Fast bowler to leave Warwickshire at the end of the season, ending a seven-year stay at Edgbaston

He took 134 wickets across all formats for the midlands county, including 37 in their successful 2021 County Championship campaign, at an average of 21.81. Later that summer, he starred in the Bob Willis Trophy Final, taking 5 for 28 in the first innings as Warwickshire beat Lancashire by an innings and 199 runs.In returning to Gloucestershire, Miles will pick back up a record of 313 dismissals from 116 appearances. Though he struggled with injuries at Warwickshire, the seamer has been fit this season but found himself surplus to requirements for their County Championship campaign.He has so far made six appearances in the Vitality Blast for Birmingham Bears, taking five wickets.Reflecting on a return to his boyhood club, Miles said: “I’m absolutely buzzing to be coming back to Gloucestershire. Quizzed on whether that could happen, ex-United star Campbell – speaking in association with – told GOAL: “That would be fantastic. He’s played up for the 18s and the 23s this season, I think. He’s doing really, really well. If he’s anything like his dad, it would be fantastic for the club because Rooney was unbelievable in his playing days – still now, he played in the legends game and he’s still got the technique, that drive and hunger. It would be great for Wayne, Coleen and the family to see another Rooney pulling on the Man United shirt. It would be great for the fans as well.”

Campbell is not the first former United player to back Kai Rooney for senior opportunities. Wes Brown has previously told GOAL of that family name earning further recognition in Manchester: “I’m pretty sure if you played for a club and your son comes through, and he’s at a stage now where he’s like YTS, going to training everyday, then at any point you could be picked by the manager and told ‘you’re training with us’ or ‘you’re in a game’. It will be a great experience.

“Kai, knowing the lad he is, he’ll just work very hard. He will have his head down. Obviously, his dad has legendary status, but it’s all about Kai. He will have to work and do everything himself, make sure he puts the graft in and keeps on learning.

“All you can hope for, even when I was a kid, is getting an opportunity. If you do, can you take it? He’s done really well to get where he is at the moment because I’m guessing at some point, it will have been difficult for him.”

Wayne has tended to stay away from Kai’s matches, in order to avoid becoming a distraction, while mother Coleen is doing her best to ensure that a future away from professional football is also being taken into account.

A source has told of that process: “All the boys are obsessed with football, so Coleen’s had no choice but to embrace it. She wasn’t sure how good they would be, but there’s no denying that Kai has his dad’s talents, and has the potential to make it big.

“Kai is very good, and Coleen and Wayne have always drummed into him that he has to train hard and dedicate himself to it if he wants to make it. But Coleen is determined that he’ll stay grounded, whatever happens. She also knows she’ll have to prepare him for the disappointment if it doesn’t work out. The Rooney name will only get him so far.”

It remains to be seen whether Kai Rooney – who has scored plenty of goals for United at youth level while helping them to trophy wins – will earn first-team opportunities. His dad will always be on hand to offer advice if it is required, with Wayne earning wonderkid status himself when making a senior breakthrough with Everton at the age of 16.

Southampton continue their search for a new manager after the sacking of Will Still, with the Saints’ top manager target open to St Mary’s talks.

Despite only arriving in the summer, Still has been relieved of his duties at St Mary’s Stadium, with last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at home to Preston North End leaving them 21st in the Championship table. Southampton Group Technical Director, Johannes Spors, discussed the exit of the 33-year-old, thanking him for his efforts in recent months.

It’s now a case of Southampton nailing Still’s successor at the club, with former manager Russell Martin linked with a return to the club, following a disappointing time in charge of Rangers, recently being sacked.

Southampton fans are sure to be split over who they want the next manager to be, especially when it comes to Martin, whose tactics divided opinion during his time in charge first time around.

His risk-taking style of play from the back isn’t for everyone, but that said, Pep Guardiola spoke glowingly about his approach and Saints team after his Manchester City side faced them last year.

“When I see the opponent do the things I like to do with my team and they do it really well, I make a compliment. I’m sure I will learn, there were some movements, the reasons why they do things, the movements they make to link to the striker. It’s not easy.”

Coming off his spring training debut over the weekend, Paul Skenes is feeling "fired up" about the Pittsburgh Pirates' upcoming season. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year returned to the mound on Saturday, impressing with his new cutter.

Yet Skenes' new pitch and improvements off his otherworldly rookie season are far from the only reason he's excited for what's in store for the Pirates this season. Skenes noted that this Pittsburgh team feels "different," pointing to the amount of buy-in he's seeing from his teammates.

"On the hitting side we have a couple All-Stars and a really good opportunity to build this thing from within. I think the thing that fires me up the most this year is that we have a lot of buy-in. It just feels different. 30 clubs are probably showing up with hope to spring training. Hope doesn't win ball games, but it's exciting now to see the differences in the locker room from last year. At the end of the day we have to go out there and do it, we have to go out there and prove it and win and show up every day, but I think we have a really good opportunity this year."

Despite the emergence of Skenes, the Pirates had a relatively quiet offseason outside of trading for Spencer Horwitz. Pittsburgh finished the 2024 season 76–86, last in the NL Central, and are approaching an entire decade without a postseason appearance. Skenes lauded what he's seen internally from the Pirates, but it has yet to be seen if it will be enough to overcome an underwhelming offseason and turn this team around from a near decade of futility.

Netflix are reportedly considering lodging a bid for Premier League TV rights to rival Sky Sports and TNT Sports. The streaming giant narrowly missed out on securing a deal for UEFA's Super Cup and for Champions League rights in Germany from 2027-31, but missed out to Paramount. Despite that setback, they now have their eyes on English top-flight broadcasting rights.

Netflix upping live sports efforts

Netflix has made a concerted effort to show more live sports, spending nearly £4 billion ($5bn) on WWE, while also streaming high-profile boxing bouts, too. After Paramount won the Champions League rights in the United Kingdom last week in a reported £1bn ($1.3bn) deal, Netflix are expected to rival Sky and TNT when it comes to the domestic Premier League contracts, according to The Times. The streaming giant is also expected to take on NBC for the American rights to the English top-flight.

The report adds that the latest domestic deals end in 2029, but NPC's one expires a year earlier. That contract is said to be worth $2bn (£1.5bn) and is the Premier League's biggest overseas deal. Bids for the next packages are expected over the next year.

Incidentally, a source told The Times: "The important thing for football – both European-wide and domestic leagues – is that Netflix has shown for the first time that it is interested in buying rights. When you add that to the fact that Paramount has come into the market, it means good news for football because there will be more competition for rights. The Premier League is the most attractive domestic league in the world, so securing some of its rights would be a likely target for both Netflix and Paramount."

UEFA open to Netflix's introduction

Last month, UEFA appeared to welcome the likes of Netflix and Disney joining the broadcasting pool. To that end, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has talked up the footballing body's commitment to innovation in media rights.

He said to the European Football Clubs General Assembly in October: "Through this joint venture, the game will grow. And with [marketing agency] Relevent at our side, we have the strongest team to make it happen. Together, we are building something unique, with ambition. To deliver the most engaging football, the most innovative, the most accessible. To expand our core revenue streams. To inspire new fans to follow our competitions, to drive engagement with new audiences, especially in an ever-changing media and streaming rights landscape. And to make the most of digital platforms, we’ll bring the game closer than ever to everyone. This is how we will strengthen our clubs and keep European football at the very top."

West Ham make £15m+ bid to sign Tiago Gabriel

According to reports in Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, West Ham have made an ‘official offer’ to sign Lecce central defender Tiago Gabriel.

The Hammers’ proposal is thought to be worth €18m (£15.8m), however, this has already been rejected by the Serie A side as they value their 6ft 4 defender at €25m (£22m).

Lecce’s valuation applies to next summer, so it looks as if there is no chance of a January move materialising.

The report adds the 20-year-old has ‘impressed with his on-ground defending and has also been very dominant aerially’, something which can be backed up by FBref as Gabriel ranks in the top 2% of defenders when it comes to aerials won.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are now in advanced talks to sign Independiente’s Patrik Mercado, with a deal for the midfielder, who is in line to become Rob Edwards’ first signing, almost done.

Wolves are looking to sign a new midfielder amid the uncertainty surrounding Joao Gomes’ future at Molineux, with it recently emerging the 24-year-old would be willing to make a move to Old Trafford.

The Old Gold really would be gambling with their Premier League status if they sanctioned Gomes’ departure next month, but they are already very much up against it, having taken just two points from their opening 11 matches.

Edwards will be looking to oversee a major turnaround, starting this weekend against Crystal Palace, and if the new manager is able to get his side within touching distance of 17th place by January, a few new additions could help propel them to safety.

Wolves now in advanced talks to sign Patrik Mercado

According to a report from El Diario (via Sport Witness), Wolves are now in advanced talks to sign Independiente midfielder Mercado, having emerged as frontrunners in the race for his signature, and the deal is almost done.

As such, the 22-year-old is in line to become Edwards’ first signing at Molineux, and the deal is likely to be relatively inexpensive, with a €5.96m (£5m) fee being touted.

Sevilla and a number of unnamed Portuguese clubs are also in the race for the maestro, but it is looking like he could be heading to Wolves, even though the Ecuadorian would be a risky signing, amid their struggles at the wrong end of the table.

The versatile midfielder, who is capable of playing in defensive and attacking midfield roles, is yet to prove himself outside his home country, and may take more time than Edwards’ side have available to adjust to life in the Premier League.
