’s the word?

The Old Gold have reportedly put a £30m price tag on the 22-year-old midfielder, who is being tipped to star in the Premier League next season after a superb spell on loan with Sheffield United in the Championship.

In a recent interview with Football FanCast, journalist Pete O’Rourke shared his thoughts on Gibbs-White’s future.

He said: “I think his form at Sheffield United showed just how much potential the player has and he has attracted interest from a number of other Premier League clubs.

“I think Everton, Southampton and Nottingham Forest, so it’s going to be a real battle for his signature and it might take a big money offer for Palace to get him and we could end up seeing them breaking their transfer record.”

Is Gibbs-White worth the fee?

Although he is yet to make much of an impression for Wolves’ first team, contributing just three goals and one assist in 86 appearances for the Old Gold, his performances last season suggest that he is more than ready for the Premier League.

The young midfielder was named Sheffield United’s player of the season as they lost in the playoffs, with his 12 goals and ten assists a big factor behind their impressive season.

Palace last broke their transfer record when they signed Christian Benteke from Liverpool in 2016 for £27m, and while he has undoubtedly been a valuable player over the years, the Eagles might be hoping that Gibbs-White proves to be a better investment.

Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp was full of praise for the midfielder last season, saying:

“I think he will play in the Premier League.

“He’s got so much quality. I love playing with him, he creates a lot for me. He’s disappointed tonight, feels he should have had more goals, but his goal is incredible.”

Therefore, Palace fans will be hoping that Gibbs-White does make the move to Selhurst Park this summer and lives up to his potentially record-breaking transfer fee.

Nottingham Forest keen on Cornet signing

Nottingham Forest have reignited their interest in Burnley winger Maxwel Cornet this summer, according to a fresh transfer rumour which has emerged.

The Lowdown: Cornet on the move?

The Ivorian joined the Clarets last year, and while they were eventually relegated to the Championship, he stood out as one of their best performers.

He scored nine goals in 21 top-flight starts – an excellent return for a struggling team – and Premier League-winning manager Pep Guardiola once said that he was ‘very impressed’ by the winger.

The 25-year-old looks almost certain to leave Burnley after their relegation, and it appears as though Steve Cooper’s side are right in the mix.

The Latest: Forest keen on Cornet

According to The Daily Mail, Forest have ‘revived their bid’ to sign Cornet this summer, with the attacker having a £17.5m release clause in his Burnley contract.

Everton and Fulham are also interested in snapping up the 29-cap Ivory Coast international, but the Reds are ‘pressing ahead’ with a potential move.

The Verdict: Strong wide option

Cooper has already made key attacking inroads this summer, bringing in the likes of Taiwo Awoniyi and Jesse Lingard, but Cornet could be another superb addition.

He has already shown that he can thrive in the Premier League, even in a team not renowned for playing expansive football, so he could come alive even more in the 42-year-old’s attack-minded system.

Indeed, the Ivorian’s former Clarets team-mate Chris Wood once mused that the Burnley squad “were going to sit down at the end of the season and just watch a highlight reel of his best goals”, so impressed were they with Cornet’s impact at Turf Moor.

Battling off other top-flight clubs could be tough, especially Everton, but Forest are an exciting proposition given their ambition in the transfer market. The hope is that Cornet’s head is turned by their interest and that he sees himself as a regular starter at the City Ground.

Journo drops big Spurs transfer claim

Tottenham Hotspur may wait to sign another central defender…

What’s the word?

That’s according to transfer insider Dean Jones, who delivered a fresh update on Spurs’ plans before the transfer deadline on September 1st to This is Futbol, where he said:

“I think that they feel that they’ve got players that they can rotate to fix emergencies, if you will.

“The season pauses in November, so we haven’t got that many games before the January transfer window, so I think Tottenham feel that that’s an area they’ll be able to fix further down the line if they have to.”

Conte blow

The Lilywhites have been very active in the summer transfer window so far, signing no fewer than six new players, all of which are set to play a big part under manager Antonio Conte this campaign.

Spurs are back in the Champions League, so midweek matches will quickly become the norm again and as such, the Italian head coach will need to utilise rotation wisely in a bid to keep the side competitive across all competitions.

A lot of their incomings make sense – an alternative upfront has been found in Richarlison, Ivan Perisic and Djed Spence provide quality at wing-back, whilst Clement Lenglet becomes Conte’s only left-footed and natural centre-back.

However, it shouldn’t stop there as Ben Davies has recently suffered an injury and is facing a fight to be fit for the start of the season and with Joe Rodon on the verge of a loan exit to Stade Rennes, it would leave the manager light on options.

Tottenham have been linked to an array of other centre-backs throughout the summer, including Alessandro Bastoni, who seems set to remain at Inter Milan for the foreseeable future.

However, the likes of Pau Torres and Josko Gvardiol could be alternative targets and both would add an abundance of quality to that backline.

But with the north Londoners seemingly prepared to wait until January at the earliest, Conte may not be a happy man as he’ll want all the strength in depth possible to ensure that Spurs are challenging for a trophy this campaign.

Predicted Spurs XI, team and injury news vs Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur finally return to Premier League action this afternoon as they welcome Southampton to north London to kickstart the 2022/23 campaign.

Lilywhites boss Antonio Conte will be looking to get off to the best possible start after he steered Spurs back into the Champions League last season with a fourth-place finish, snatching it late from arch-rivals Arsenal’s grasp.

Backed in the transfer market with six new summer signings, the Italian will have been delighted with his pre-season preparations but it remains to be seen what sort of side he’ll select this weekend.

Here’s the XI we’re predicting for today’s encounter…

In goal, club captain Hugo Lloris is likely to resume his no.1 duties as Fraser Forster, signed on a free from today’s opponents, has only been brought in as a backup.

Conte will surely remain with his wing-back system, so we’re expecting a back three involving Eric Dier and Cristian Romero, whilst the third spot is a little less clear. Ben Davies missed some of pre-season with injury, so summer loan signing Clement Lenglet could get the nod.

The French centre-back could be joined by one more new arrival in the form of Ivan Perisic, who is expected to become Conte’s first choice left wing-back this season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-so-much-more” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Meanwhile, on the other flank, the Italian head coach has a big call to make as he has as many as three options. Emerson Royal could be chosen ahead of Matt Doherty and £15m signing Djed Spence.

In midfield, Spurs won’t have the services of the injured Oliver Skipp and another summer signing, Yves Bissouma, is a big doubt, so the reigns are likely to go to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Further up the pitch, the £60m acquisition of Richarlison isn’t likely to change much as Conte will surely run with the free-flowing and exciting front three of Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski and Harry Kane.

Predicted Spurs XI (3-4-3): Lloris; Lenglet, Dier, Romero; Perisic, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Emerson; Son, Kulusevski, Kane

Villa get double boost ahead of AFCB

Aston Villa have received a timely boost ahead of this weekend’s Premier League opener against AFC Bournemouth…

What’s the word?

As revealed by reliable Birmingham Mail reporter Ashley Preece, the Midlands outfit will be able to call upon winger Anwar El Ghazi and striker Keinan Davis on Saturday as both have made their return to training in recent days.

“Anwar El Ghazi back amongst the first-team at Bodymoor Heath this week after missing Australia & France trips due to partner’s pregnancy. Keinan Davis also back in training after his latest hamstring setback,” he tweeted.

Timely boost for Gerrard

Whilst neither are expected to start on Saturday afternoon down at Dean Court, having them available is certainly a boost as it bolsters Steven Gerrard’s bench options.

El Ghazi has been absent for much of pre-season but is perhaps one of the few players who can play on the left flank – 12 of his 14 appearances for both Villa and loan club Everton came on that side last term.

On his day, he is a solid enough candidate, too.

Only a season before, he bagged ten goals across 28 top-flight appearances under Dean Smith, including a pair of strikes against Chelsea, as per Transfermarkt.

“I’ve played with him and played against him. In training, he can be unstoppable,” once claimed former teammate Alan Hutton to Football Insider. “In games, I’m watching him thinking, do that, take them on, go forward. You’re urging him to do it because you know he can do it.”

If Gerrard can get the Dutchman back to that kind of form, then he’ll have a very astute alternative on his hands, so his availability this weekend is certainly a plus, particularly with top-flight teams now able to call upon five substitutes within a match.Meanwhile, Davis adds a new dimension to the attack and whilst he’s unlikely to usurp either of Danny Ings or Ollie Watkins anytime soon, he’s a presence that’s there in case of injury or late on if chasing a game.Still only 24, the striker bagged five goals in 15 league appearances for Nottingham Forest on their way to promotion last season.Once lauded as “absolutely unplayable” by former teammate Jack Grealish, the Bodymoor Heath graduate is another bonus to have in the squad heading into the weekend. It’s great news for Gerrard as he will be looking to kickstart the new campaign with three points against the Premier League newcomers.

AND in other news, Gerrard could unearth Villa’s next “absolute goal machine”, he can dethrone Danny Ings…

Man Utd eyeing Mauro Icardi

Manchester United are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain forward Mauro Icardi this summer, according to Argentine media outlet TyC Sports.

The lowdown: Expensive flop

Signed for £45million from Inter Milan having netted 124 goals in 219 appearances for the Italian giants, Icardi has struggled to recapture his best form in Paris.

Despite directly contributing to 48 goals in 92 outings, the 29-year-old Argentina frontman has often been on the periphery of matters in the French capital, never making more than 24 Ligue 1 outings in a single campaign in three seasons at the club.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates-5/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Recently, PSG boss Christophe Galtier explained that the ‘best thing’ for Icardi would be to find a new club having been linked to West Ham, Wolves, Tottenham and Newcastle this summer.

The latest: ‘On the radar’

As per TyC Sports, Man Utd and Galatasaray are both keeping tabs on the eight-cap Argentina star.

It’s claimed that Icardi – who has been training apart from the first team at PSG –  is ‘on the radar’ at Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag attempts to bolster the attacking options at his disposal.

The report also states that the move to United for the man dubbed a ‘pure goal hunter’ by legendary French hitman Jean-Pierre Papin ‘could be on loan with a purchase option’.

The verdict: No risk

Albeit clearly out of sorts having been £19.8million valued ace on loan would represent a shrewd piece of business from the Red Devils hierarchy.

Already in need of additional firepower, Ten Hag’s options could be about to be diminished further as PSG themselves reportedly target misfiring Marcus Rashford, who is believed to be open to a fresh challenge away from Manchester whilst the future of Cristiano Ronaldo also remains in doubt.

Therefore, with 203 domestic career goals all told, adding a player of Icardi’s previously proven class and goalscoring ability to the Carrington ranks would be a welcome boost.

Sharing similar stylistic traits to Jamie Vardy, Luis Suarez and Callum Wilson (FBref), the old-fashioned Argentine centre-forward operates exclusively through the middle and would act as a focal point of the attack, ideally ably supported by wide options such as Jadon Sancho, Anthony Elanga and Anthony Martial.

Tottenham: Journalist claims ‘offer’ has arrived for Garner

Tottenham Hotspur have made an ‘opening offer’ to sign Manchester United midfielder James Garner this summer, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Lowdown: Spurs keep moving?

After the signings of Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet, Djed Spence and, most recently, Destiny Udogie – could Spurs look to further Premier League incomings before September 1?

The Lilywhites have backed manager Antonio Conte throughout this summer transfer window but reports suggest they might not be done there amid continued links to Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo and Garner.

Sporting director Fabio Paratici is thought to be a fan of the latter man, and while some have claimed a deal is unlikely, one reporter claims a bid has gone in.

The Latest: Journalist makes ‘opening offer’ claim…

Indeed, the north Londoners have apparently made their ‘opening offer’ to sign Garner from football giants United.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-3/” title=”Tottenham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Alan Nixon, writing via his Patreon, says Spurs have tabled a bid and ‘plan to snatch’ the 21-year-old this summer ahead of fellow suitors Nottingham Forest.

However, it is believed that the bids so far have been below what the Red Devils are willing to accept.

The Verdict: Make the move?

Having enjoyed a brilliant 2021/22 campaign on loan at Forest, Garner’s ability is evident with the midfield ace even finishing that season as one of Steve Cooper’s top-five performers by average match rating (WhoScored).

The Englishman also averaged more key passes per 90 than any Forest player last season, leaving little wonder pundits like Paul Robinson have called him ‘exceptional’ for his time at the City Ground.

Also able to help solve Tottenham’s troubling homegrown quota issue, moving for Garner could be smart for both on and off-field factors.

Leeds: Boulma drops Sarr update

Leeds United are still in the race to bring Ismaila Sarr to Elland Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Abdellah Boulma, with the French journalist revealing in a recent post on Twitter that, after the 24-year-old’s proposed £25m move to Aston Villa fell through due to a number of complications in negotiations, both Leeds and Crystal Palace remain keen on a late move for the Watford forward.

However, a further report by The Athletic has now revealed that, following the collapse of the Senegal international’s switch to Villa Park, the Hornets are keen on opening new contract negotiations with the winger – in a bid to stave off the Whites’ and the Eagles’ interest in pursuing a deal for Sarr in the coming days.

In his post, Boulma said: “Ismaila Sarr has already taken his visit to Aston Villa, but the player does not agree with the club at the moment. Salary seems to be a problem. Kortney Hause and Cameron Archer were in the deal. Leeds and Crystal Palace are still in the race.”

A real coup

Considering the sheer amount of interest in Sarr’s services this summer, in addition to the undoubted talent the 24-year-old possesses, should Orta manage to get a deal over the line for the winger prior to next week’s transfer deadline, it would certainly represent something of a coup for the Whites’ director of football.

Indeed, despite playing for two poor Watford sides, the £24.3m-rated talent has highly impressed over 50 appearances in his two campaigns in the top flight of English football, scoring ten goals, registering eight assists – averaging a direct goal contribution every 216 minutes played – and creating 14 big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 1.7 shots, making 0.95 key passes and completing 1.6 dribbles per game.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and so much more!”]

In comparison, over Raphinha’s 65 Premier League appearances during his two-year stay at Elland Road, the Brazilian winger scored 17 goals, provided 12 assists – averaging a direct goal contribution every 182 minutes played – and created 22 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.35 shots, making 2.0 key passes and completing 1.85 dribbles per fixture.

As such, while it is true that the latter slightly betters the former’s returns in the Premier League, considering Raphinha’s metrics saw him earn a £55m move to Barcelona this summer, it is evident that Sarr is indeed an extremely talented player in his own right – with his already impressive returns only likely to improve if playing for a side not fighting at the bottom of the table.

Furthermore, with it being well known that the Whites are looking to bring in a new forward to provide Jesse Marsch with greater depth behind Patrick Bamford through the middle, the £71k-per-week Sarr’s ability to be deployed at centre-forward – a position he has played 33 times in his career – would also appear to be an extremely useful string to the attacker’s bow.

Indeed, taking into account all of the above, should Orta manage to get a late £25m deal over the line for the Senegalese sensation who Troy Deeney dubbed “unbelievable” this summer, it would undoubtedly represent an extremely impressive coup for the club.

Aston Villa offered Abdou Diallo

Aston Villa haven’t had the best start to their Premier League campaign and now with Diego Carlos picking up a serious injury, the club are on the search for a new defender in the remaining days of the transfer window, with a potential opportunity emerging.

What’s the latest?

According to French news outlet Le Parisien, Aston Villa have been offered the chance to sign Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Abdou Diallo.

As per the report, the player is available for £8.4m this summer and despite talks not starting yet between the two clubs, Diallo would be keen for a move to Villa Park.

The defender also has interest from other Premier League clubs with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United both named as linked clubs.

Gerrard needs him badly

There is no doubt that Steven Gerrard’s priority focus will be to replace his newly-signed injured centre-back, especially with the manager already extremely limited in the number of options he has in the back-line.

Villa have lost two and won one of their first three Premier League games, as well as taking a comfortable victory from their Carabao Cup second round clash with Bolton Wanderers, and Gerrard will be keen to keep up that winning momentum going but will struggle to do so if a new defender isn’t signed soon.

After stripping Tyrone Mings of the club captaincy a few weeks ago, the Villa boss has put himself in a sticky situation in terms of holding together a harmonious defensive set up, so the opportunity to sign Diallo could not come at a better time for the manager.

The Senegalese defender who was hailed “powerful” by FSV Mainz sports director Rouven Schröder has found himself out of favour in Christophe Galtier’s side with Diallo left on the bench over the first four games of the season, so a move to Villa could be the perfect chance for the 26-year-old to get a fresh start over in the Premier League.

Over his 12 league appearances for the French champions last season, Diallo delivered one assist, tallied up a 90% pass completion rate, made 1.8 tackles, 1.1 clearances and took 69.2 touches per game, as well as winning 62% of his duels combined and successfully completing 73% of his dribbles.

As a result, it is clear from his output last season that the forgotten defender is hard working, likes to get stuck in and has the talent to be reliable and consistent when selected to start, so it could be a major coup for Gerrard in his attempt to strengthen his defence.

With that being said, the powers at Villa Park must act fast to beat off any competitors in the final days of the transfer window, as Diallo could be a fantastic addition to the team and comes with a very modest price tag too.

Newcastle injury news on Krafth vs Wolves

Newcastle United have been dealt an injury ‘worry’ before the play Wolves away from home in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Isak signs

The St. James’ Park outfit have now confirmed the signing of striker Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad, and they will be hoping that he can be involved at Molineux on Sunday.

It is certainly an exciting arrival for the Toon Army, and very much needed in light of Callum Wilson’s recent injury.

The Latest: Krath injury

Speaking to the media in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Eddie Howe has revealed another ‘worry’ over an injury picked up by Emil Krafth, admitting that it ‘doesn’t look too good’ and that it is a ‘real shame’ for the North East club:

“We’ve got a worry over Emil Krafth. We don’t know what the details are currently. He’s going for a scan today but it doesn’t look too good which is a real shame for Emil and for us.”

The Verdict: Worrying

It is certainly worrying to hear of Krafth’s latest setback, and it sounds like that he could face a few weeks or even months out on the sidelines.

The Magpies will want cover for Kieran Trippier at right-back, especially given the injury that he picked up last season, and so will not want to be pressured into playing him in every game.

Losing Krafth for a long time would be a big blow in this sense, and perhaps we could even see the Tynseiders dip into the market late on in the transfer window.
