Liverpool fans flock to Sky’s Adeyemi news

Flocking to Twitter, many Liverpool fans have erupted as Sky Sports Germany backs news on reported FSG target and Red Bull Salzburg striker Karim Adeyemi.

Jurgen Klopp’s side, starting the 2021/2022 campaign in imperious form, have looked seemingly unstoppable at times going forward.

Scoring 17 goals in five games alone across all competitions in October, their last Premier League outing away to bitter rivals Manchester United showcased exactly what they’re capable of.

Their stunning 5-0 win at Old Trafford set a benchmark for the high level demanded by Klopp but that doesn’t mean FSG and co are totally ignoring the transfer market.

Indeed, as per Sky in Germany, Liverpool are indeed one of the sides to have ‘expressed an interest’ in signing red hot striking sensation Adeyemi.

Backing other reports, Sky sources now say that the exciting 19-year-old, who has scored 15 goals in all competitions already this season (Transfermarkt), is a target for the Reds.

Flocking to this claim, it’s safe to say many fans are excited and want to see him move to Anfield – with one of them even comparing the teenager to Sadio Mane.

Ernest Hilaire wants to break the ice with WIPA

The WICB’s incoming CEO is determined to usher in a new era of cooperation with an increasingly militant WIPA

Alex Brown23-Sep-2009Ernest Hilaire makes no attempt to sugar-coat the situation. Speaking before West Indies’ abject top-order batting performance against Pakistan at the Wanderers, the incoming West Indies Cricket Board chief executive spoke chasteningly of the manner in which the board and West Indies Players’ Association allowed an industrial dispute to descend into an international embarrassment.Hilaire will assume the reins from Steve Camacho, the WICB’s acting CEO, on October 1 and his first order of business will be to end the damaging dispute with the West Indies’ Players Association that prompted leading players including Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan, to undertake strike action. The recent moves of WIPA and WICB to accept the recommendations proposed by the region’s CARICOM leaders appears a step in the right direction. However with the ICC’s pledge of a best-versus-best Champions Trophy already in tatters on account of West Indies’ second-string touring party – on Wednesday only a defiant rearguard and some inspired bowling staved off a complete rout against Pakistan – much damage has already been done.Hilaire recognises as much, and is determined to usher in a new era of cooperation with an increasingly militant WIPA. The veteran St Lucian administrator is hopeful that West Indies’ next international assignment – the Test and one-day tour of Australia – will witness a return to normality.”We need to work with WIPA in the future and make sure we do so constructively,” Hilaire told Cricinfo. “We need to be more mature about our relationship. The threat of strike action should not be a weapon of choice in negotiations. We need to have respect for each other and build trust in each other and identify that we are partners in this. We have the same ultimate goal, and that is to restore West Indies cricket to its pinnacle.”We must all ensure that we never go through this again. Even if we don’t agree with WIPA, we have to be mature and professional enough to resolve it without resorting to the measures we have in the recent past. Not for one minute could we dream that there will never again be differences between the board and the players. We just need to handle those in a mature and professional way. Nobody is looking to destroy WIPA.”Hilaire concedes the board’s governance has suffered from “inefficiencies” and “failures to communicate” in the past. He intends to submit a plan that will allow the WICB to streamline its operations and “build a professional and modern high-performance structure” that will assist the senior team in recouping the ground lost during this year’s damaging labour dispute, while also addressing the oft-neglected domestic system. They are lofty ambitions – particularly for a board with a lamentable recent performance record and a reputation for conflict among its various regional members – but Hilaire believes all will be attainable during his term as chief executive. To do so, he will need the board and the players’ union to lay down their arms and commit to a long-term partnership; a truce he hopes to broker in the short-term.”It would be very difficult for anyone to make the case that the board has been at its most efficient and effective,” he said. “That can be said of a lot of organisations and corporations, too. You just have to look at the size of the staff and the general ability to cope with the demands of international cricket. We have to have the capacity to implement changes, or we risk going down the same old road.”There are some long-lasting issues. There needs to be better efficiency and better lines of communication between the two parties. The issue of rights and contracts I suspect might take a little longer to resolve than some of the other issues. But we must make sure that the core issue of getting the players back on the field is not contingent on just one area of negotiations.”We have a very proud cricketing heritage. We dominated world cricket in the 1980s and for a period of the 1990s. The true dream of West Indies cricket is to return to that dominance, but we of course realise that there is a long, long road ahead for us to realise that. What we have is a very distinct brand of cricket – the way we bat, bowl and carry ourselves. That has to be rediscovered, but we must ensure that we do not become stuck in the past.”

Everton partner with The Turmeric Co.

Some Everton fans have been reacting to some news that has emerged on a new partnership, and it’s fair to say they are excited by the possible fitness boost for Toffees players.

The Goodison Park faithful announced a partnership with The Turmeric Co. with a launch video on their official Twitter page, in which Wales international and founder Hal Robson-Kanu spoke to Head of Nutrition Lloyd Parker and defender Mason Holgate about its benefits, including Holgate’s experience relieving stiffness and soreness in his body.

Everton Women player Izzy Christiansen also revealed how their products help her recover from games quicker.

As per the Merseyside club’s website, the nutrition-packed turmeric shots ‘enhance performance and aid recovery’, and are ‘scientifically proven to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-depressant properties, in addition to assisting with weight management and improving skin condition’.

Any boost to the players on the pitch will be welcomed by supporters, and some Toffees in particular are excited about the partnership and how it can help the team, given a poor run of form that has seen them lose their last three matches in the Premier League.

Their poor run of form has of course not been helped by injuries to the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucouré, so any boost in the health and fitness department is welcomed.

Everton fans on partnership

These Blues gushed as the partnership was announced on Twitter, with one EFC fan even going as far as to claim that they are ‘buzzing’, although perhaps with a hint of sarcasm too…

Smith century sets up strong South Australia

The opener James Smith scored his maiden first-class century to put South Australia in a strong position at stumps on the second day against Tasmania

Cricinfo staff14-Oct-2009
ScorecardThe opener James Smith scored his maiden first-class century to put South Australia in a strong position at stumps on the second day against Tasmania. At the close, the Redbacks had reached 4 for 225 and were only 11 shy of Tasmania’s total, with Mark Cosgrove well set on 46 and Graham Manou on 2.The strong reply was set up by Smith, who was playing his fifth first-class match. He struck 20 fours in his 116 before he became the second of three wickets for Jason Krejza, who also picked up Tom Cooper for 11 late in the day. Smith and Cosgrove had combined for a 78-run stand that continued the impressive work started by Smith and Daniel Harris in their 94-run opening partnership. There was little for the Tigers to celebrate on the second day, although an impressive innings from their debutant wicketkeeper Brady Jones was a rare highlight. Jones top scored with an unbeaten 45 batting at No. 9 in the Tigers’ innings of 236 but he had little support.

Glazers looking at two Solskjaer successors

Manchester United’s owners have their eye on two managers to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when it comes to the time to relieve the club legend from his duties, according to reputable journalist Lewis Winter for the Daily Express.

Duncan Castles took to the Reach PLC ‘Transfer Window’ podcast to reveal some juicy details in the highly-speculated Manchester United manager saga, claiming that the Glazers have narrowed the search down to two names – Mauricio Pochettino and Brendan Rodgers.

He elaborated by saying: “They are putting out a message that they still believe in the cultural reboot, the kind of PR story that they’ve sold around Solskjaer. They therefore want a manager to fit that profile.

“I think that reduces down to most likely a couple of names, one of whom they’ve been interested in for a long time, Mauricio Pochettino, who may become available because he did not want to be at Paris Saint-Germain this summer, he was ready to go back to Tottenham.

“Paris Saint-Germain is obviously a very fragile situation for any coach. I can see why the Glazers are looking at the possibility that Pochettino might become available at some point during this season.

“Another name very prominent is Brendan Rodgers, who has a profile in terms of the kind of football he plays and development of youth that would appeal and fit with that cultural reboot idea and is interested in moving from Leicester at some point in the not too distant future to one of the top clubs in England.”

Solskjaer is yet to be sacked from the Manchester United, but the clock is running down after mounting speculation from the media and calls from some fans to move on from the former Red Devils striker amid devastating home defeats to two huge rivals in Liverpool and Manchester City.

Rodgers’ record

Rodgers is currently managing Leicester City and was recently linked with the Newcastle job, but he quickly dismissed rumours of the move, saying that he was ‘very happy’ at the Foxes. However, could his head turn for a Champions League side with a winning history and Cristiano Ronaldo in tow?

Rodgers’ most famous role is with Manchester United’s fiercest rivals Liverpool, so it would be interesting to see if he would be genuinely interested in taking up the position after almost winning the Premier League with the Merseysiders in 2013/14.

Former Liverpool star Steve McManaman has spoken on the Anfield connection potentially affecting Rodgers move to Manchester United, saying: “I can’t see Brendan going there. I think he’s got the credentials, yes, but I think his history with Liverpool would be too much for everybody.”

Pochettino gets McManaman’s backing

Pochettino is the other candidate said to be in contention for the managerial role at Old Trafford. The former Spurs boss is currently in France taking care of a star-studded Paris Saint Germain team which includes the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and of course Lionel Messi. The Glazers will surely be looking at the PSG manager’s experience with, and connections to, some of the biggest footballers in the world right now.

McManaman also weighed in on Pochettino’s potential for the position at Old Trafford and sees him as a more fitting appointment for United. He wrote in his column for horseracing.net: “It wouldn’t surprise me if Manchester United went back and got Mauricio Pochettino.

“Anyone who works at Paris Saint-Germain for a couple of years has normally had enough of it! And Poch would probably be the man because of his knowledge and experience of England and the Premier League.”

Fans will be buzzing

While Rodgers may have strong Liverpool connections as mentioned above, he dominated Scottish football during his time at Celtic, masterminding an unbeaten season in 2016/17, while he also eliminated United en route to winning the FA Cup with Leicester last term.

Meanwhile, Pochettino guided Tottenham to their one and only Champions League final in 2019 and consistently qualified them for the competition, with Spurs sliding significantly since his departure two years ago.

Therefore, considering the rich stock of both candidates on the Glazers’ shortlist, United fans may well be buzzing over the names who are line to replace Solskjaer if the incumbent manager is given his P45 in the near future.

Cheruvathur puts Kerala in driver's seat

A round-up of the first day’s play of the third-round matches of the Ranji Trophy Plate League 2009-10

Cricinfo staff17-Nov-2009

Group B

ScorecardKerala took the upper hand against Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) after a superb bowling display from right-arm seamer Sony Cheruvathur at the Gandhi Memorial Science College in Jammu. Cheruvathur and fellow fast bowler Raiphi Gomez rattled the J&K batsmen, sharing nine wickets between them. Cheruvathur finished the day with a haul of six, as none of the home team batsmen could better Ian Dev Singh’s 35 at the top. Kerala faltered as well, during the reply, after Abid Nabi had them floundering at 27 for 3 in the ninth over. But Sreekumar Nair and Sachin Baby fought back with an unbeaten partnership of 32.
Scorecard
Rain in Vijaywada curtailed the first day’s play between Madhya Pradesh and Andhra to only 30 overs, at the end of which the visitors had reached 63 for 2. Play started on time and MP’s openers, Naman Ojha and Jalaj Saxena, added 45 before Ojha was dismissed for 21 by Syed Sahabuddin. Saxena fell soon after, edging Sahabuddin to the wicketkeeper, with the score on 56. Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Devendra Bundela scored four each before play was washed out.

Group A

Scorecard
Jharkhand crawled in their first innings, after choosing to bat against Assam, reaching only 160 for 4 in 82 overs on the first day in Guwahati. Opener Siddhartha Sinha top scored with 89, but he played 252 deliveries and spent five hours at the crease to get there. His stodgy resistance came after Jharkhand had lost two early wickets and were 21 for 2 within the first ten overs. Sinha and his captain Saurabh Tiwary, who scored 35 off 98 balls, added 80 for the third wicket and Sinha added another 56 with Rajiv Kumar. Kumar was the slowest of them all, taking 126 balls to plod to 21 but he remained unbeaten at stumps. Sairaj Bahutule picked up 2 for 34 off 15 overs, an expensive economy-rate compared to Arlen Konwar’s 1.07 (30 runs in 28 overs).
Scorecard
Swapnil Asnodkar shone for Goa with a well-compiled half-century against Rajasthan in Margao. The hosts started on the wrong foot though, after being put in, losing Sagun Kamat off the second ball of the day. Even as wickets fell regularly, Asnodkar braved all odds to grind out his fifty, hitting nine fours and a six en route. The unbeaten stand of 43 with Rahul Keni (26 not out) bode well for the hosts, even as 51 overs could be managed in the day.
Scorecard
There was no play on the first day between Vidarbha and Tripura in Nagpur because of rain. The weather was so bad that even the toss could not take place. Umpires S Ramakrishna and R Subramanian, after the third and final inspection at around 3.30 pm, called off play for the day.

Newcastle handed Henderson boost by MUFC

An update has emerged on Newcastle target Dean Henderson, regarding Manchester United’s stance on his future.

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, the Red Devils are willing to allow the shot-stopper to leave on an 18-month loan to stop him from wasting his career on the bench at Old Trafford.

Newcastle are reportedly interested in a January swoop for the England international as they look to bolster their squad in the upcoming transfer window, with United now opening the door to a potential deal.

Get it done

Eddie Howe must sanction a Newcastle deal to sign Henderson following this update on United’s plans for him, as it could be a shrewd piece of business for the club moving forward.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-howe-ter-stegen” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

A loan for 18 months could be an ideal agreement for the Magpies given their current situation in the goalkeeping department. Freddie Woodman, Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow all remain on the books at St. James’ Park and having Henderson on loan for 18 months would provide the club with ample time to shift one or two of them on to fund a permanent move for the young Englishman.

Newcastle could sign him on a permanent deal if he impresses enough in the year-and-a-half, using money they rake in from the potential sales of Woodman, Darlow and/or Dubravka. However, if they paid for Henderson in full straight away instead of landing him on loan, they could have four permanent goalkeepers at the club at the same time.

This could cause issues both in terms of the finances and the mood on the training pitch. A loan deal means that Newcastle can pull the plug on him if they are unable to shift others on, or if his arrival brings the best out of one of the three shot-stoppers already at the club.

In terms of his quality, Toon legend Alan Shearer previously gave a glowing endorsement of the £120k-per-week beast following his spell on loan at Sheffield United, naming him in his Premier League Team of the Season. He said:

“It was tough to leave out Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, but Sheffield United’s season has been one of the best stories of the campaign and Henderson has been key to their success.

“The Manchester United loanee has kept 10 clean sheets and his bravery and confidence beyond his 23 years. He is a star in the making.”

This suggests that he could also have the quality to come in and be a success on the pitch, whilst also helping the club financially, as he impressed Shearer enough to name him as the best goalkeeper in the 2019/20 campaign. Therefore, Howe must ensure that he can seal a loan deal for Henderson when the January window opens in under two months.

Richard Scott named Middlesex coach

Richard Scott has been named Middlesex’s new head coach with former England quick Richard Johnson his deputy and Australian Mark O’Niell joining as batting coach

Cricinfo staff28-Nov-2009Richard Scott has been named Middlesex’s new head coach with former England quick Richard Johnson his deputy and Australian Mark O’Neill joining as batting coach.Scott, who had a six-year county career with Hampshire and Gloucestershire as well as playing some second XI matches for Middlesex, took temporary charge of the club in 2009 after Toby Radford resigned midway through the season.”Following the unexpected resignation of Toby Radford in early July, Richard handled himself extremely well in testing circumstances,” said Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s managing director. “I enjoyed working with him and have been reassured and impressed with the way he works, coaches and treats people.”He has no ego, is extremely organised, efficient and gets things done. Unlike many modern coaches who like the sound of their own voice, believe everything they say is correct and want to be the star of the show, Richard sits back, listens and works quietly with a player. I believe he has the potential to become an excellent coach.”Johnson, who played three Tests for England, spent 10 seasons with Middlesex before moving to Somerset but returned to close out his career at Lord’s until retiring in 2007.”Most professional coaches are former batsmen but I wanted Middlesex’s assistant coach to have a fast bowling pedigree,” Fraser said. “Fast bowlers are the most consistent match-winners in cricket, but historically I believe they have not been given the support they deserve.”Having played with Richard for several years I know him extremely well and have been impressed with the way he has begun his post playing career. Despite moving to and playing for Somerset, he is a Middlesex boy, and everyone I have spoken to has been extremely complimentary about the progress he is making as a coach. I believe he will have a major impact on the young players at the club as they progress through the system.”O’Neill, meanwhile, comes with a strong pedigree as a batting coach after having worked with New Zealand along with New South Wales and Western Australia. Middlesex are also in the process of recruiting part-time spin-bowling and wicket-keeping coaches to supplement the staff during the 2010 season.

The last six home side batsmen contributed only 28 runs, leaving Vithanage to do much of the scoring from 98 for 5. Sri Lanka struggled to stitch together substantial partnerships – there were six stands worth between 26 and 35 – but Vithanage stood firm to finish the job. He was also helped by the indisciplined Pakistan bowling, which sprayed 16 wides.Sri Lanka’s lower order, though, did a better job than their Pakistan counterpart. The visitors’ captain, Azeem Ghumman, made a measured 65 to take the side to 134 for 2, an ideal platform. However, with none of the other batsmen crossing 25, the last six wickets went down for 38 runs.

Rangers manager announcement soon?

Rangers are now on the verge of announcing former Ibrox star Giovanni van Bronckhorst as the new Light Blues manager, according to The 4th Official’s latest update on the Gers’ hunt for a Steven Gerrard replacement.

The lowdown: GVB profiled

Rangers are seemingly acting fast to replace Gerrard, who left to join English Premier League side Aston Villa last week.

Van Bronckhorst is well known to the Gers faithful after spending three years with the Light Blues during his playing career. He fetched a £12.15million transfer fee when he was sold to Arsenal in 2001.

The Dutchman has had two previous stints in senior management, first at Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord and more recently at Chinese Super League team Guangzhou R&F.

He boasted a near-62% win record in the former post, but that slipped to 35% in the latter (via Transfermarkt).

The latest: Matter of hours

The expectation following a ‘really really positive’ Saturday meeting between Van Bronckhorst and Rangers is that the deal would be done relatively swiftly, and that’s now coming to fruition.

“According to my source,” the The 4th Official’s post on Monday evening read, “we shouldn’t be surprised if Giovanni van Bronckhorst is announced by Rangers in the next 24-48 hours.”

The verdict: The one fans wanted

If Rangers can get Van Bronckhorst in within the stated timeline, then he should be able to take the reins for the weekend’s Scottish Cup semifinal clash with Hibernian. That would be something of a baptism of fire.

Still, they deserve credit for moving quickly, having scheduled discussions with a top candidate within two days of Gerrard’s official exit – compare that to Celtic, who spent the entire summer in chaos chasing Eddie Howe and eventually landing on Ange Postecoglou.

And according to The Daily Record’s Keith Jackson, Van Bronckhorst is the appointment most of the fans want too, so this update will be music to their ears and the atmosphere at Hampden at the weekend should be electric if all goes to plan.

In other news, Steven Gerrard wants these two players at Aston Villa.
