Wicket-keeping maestro breaks byes record

Another world wicket-keeping record for Jack Russell, a triple hundred from Mike Hussey, and a win for Glamorgan inside two days were amongst the features of an action-packed day in the Frizzell County Championship

Stephen Lamb17-Aug-2002Another world wicket-keeping record for Jack Russell, a triple hundred from Mike Hussey, and a win for Glamorgan inside two days were amongst the features of an action-packed day in the Frizzell County Championship. There were also victories for Warwickshire, Yorkshire and Hampshire in the First Division.Ashley Giles appropriately claimed the final wicket as Kent were duly dispatched by Warwickshire in less than half an hour at Edgbaston. The visitors resumed on 304 for nine, still nine runs adrift. David Masters (68) and Martin Saggers (5*) at least had the satisfaction of making the hosts bat again before Masters was caught at gully. Giles finished with seven for 142 and match figures of 12 for 216. Michael Powell then hit two of three balls he faced for four to complete Warwickshire’s win.Hampshire completed a four-wicket victory over Somerset to deepen the Cidermen’s relegation worries. Although Andrew Caddick dismissed Will Kendall and Robin Smith this morning, Dimitri Mascarenhas held his nerve either side of lunch, making an unbeaten 27 to see the hosts to the brink of victory, which was clinched by a single from Adrian Aymes. What had promised to be a competitive final day in the Roses Match turned out to be a melancholy procession of Lancashire batsmen at Old Trafford, as bottom-of-the-table Yorkshire emphatically won their first match of the season. England off-spinner Richard Dawson took five for 42 as Lancashire, set 299 to win yesterday, made just 148. Veteran Neil Fairbrother (38) was the only batsman to get beyond 16. When he became Steve Kirby’s second victim it was effectively over. Yorkshire won by a tidy 150 to deepen Lancashire’s relegation fears.Jack Russell broke another world wicket-keeping record at Bristol as Mike Hussey racked up an unbeaten 310 in Northants’ mammoth 746 for nine declared. Russell did not concede a bye in the entire Northants innings, breaking the first-class record set by S Reuben Paul, the Tamil Nadu keeper who kept a clean sheet throughout the Karnataka innings of 716 at Bhadravati in 1995-96. Hussey’s triple hundred was the second of the season (Graeme Hick made 315* against Durham in June), and included two sixes and 38 fours. He added a massive 318 for the sixth wicket with Graeme Swann, who made a career-best 183 (three sixes, 24 fours). At stumps Gloucestershire had reached 172 for four in their second innings, still 152 behind.Glamorgan took just two days to complete a whirlwind win over Durham at Chester-le-Street. Michael Kasprowicz was again the hero, making an unbeaten 26 to extend the visitors’ first-innings lead to 109, and then adding five top wickets as Durham collapsed from 77 without loss to 114 all out. Robert Croft (four for 20) also featured, as Kasprowicz finished with match figures of 11 for 105.

Pundit claims Neves would be a great signing for Liverpool

Liverpool are in need of a new midfielder after seeing influential star Georginio Wijnaldum leave for free this summer, and former Liverpool ace Paul Stewart believes that Wolves’ Ruben Neves would be a good signing.

Neves has been with Wolves since they were in the Championship but it has been no surprise to see how easily he’s taken to life in the Premier League considering he was captaining Porto in the Champions League before his move to England and he could be the sort of midfielder Liverpool go for, especially at a snip of £35 million, the fee he could be available for according to The Athletic.

Wijnaldum proved himself to be one of Jurgen Klopp’s best signings during his tenure at Liverpool after arriving for £25 million from then relegated Newcastle United, and with consistently good performances and important goals like his header against Barcelona, the Dutchman certainly paid back his price tag.

Klopp will know that he must replace Wijnaldum’s energy, quality and strong mentality and Neves has proved during his time at Wolves that he has all those attributes as well as a deadly set-piece, and Stewart believes that the Portuguese international would be a great signing as he told Football FanCast:

“I think Neves has proved himself in the Premier League for me. So I think he’d be a really good signing at that price because for a player of his quality it’s nothing.”

Neves has formed a formidable partnership with Joao Moutinho over the last three seasons but with the Fosun group now willing to sell Neves so Bruno Lage has more funds to spend in the transfer window, it could be the end of the road for the 24-year old at Molineux.

Liverpool have held an interest in Neves for a number of years now and with his price now very affordable, Klopp could see this as the perfect time to strike a great deal for a superb technician on the ball.

Man City linked with Kalvin Phillips

Manchester City have been linked with a move for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips recently and he could be a superb addition to Pep Guardiola’s side should he make the move to the Etihad this summer.

What’s the word?

According to Tutto Juve, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Juventus are all keen on the England international this summer after his impressive debut campaign in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old is contracted at Elland Road until 2024 and is currently valued at £27m, which puts Marcelo Bielsa’s side in a strong position when it comes to keeping the midfielder at the Yorkshire club this summer.

Would he be a good signing for Man City?

The midfielder, who is a graduate of the academy at Leeds United, showcased his ability with a man of the match performance in England’s opening game victory against Croatia in the European Championships recently and has earned the nickname ‘the Yorkshire Pirlo’ due to his ability to dictate games from deep in Bielsa’s side in recent seasons.

Last season saw the Englishman make 29 appearances in the Premier League, in which he contributed one goal and three assists, averaging a solid 7.01 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Phillips’ former teammate at Leeds, Alex Mowatt, was full of praise for the England star earlier in the season, saying:

“I’m so happy for him. He’s done unbelievable.”

“Since Bielsa came in he’s been ridiculous. He’s got Leeds promoted as well and rightly so he’s been called up to the England squad.”

In their first season back in the top-flight, Bielsa’s side outran every other side in the league and Phillips’ energy would surely be appreciated by Pep Guardiola at City should he make the move to the Etihad this summer.

With next season likely to be Fernandinho’s last, the Englishman could fill a hole in midfield left by the Brazilian and could compliment Rodri well in games where Guardiola wants to take a more defensive approach.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936″]

Therefore, sporting director Txiki Begiristain should definitely consider signing Phillips this summer, as it seems as if he is only going to get better after his impressive performances for club and country in the past year.

And, in other news… Txiki must seal Man City swoop for “world-class” beast

Fireworks in Barbados Fire & Commercial Shield

Oran Bristol yesterday advanced to the final of the Barbados Fire & Commercial Shield competition amidst some heated discussion and debate after their victory over Malvern

10-Sep-2002Oran Bristol yesterday advanced to the final of the Barbados Fire & Commercial Shield competition amidst some heated discussion and debate after their victory over Malvern.Bristol will have to wait to see who their opponents will be as the other semi between Wotton and Piton Dover will have to be replayed because play could not resume after rain fell.Malvern 188 in 39.4 overs lost to Bristol 155-2 in 30 overs by virtue of faster scoring rate.At Old Coleridge: Bristol outplayed the visitors, but at the end the Malvern camp left promising to protest the result after they were surprised when light was offered to the batsmen at 5:30 p.m.Bristol were making light work of their target with Man-Of-The-Match Norton Thompson paving the way with a polished 68 not out. He added an unbroken third-wicket stand of 40 with Michael Shepherd (24 not out). The umpires offered light and the Bristol batsmen accepted, thereby securing the victory and giving their supporters much to shout about.Bristol were scoring at 5.16 runs per over when the match concluded ahead of Malvern’s rate of 4.7 per over. Midway in the Bristol innings there was a break for rain but the officials did not revise the target and this seems to be the "major beef" for Malvern.Rule 21 governing the competition states: If the team batting second has not had the opportunity to complete the agreed number of overs and has neither been bowled out nor passed the opponents score, the following shall apply, provided that at least 15 overs have been bowled:1. The result shall be decided on the run rate throughout each innings and the team with the higher run rate shall be the winners.2. If, due to a suspension of play, the number of overs in the innings of the team batting second has to be revised, their target shall be calculated by multiplying the revised number of overs (this includes overs before interruption) by the run rate of the team batting first. There was no stopping Thompson, who added 59 for the first wicket with Owen Skeete (24), and 56 for the second wicket with skipper David Carrington (26).Earlier, play started 30 minutes late due to rain and Malvern were kept in check by John Greaves, who bagged three for 33.Jefferson Goodridge topscored with 34, and former Division 1 batsman Kirk Clarke chipped in with 27. Ivor Holligan made 22 not out at the bottom of the innings.Wotton 171-6 in 38 overs vs Piton DoverAt Wotton: A spot at the southern end of the pitch forced the umpires to call off the match at 3:30 p.m. before defending champions Dover could start their reply. The umpires decided to abandon the contest after seepage under the covers from rain during the lunch break. The match was dubbed the "Christ Church Derby" but both sides left the ground contented with the officials’ verdict and will be looking forward to the rematch.A hard-hitting 64 not out by Leon Layne kept the Wotton innings together. The former YMPC batsman hit four fours and four sixes off just 68 balls before a large crowd as Wotton left Dover requiring 4.5 runs per over.

Spurs plan Nuno talks

According to a report by Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are now planning talks with Nuno Espirito Santo behind the scenes and it is even said that managing director Fabio Paratici is personally leading the pursuit.

The Lowdown: Spurs manager search takes twist…

After failed talks with Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso, Spurs are back to square on in their hunt for a new manager and must re-evaluate the list of candidates.

As such, links have re-emerged to the likes of Graham Potter and Nuno in recent days, with talkSPORT reporter Ian Abrahams even stating it is a two horse race between the pair for Tottenham’s hotseat.

The arrival of new managing director Paratici is also a crucial factor in Tottenham’s manager search with the Italian set to oversee their on-field sporting operations.

The Latest: Tottenham planning Nuno talks…

As per Football Insider, Tottenham are now plotting talks with Nuno behind the scenes in what they call a ‘shock twist’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The club’s stance on appointing the Portuguese has apparently changed due to a series of collapsed talks, with Spurs seemingly lurching from one disaster to the next.

A Spurs source has now told the outlet that Nuno is a contender to replace Jose Mourinho and negotiations are now expected with the ex-Wolves gaffer.

Paratici is also believed to be personally leading the pursuit for him after the north Londoners conducted background checks.

The Verdict: Great candidate?

Lauded as an ‘outstanding manager’ by talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan recently, who wanted him at Spurs, it is little wonder given what he accomplished at Molineux before an emotional farewell.

Winning a Championship title with Wolves and gaining promotion back to the Premier League, Nuno went on to guide them to two consecutive seventh-placed finishes in the top flight and a run to the Europa League quarter-final stages (BBC).

Wolves also narrowly just missed out on an FA Cup final in 2019 after losing their Wembley semi to Watford, with his four years in the Midlands described as an ‘unquestioned success’ (BBC).

Spurs could certainly do far worse in their hunt for a new manager, but we believe fellow candidate Potter is a better shout due to his more open, attacking style.

West Ham: ExWHUemploye drops Rice claim

A very reliable source has confirmed the worrying news surrounding Declan Rice’s future at West Ham but there remains cause for optimism…

What’s the word?

The Telegraph’s Matt Law dropped a bombshell on Thursday morning, claiming that the 22-year-old midfielder had rejected two contract offers from the Irons’ hierarchy, which has subsequently put the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United on high alert.

Rice is now expected to wait and see if West Ham’s top-flight rivals follow up that reported interest with a bid.

This news has since been confirmed by one of the most trustworthy insiders around London Stadium in ExWHUemployee. In a series of tweets following the news, he said:

“The information about Rice is true. This is because the contract offers have been below what [Andriy] Yarmolenko is currently on, what [Javier] Hernandez was on and other well-paid players. For the player to stay at the club and turn down big moves, the pay needs to reflect his ability.

“If you compare [to] his international teammates, they obviously have a much higher wage and opportunities for success. These are how negotiations go and could change (which is why I didn’t report [this] and the inevitable reaction) however the offer does need to improve significantly,” he added.

“The club however have apparently no intention to sell. They do expect a huge offer before they will consider [it] and so far there has been no offer. So if that remains the case, he will be a West Ham player next year.”

Have no fear

When this news first broke, you could forgive many in east London for their worries, as it certainly seemed like it was a ploy to bolster his chances of leaving the club this summer.

In reality, it seems as if Rice wants to be paid to match his ability, and considering that he’s excelling at Euro 2020 as England have made it to the quarter-finals, he deserves that.

You must also remember that the Hammers are in a very strong position over the £58.5m-rated midfielder as he’s currently under contract until 2024, although they will need to make a massive improvement to those £60,000-per-week wages to have a tighter grip on David Moyes’ star man and future skipper.

As Ex goes onto suggest, West Ham have absolutely zero intention to sell, which should come as no surprise considering just how crucial he is to this team as well as Moyes’ past remarks on his future.

Back in January, the Scotsman fired out a warning to all his interested suitors, claiming that: “Bank of England money would be required, and you might even need to add Bank of Scotland on to that as well because he has been so good,” via Goal.com.

Indeed, a £100m price tag has been mooted elsewhere.

Rice has now picked up 21 caps for the Three Lions and rated as Moyes’ fourth-best player last season on their way to their best finish since 1999. They simply have to improve his contract – he deserves it.

No other West Ham player averaged more interceptions per game (1.8) or a better seasonal passing accuracy rate (88%) than the 6 foot 1 beast in 2020/21.

Ex also suggests that there is yet to be a firm bid from anyone, and at this rate, we can expect him to be a Hammers player next term, when they will be competing in the Europa League.

Whilst there was initially doubt over the news, this latest claim from Ex should leave fans a little more relieved, maybe even buzzing, that Rice appears set to stay.

AND in other news, Moyes must seal West Ham swoop for “fearless” £18m-rated “beast” after exciting update…

Anderson now ‘pressing’ to leave West Ham

According to a report by La Lazio Siamo Noi, West Ham United midfielder Felipe Anderson is now ‘pushing’ for a return to Lazio this summer and has made that clear to his agents.

The Lowdown: West Ham exodus?

West Ham may have to offload some deadwood if they wish to be active in the transfer market this summer, with the futures of Andriy Yarmolenko and Felipe Anderson particularly up in the air.

The Ukrainian is still West Ham’s highest earner on a reported £115,000-per-week (spotrac) while Anderson endured a torrid spell at FC Porto over 2020/2021 – starting just one Liga NOS game all season (WhoScored).

The Latest: Anderson now ‘pushing’ for Lazio return…

As per this report, the Brazilian is now ‘pushing’ for a West Ham exit and return to Lazio this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-2/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 28-year-old has made that clear to his agents whilst also giving them the task of mediating a price compromise between both the Irons and Lazio.

If a deal is going to be agreed between both parties, there is still work to be done, with the Italian capital side apparently unwilling to go over €5 million (£4.2m) plus bonuses for his signature.

The Verdict: Offload…

We believe it is in everyone’s best interest for the winger to find a new club this summer and West Ham could certainly use the money to bolster their own transfer kitty.

However, for just £4.2m plus bonuses, the Irons are right to hold off an any agreement until Lazio potentially come back with a better offer.

If club president Claudio Lotito is truly unwilling to go over that amount then Anderson’s representatives may have a hard time mediating an agreement.

Tillakaratne stars before Gibbs and Kallis fight back

Veteran left-hander Hashan Tillakaratne became the first Sri Lankan to score a century on a South African soil, batting himself into contention for a late call-up into Sri Lanka’s one-day squad on the second day of the second Test at SuperSport Park

Charlie Austin16-Nov-2002Veteran left-hander Hashan Tillakaratne became the first Sri Lankan to score a century on a South African soil, batting himself into contention for a late call-up into Sri Lanka’s one-day squad on the second day of the second Test at SuperSport Park on Saturday.Tillakaratne was discarded from Sri Lanka’s original 16-man squad for the five-match one-day series that follows this Test on Thursday, but his determined unbeaten 104 has prompted a re-think with the selectors now keen for him to stay on in South Africa. The obdurate 35-year-old, who has now scored four centuries since being recalled to the Test side in August 2001, ensured Sri Lanka reached a competitive 323 in their first innings, a significant improvement on their performance at Wanderers when they were bowled out for 192 and 130.However, Sri Lanka then laboured hard in the field as opener Herschelle Gibbs, who missed the opening Test after suffering from back spasms on the morning of the match, and Jacques Kallis scored unbeaten half centuries during an unbroken third-wicket partnership that has so far yielded 112 runs. After an afternoon of attritional cricket in which both sides grappled for the upper hand, South Africa finished the day on 183 for two, still 143 runs in arrears but with an opportunity to build a first-innings lead on Sunday.Gibbs was nearly caught on 32 when he top-edged a pull and looked fortunate tosurvive a bat-pad appeal off spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan, but otherwiseoozed authority, finishing the day not out 76.Kallis, the Man of the Match at Wanderers, was once again in good form, although his less than dynamic style failed to prevent the spectators filingoff to watch the South Africa-Scotland rugby international during a soporific evening session. He finished the day on 69, the fifth time he has passed 50 in consecutive innings.Sri Lanka failed to make inroads with the new ball but Dilhara Fernando, who rediscovered his bowling rhythm after an ill-disciplined performance in the first Test, grabbed two quick wickets in the afternoon.Left-handed opener Graeme Smith was trapped lbw for 15 with Fernando’s first delivery of the innings, and number three batsman Gary Kirsten was well caught for 11 off the shoulder of his bat by a Hasantha Fernando diving forward at gully. However, the Sri Lankan bowling attack rarely threatened afterwards, Muralitharan included, and stand-in captain Marvan Atapattu was forced into employing defensive tactics for much of the evening.Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka’s tail had crumpled after a lively marathon spell from Makhaya Ntini, who took three wickets in five balls and came within a whisker of a hat-trick.Chaminda Vaas (7) survived for 35 minutes before edging a lifting delivery,Chamila Gamage (2) prodded nervously into the hands of short leg and DilharaFernando (0) gloved his first ball.On 91 when lastman Muralitharan walked out to the crease, it looked as thoughTillakaratne would miss the chance to reach three figures for the tenth timein his career, but Muralitharan played with exaggerated caution and Tillakaratne eventually celebrated his hundred after a dab to third man.Muralitharan, relieved of the responsibility, then launched an entertainingoffensive, frustrating the South Africans as he clubbed five fours and a sixin a 27-run cameo that carried Sri Lanka past 300.Kallis finally ended the valuable 42-run partnership, a record for Sri Lankaagainst South Africa, when he clean bowled Muralitharan.Nitini finished with four for 86, but the economical Shaun Pollock was thepick of the South African bowling with two from 51 from 29 probing overs.
