Media blown away by Conte news at Spurs

Taking to Twitter, numerous journalists in the national media have been left stunned by Tottenham Hotspur news involving manager Antonio Conte.

The Lowdown: Conte slumps…

The Lilywhites’ regrettable 1-0 defeat away to Burnley on Wednesday night arguably comes as the Italian’s lowest point since taking charge in November.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The result was compounded because Tottenham had actually secured a huge three points away to Premier League champions Manchester City just a few days prior to their shock reverse at Turf Moor.

What followed after Spurs’ disappointing trip to Lancashire was an emotional outburst courtesy of Conte, with the Italian openly hinting that he could leave the club.

Sharing that message in what is big news out of N17, there has been no shortage of reaction from various members of the English press.

The Latest: National media share Conte message…

As Conte pulls no punches in his message to Spurs after the Burnley loss, reporters far and wide have given their reaction, with some sharing their belief on what this could mean for the club.

Here’s what these reporters had to say:

“Stunning stuff from Antonio Conte, questioning his own future at Tottenham after their loss to Burnley – their fourth in five games. The only one they didn’t lose? The win at Man City. Spurs had fourth place in their sights, now it looks as distant dream. Worrying times.” – Graeme Bailey, 90min reporter and transfer insider.

“Wow, Conte is one to watch. Explosive comments tonight.” – Nizaar Kinsella, Goal.

“Antonio Conte, one of the best managers in the world, basically asking to be fired is one of the most Spurs things I’ve ever seen.” – Toby Cudworth, 90min.

“WOW. If Conte walks many fans who have never previously raised their voice against ENIC will collectively do so joining those who already have. Tomorrow will be interesting, I wonder when the pre Leeds press conference is?” – Football Insider pundit John Wenham, from his Lilywhite Rose Twitter account.

“Brilliant post match interview with Antonio Conte by @sammatterface for @talkSPORT. Wow. Hinting he might walk. Paraphrasing… He’s never been in this situation before losing games like this. 4 defeats in 5. Maybe he can’t continue. He needs to assess. Phew. Sounded broken.” – Bianca Westwood, presenter as seen on Sky Sports.

The Verdict: Big news…

The former Chelsea boss refusing to rule out a Spurs exit certainly comes as a big and potentially worrying development, and if he doesn’t opt to quit in the near future, it could be one to keep an eye on if Tottenham don’t revive their ailing form.

Conte’s glistening track record highlights his thirst for success, and if Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy cannot back him in the summer window, then there is every reason to believe that the Italian could eventually walk away from N17.

Bailey could leave Aston Villa this summer

Transfer insider Dean Jones isn’t sure whether Leon Bailey will be at Aston Villa next season.

The lowdown

Villa paid £28.8m to sign the 24-year-old from Bayer Leverkusen just last summer. That made him the third-biggest signing in the club’s history, behind Emiliano Buendia and Ollie Watkins, but the winger hasn’t been able to make too much of an impact up to this point.

Having struggled to stay fit, he has started only four Premier League matches, making a further eight appearances from the bench (totalling 472 minutes).

The Jamaican’s solitary Villa goal so far came in the 3-0 win over Everton in September, although he has also provided two assists.

The latest

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones suggested that Villa might let Bailey leave after just 12 months if the right offer arrives at the club’s door.

The journalist admitted: “Bailey I’m not so sure about. I think that he really could be moved on in the summer in the right circumstances.”

The verdict

It’s worth remembering just how good Bailey was at Leverkusen last season. He scored 15 goals and laid on 11 assists in all competitions, and with that kind of return, he looked like a real coup for Villa at the time.

Back in September, then-manager Dean Smith outlined his expectation that the 24-year-old would be a ‘crowd favourite’ at Villa Park.

According to Transfermarkt, Bailey had only missed 13 games through injury across his entire career before he moved to England, which should surely give Villa hope that he can overcome the problems he has encountered this season.

Despite Jones casting some doubt over the Jamaican’s future in the Midlands, the winger deserves more time to prove his worth to Steven Gerrard.

Wolves must unleash Conor Carty

Wolves are in the midst of a poor run of form having lost their three previous Premier League games with a 2-0 defeat against Crystal Palace at Molineux over the weekend following on from away defeats against Arsenal and West Ham United.

As well as this poor run of form, another worrying aspect of the Old Gold’s season so far is their lack of goals scored compared to the other teams around them in the league table.

Bruno Lage’s side have only found the back of the net 24 times in 27 games, leaving relegation-battling teams such as Watford, Everton and Leeds United having scored more times.

With that in mind and the Midlands club’s chances of securing European football dwindling with every game lost, this could force Lage into making some drastic changes to his team at the top of the pitch.

One potential move that the 45-year-old could make would be to dip into the club’s academy to see if any of their young players has what it takes to step up to the senior side and add a much-needed spark.

In terms of who that player could be, 19-year-old centre-forward Conor Carty could potentially catch the eye of the Old Gold manager.

As a product of Wolves’ youth system, the Irishman has racked up a total of 64 appearances across their U18 and U23 sides, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists along the way, showing that he certainly has a lot of attacking and creative talent in him.

Labelled by James Collins as a player that is “growing all the time” that has delivered “threatening” performances for the U23s, Carty could be just what Lage needs to get his side firing.

Having had previous success with giving youth a chance earlier in the season with 19-year-old midfielder Luke Cundle, who delivered a “very assured” display in Wolves’ 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last month in his first Premier League start, the former Benfica boss could replicate that same sort of move by giving the young striker a chance to show what he’s capable of in the Premier League.

After all, it can’t get much worse than Fabio Silva who has not found the net all season long.

If Carty did get a chance and the teenager is able to make the most out of any opportunity he gets to play in the first team, this could well put him in the frame to become a regular in the senior squad for next season.

Callum Scanlon signs new Liverpool deal

Liverpool arguably have the best full-back pairing in the world in Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who have both become an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s team.

A pathway to the first team for Kostas Tsimikas and Neco Williams has thus far been difficult and limited to mere cup appearances and the odd game where one of the regular full-bacvs isn’t fit – so much so that the latter has gone out on loan to Championship leaders Fulham.

However, with the Reds still fighting on all fronts for the quadruple after winning the Carabao Cup a couple weeks ago, opportunities to impress Klopp could be available. Should that also prove to be the case in future seasons, the importance of having depth in the wing-back positions will soon be realised.

One player who has been tipped to become a Liverpool star in the future is left-back Callum Scanlon, who penned his first professional deal with the club this week after signing from Birmingham City as a 15-year-old in December 2020 for £500k.

An England youth international, the 17-year-old is described as ‘highly rated’ at the club, where he has nailed down a starting spot with the under-18s after making his debut last May. The youngster’s former academy coach James Atkins has hailed the starlet as “lightning quick” and “technically very good”.

Scanlon has also shown the ability to play in midfield, just like Alexander-Arnold, who himself graduated from the Reds’ academy.

What makes the 23-year-old such an important player in the Liverpool team, perhaps even more so than Robertson, is his ability to not just double up as a winger in attack, but also occasionally drift into the middle of the pitch to make things happen, much like Manchester City’s inverted full-back Joao Cancelo.

However, the West Derby native does this more because he has the technical ability to play in those areas, compared to Cancelo who also has that technical ability, but is a right-footed defender playing on the left, and cutting in is natural to him.

If Scanlon also has the technical ability to play in midfield, he could follow in the footsteps of Alexander-Arnold as opposed to Robertson. However, should he continue to develop at the same rate, but with his athleticism, aggression and strong delivery, he could perhaps play more like the Scottish defender, bombing up and down the left flank to good effect.

Klopp may already have a long-term successor to Robertson at his disposal on Merseyside, potentially saving the club a few million quid in the transfer market as they would be spared the need to splash out on a new left-back.

Divock Origi expected to leave Liverpool

Liverpool forward Divock Origi is expected to leave the club this summer and will not extend his contract, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Origi a bit-part player

The Belgian has enjoyed a unique Reds career, rarely being a regular starter but scoring some truly iconic goals against the likes of Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham.

Origi has struggled for playing time this season, however, appearing for just 75 minutes in the Premier League and finding himself well down the attacking pecking order.

The 26-year-old’s current Liverpool deal expires at the end of the season and his exit now feels inevitable.

The Latest: Romano makes definitive claim

That’s certainly the opinion of Romano, who took to Twitter to claim that Origi will definitely not extend his stay, with AC Milan eyeing up a move for him:

“AC Milan have already made a proposal to sign Divock Origi on a free transfer. He’s not extending the contract with Liverpool, current deal expires in June and AC Milan are pushing to complete the agreement. Club confident – working on the deal as reported yesterday.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-24/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Time to move on

Liverpool fans will always have a special place in their heart for Origi, considering the cult hero he has become, playing his part in a glorious period of success under Jurgen Klopp.

It makes perfect sense for the Belgium international to find a fresh challenge this summer, though, especially with Luis Diaz’s arrival now arguably making him the sixth-best attacking option at the club.

Minutes will continue to be hard to come by and he is at an age where he should be leading the line elsewhere, writing the next chapter in his intriguing career.

FSG confident over new Mohamed Salah deal

Liverpool owners FSG are confident that Mohamed Salah will eventually reduce his demands and sign a new contract at Anfield, according to a fresh update.

The Lowdown: Salah’s future up in the air

The future of the Reds superstar Egyptian is one of football’s biggest stories currently, with the 29-year-old not yet agreeing a new deal.

Salah’s current contract runs out at the end of next season, meaning he could leave on a free transfer at that point, in what would be an enormous financial blow for Liverpool.

It is thought that the forward’s wage demands are proving to be the main stumbling block, with the Reds not willing to pay him astronomical money.

The Latest: Salah and Abbas to lower demands

There is positive news regarding the situation, however, with Football Insider claiming a source close to Liverpool has informed them that FSG believe a “huge” new deal for Salah will be agreed.

Agent Ramy Abbas Issa was not happy with the initial offer, but the club are confident he will lower his wage demands next time around due in part to the lack of options to move elsewhere.

The Verdict: Tense few months ahead

If true, this would be a massive boost for the Reds, with Salah arguably the world’s best player throughout this season, scoring 20 goals and registering 10 assists in the Premier League.

Losing him at the peak of his powers would be devastating, even though no player is bigger than the club, and he is unlikely to be as loved anywhere else, nor play under a better manager than Jurgen Klopp.

It could be a nervy few months of twists and turns, though, as Salah weighs up his options amid interest from other teams, including Barcelona.

In other news, Liverpool reportedly lead the race to sign one player. Find out who it is here.

Aston Villa targeting de Vrij

Aston Villa are reportedly in the hunt to sign Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij this summer with manager Steven Gerrard keen to improve his defensive options.

What’s the story?

According to Football Insider, Villa are keeping tabs on the Dutch defender with Gerrard looking to sign an A-list centre-back this summer.

The report also states that the defender was valued at around £40m in January with the 30-year-old’s current deal at the San Siro expiring in 2023.

The West Midland club’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also reportedly interested in bringing de Vrij to England this summer with manager Antonio Conte in charge when Inter won the Serie A title last season, with the Dutchman a key contributor to their success.

In fact, the Italian coach once exclaimed that the defender was “like Bonucci.”

Aston Villa must swoop for de Vrij

Valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt despite having just over a year left on his contract, de Vrij certainly won’t come cheap for whoever lands the defender’s signature.

However, it’s no secret that Aston Villa have ambitious plans for the upcoming transfer window, particularly after being able to lure a player of Philippe Coutinho’s pedigree to Villa Park in January, albeit on loan.

The Villans are on course for their first top-half finish in the top-flight for 11 years which will lay decent foundations for Gerrard after the Englishman’s first season in charge of the West Midlands side, having joined from Rangers in November.

Naturally, the next step will be to consolidate that place and push for European qualification. The signing of de Vrij would undoubtedly be a serious statement of intent.

The 30-year-old defender has spent almost eight years in Italy having joined Lazio from Feyenoord in 2014, where he was dubbed a “monster” by teammate Mauricio, before making the move to Inter Milan in 2018 on a free transfer.

Although, this isn’t the first time a Premier League club has been linked with a swoop for the 55-cap Netherlands international.

As well as his impressive international experience, de Vrij boasts impressive experience at club level too, winning the Scudetto last season whilst racking up 46 appearances in European competition as well as 347 in top-flight league football across the Eredivisie and Serie A.

Compared to Aston Villa’s current centre-backs, the 30-year-old is a major step up in quality and calibre.

Although Tyrone Mings has established himself as a regular in England manager Gareth Southgate’s squads, the 29-year-old has only found regular game time in the Premier League whilst being at Villa during the past three seasons.

As for the likes of Ezri Konsa, Calum Chambers and Kourtney Hause, none are current internationals whilst Chambers’ experience of playing in Europe and winning the FA Cup and Community Shield is as experienced as any of Villa’s current defenders get.

Moreover, according to SofaScore, De Vrij wins the majority of both his aerial and ground duels, has a 92% pass completion rate, only loses the ball 4.8 times per match whilst having 62.5 touches on average per Serie A game, also making at least one tackle and interception per game.

Contrastingly, Aston Villa’s best defender statistically, Tyrone Mings, averages 58.5 touches per league game whilst completing 80% of his passes, losing possession 10.4 times per game on average.

The Englishman does manage to make at least one interception per game but is currently averaging 0.6 tackles.

It’s clearly evident that the signing of de Vrij would seriously improve Gerrard’s squad, the main issue will be convincing the Dutchman to swap the San Siro for Villa Park.

Everton: Lampard must keep Calvert-Lewin

Frank Lampard and Everton must do everything in their power to keep Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Goodison Park, with interest said to be high this summer.

What’s the latest?

The Everton striker has been heavily linked with a move to Mikel Arteta’s resurged Arsenal side, with reports suggesting that Calvert-Lewin could in fact leave in the summer to help the Merseyside club with the £373m losses suffered over the last few seasons.

The rules surrounding financial fair play allow for maximum combined losses of £105m over three years, with Everton looking as though they will be forced to sell one of their big-name players in order to comply with FFP.

Former Tottenham and Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has suggested that the 25-year-old England forward would be better placed at West Ham United:

“I think for Calvert-Lewin, West Ham. They need another centre-forward, they cross the ball.”

Though Bent also added that Everton would have to lower their reported asking price of £60m if they wanted to attract viable suitors for the 25-year-old.

“If Everton ask for £60m no one’s buying him for that.” When prompted on Calvert-Lewin’s worth, Bent said: “£35m-£40m”

No DCL, No Party

With the pressures of FFP surrounding them, Everton will need to offload one of either Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison in order to relieve some pressure and reach a more confident position when it comes to balancing their books.

Of course, if the Toffees are to suffer relegation to the Championship this season, both would likely depart.

Having featured just 11 times for Everton this season, scoring on just three occasions, Calvert-Lewin’s goals have been a big miss for the Toffees and it is no coincidence that the Merseyside blues find themselves in the precarious position of 17th, having played their fair share of games without the star man.

It’s easy to forget that the £72k-per-week forward netted a solid 16 Premier League goals just last season and 13 the season prior, which showcases how big a disaster it would be to lose him permanently.

Calvert-Lewin has been a big miss for the Toffees and his importance has been evidenced this season, as Lampard’s side are battling to avoid what would be a catastrophic relegation to the second-tier.

The Toffees faithful will be hoping that Calvert-Lewin can return to his goalscoring ways before the end of the season.

Wolves now enter race to sign “superb” defender who could join on free transfer

Wolverhampton Wanderers have now entered the race to sign a “superb” defender in 2026, and he could be available on a free transfer.

Wolves looking to shore up shaky defence

At this point, Wolves are likely to have major concerns about recording the lowest-ever Premier League points total, having taken a measly two points from their opening 17 games, with Derby County the unwanted holders of the existing record, after collecting 11 points in 2007-08.

Not only have the Old Gold been extremely poor from an attacking point of view, having scored just nine league goals, their defence has also leaked goals far too often, shipping 37, the highest number of any top flight side.

In truth, it could be difficult to attract new players when the transfer window opens in just over one week, given that Rob Edwards’ side are already 16 points adrift of safety, having lost nine matches on the spin in all competitions.

However, they have now set out to sign a new defender, according to a report from Quotidiano Sportivo (via Sport Witness), which states that Wolves have joined the race for Union Berlin’s Diogo Leite, who is expected to leave the German club in 2026.

Indeed, with Leite’s contract due to expire at the end of the season, he will be free to start negotiating a move to a new club next month, with a free transfer possible in the summer, and there is no shortage of potential suitors waiting in the wings.

Bologna, Fiorentina and Girona are also credited with an interest in the Union Berlin star, with a move to Molineux currently deemed unlikely, given that he has aspirations of playing in Europe.

Wolves now want to sign 'top talent' from Man City with player set to leave in January

Rob Edwards’ side need inspiration from somewhere.

ByEmilio Galantini "Superb" Leite could be excellent signing for Wolves

In truth, the chances of Wolves being able to get a deal done seem thin, given that it is looking increasingly likely they will be playing Championship football next season, but the 26-year-old could be a solid addition to Edwards’ squad.

Lauded as “superb” by scout Jacek Kulig, the Portuguese defender is experienced in Europe, having made 16 appearances in the Europa League and 10 in the Champions League, while he has also caught the eye in the Bundesliga over the past year.

Diogo Leite’s key statistics

Average per 90 (past year)

1.63 (94th percentile)

Blocks

1.59 (88th percentile)

Clearances

7.04 (88th percentile)

2.75 (77th percentile)

In fact, given the level of the Porto-born defender’s performances, he is now starting to attract interest from some of Europe’s top clubs.

As such, while Wolves clearly need some inspiration from somewhere if they are going to avoid the drop, Leite may not be an attainable target in January, or at the end of the campaign, at which point they will most likely be a Championship club.

West Ham fans impressed with Joao Mario on his Premier league debut

Despite only managing to steal a point from their home game against Crystal Palace on Tuesday evening, West Ham fans can be encouraged by their teams’ determination, which had been missing in droves during the first part of their campaign.

In a rather uneventful 90 minutes, a Mark Noble penalty helped West Ham back into the game after Christian Benteke had given Palace the lead mid way through the first half. The score remained level throughout the rest of the match but West Ham looked the better of the two sides and had opportunities to take all three points.

One man who particularly impressed for the Hammers was new signing Joao Mario. The Portuguese midfielder, who is valued at £23.4million on Transfermarkt, looked mightily impressive on his Premier League debut, distributing the ball well and contributing defensively too.

After the game, West Ham fans took to Twitter with excitement regarding the performance of their new signing.,.
